This store is very clean. The service is a hit or miss, but you can't take it personally because they do have to handle a large volume of people coming in and out. Take a tray and tongs and pick away. Coffee, tea, bubble (tapioca) tea is available. Seasonal items, like for Lunar New Year - they offer moon cakes. Plenty of seating abound but beware. Every Friday afternoon, there's a large group of elderly Indonesians that take up two tables and chatting up a storm. Among them is my father. Fay-da continues to be one of the best bakeries. The buns here are made daily and is always fresh. I do not know how they make their bun so nice and fluffy, but its really nice and fluffy. It is a great place to grab breakfast on the way to work if you live in the area. It is around the corner from the Grand Ave subway station. My favorites are the pork bun, milk cream, and pineapple buns. and Of course their Egg tarts, which is kept in a heater, so when you buy it, its as if you got it out fresh from the oven. Their drinks are also amazing. Its not water down and they actually make it according to your taste. If you say, no sugar - its no sugar, but still tastes amazing. The only downside to this place is that they leave the buns out and customers have to pick out their own buns. Its efficient, but some customers are rude and dirty. Freshly baked breads, different kinds of buns, cookies and cakes!!!! Yummy, Yummy for my tummy.....they have very good coffee too. My favorites are the Coconut and Milk Cream buns. I try not to pass by daily on my way to work in the mornings because I am scared of the calories.....THEY REGISTER with me RIGHT AWAY....... and the prices .....less than a dollar....very affordable. We came here for a snack. They had fresh soy milk so that's always exciting since that's harder to get in Chicago. We had some soy milk and then I had a taro puff. My husband had the scallion twist and then we had an egg tart to share. I love taro so i love my taro puff. It was packed full of taro filling, although it did get kind of squished when I used the tongs to get it on the tray. My husband liked the scallion bread. We both thought the egg tart was very good. This location gets pretty crowded and upon entering I was blocked by patrons who were stand ing around blocking the entryway like it's a museum hall. Could I conclude that they're suburbanites? Possibly. Or maybe they were dazzled by the sweet smells emanating from the store and reluctant to go out into the winter cold. There's a wide assortment of offerings on their shelves, but I didn't see egg tarts on the Monday afternoon when I popped in. Lady behind the cash register was quick to ask me what I wanted to buy but her answers had an uber foreign level of efficiency in communication that seemed a bit too fast-clipped and aggressive. It appeared decently clean but didn't really have that special sparkly vibe that makes you want to go back asap. With the large number of bakeries in walking distance, it's too bad this location doesn't try to be more competitive in their products and services but who knows maybe they cater to a particular demographic that doesn't include myself. Ordered a few birthday cakes in the past years. The cakes are okay. Their stuffs are not the best, but since it is the closest bakery to my home, I will just stop by if I need to grab a drink or a bun. It's OK here. Very large space with a lot of seating. But when I went in May, oh man was it blistering hot! No air condition, and I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. I normally love lots of things from Chinese bakeries: red bean bun, hot dog bun, etc, but this time I was really craving a fruit tart. They looked really good, and I ended up getting three. They weren't that good -- I prefer the ones from Chinatown instead. The crust was very thick, and hard to eat, mainly because it seemed like there were ground nuts in them or something. Also altered the taste a bit. Custard was flavorful. The fruit looked great, but some of them were not ripe, so it lacked sweetness and was way too firm. Also, it wasn't cheap -- at $2.25 it's significant, or maybe prices have gone up all around and I haven't caught up haha. The cakes looked good, but it seems a lot of them were more mousse like, and I prefer a fluffier and cake like dessert. I would consider coming back here again, but I was pretty turned off when I saw either an employee or customer (they were too close together to tell which one) sneeze on the buns. I work near by and I'd like to think Fay Da is to blame for my recent weight gain because they have delicious cheap Chinese desserts and great drinks that I just can't help over indulge. I noticed that Chinese bakery desserts are not as sweet as American or Italian or whatever bakeries and I love that! It's just the right amount of sweetness. Some favorites are the Japanese cheesecake, milk cream bun, chicken puff pastry (yummm), the steamed buns and tiramisu. I love the Horlicks drink and the coffee/milk tea as well. During the summer, I was hooked on their iced coffee! It's amazing! The service is quick and the ladies on the register aren't looking to make small talk. Pure crap. I use to like the buns from Fay Da but lately, their buns have been terrible. The dried pork bun and hot dog bun has always been the same. The others were trash. This place is ok. It's cheap, everything runs about a dollar give or take $0.50. However, the people that work here are ... undertrained for a lack of a better word. I waited on line behind 2 cashiers. There was 2 people in front of me but others that just came into the store just started stepping in front of the second cashier. It took me 15 minutes to pick up the TARO CAKE that I wanted which was already made in the display... After purchasing a groupon for a $20 deal worth $40, I was pretty excited to deal with Fayda Bakery. However, I have to say that this was the most