We used to Love LOVE this place. It has always been a favorite. We would come for the Ajo alone. Tonight, sadly will probably be our last visit. Understanding inflation and all that, I'm not spending $100 bucks for my food to be served in paper boats that was once served on actual plates. The Ajo tasted goofy, the Baked Pasta tasted like bottled sauce and cheese in it, our beef skewers were super chewy and we got charged to refill the bread. Usually this place is poppin' on a saturday night, tonight dead. We thought it was closed at first. It's too bad since we have always talked this place up to friends and family. Being a Spaniard it was nice to have a few flavors of home here, but now, we will just make it at home or find another spot. read more

Winters is always surprising my wife and I. We thought it being such a small town it wouldn't have to much to offer. Well don't make the mistake of thinking that about Ficelle's. From the outside Ficelle's is a small restaurant with minimal seating on the inside. Thankfully the deck has plenty of additional seating. There is plenty of large trees to provide shade on those warm California days. When you enter the restaurant you first approach the bar to order. They have a large variety of Spanish style tapas to choose from. There will definitely be something for everyone in your party. The plates are small but carry a large punch of flavor. But you will need to get 4-5 items to make a full meal if there is more than 2 people. But then sharing is fun and drives conversation. An absolute must have is their sangria. It is one of the best I've had, and you can buy it by the pitcher... which is worth doing. Overall, if your looking for an awesome date night or a casual night out with friends, the go to Ficelle. Love everything about this place from the service to the atmosphere and selection of tapas! I really had no idea of the variety of tapas (which is just a smaller portion of dishes) that could be made! My favorite was the empanadas grande filled with beans, meat topped with sour cream and cheese served with side of fresh salsa! Other satisfying dishes were the grilled shrimp: Gambas al Ajillo and the Plato Combinado. Definitely start with this combination plate. It's a traditional mix of greens, and garbanzo bean salad with salami and cheese. It helps the indecisive for sure. The style of serving is order up front, open a tab, and they serve you each tapa meal. It can get crowded inside and after 7pm it's harder to find seating! Tip: someone sit and another grab a menu. This is my second time eating at Ficelle's, and I'm just so in love. Ficelle's food is just incredible. Everything is so delicious. If you haven't been to a tapas place before the idea is you order small dishes Spanish dishes and you share them with your friends. The dishes range from $6 to about $13. And I haven't had a bad dish yet. I've the empanadas, shrimps, beet with goat cheese crostini, crab and shrimp pasta, the lamb. I'm telling you it's all wonderful. The sauce that comes with the crab and shrimp pasta is really rich and buttery. They also serve bread with the strongest garlic aioli I've ever had. Be warned. But it also smart to keep it around for other dishes. The antipasta is really great, and is the best thing to start with if everyone is really hungry. I'm always amazed with how delicious the chickpea and bean salad is. Oh and the sangria!!! Mmmmmmmmm. Sangria's here are the best I've had. It's about $5 or $35 for a pitcher that pours 8-9 drinks. I was greeted by a very help man who asked, "have you been here before," and of course, my answer was a nope! So, don't be afraid of telling the servers that this is your first time here ! For a town as small as Winters, there are some pretty decent dining options in town. Not that there are too many, but all of them are very unique and Ficelle is definitely one of those. Very laid back, tucked away in a rustic space, reminiscent of a wood cabin, this Tapas fusion restaurant has some glowing reviews that are well deserved. Couple of pointers if you're coming to Ficelle for the first time: a. The tables are self-seating and sharing is encouraged. b. Order inside at the bar, grab the table number, and they will bring the plates as they come out. If you want to order more, just bring the same number back. c. Tab can be left open upon first order if you plan to repeat the offense. d. Drinks are picked up at the bar, next to the register. The tapas at Ficelle are not traditional Spanish but delicious nevertheless. The only drawback is that the prices are a bit on the high side for such small portions. Also, no beer on tap but they do have a decent selection of bottles. If I can make a suggestion, it would be nice to see some Berryessa brews represented since the brewery is already in the same zipcode. If you find yourself in Winters and are looking for a different and relaxed place to grab a bite (or few), along with delicious house sangria (a must!), make sure to give Ficelle a try. I wasn't sure what to expect when my best friend told me we were going to Winters to have tapas for her amazing Step Mothers birthday party... the initial thought that left this San Francisco transplant head was "They have tapas in WINTERS? This can't be good". We arrived in a cute little town just as the sun was starting to set, the air outside was pleasantly warm. We made our way onto the outside seating area and found our group. We stepped inside to place our orders and I was already impressed with there menu just by looking at it. We had: Plato Combinado: Refreshing, light and fun to munch on while drinking Sangria and Wine in the warm air, chatting and laughing with family. Fruta y Queso: Fresh, yummy and good cheese pairings. Teriyaki Beef Skewers x2, Smokey and Sweet, the beef was surprisingly tender! Gambas al Ajillo: man oh man this was a BEAUTIFUL dish. Spicy Shrimp perfectly cooked in a fresh olive oil with red peppers the colour was intoxicating. Canelone del Mar: YUM. This was probably my favorite dish of all taste wise. Esthetically it is a little bland but the taste was heaven. The grab and shrimp were tender and were not overwhelmed by the creamy lemony sauce. Sangria: It was actaully pretty good. The fruit appeared to have been sitting for awhile in the wine which is a GOOD THING. Very refreshing on the warm night. Ficelle in downtown Winters, CA is the place to go!!! Ficelle is a restaurant that serves small-plates of Italian and Mexican - inspired dishes. I came here with a group of friends, and we all decided quickly that we did not want to share plates. Good call. I ordered the wild mushroom ravioli and the beef burger sliders. For small plates I was thoroughly stuffed by the end of the meal. The sliders contained some of the juiciest and most well-flavored ground beef I think I've ever had. The ravioli was served with half thick red meat sauce and half thick white. As good as the food was, the topper for the evening had to be the house-made sangria. Being from the Bay Area we are used to great restaurants. Upon arrival I found a very busy line of people ordering food. We arrived at the evening rush. Ficelle was my first dining experience in Winters. Driving up there from Sac, it felt like it was SO far away and in the middle of nowhere. But once we drove over the bridge, I saw this little mini mecca of culinary options right before my eyes. Tapas are a great option to sample all kinds of goodies for (usually) not so much money. Each dish ranged from $5-12. We tried: Teriyaki beef skewers-meaty with a nice charred flavor. This was our second favorite Chile Relleno with cheese and rice mixture-this was my favorite plate. The rice filling was nice and moist, and the sauce was delicious Garlic cheese bread-pretty standard. Nothing new or special Fish tacos-fish with cabbage and white sauce. It was okay. We also ordered desserts: flan, lemon cupcake, and chocolate cupcake. All were good but not great, and the flan was the clear winner of the sweets we sampled. We ordered a couple pitchers of red sangria for the table, which serves about 8-9 glasses. Great service. This place is only open a few hours each night, a few days a week, and it gets packed. Everything looks and tastes great. However, as a college student, it does get pricey if you're here to really eat. I'd recommend coming not ravenous, especially for the guys. There is outdoors seating with a guy playing the spanish guitar on the patio. It's a great relaxing and fun atmosphere. Sangria was very fresh and tasty. I can only add to the praise Ficelle seems to be garnering, this place was excellent on all fronts especially considering that it's in... well... Winters.... And listen, I'm not trying to knock Winters, it's just that I've lived in the area my whole life and Winters has always been a place where I stop to get gas on my way to somewhere else. I never knew there was anything going on here let alone this great little downtown area with a restaurant like Ficelle. Ficelle is a tapas place so don't order one plate expecting it to be your entree, everything is smallish portions. I'd suggest two plates per person to start with and if you're still hungry you can order more as you go. The first thing we got was a chicken tostada plate, which was (surprisingly to us all) cold and had a decidedly funky flavor that no one cared for. But after that dubious start everything came up roses. The Chile Rellena (so named I expect because it was sort of a reverse relleno) was excellent, with a delicious mole sauce and some nice cherry tomatoes that perfectly offset the spicy pepper. The sliders were absolutely delicious, the meatballs were wonderful, and the cheese toast was... well it was just cheese toast but come on who doesn't like cheese toast? We also had a skewer plate which was perfectly cooked and delicious, as well as sampling a kind of open-face pork sandwich which was good though I doubt I'd get it again. The pitcher of sangria was wonderful and on a warm evening would be a perfect accompaniment to the food. Service was prompt, the atmosphere was lovely and inviting and the bathroom was clean and well appointed. Prices were quite fair, not cheap per se but certainly not shocking. The only thing preventing me from offering up a fifth star is that while everything was excellent nothing was truly exceptional. Details are often the difference between excellent and exceptional, and this is true of Ficelle; The meatballs were excellent and the garlic bread that came with them was delicious, but it didn't have that extra little something that makes you say "Wow, this is amazing garlic bread..." The sliders were similar: They were excellent, but being served on store-bought buns instead of awesome fresh baked in-house buns can be the difference between excellent and exceptional. To be fair, it can also be the difference between reasonably priced and too expensive, especially if that attempt to be exceptional doesn't quite work. But as always with a 4 star review, don't let the details that stop a 5th star prevent you from eating at what is without question a great spot. The food is better than good and they obviously care about presentation and quality of service. We will *definitely* be back! read more

