I live in Columbus,OH. CAM grocery carries their buns. I must say that they are not very good in that the red bean buns have little red bean paste in them. That is true of the taro buns & coconut buns as well. One could barely taste or see the name sake ingredient in each case. These used to be better. I wish they would maintain the quality and raise prices. Customers know that there is inflation. People do not mind paying more for a good product. We were attending essentially an open house party with an "open" unspecific menu, so instead of just bringing chips and guac', I decided steamed dim sum or Cantonese pastry items would fit the bill. This modest bakery in Chicago's Chinatown could provide both - and at modest prices! After a bit of getting lost while heading to pick up our order (30 each of pork sui mai and shrimp hah gau, plus 10 winter melon cakes, to be served quartered.) The driver left us double-parked on Wentworth across from Feida and very quickly returned with the complete order - the winter melon cakes were fresh (not warm) and flaky. So I never even entered the shop. The 2 groups of dim sum favorites were nicely hard frozen - great for the trip back to the north. Because of their fillings, the dumplings took differing times to steam up (my task) - the shrimp hah gau took about 7 minutes, while the pork dumplings took about 4 times as long to be safely steam-cooked! Restaurant review This was a prior bakery owned by my grandfather so I have many fond memories of this place and eating the food. It has a wide selection of chinese pastry and cakes. It's easy to see why some people might be put off by Feida bakery. The interior looks a bit old, cramped and dinghy. It doesn't exactly have a shiny crisp modern interior. The personnel is not warm and fuzzy though they are friendly. I believe most of them are Cantonese and in my own personal experience Cantonese people tend to be fast and direct in their personal interactions, which some people might interpret as rude. There can be a significant language barriere if you don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin. But look past all that and look at the plethora of freshly baked goods! They have so many choices of steamed and baked Chinese breads and pastries. The prices are not listed but I wouldn't worry about it too much, because it's all cheap! They have good barbecue pork buns - especially good if you can get the fresh ones. But just go crazy and try a bunch of different breads and pastries to go - it's all pretty cheap. When you order, the ladies behind the counter just add everything up in their heads and magically arrive at the total price. It's always less than I expected. This is a regular stop for us when visiting Chicago and sometimes we order some extra stuff to take back home too. There is an area in the back where you can sit down and enjoy some breakfast or lunch. There are usually some Chinese old timers hanging out there drinking tea and reading their newspapers. First off, it's definitely less catered to tourists and more hole in the wall and smaller selection (especially for the cakes). THEY OVERCHARGE!! BEWARE!!! Ask for receipt. Been to this place couple of times, I like their baked goods. But I always felt that I'm being overcharged. They don't give you a receipt. You pick what you want, they do the math in their heads and tell you what it cost. Like a dumb dumb I just hand them the money. I got 2 items recently.Ones 65 cents and the other 75cents. I was told it was $2. There's no way with tax it amounts to $2. I asked for a receipt, got a stink eye from the lady and sure enough it was less than that. I felt cheated. It's sad that they r so dishonest and lack integrity. I'm sure they do that to all the customers. What a scam!!! I love coming to this bakery if I'm on my way back from school and I need a quick and cheap bite to eat. Most of the buns are around a dollar, which is a steal because you can make a meal outta 2 bucks. Some of my favorites are the BBQ pork buns and pork floss buns with green onion and mayo on top. The bakery also sells moon cakes, mousse cakes and a limited selection of dim sum items. One of my favorites are the taro puffs, which are only $0.75 and they're huge! Moral of the story: if you're broke and there isn't a McDonald's value menu available...head to Feida Bakery. read more

I was visiting China Town with my friends . This place is a classic Chinese bakery. They sell good baked stuff for very low price. You can get delicious cake slices, buns , tarts etc for less than $1 each. They are pretty quick in service. Don't expect spacious seating area or fancy decor. They do have a limited seating area. We saw some Chinese elderly people ,who looked like patrons of this place spending some good quality time. Some of the people who work there don't understand English, but they do treat you well. My family and I have been going to this place for about 5 years, we love the buns. Yesterday the older lady was waiting on a Chinese man, a younger lady came out to help, she didn't see me behind the man. She turned to go back in the back and the older lady called to her, I guess calling her name and said n*****. The man being waited on turned and looked at me. The young lady looked at me then she looked at the older cashier lady. And the older cashier lady looked down. I do not like to cause scenes. I didn't say anything. Oh Feida, you are fantastic. From the smokey back room filled with elderly Chinese men shooting the breeze, to your homemade signs, the dingy walls, scuffed floors and broken down refrigerator you are what dreams are made of. The pastries are delectable, from the Custard Bun to the BBQ Pork Bun, this is where Bao makes you go "Wow". A "must-try" is that of their "Cocktail Bun". It is an oval bun filled with a creamy