Overall pretty good! We did not know they had a special tonight and you could tell they were very understaffed (I don't think intentionally, I think they just don't have enough employees in these times). It took maybe 2 or so minutes to be greeted and seated which was just a little uncomfortable because we had to stand close to seated tables. Our waitress was prompt and got everything correct. She was also very pleasant. The food came out within 5 minutes of ordering but was somehow cool. Despite not being very warm, the food was amazing! Next time we may get to-go so we can avoid the crowd and make sure we can heat up our food. read more

I've only eaten here a few times primarily because it gets crowded and parking can be difficult. However, what I have eaten here (BBQ and Burgers) has been good and service was good as well. I recommend going before or after the peak crowd hours. read more

We've been to Fat Larry's about 6 times in the past year (we live an hour away so it's not "in the neighborhood" ... we went when in the area). Some in our family liked it, some didn't, because we had had some issues in the past, both food related and on a couple of occasions, service related. We didn't complain at the time (we're not much on complaining, if something isn't satisfactory, we just usually don't go back). But we talked them into going again last night. We won't make that mistake again. The conundrum is that some things about it are just fine, but several things are not fine at all. For example, my bbq sandwich was great. Three of us ordered baked potatoes (we arrived at about 4:15pm) and the waitress had to come back out and tell us the baked potatoes weren't ready yet and that it would be a long time before they were done. ??? (Who forgot to put the potatoes in the oven at the right time???) My sister's salad had a bug in it (a small bug, but a bug is a bug and doesn't belong in the food). But we were understanding, realizing that sometimes "stuff happens" and let it go. Another person had catfish nuggets, which were very good. Another person in our party ordered a burger - well done. She took her first bite and it was medium (at best), quite red inside. Well done means no pink ... and DEFINITELY means "absolutely NO RED!!" So she asked the waitress if they could cook it a little more to get it well done. She said, "sure." (The waitress was super nice, efficient and helpful.). When she brought it back, the person who ordered it lifted the bun to check to see if the pink was all gone and the burger (and the edges of the bun) were black as coal ... burnt to a crisp. Guess the cook had the attitude of "I'll show her ... I'll burn that sucker!" And he (or she) did. Our waitress did the best she could under the circumstances and we tipped her well for her efforts. She isn't responsible for food quality problems. But that was definitely the final straw. The decision was made for us, with the intentionally burnt hamburger. We'll miss those catfish nuggets, but we'll find them somewhere else in the future. read more

We were passing through Memphis on family vacation from San Antonio, TX and wanted to try some good Memphis area BBQ. I found this gem here on Yelp. I mean, every single thing was delicious down to the amazing hot rolls and fantastic sweet tea that isn't too sweet. I had the pork nachos and man they had such great textures and flavors. My husband and mother-in-law shared the BBQ sample for two that consisted of ribs (got them muddy), brisket, chicken and potato salad. My parents both had the brisket plate also with potato salad. I had some of everyone's food and man that brisket was brilliant. They give you a knife to cut it but I honestly don't know why because it is sooo tender your fork is all you need. The potato salad was probably the BEST I've ever had!! I want the recipe sooo badly. The server was excellent as well. Great, great service and hospitality. I was in the mood for steak and didn't want to go to the chain joints so we stopped at a local spot. Larry's is in the running for a good neighborhood burger/steak house! Although the staff was shorthanded, the ladies tag teamed us and took very good care. The beers were cold, the food came out quick and hot. We had a steak burger with coleslaw and a ribeye loaded potato. Both dishes were cooked perfectly, potato done well, all in all pleased with my purchase. We ordered three appetizers just to try them and all three were awesome. Cheese cubes, fried green beans and fried mushrooms **see pics posted. The kids and I ordered catfish and the hubby got a BBQ sandwich. The portions were good the fish was cooked beautifully and the hush puppies were yummy. The food was okay but it was served in small portions, pricey, and lukewarm. The place was packed for Friday's lunch. So, why cut corners.