Well friends, I have good news and bad news; the good news is that there is a super-friendly, casual, yet lovely little establishment that will give you tastes of like, 20 different things at once! I know, crazy, right? There's this thing called "tapas", which means "small plates" or something, and "Ficelle", located in charming Winters, CA, serves it all up with flair, inventiveness, and no-nonsense simplicity. Our little group managed to sample 7 or 8 different delightful things, including lamb and beef skewers, wild mushroom ravioli, crab stuffed pasta, chicken avocado tostada, sizzling shrimp with red pepper, and couple of others that escape me. It was all very unpretentious, relatively inexpensive, and amazingly fresh and tasty. We sat in the lovely outdoor wood deck area and kept cool with many many glasses of house-made ice cold sangria (delish!) In summary, this is another absolute gem of a spot in the quickly growing-on-me town of Winters, just a stones throw from Lake Berryessa. Recommended! So, what's the bad news? The bad news is that there is no bad news, so you'll find yourself making (incredibly) lame excuses to drive all the way up there like catching Michael Bolton in concert at the Cache Creek casino when all you really want is more tapas and sangria. And trust me, Mr. Bolton can tell that you've got Latin inspired food delights on your mind and not the embarrassing braying and over-the-hill hip swinging of a 65 year old man. read more

The polenta with asparagus was really good, as well as the shrimp and the crab and shrimp stuffed pasta. I wasn't the biggest fan of the bean and cheese empanada we tried, but that may be because I am more used to Argentine empanadas and they were different than what I am used to.