coconut mixture that will delight you. (It is typically located to the left of the register on the bottom shelf.) They are also notable for their Dim Sum -- particularly that of their Siu Mai (See-yew My) a tasty ground pork "dumpling" that is mixed with shitake mushrooms and a delicate wonton wrapper. They are best taken to go, and re-steamed at home. If you are adventurous, however -- their spare ribs in black bean sauce and chicken feet are some of the best. People need to realize that the fortune cookie, the almond cookie and cake are all fanciful notions that were not developed in China. If you want to have fantastic Americanized and European pastries, then please take the Red Line away from "China" town. Feida is a must-see for me every time that I make it downtown. They have great prices, incredibly nice workers, and their food is simply fantastic. While you're there be sure to try their homemade soy bean milk. I'll have to keep updates on Feida because of new ownership. I currently like this place because their bakery goods are fresh and reasonably priced. I like their dim sum options too and their Cheong Fun (long rice noodles) are really tasty as their beef meatballs and steamed garlic ribs. You can tell Feida is the best Chinatown bakery completely due to the crowd inside at almost all times. My favorites are the flaky thin Winter Melon Cakes, the slightly sweet Gai Ma Bao (coconut bun), and the Honey Noodle Cake (a better version of a Rice Crispy Treat). At all times, they have dozens of different bakery items - cookies, bao, cakes, cake rolls, and everything in between. And!! Almost everything in the case of pastries is under $1, and you just can't beat that. At that price, you just have to walk out with a box full of pastries. Simple, delicious, cheap. A great finish to a meal, and a great way to end a visit to Chinatown in Chicago. The only reason I'm giving Feida, 4 stars is because of not taking credit cards but that's completely the norm in Chinatown. As for the baked goods, it's personal preference for most but this is by far one of the best Chinese bakery/pastry shops I've visited. I travel to Chicago a few times a year and I make every effort I can to make it to pick up specifically one thing: Wife's Cake (lo poa baing). My mom has informed me these are some of the best and biggest pastries you'll ever find of this cake and it's better than what she remembers from Hong Kong. I do get many of the other pastries: the bao varieties (cha siu bao, gai mei bao, bo lo bao), egg custard tarts, cake rolls, cookies, moon cakes ( when in season) and they are all consistently good and tasty, every visit. Preserved Duck Egg Cakes. I can't get enough of them, although if you want to eat the entire thing, I'd advise you to go in the morning right after they're put out on the shelf and still warm. Stopped here for dessert after DimSum nearby. My friends had been here before and RAVED about the sponge cakes and we "had to go get some this visit!" I obliged and am very glad we did. The sponge cakes are amazing. Light and fluffy but with a bit of crunch texture on the top from the browning! De-Lish-ious! After someone's recommendation, I decided to walk over to Old Chinatown and see what she really liked about Feida. As recommended, I got the coffee and the steamed bun. The bun and coffee was good but not spectacular. Since I really like savory bread, I got some roasted pork bun and curry beef to go. Since I ordered two of each and I gave 2 of them to a friend (who is leaving town) thinking we'd get 2 of each. Nope, I ended up getting two curry beef and my friend ended up getting two roasted pork bun. The amount of meat in my bun was really tiny. It was also a little lopsided. One section completely do not have any meat in it. Anyway, I still gave them another try. I ordered the roast pork bun the next time I went in. Again, same thing happened-- tiny amount of meat that is lopsided. Also, the bread is a little dry too. I really tried liking this place but in the end I went away disappointed. I don't know if this is normal for bakeries in Chinatown, but this place has the biggest chocolate chip cookies I've ever seen in my life. Unfortunately my sister and I kept tasting things in the cookie that didn't taste like "cookie" lol. At first it kind of tastes like a dinner roll, and then there's a hint of a chicken taste.. I don't know if that was just that particular batch, but I won't be trying any more of their sweets. For 70 cents after tax though, it's worth trying. The smoothies are good, pretty standard. It's not that big of a place there is some seating in the back of the location, but it's more of a come and order some buns to go place. The place as soon as you walk in shows a glass counter where you can see through to select the type of buns you would want to order. Along with those food options they also do have steamed dim sum that you could also order. I also enjoy there drinks mainly milk tea. This is my mom's favorite bakery so I've been coming here since I was a kid. I love their crystal shrimp dumplings and their shu mai is absolutely the best around. If you love buns, this is the place for you! There are buns everywhere and every kind of bun is equally represented from the traditional hot dog buns to ever popular red bean paste buns. Feida has the biggest & heartiest winter melon cake out of all the bakeries in Chinatown. It's a flat and round pastry that has a gooey and sweet center with a thick, doughy, yet flaky crust. I came here because the restaurant that I went to for lunch didn't give me a fortune cookie. So I saw those huge almond cookies from the window and I had to get some. I also got a couple slices of white chocolate cake. Hmm. I think that I would pass on both. The cake had no taste and it had some kind of gelatin in it?
