When I come here, I normally get curry puff pastry, sesame balls, and hot dog buns with an iced milk tea with/without pearls. This location is conveniently located outside the Jackson Heights subway station so you can get a quick bite before or after work. The food for the most part has been fresh. There are plenty of options to choose from -- though I do think it is a tad bit more expensive than Rainbow Bakery. Service-wise -- the employees are friendly. They speak Mandarin as well so if you are a native speaker, you can get your point across faster. You can always eat inside, but from what I've seen the bakery has usually been pretty packed during the morning hours so you have to be lucky to get a spot. Also, because it is located near the subway station, I've seen instances where homeless people would come in and beg for change. Update after my 9/10/23 review: I walk past Fay Da every morning on my commute to work. On 10/12/23, there was a sign in the door. "Closed by health and safety." They opened back up a little more than a week later. When a food and drink related business is closed by NYC health and safety, it is severe and takes a very long time to get back open. What was the reason they were closed? How did they get permission to open so soon? The only reason I go to FD bakery is to pick up pastries for my parents but they know this place has a grade pending and don't want me to come here. The pastries are okay, definitely not the best. Have been going to this location for years. The food has always been good and the staff were fine for the most part. Until today. When I went to pay for my food, the total cost being $4.10 all together, I handed a $10 bill, but the cashier tried to pull a fast one on me. She gave me 10 cents back and didn't give me the rest of my change. When I asked where is the rest of my change, the lady claimed I gave her $5.00. I was appalled. I insisted she give me back my change and we got into a whole argument. Even the other staff women were siding with her and ganging up on me when I know how much I gave in cash. I didn't budge until she rudely gave me back the rest of my change. I don't know what happened to the staff here, but beware when you give in cash. Make sure they give you back the correct change since it looks like they don't want to give you back what you're owed. Fay Da is a neighborhood favorite and it's clear why. I've had their bread on several occasions now and none of them disappointed. Though the prices are a teensy bit higher than your average Chinese bakery, the cleanliness, packaging, and presentation of the goods here are a notch above the rest. I've had their pineapple coconut bun, sponge cake, and their coconut roll (pictured here). All were delicious. Their bread is really soft and slightly sweet. The pineapple coconut bun had ample amounts of that coconut flake filling that I love. The sponge cake really surprised me too. I thought it would be your average sponge cake, but it was so soft, fluffy, and cloudlike. The texture was similar to a Japanese cloud cheesecake. They sometimes have the matcha version as well. This Fay-Da has really cleaned up their act here. The store has new furniture and has expanded itself with more diverse baked items. Out of all the Fay-Da's that I have been to this is is my favorite for there are more tables than the one's in Forest Hills. Not a mob scene like Tai Pan or 88 Bakery. The staff is friendly and helpful. Not just ring you up and collect money from you like many of these Asian Bakeries. I see more variety of Croissants with different fillings like the one's you see at Au Bon Pain. Folks this is a neighborhood one. The regular peeps are friendly and if they see you looking for seats they motion you to join them or let you know they done, so you can sit down. They even leave the paper for the next patron to sit relax, eat and read the paper. My favorite is the corn and ham bun. The middle is creamy- other bakeries do not make them the same way. I don't know where I get these "$10 gift certificates" to asian bakeries but I always end up having them around. I had one for Fay Da and I've been meaning to get some stuff for breakfast. A lot of what you get here you can buy cheaper at other asian bakeries. I initially wanted to buy their vanilla roll cake which they have for $11 but I buy from another asian bakery for $6. So, instead I bought a few muffins, a corn bun, a curry pocket, and a coconut raisin bread. I don't know why they put nuts in it but I do like the muffins. Their corn pastry I enjoyed the corn part but the pastry part was a little dry. I also thought the curry pocket was dry as well. It was also super flaky and the curry part inside I thought could have had more flavor. All together the price for everything was about $10.50. I probably wouldn't come back unless I had one of those gift certificate again. They do make a bunch of drinks though. I sometimes go to get milk tea which they make pretty well. read more