We dine there often until the past couple of months and the prices are as expensive as Firebirds and the quality has gone way down. The fried pickles are now terrible and taste like catfish. The ribeye steak was mostly fat with about 5 French fries on the side. They are consistently out of items either baked potatoes, prime rib, filets and who knows on whatever given night it will be. The quality has gone way down since Larry passed away. It's a shame because it used to be so good. I will give a shout out to a server named Connie. She is very good at her job. read more

Ok we had the grilled fish and bbq sampler. The catfish was decent char flavored and standard cold slaw. The bbq was average overly dry 3piece ribs with little smoke flavor, brisket was not so good tough for the lean cut and over cooked and finally the pork shoulder was ok. The pass glory doesn't show up for the trophy's on display. A typical memphis hole I n the wall joint. Also the banana pudding seemed to be out of a box. read more

At first when we use to go, it was good! After a few times, a couple of the wait staff seemed to be more interested in talking to each other about personal issues,(rather loudly actually). It seems to be a hit or miss with the food, depends on who's cooking back there. Wait staff makes off color comments on how you want your food if it doesn't suit their tastes. My daughter and I decided to eat at Fat Larry's last night and sat on the porch. I had enjoyed this place previously with my husband as it was great food, close to the house, and great service. The place had obviously been packed as it was Friday night but was starting to empty out upon our arrival. We were told to pick a place on the porch but there wasn't one table clean but only a few tables occupied. That wasn't a great big deal, so I started cleaning it off. My daughter asked where we could put the trash, dishes, bottles, etc., the waiter replied that 'he would get to it when he got to it'. I guess that should've been our first clue as to how the dining experience would go from there. The waiter looked at us several times within a 25 minute period, but sat down and discussed with 2 tables very belligerent political rhetoric before he decided to finally get up and get us a menu and take a drink order.We thought at that time that it was best to do appetizers too because of the time it took to get menus. He then sat down again at a customers table and would look over at us occasionally like we were making him uncomfortable by staring at him (that was my intention). Another 20 minutes passed and 2 warm beers were served right up! We asked about the previously ordered appetizers and he then informed us they were out of fried pickles. That would've been nice to know right after they were ordered over 20 minutes ago..but, oh well! Come to find out he never put the appetizers in initially so it only took another 20 minutes and we finally had appetizers with an empty beer! He took our order right then (Thank Goodness) and tried to be patient as we asked questions. He then disappeared a moment, came back out to the porch (not with the 2 new beers we ordered), and proceeded to sit back down at the table with the 2 customers who he seemed to be there to entertain. For about 30 minutes we sat there waiting and occasionally glaring over to his table where he had been perched for the better part of our lovely dining experience. Not one word said as to how long it would be, 'let me check on that', 'I apologize for your wait', etc. We were obviously an inconvenience. The meals finally came (but not those 2 beers-we just gave up at that point) The chicken fried steak and filet were great but completely overshadowed by the lack of service and attention we received overall . We ordered 125.00 worth of food because I took a couple racks home for the kids as well. They were very disappointing to say the very least. They were tough, dry and flavorless and didn't have the sides that I had specifically requested. I had bragged about Fat Larry's several times in the past to several people but will no longer do so from this point forward. I haven't been that disappointed in a restaurant's performance in many years. read more

I was in the other day and this server named Liz was SO AWESOME! She was carding some punk kid who just turned 21. You would absolutely not believe her behavior. Liz handled everything well and according to the state of Tennessee. The owner of this establishment is lucky to have her. That young lady who acted out, who is clearly not from the South needs a good glass of sweet tea and a lesson on manners. Oh! The food was great too. I especially those beets! I'm giving this place 5 stars minus todays visit . This place does have the best bbq . We aren't from here but have been here for 3 weeks for work . . Every other time we have went has been great . Service food all of it . Well today my husband orders prime rib. Now before he does he asks do You have raw horse radish ( not my cup of tea but whatever) she says yes we have it . He continues to order his food . He gets his food he's all happy . She comes back and says oh we don't have horse radish . Like what ! That's the only reason he ordered what he ordered . So she takes his plate because he no longer wants it . She tells another waitress who I assume may have been managing or something how he didn't want it and she says wow that's just silly . Now that's a rude thing to say but if someone's paying 40 bucks for a piece of meat then they have a right to want what they want ! I so wanted to tell her that my husband wanting this nasty horse radish was no where near as silly as her freaking eye brows looked . And now we are done with this place . read more

We are from South Florida and evacuating from Hurricane Irma. Decided to come all the way up to Memphis, where we found this hole-in-a-wall gem. It does not look like much on the outside. However, inside we were greeted by incredibly friendly staff. I ordered the BBQ sampler, which comes with Ribs, Brisket, pulled pork, and two sides. It was absolutely DIVINE, and the best BBQ I have ever had. For dessert, we shared a banana pudding and apple pie. Both were delicious.
