FIRST IMPRESSIONS: really quaint storefront, and first impression.Enter through the cafe door which also functions as a retail shop for handmade objects like soaps, etc. The gifts have an upscale vibe-worth a trip back. We had about 15 minutes to kill before attending a Yelp event across The Street so we opted to take the chill off by purchasing a hot beverage at Norma's. The staff is pretty laid-back, friendly, but laid-back. If you're in a hurry, I'm not sure if this would work. The hot and cold beverages are very straightforward and you can get some vegan options here. There were two behind the counter, but I felt they were a little engaged in their personal banter and we're not that attentive. Not a real sense of urgency or purpose. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but once they did give us their full attention, we let them know that we were waiting for an event across the street and didn't have a lot of time. They asked us if we'd like to sit down with our beverage and we opted to do so since it was pretty cold outside. We ordered two hot chocolate And two homemade biscuits. They gave us a table number stanchion for the table and let us know they would be bringing it to us. We did not need to wait. We took the three steps down to the main dining area, where we were pleasantly surprised that they were having a live event - in this case it was a storytelling event. There was a table available for the two of us so we sat down and quickly realized that the table was so off-balance that it post a potential safety hazard. When I placed my hot chocolate down and rested my wrist, the entire table tilted forward toward me. This is an easy thing to fix, but my guess is that it's been this way for a really long time. That's unfortunate. All that aside, the room was really cozy and had a lot of character - lots of two top and four top tables to provide a very intimate setting with each one having a good view of the small stage Minutes went by and there was no biscuit delivered. More minutes went by and we began to wonder if they had forgotten. I guess is that they weren't making the biscuits from scratch so most likely they did forget. Since we had already paid for everything with a pretty generous tip, we waited a a few more minutes. Time ran out when we noticed that the event attendees were lining up across the street. That's something we could see from the really great big windows that faced Main Street. Reluctantly, my sister and I got up from the table and headed to the counter where we had made the order. We let them know that we needed to go and asked if the biscuits were ready. They seemed perplexed at first and then a lightbulb moment. Yes. I suspect they did forget the order. I wouldn't bother so much but two biscuits and two hot chocolates. It was about $20 plus tip so when they recognized that the biscuits were still missing, they asked if we would like to take them to go. The lack of awareness was disappointing because they were clearly not busy with anything else A minute or two later, they emerged from the kitchen with a small bag, presumably containing the two biscuits. Service was definitely lacking, particularly for what is a bit of a higher priced venue. Maybe we caught them on an off night but my sense is that laid back attitude is built in to the business model. Would I return to Norma's? I'm not sure. The hot chocolate was good, not from a mix, but would it bring me back? I'll let you know.

Furthermore, even if everything comes out the way you ask for it, it will still suck. They must reuse the coffee beans cause their is no punch in their coffee. The bagels are usually a day old and are stale. They don't toast them long enough. They are very stingy with spreads. They make iced drinks when you want them hot. They don't know the difference between Splenda and sweet n low. I drive an extra half hour each weekend morning to go to different Dunkin Donuts locations so I don't have to deal with the nonsense here. Seeing as this is the first yelp review, maybe they will start being held accountable and greeting customers with a smile and having pride and dignity in what they do and can concentrate long enough while on the clock to satisfy their paying customers. I've probably thrown close to a thousand dollars in their tip jar and am very nice despite their lack of compassion and work ethic yet still get treated like I'm a nuisance when I pull up to the drive-thru. I've told myself countless times I won't go back here but due to the convenience of their location I've drove myself insane. Unless I'm in serious dire circumstances, I will never go back here.

I've noticed over the years, that all these things have changed overall: the bagels are not nearly as fresh, the prices have basically doubled, and the staff doesn't look so happy to be there anymore. My go to is the plain bagel (not toasted) with lox and cream cheese. A great bagel should never need to be toasted. Toasting a bagel makes a great bagel worse, but a bad bagel better. It is the ultimate leveler, but we this is in NY so we should be expecting some great bagels. Nowadays, my bagels are hit or miss, but the last few times I've went, the bagels are still pretty good with nice serving sizes. Just not as good as it once was (and could still be in the future).

Wednesday was different. The young woman who assisted me was genuinely sweet, and we had a pleasant conversation.
