Being a female, I always feel like a target for being ripped off at a mechanic shop...but what I came away with was Pete giving me an immediate and down the road items to repair or keep an eye on (the down the road things in order of importance too)...exactly what I was looking for! I knew my car had a couple of minor things and I was for sure one of the things that needed to be fixed was the brakes, but Pete informed me how the pads work and timing, etc...anyways, he said the brakes were good -- now how many people do you think would have been that honest to not say - sure your breaks need to be replaced... Pete was honest and super helpful about explaining what things were and how they work within my vehicle. I highly recommend this place! My office is literally across the street from Felix's Auto Service (RingCube - high tech startup) and my coworkers often joke about the variety and conditions of cars that come through their garage for repair. What I realize now is that the reason they have so many cars is that they have so many loyal customers and word of mouth business. When I needed a place to get my car (Nissan Xterra) fixed, I figured I'd give them a try since its so convenient. First off, really knowledgable and friendly people. Secondly, really fast service. Third, paid much less than I expected as I had problems with my suspension, brakes, and a flat tire - they only charged me $12 to fix my tire which most mechanics would have added a huge premium for the labor alone and they waived the cost of diagnostics. This is an honest, high quality auto repair and maintenance shop. My Ford Expedition is out of the dealer service contract now. I brought it to Felix's because I want a small shop where they know my car. I got a thorough evaluation from Pete of all that my SUV needed and what was optional. We decided to go ahead with the optional new front suspension, and the car drives almost like new again at 65,000 miles with that and some other needed work! Pete at Felix Auto is AWESOME! My transmission went out on my Honda and through Yelp reviews I found Felix's. Everyone said his prices were the lowest and most reasonable and his customer service was outstanding, so I gave them a shot. Not only did he quote me a price of HALF of what I got quoted in SF, Pete called me each day to give me an update and what we were looking at. I was very impressed with their overall work and they had the entire transmission fixed and done in 4 days! I was amazed. Pete is a very nice guy and knows his stuff when it comes to car repair. Terrible,Terrible,Terrible! I had a bad experience with Felix Auto Service. I was referred by someone who has used Felix Auto Service for 20 years. The owner, Pete greets you with a smile when you enter through his front door. I have a 1989 Toyota Corolla that had a stalling problem after it warms up after 10 minutes. Pete told me it would be $75 for a diagnostic. I brought it in to have him take a look at the problem. He called me up and told me I needed a carburetor rebuild for $950. This I found odd the car was running smooth for 10 minute and it stalled abruptly after the cooling fan kicked in. I refused the carburetor rebuild since it was half the value of the car and I didn't think it was a problem since there was sufficient fuel supply going to my carburetor and I had recently a new fuel filter installed. I went to pick it up and he was charging the battery. I asked myself a question why would a car run smoothly and stall abruptly after 10 minutes. Going further in the problem I checked the current going into my cooling fan but that was not the problem. I checked battery voltage while the car was running it was 11.4 volts which was way low which should be around 14 volts or so. I narrowed the problem down to my Alternator and replaced it after seeing the rotor all completely worn out. For less than $100 I replaced it with a rebuilt alternator. I drove it for 200 miles and the car ran fine even at 65 mph. I went back to see Pete and he still saying my carburetor was the problem. He refused to listen to me what I replaced. A good mechanic would listen up to what the customer would have to say. I got a shady feeling from Pete. Would I bring my car to Felix Auto ever again ?...Absolutely not. read more

Felix's business already is reputable so no need to repeat what everyone else is saying. Solid for modern car standard automotive repair, they'll get you in and out usually in a couple hours for standard repairs as long as you schedule ahead of time. My alternator died in my '91 Ranger and I needed a quick repair, like anyone would. I first called Depot Auto down the road from Felix's. Luckily they were still open at 6pm, but they said that since they were busy, they would not even get to look at it for at least three days (on a Thursday). Worst case, I wouldn't have it back for a week since they close early on Fridays. I called Felix's first thing in the morning, and Pete said they should have it done easily by the end of the day! What a relief! Somehow my battery had enough juice to get the truck down to the garage, and then I hopped on the train just a couple blocks away in order to