This place has good reviews and I was in the area and needed something quick so I stopped in. Cash only which is okay but I had to go across street to the ATM. Guy at the front wasn't the smartest. I got the gyro meal and when I got it I opened it up to see if they added the zaziki. I then realized that they gave me 5 small thin slices of meat. I also should point out I got no pita. I asked if this is the amount they give and he said yes. I walked out. They didn't even include onions or tomatoes or sauce. After leaving the city I then realized I was not given my change of 10 dollars. I have been stopping at this place for the best hot dog special around town. You get 2 hot dogs with some of everything on it. I love the slice pickle and hot sport pepper's. This review is only for the Italian ice and the service. I've discovered this place last Wednesday and have been there 6 times already! That's 6 times in 11 days!! The flavors are great, they use real fruit, the portions are good and when you ask for mixes, they usually give a perfect cup. Today was a new woman making it for me, not the usual Latina woman and she put way more strawberry than pineapple but that won't deter me from going back time and time again!! Well if this place is a 5 star establishment, why did I give it 4 stars then?? Well, I generally take off 1 star automatically if a place doesn't accept credit cards. With all due respect to Skippy (mountains of it), don't believe the Taylor Street hype - the best Italian ice in the city is at Ferro's. I've been coming here since it was J.J.'s and have tasted lemon, watermelon, strawberry, cantaloupe, pineapple, pina colada, and blueberry. All made with fresh fruit, nice small ice crystals that keep the ice smooth (not crunchy like a sno-cone), and chunks of fruit (the watermelon has seeds, the pina colada has chunks of pineapple and shreds of coconut, etc.). The flavors are true and intense, without lemons interfering. From Taylor Street to Elmwood Park, I haven't tasted better than Ferro's. The place actually has food as well, but for the past few years I've gone strictly for the ice. read more

Not really hidden, but truely a gem. I went to this place once over 10 years ago, but I didn't remember much about it. Something attracted me to this place last week for some reason. I had a Italian Beef sandwich and a Lemon Italian Ice. The Italian beef was great, plenty of beef cut in thin slices, bread dipped in gravy. It was wonderful, and huge. The Italian ice was very good as well. Some of the best I ever had. $3.50 for a big ass medium cup, well worth it in my opinion. I stopped by here today again for lunch and another ice. I had a breaded steak sandwich and a mango italian ice. The breaded steak was freakin hugeee, not as huge as freddy's but bigger then Ricobenes. The whole steak sandwich was tender as hell, I mean, every bite was tenderlicious, no hard chewy parts. The mango ice was too die for, great flavor and awesome texture, not ice hard and not slushy as hell, even as it melts it is heavenly delicious. When it starts to melt a little, it kinda gives it a ice cream texture. I am so happy I live just blocks away from here. They have a dining area as well as a outdoor patio to grub in. read more