horrible experience. I placed an order for my husband's birthday celebration on a Thursday for a Saturday pick up. The order was placed online and it was pretty easy. I had a couple of questions and called the number on the groupon for help. The person was very helpful and answered all my questions. I wasn't prepared for what came next. On Saturday, when trying to confirm whether the cake was ready for pick up, it was impossible to speak to someone in English. I called three times and finally was able to leave my cell for a call back. I don't live nearby and I was busy preparing everything for the party. I wanted to make sure that before I went to pick up the cake, it was ready. About half an hour later I got a call back from someone who asked me for my order #, name, phone number and date when I placed the order. After giving her all the info, she calls me back, once again and tells me that there was no cake and that they had never received an order from me. I was extremely upset. This totally ruined the occasion, I was forced to go out and purchase a last minute cake form another bakery. Long story short a different person calls me at 7:30pm when they in fact close at 8pm, to tell me that they do have a cake and that I had to go pick it up. This person was extremely rude and offensive, made racial comments and even told me over the phone that if I was expecting someone to speak Spanish to me. Fayda bakery is unreliable and should definitely work on improving their customer service skills. Not recommended for anyone out there considering using them for business. read more

The only reason why I come to the "Fay Da" Chinese bakery located on Justice Ave near Broadway is because I was looking for the "Saam Choi Geun" or the "Choi Hung Guen" (multicolored or rainbow cake roll - I can't remember which is the correct Chinese word.). All the neighboring bakeries do not sell the "multicolored" roll and my mom was craving it. Finally, upon going to the Fay Da location, I found the multicolored roll, nicely wrapped in transparent plastic paper. The multicolored roll is basically a long Chinese cake made up of different color cake squares, usually pink, standard yellow, and brown, with cream in between each square (or section). Every bakery that sells it makes it a little different, depending on how they want to separate the colors, but it's easily recognized as the multicolored cake. Think of it as going to the supermarket to buy a mini-loaf of bread except the bread is wrapped in clear plastic paper and is multi-colored. To my disappointment, the employees here speak strictly Mandarin so it's hard for me to understand them so I sort of avoid this place, but there's more selection here since the bakery is larger than the other neighboring bakeries around. Fay Da is also a chain bakery so it's more well known than the local bakeries. Even with the familiarity in name, the bakery is always semi-empty of customers when I go in. I'm guessing it is because its location is not near the main section of Broadway (around the 45th Ave area.) For those driving to this location, there are no parking spots near the area so it's more advantageous to park in the neighborhoods and walk. Inside Fay Da, there is a section to sit and eat after making a purchase. The prices here seems more expensive, but then everything seems to be more expensive nowadays. What I do love about the place is that it looks super clean with no crumbs or dirt in sight. When I brought the multicolored roll to my mom's house, my mom tasted it and thought the roll was much sweeter than the multi-colored roll that she bought in a bakery in Flushing. I like sweet foods so I can't complain much, but my mom prefers a more milder sweet taste. Unfortunately, my mom does not remember where she bought her multicolored roll. I started out not knowing what a multicolored roll is but after this experience, I am enlightened. Apparently, these multicolored rolls are getting quite popular. Not a bad place to grab a cheap breakfast or a cup of tea and a pastry. I stop in a couple of times a week on the way to work for breakfast to-go. I usually get the cheese bun or a hot dog bun, since that's easy for me to eat while walking. You would not want to come within 10 feet of me if I'm walking and eating anything messier :) I've tried some of the other pastries and they're mostly pretty good. I wouldn't say come out of your way to try this place but it's a quick and convenient spot to grab breakfast or a snack. I'm not a fan of their cakes though - they're OK, but there are just better ones to be had elsewhere, like DuBois Bakery (mmmm...) Coffee and bubble tea are not bad either. Awesome, okay, I'm no expert in chinese bakeries, but I love the service and the food here. The coffee is great, and I like being able to pick out my own pastries. No one rushes me, even when Its busy. They have a beautiful array of desserts i have yet to try, and regular pastry items that I love, especially the sweet topping bun and the cream filled ones. The steamed buns are great too. This particular location always has all different kinds of people visiting it, and its very popular and delicious. Too bad I am on a diet now! I love the Taipan and the Fay Da bakery Chain, it's really enjoyable, cheap and reliable. Great staff, great selection of desserts and pastries, and excellent price. When you come here, try the pork buns and the lotus steam wraps; it's the best. The mousse cake is pretty good so try it out. You want interesting food? This is the place for you. Their breads/sweets range from beef curry to green tea rice balls. They also have regular stuff like croissants, pigs in a blanket and cheesecake. I don't eat steamed buns but they sell fresh ones in the front. They also have bubble tea. Their desserts are pretty good, not awesome but not bad either. I don't like how everything is open and you grab what you want, i worry about germs.