get to work. Pete even offered me a lift, but I didn't mind the short walk. After they did some checks to verify the alternator was indeed the problem, Pete called to notify me of the estimated price for the part and repair. I approved, and then after the repair, he called again to let me know it was finished. I paid over the phone since I could not pick up my truck before closing time. The total was $280 ($163 alternator, $117 labor), which seems to be about average based on what I have read online. In my situation, my time was money, so I was completely fine with that price. If I had more time on my hands, I would have gotten the tools/parts to do the job myself and probably have saved $150. Pros: very fast service, friendly, seemingly honest (multiple calls to keep me in the loop about what they were doing), convenient (near train), reasonable price Cons: maybe not the cheapest price around, but I could be wrong, and the pros listed above would far outweigh it anyway read more

I'm happy to read that many of you didn't feel disrespected, but that wasn't my experience. I brought my truck in for the steering pump. They did the service, it was fine and I was happy. I asked Pete to check out a noise in the rear and they found that a leaf spring was broken and needed repair. Having had a good experience the first time, I was interested in having Felix's do this repair. I was quoted $1200 for one leaf spring and shock and was a bit overwhelmed by the price. I decided to do my homework. I talked to friends (mostly 4x4 owners who've done most of their own repairs and who I trust implicitly) and they were shocked by the price (I was quoted by another shop $600 to replace 2 leaf springs @ $300 for 2 leaf springs vs. the $800 for one that Pete was quoting). They were more shocked that Pete had told me that I only needed to replace one of the leaf springs. I thing that is truly the inspiration for writing this is how Pete treated me. When I called back, he seemed insulted that I would do my homework, that I would consider something other than the option he suggested. I've taken my truck (now with 250,000 miles on it) to a lot of great shops and everyone was willing to work with me on time, budget, etc. Not Pete. The final straw was after telling me he would get back to me in 24 hrs with some options he never called...I am still waiting. Actually, I am not. I have since been asking for quotes from other shops and their information is inline with the information I received from my friends (the friends Pete gave the impression he thought they were idiots for telling me I needed to replace both leaf springs vs. one). And every shop I've called since has been totally awesome about answering my questions and doing the best to work with me. I'm sorry Felix's, I had a great review in mind when I left your shop the first time. I was totally stoked, but the next experience was a total let down. I feel insulted, taken advantage of and don't even want to bring my truck back to have you look at the steering pump you fixed that is acting up again. I don't need to be insulted again. read more

I had a very unfortunate experience with Felix's Auto Service. In short: Peter was just not a professional. He slow-played me on the quote, didn't fix the problem, never apologized for anything, and was not easy to work with after all of this had happened. I forked up the money and left -- will get the issue fixed elsewhere. More specifically, I found Peter's quoting of service to be deceiving and his quality of work to be very poor and unprofessional. He quoted the work I asked for (oxygen intake sensor replacement) at a solid $210 in the door - lower quote than anyone else. However, this was upped to $450 upon Peter's closer analysis of the situation. A fairer quote would have done research on the possible range and said it could be X or it could be Y, or that he would need to check it out before quoting. If you don't know, say so! Additionally, and unfortunately, the $450 of work did not even fix my issue -- Peter did not do due diligence before doing the work. It turns out, the oxygen intake sensors I thought I needed replacing were not the problem, and Peter did nary a test to even see if my hunch/memory was correct. Never apologized. This place knows how to get money. I brought my car here when it broke down on my commute down from the city. They told me it was the radiator and I would need to replace that. I was a little strapped for cash at the time, so I wanted to make sure this was necessary. "Yeah, absolutely. This will fix it right up!" They told me. A large sum of money later, the car still has problems. They told me it was something else but they couldn't have known that until they replaced the radiator. I got a bad vibe so I took it next door for a second opinion. It wasn't what they said the second or first time at all. Turns out it was a blown head gasket or lead gasket. Still an expensive fix but at least I wasn't wasting money on problems that weren't even real problems. After my visit to the neighboring shop, everything has been running smoothly. Do your research. Don't go to the first place that pops up on your search! read more

