Hush Puppies

I have been wanting to try Fat Larry's for a very long time. The cool back story is that I went to college with Larry's wife Ginny. Small world for sure. The menu is definitely very extensive. Known for excellent BBQ, there are many other menu items to choose from. I had a cheeseburger to celebrate my birthday. It was cooked very well and had a good chargrilled flavor. The fries were crinkle cut which are my fav. The seasoning was tasty. We started dinner off with the hush puppies that had a pickle flavor. They were different and delicious. For dessert, I ordered the caramel cheesecake. I was pretty full from dinner so took a few bites which were heavenly! I took the rest home to enjoy. I will come back to try the BBq.

Where to begin? This meal at Fat Larry's BBQ was a revelation. Every piece of meat on the sampler was fork-tender and moist. The mastery of the pitmaster shines through: the smoke enhances the meat's flavor profile without ever overpowering the delicate seasoning. Among the decent sides, the beans stood out as truly exceptional--a perfect balance of sweetness and savoriness. The portions are wonderfully generous for the price, a welcome relief in the local dining scene. Ambiance, say what!?! Casual. This place is welcoming for a family dinner or a solo indulgence. Come as you are, embrace the slight mess, and prepare to leave completely satisfied.

I am a firm believer that in the cities known for iconic food, the best of that particular food will not come from one of those tourist traps that tourists flock to, but rather these local mom-and-pop restaurants that are often hole-in-the-wall type places. In Memphis, Tennessee, tourists come for barbecue and a few of the iconic places have lines out the door, but it is these local hole-in-the-wall places like Fat Larry's BBQ that you find the locals flocking to. On the particular Tuesday evening that I was there, the place was jammed with locals. I did find a parking spot and walked into the humble interior, I looked around and saw almost every table was filled with smiling faces. Looking at the menu, I had it narrowed down to either their "award winning" pork or their chicken. I asked my server which of the two she would recommend and she pointed me more towards the pork. I kept with the standard sides of beans and coleslaw. My food came out pretty quick and for the money (I believe it was about twelve dollars), they gave you a lot of food. I found the sides okay, but the pork was very good. Let me be clear, the sides were good, just not great. The pork was definitely good. I would definitely recommend here.

Cute restaurant with great food. The brisket sandwich was great. The charcuterie board had many great items to share. The sausage was loved by the entire family. Thought I would add a current menu. February 2025.

I would 100% go back. I don't get bbq cravings too often but this is the place to go when I do. Service is amazing and kind. We were seated and served quickly. The place is a bit rustic but reminds me of an awesome bbq joint. We tried the bbq sampler platter and the loaded fries. I would definitely get the pork and ribs again, the brisket is a bit different than what I'm used to. Coleslaw is delicious and light. I could have 10 of the rolls that were served to us. Loaded fries were crispy and full of toppings.

I am not a local and heard this was the place to go to for some BBQ. I skipped the Yelp reviews because it's someone who has generally good recommendations. Omg! This is the best BBQ I've had in a very long time. The sauce they use is full of flavor, and it's got a thicker consistency (almost like a salsa). It goes great with chicken, ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. I got the deluxe platter so I could try all the things I could in one go. I also tried the beans, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and their bread. The beans are good, the mac is okay, their coleslaw is not the best, and their bread is really good. If you are reading this review to decide if you should give it a try. Please don't hesitate and go try it. If I am ever back in town, it will be the first place I'll go.

We ordered takeout for lunch and it was delicious. 1. Pulled pork - great flavors and tasty! I would order every time I went. (5/5 ) 2. Bbq sauce - this was a unique style, and it enhanced the pork. I enjoyed it. (5/5 ) 3. Cole slaw - great prep and delicious flavors. (5/5 ) 4. Baked Beans - great seasoning and paired nicely with the pork. (4.5/5 ) 5. Mac and cheese - unique style but a little watery. (3.5/5 ) I would return and eat at the restaurant. I would also order many more dishes to try.

Yep I do love this place! Good fried food, good bbq, and my personal favorite good fried catfish. Chill and calm ambience, nice outdoor patio-style seating and good service. We always got what we need and will definitely be back again.