There is a very large seating area and they have a much bigger selection of hot and cold food, with and without meat. There are also a lot of pastries and cakes and bubble tea available. Well I came back and avoided the desserts, and instead found their panko crusted fish sandwiches and curry...pockets? Buns? Puffs? Whatever they are in the heated case. The fish is fresh, with lettuce on on a soft bun. I think they go a little heavy with the tartar sauce but it's still delicious. The curry pocket is the real winner though. I come to this location about 3 times a week because my boss always buys breakfast when we're working. So.. I've only been here in the morning. As other reviews have said, the store sometimes does get very crowded and the line might scare you off but they move very quickly!! So don't be alarmed. The ladies who work there are also very sweet, however they don't speak English well. That's just about all the good things I can say about this place though. Although I do like their assortment of pastries and bakery goods, I constantly see the shelves EMPTY or with barely anything left. The egg custards have been in that rotating heat thing for so long I always see that the aluminum cup which holds the custard is BURNT to the paper. None of their drinks are made consistently despite having the same order (3) times a week for almost a year and a half now. Some days there will be too much sugar, some days not enough. There are also some breads that you have to order behind the counter, for example the lotus leaf wrap that comes to a whopping $3!! It use to be $2.50 and larger, but now it is $3 and smaller. This is also a hit or miss, sometimes there's a lot of meat and sometimes there's none at all. My grandparents live in this neighborhood so I visit often. Walking out of the R/V train station "Grand Avenue Newtown", you only need to turn a corner and walk a quarter of a block before hitting what is perhaps one of the biggest Fay Da bakeries between Queens and Chinatown in Manhattan. Compared to say, the Fay Da on Mott Street in Manhattan, this one is cavernous with tone of room not only for seating, but also to walk and browse the aisle. I never feel cramped in here be it morning, afternoon or evening. Since the primary counter is self serve, the spacious store is really welcome as you can take time to browse for what you want without getting knocked into by fifty tourists and neighborhood residents. The food at Fay Da ranges from "Meh." to "Oh my god how have I lived without this?!" good. Among the things I count as "meh" or average are their plain butter rolls and their roast pork buns (they seem to be getting a bit stingy the past year on the roast pork). However, other buns they have such as their taro buns are sweet, soft, tasty and creamy on the inside. Their "Puffs" including taro flavor are beautiful to behold and have a wonderfully sweet flavor that is mild. I also loooove their coconut buns, which have an almond cookie topping on the outside of the bun and an insanely sweet and buttery coconut filling. Want something a bit different? Their "cheese danish" is not like what you'd find in a coffee shop, but rather it's a pastry stick with melted cheese on top - it's amazing. Salty sweet goodness that I think I may need to try with pasta one day! Let me start off saying I automatically deduct 1 star from anywhere that lacks a public restroom and another star for any place that is cash only. If I remember correctly, this location has a public sink and since this place is used for carryout, I'm more lenient about the lack of a restroom. I like the assortment of sandwiches and pastries the bakery has to offer. The staff is efficient and the registers actually show you the total price. It's easy to calculate beforehand, in line, because there is no tax (and there shouldn't be as long as this place remains cash only). My favorite pastries from here are the egg custard tarts and the custard filled sweet breads. The sandwiches are maybe 3" in length, but their bread is so much better than that of a nearby "competitor." One sandwich costs around 2.25 to 2.95, depending on which kind. So, the food is great. The atmosphere is okay. The staff have to accept pennies more often, since they are cash only. It does help that the prices of the goods are nice round numbers. -1 for cash only policy read more

The bao zi (Chinese buns) like bo luo bao (pineapple bun) are reliably good and priced the way most Chinese bakeries would be, and it's nice that this place looks spiffier and has more seating than the average Chinese bakery. I'm not a fan of supporting chain businesses like this usually (even if it's not the McDonald's of Chinese bakeries yet), so I'd prefer to get my Chinese stuff from a smaller place, but like I said, when in doubt, you can rely on this place for the regular stuff. In terms of cake, though, my boyfriend got my birthday cake from here - a fresh fruit whipped cream cake Chinese style. The fruit was fresh and the whipped cream was decent, but the cake was just so-so; just average sponge cake, not amazing like the way I'd envisioned it to be like my beloved Eldo Bakery in Boston Chinatown. The whipped cream also lacked some sort of oomph, but I'm not sure how to describe it. I'm still searching for that light, airy, barely sweetened Chinese cake that I dream about at Eldo. My favorite bun would be the Chocolate & Walnut bun, it's cheap & so filling! This is just the right amount of sweetness for those who think "less is more", like me. I am sooo pissed at this place? I spent like $15-$20 getting sliced cakes for family and they were all horrible! It wasn't just the taste of the cakes, but the fact that the creams tasted off as if the milk had gone bad. I was sooo disappointed and embarrassed bc they were taken as desserts for my sister's place. I am never going back to this place again and may never go to a bakery from this franchise ever again.