I needed an oil change, asked them how much would it cost. They said $30-$35. That is kinda high but I didnt think about it given this is 5-star rated. When they gave written estimate, it was $42.. hmm.. I didnt say anything cuz I was in rush. WHen I got the car back, they asked for $49. I asked them what changed.. they said the earlier price was without waste disposal. There are two kinds of businesses. One which makes money by delighting customers and relying on repeat customers. Then, there are those who make moeny by ripping off one-time customers. $49 for oil change is not exactly rip-off, but this place is closer to the second category than the first. I came here to get my rear brakes fixed. Pete claimed that I needed to replace my rear rotor. I asked about 3 Honda dealerships and they said that it wasn't necessary. I found a good quote at: Honda-Acura Service Independence Located on: 2415 Old Middlefield Way Mountain View, CA 94043 Vladamir from Honda-Acura Service Independence fixed my problem and confirmed that I didn't need to replace my rotors and that it wouldn't be a problem to resurface them down the road. Pete from Felix's claimed that i needed to get my rotor replaced because it's "unsurfaceable". I got a shady feeling from Pete. I asked for a discount and he asked me to pay in cash. When someone asks me to pay in cash, I always assume the worst. read more

Felix's Auto service deserves 5 stars! I went to this Auto service several times. I got my lingering engine cooling system problem fixed when I came to this Auto repair store for the first time. The JEEP dealer shop failed to figure out this problem every time, although we told them the engine light on the dashboard was on for a long time. Actually, I went here for changing the tail light bulb, but Felix's Auto Service figured out and fixed the problem as well as adding brake fluid to the car. And the price is very reasonable too. Felix's Auto is a Mountain View fixture. When you bring your car there, you get the feel like you're in a small town. Pete, the owner is so friendly, professional, thoroughly explains the mechanical problems and their prices are very fair. Kiff is the greatest mechanic. They've been childhood friends since elementary school and it is great to see them working together after all these years. Felix has taught Peter well! I brought my Audi A4 in. They figured out what was wrong with my steering, assured me they could do the job and gave me a fair price on the parts and labor. Don't let their full lot intimidate you. I was on the fence about whether to give this place a four or five star. Based on the price difference from there estimate to the actual price I paid, I gave a four. Peter was a nice guy who explained what was wrong with my car in simple terms I was able to understand. He even showed me the part on my car that was defective. So, I appreciated that. I'm always skeptical when it comes to mechanics, since there always seems to be something else wrong with your car. When he told me that something else had to be fixed, I asked him why and he was able to tell me. I thought about what he said, but called a few reliable friends who were more car savvy than I am. After the advice that my friends gave, I opted not to get the extra things that were recommended. Peter was not pushy. I got my car back, and it has been running fine. OK. So Pete has now gone the extra mile one more time. We brought our 18-yr old Mazda in after it failed the smog inspection. Pete, as always, was completely honest. He evaluated the problem and said there was only a 50/50 chance that he could get it to pass with minimal repairs of $75. It would take $1100 to fix the interrelated parts to guarantee it would pass. The car is hardly worth $1100! So, we had Pete complete the $75 repairs. Pete worked really really hard to help it pass (even tho it was only a $75 repair!), but in the end, the car barely failed. So we asked Pete which cars he though we should consider buying. He didn't just throw out some names. He gave us a comprehensive review of the best manufacturers, and within those lines, the best models based on rate of repair and other factors. Wow! That saved us days of research. We narrowed it down to 2 models. We called Pete again. Pete spent another 15 min on the phone talking about the pro's and con's of each, and the pro's and con's of each feature. In the end, what it came down to is...with extraordinary service like this, we made sure we bought a car that Pete works on. Because there's no one else we want to bring our cars to. I should be putting 4 stars maybe, because they are friendly, answer questions, and they will pick you up or drop you off. TL;DR: Pete is friendly and explains what's wrong. This business doesn't seem to mysteriously find "new" faults. very honest but 3 stars as a warning because (a) my test estimate was way off, and (b) I did find it pricey. I was expecting so much more after reading previous reviews. Seeing all these 5 star reviews lead me to think I may get good honest service for cheap. My "service engine soon" light was on and I also needed to get an oil change. Add to that that I needed to