Nothing flashy about this place, and sometimes the hours are unpredictable, however they're a solid neighborhood joint and everything they serve up is as it should be, and you can't go wrong with a beef or meatball sandwich from here. What I find that seals the deal is that you can get some really very tasty Italian Ice in December. Velvety, sweet and tart, just perfect. Most places have it only seasonally, which is a bummer. I have yet to go to Ferro's and try something I do not enjoy. If you're in the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and stop in. They have a smoker where they make fresh bbq everyday. Their brisket and rib tips are my favorites. It will leave you licking your fingers. Their Italian ice is the best I've ever had, ever! You taste the fresh fruit that they use. I get off the train at sox/35th and walk the four blocks to Ferro's and the four blocks back to the train station. I have never minded that mile. The Italian Ice is one of my favorite things in the world (and I'm an extremely picky person.) I've had Mario's Italian ice....what the heck is that???? It's like a fake, artificial slushie. Slurpees are better than that. ICEEs are better.They should be ashamed of themselves. After having Ferro's Italian Ice, my standards are high. I expect a tantalizing experience of real chunks of fruit, frosty ice, not ice chunks, and a perfect blend of sweet and sour. By themselves, each flavor, except lemon, is pretty sweet and will give you a headache after awhile. But you'll like the headache, because the tummy will be full of italian goodness. I know one person who says Mario's is better than Ferro's, but everyone else who has had Mario's only thinks it's the best because they haven't had Ferro's. Yeah, I'm an elitist Ferro's fan. My favorite combos are half lemon/ half strawberry and half lemon/half watermelon. On my really indecisive days I get a little of each flavor they have. (Sometimes I come in every week of the summer, so maybe they're especially nice to me, but they're really nice people anyways.) They don't always have a lot of flavors but lemon, strawberry, and watermelon are pretty much always there. When they first start selling itlaian ice towards the end of spring time, the italian ice is in frozen cups, but it's way better fresh. If you've found better Italian ice anywhere, let me know. I went in early April and they told me they weren't goign to start selling until May 1. I went in May 1, and they sadly told me the machine needed to be repaired (I saw the truck taking the machine away) and they told me to come back in two weeks. Tomorrow will be two weeks. I'll be there tomorrow. The withdrawal has hit me pretty hard. The parkign lot can be a pain sometimes. It's not the biggest and sometimes it's ahrd to get out of. But I walk anyways.... The food isn't so bad, but with the amount of options available in the area you would be crazy to waste your $$$ a Ferro's. My wife and I ordered a Italian Sub, Philly Cheese Steak, Chili-Cheddar fries and a large lemonade. The Italian Sub was gross. Bread was tough, the slices of meat were 1/8 of an inch thick, and it was swimming in vinegar and oil. The Philly Cheese Steak was okay, but it was more like a beef sandwich with cheese that and actual Philly. Chili-Cheddar fries were okay, but to use Hormel chili on when you are supposed to be a authentic operation is just sad. The Lemonade tasted like soap, which was odd because the place looked like it hadn't seen any soap for quite awhile. My wife and I l are big fans of Italian Lemonade, but after seeing a black curly hair in the freezer case where the Italian Ice was stored that was out of the question. All in all, it was very disappointing - especially after reading some of the rave reviews. There are several places near Ferro's that are cheaper and much, much better. The old lady who works the Italian ice stand is very rude and has the hospitality skills of an olive seed. It was my first time visiting the restaurant and ice stand and I asked her if you could order and ice from inside the restaurant. She addressed me in a scolding tone and nastily made me aware that they are separate. Getting upset at a customer for asking a question that should not be offensive since they share a kitchen space in unacceptable. Hence I will never go back to either business. I've only had their italian ice so that's as far as my review covers but ever since I was a little girl, this was the place to go on hot summer days. They have over 5 flavors with a mix of fruity and sweet. Some of their fruity flavors even have small chunks of fruit in them (i.e. cantaloupe). You can even ask for them to mix 2 flavors together. They only sell their italian ice at an outside window though but there's a nice umbrella'd patio to eat it at. There's a good deal of parking spots but it gets tight during their lunch hour rush - about 12-1:30. read more

Everything they've got, you can get better nearby. Their breaded steak is dry, flavorless, and doesn't fit in the bread right--go to Ricobene's. Their Italian Beef is passable at best, but clearly suffers from lack of care and affection--go to Freddie's. Their burgers are lackluster--go to Kevin's Hamburger Heaven, or even Maxwell Street Depot if you have to. The rest of the menu isn't really worth trucking with. The service is poor, but it's a fast food joint, so that isn't too relevant. They don't accept credit cards. The Italian Ice is everything the other reviewers say it is--that is, it's wonderful, some of the best in the city--but it's only available for about three months out of the year. So come here for the ice in the summer, but avoid it the rest of the year. I really don't see why, by the way, that they can't serve us the frikkin ice whenever we please. My boyfriend and I are visiting from out of town and wanted to try a local spot for breakfast. This is the best food we've had our whole trip! Four stars for their Italian lemonade. Ferro's has the best Italian lemonade on the South Side of Chicago. What makes Ferro's Italian lemonade so special? They use fresh fruit and natural flavoring. I am a big fan of the following flavors: cantaloupe, mixed berries, and strawberry. I like to mix the lemonade flavors. My current go to is half lemon and half mixed berries. I've been at this place a few times. The first time I went I had a Italian ice with a Buffalo chicken sandwich. The Italian ice was great, but the sandwhich had more fat than meat. The second time I went, I tried the Italian beef sandwhich. That was ok as well, but it didn't have any flavor to the meat in my opinion. YUM!!! Seriously can't stop raving about this place. I have been here quite a few times and the people are very friendly. I haven't tried their food yet as I only come here for the Italian ice, but I've tried just about every flavor and my faves are watermelon and strawberry, even though they're all delicious. Their prices aren't bad either and since I recently moved it the area it's tempting to stop by everyday. The only reason I dont come here everyday and the reason for my 4 of 5 stars is that this place accepts cash only and although their hours are posted on yelp I came here a couple times and they were closed...even though the yelp hours said they were open. They didn't have any hours posted on the window either. This can be a bit confusing for customers. Aside from those two nuances I highly recommend this place. Just the right place, I came in around 11:00 am and I was quickly seated. I was given an overview of the menu and after settling in I made my order. I had a Sausage pepper egg sandwich, with some. It was out quickly and it was a win the whole way around. Not only was the best, it was cooked perfectly. It was dripping with juice (I love it).