Burnt ends beans and mashed potatoes

Thought this place was great! Was really glad I randomly got to try it. It's a small place but seems to have adequate seating and parking. They had burnt ends on the special board so I had to get them but wanted to try the ribs too. Unfortunately you can only add bones to the meal if you order steak. So that stunk. Other than that the beans, the mashed potatoes, and the burnt ends were great! Can't wait to get back there and try the ribs!

This location is a large building with lots of seating options. I had to try Central as it keeps winning awards and is consistently mentioned as the top BBQ place in the Memphis area. Some of their awards were displayed at the entrance and on the walls. Lots of history. My wife ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich and had the slaw on the side so I could have it (she's not a slaw fan). I had the small order of ribs with 1/2 dry and 1/2 wet with sides of BBQ Beans and Mac n Cheese. I tried the pulled pork and it was tender and delicious. My ribs were pretty good with my favorite part being the wet ribs. The dry part was overcooked and really dry and chewy. This was a bit of a disappointment. The BBQ beans were flavorful but a bit mushy. The Mac n cheese also mushy a bit but tasted better than it looked. I love great BBQ so I like Central BBQ but may have caught them on a bad day. Oh, they were out of a lot of T Shirt options/size I wanted too. Darn. I wanted to buy one. I would return and try the brisket, pulled pork or poultry items next time.

This entire restaurant is built on a slight slope, and they did not level the foundation when building out the restaurant, so if you're sitting at your table and the table is aligned north to south, you will see a slight lean to the flooring. Also, if you have any juices on your plate of food, the juices will flow toward Beale Street. I wanted to try their tamales but will have to do it on a subsequent visit. This visit we ordered the bowl of gumbo and the Memphis strip steak which is pre-cut for you. The gumbo is slightly salty but good. The strip steak was really good, filling and cooked to order. I chose new potatoes as my one side. Service here can be a little difficult depending how busy they are and how wild your fellow patrons in the restaurant can be. It took a long time to pay the bill here due to a large party coming in right when we were wanting to pay and our server was attending to them for about 15 mins while we were trying to flag him down. Other than that, we had no other problems. I would happily return the next time I'm in the downtown area and looking for food near Beale Street.

There is plenty of parking in a lot across the street. We went inside and found it to be pretty busy, but we got a table for 4 quickly. The place was clean and homey-feeling and I loved the fact that they used disposable plates, utensils and napkins! It is probably way easier on the crew to clean up, and it adds to the relaxed atmosphere. I had the corn nuggets to start, yum! We finished them easily, they were so good. Then the entree of my chicken tenders, beans, and Mac and cheese came out, along with my sweet tea. The sweet tea was perfect, I drank a whole one during my meal and they gave me another to go in the souvenir Gus's cup. The food was just great, chicken was juicy and perfectly crunchy on the outside. Beans and Mac and cheese, delicious! I ate all of it even though I was stuffed. I even went so far as to order a piece of pecan pie for dessert, but unfortunately our server came back out to tell us they were out of it! Guess it wasn't meant to be (this time)! Our server was really friendly during our whole meal, chatted with us a little and made sure we had a great experience! Bottom line.... Go to Gus's!

The atmosphere was casual and welcoming, making it a comfortable spot to grab a bite. I wasn't really a fan of the mac and cheese, as it leaned way too heavily on the processed cheese flavor and ended up overly cheesy in a not-so-great way. The texture and taste reminded me more of melted processed cheese than a rich, homemade mac and cheese. However, the service was delightful and easily made up for some of the disappointment with the sides. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcomed throughout the visit. While not everything hit the mark for me, the great service and tasty fried chicken make Gus's worth trying if you're in the mood for comfort food.

My wife and I really enjoyed ourselves here and for what it might lack in some areas, the character and staff more than make up for it. We had a seat at a crossroads area where two in-restaurant walkways merged and there was no shortage of ongoing activity throughout our visit. We shared the perfect sized Pork Ribs and Brisket Combo with sides of beans and coleslaw. The meats are all charcoal grilled and tasted very good. They put a LOT of dry seasoning on the ribs. I liked the baked beans and mustard vinegar slaw as well. They were a nice compliment to our meats. The ribs were a bit dry but good with the added tangy BBQ sauce that is on every table. I even bought a bottle to take home. Our server was Mark F and was very seasoned and professional. He did a great job. I love these types of old school places with an "if these walls could talk" vibes. Also love their website name: HogsFly.com. Hilarious! Everyone needs to try this place at least once.