get smogged this month. I went there and I got and estimate for $30 oil change and $75 diagnostic. At the end of the day, my EGR valve is faulty and needs to be replaced. I got a call explaining to me what they found out. The details are : part $258 (exact same model / brand / origin $119-160 online), oil change $30, roughly $190 in "tests" (estimate is waaaaay off, the only excuse for that would be to 2x or 3x the tests which is mostly labor), taxes and you have a total bill of $506. One thing I really did not like was that on the phone I was told "your total would be $4XX", that's one more peeble to the pile. My total should be what's at the bottom of the invoice, not subtotal, tax was not included on the phone. Damn it, ~$190 in tests alone? really? Murphy's law: no tax refund this year, replace EGR valve, get smogged ...etc. I did ask that there has to be a markup on those numbers when looking at the invoice. Pete conceded yes, that's how they get money. I don't know if they play it by the book for the labor part (which is almost always a big over-estimate) and how much testing was done. Pete also told me to drive 50 miles before my vehicle would be able to get smogged (vehicle self-tests). But that wasn't right. My catalyst monitor self-tests needed around 170 miles. I am not car savvy, but I'd recommend other people to use up one full tank instead, just to be on the safe side. If I did bring my car to get smogged past 50 miles I would / may have had to cough up more money to re-test. Some smog check stations make money that way. read more

I had a great experience with Felix's Auto Service. The owner, Pete, was actually the one to drop me off at work and pick me back up when my car was ready. I was really impressed with that and it gave me time to ask him a million questions about my car, which Pete not only answered, but gave great explanations for. I usually have my guard up with auto places as I'm a petite blond and feel like most mechanics see a "sucker" sign on my forehead when I walk in. However, I they were very honest, down to earth and made having to deal with replacing my clutch a surprisingly easy and quick experience. I'm really glad that I found Felix's. My vehicle is 15+ years old, and I've had a few issues with it, but Felix's has always been able to get me fixed up. Pete does a nice job of explaining your options, and lets you know what must be done, and what's "nice to have". When I take my car here, I feel confident that that high quality work is being done, and that the mechanics are treating my vehicle like they would treat their own. My only minor complaint is that sometimes I wish they were a little faster with repairs, but I don't mind too much since: (1) they are busy because they are good, and (2) I'd rather have them take a bit of time and do the job right than rush through it and screw things up. This place was really close to our apartment, and we decided to take our 2003 Subaru in for check engine light service. They fixed the E-vap system, but the light came back on again. They took it back for the 2nd and 3rd time with minimal or no charge until the job was completely done. I ended up spending a good amount in the end, but I know that I couldn't have gotten a more thorough inside-out repair elsewhere. Peter struck me as a guy right away as an honest person. noticed my last review here got cut off. Felix's is the best independent repair shop I've been to. Not only do they do great work, they go to bat for you when needed. Pete replaced a transmission in my Acura and I wasn't completely happy with the results, there was a odd squeel that could be heard when switching gears, however all diagnositics came back fine, both Pete and I suspected something could be up. A month or so goes by and I still hear the sound. Pete went to bat for me, got me a new transmission, I didn't have to do any paper work or any leg work, he also didn't charge me a cent for any re-work, which I'd expect but still you never know these days. I recently bought a new car so I won't see Pete for a couple years, unless I'm in a bind with the dealership, but my daughter owns my old car and I told she needs to take it to Pete if she wants it to last long. I'm a big fan of Felix's after my last car repair experience trying to fix my brakes. During the first cold call to see what their service was like, Pete the owner came across as completely professional and service-oriented. When I took my car in, he instantly hopped in and took me for a test drive while answering all my questions, did a free(!) inspection of my car, and took the time to demonstrate some general concepts of how car parts worked. Felix the previous owner gave me a ride to and from work and is a thoroughly friendly guy as well. The rates were fair, and equally important, the experience felt comfortable. Pete is awesome! I took my car in for a second opinion after getting an expensive estimate from a dealer for service. He walked me through his analysis of the dealer estimate and pointed out a major brakes issue that the dealer had not caught. After the repair, he explained each item on the bill, even drawing diagrams of some of the problems.
