When I left Portland, so did Boxer Ramen. I have tried and tried to replicate their Curry Ramen and it just was never the same. I was so sad that I would never get to taste it again.... Until. Fat Kitty Ramen revived the best ramen menu I've had in the world and brought back the Vegetable Curry Ramen I knew and loved! I am so happy they decided to stick a well-known menu because it was such a hit, they just had some behind-the-curtain issues. I will say that the ramen didn't have as much flavor as I remember it having, but I'm sure it's hard for them to do an exact match. I'm sure they can tweak it over time. It's also a bit nicer because it's not as spicy and my fiance that hates spice can now enjoy it. This was my first time trying the tots and how fun! I got the fish flakes on the side because I wasn't sure how well they would work, but I ended up dipping into them and really enjoyed it. I don't know if I could've handled the fill bowl on top but it was a fun twist to tater tots. We got there as soon as they opened and people started trickling in, it was a nice low-lit ambience and an open-kitchen concept. Now I look forward to visiting Portland just to have Fat Kitty again. read more

My son and I have eaten here several times but first since the name change. 12 yo loved the edamame. Served hot and seasoned well. We sat at the bar and service was very attentive. Almost too much. I had the tantanmen. With fried tofu. Good if a little muddled. 12 yo loved tonkotsu shio. He thought it was good as any where else. I don't think we will be back but 12 yo might persuade me. Bad waitresses with attitude. Not a jealous person. Just a 1st date, hardly got to know him. But the snooty waitress complimented my dates fallout fan jacket, she was smiling and overly laughing at his small talk. She lingered and wouldn't make eye contact with me. When she came by to make sure everything's OK twice, again she asked him only, I even answered and she didn't even look at me, she ignored me. It was really weird. Fat Kitty Ramen has a simple menu of 4 ramens, bowls with various protein options and shareable plates/appetizers. The interior is really nice and well done. Service is good as well. The ramen didn't do it for me here. The main 4 varieties of ramen were vegetarian mushroom, traditional pork tonkatsu, curry ramen, and spicy ramen. I tried the curry ramen. It was ok. I absolutely hated the pickled mushrooms that came with it. For me the taste was overpowering and just not what I want in my ramen. For those that like pickled mushrooms maybe this is your thing. It was the predominant topping just because it's so strong tasting. Noodles were good. The broth itself was just ok but, lacked a strong complex flavor and just tasted slightly spicy. Fat Kitty is casual, cozy, and comforting like your favorite hoodie in restaurant form. The restaurants atmosphere was cool and welcoming. The broth was flavorful, the meat was hearty, and the noodles were tasty. This place was an overall win. I came with an appetite, and end up getting 4 dishes. I started with the Okonomiyaki Tots. Just regular tater tots but looked like they were alive, watch the video I posted. It was interesting but cool haha. Also got the potstickers, they were fried and had crispy edge and went well with the homemade sauce they provide. I got the spicy red miso with an extra serving of noodles. It was about a 5 out 10 on the spice level, I'm sure anybody can handle it. My favorite part was the soft poached egg. My friend got the vegetable curry, with a serving of pork belly. I would say hers was better than mine. From our point of view it was creamier than mine. The customer service here was spectacular. Our waitress Emma, was on it with her service. She was patient with us as we studied the menu, and recommended things to try. She also was very attentive and made sure we were enjoying ourselves and the food. I hope you get lucky enough to get her. Parking was rough but what can you do. If you're going into the city this is what you get. Don't let that deter you from going to try this place. Excellent ramen with several options. They have non-ramen menu items too if that's not your thing. Everything I've tried has been excellent and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant is super cute, but a little on the small side. There is both table and counter seating. For all that, they can seat a surprising number of people! No customer restroom inside the restaurant, they share an exterior restroom with the neighboring business. read more

Very impressed with this restaurant, they got a lot of things right! The restaurant itself was beautiful and clean, staff were very attentive and accommodating, and the food was delicious. We tried the spicy ramen and were pleasantly surprised. The noodles were tender, the egg was perfectly runny, there was a generous amount of meat, but most of all the broth was one of the best spicy versions I've had in Portland. Supposedly this is the successor to Boxer Ramen, my wife's favorite ramen joint in PDX. Sadly, according to the expert (her), it's just not the same. My wife was practically addicted to the Spicy Miso ramen, but upon ordering it from this new iteration in the same location, she left sadly disappointed. The broth, the heat level, and the flavor all were bland and underwhelming; additionally, the soft boiled egg was hardly boiled at all, and more of a soupy mess. It was difficult for her to put a pin on what was different, but her determination was that the mix had been altered, and the overall quality had taken a dive. Perhaps this was a one-off incident, but it definitely soured her on her once-favorite brand. And with culinary competitors like Akasaru Ramen just down the street, nipping at their heels, this Fat Kitty had better learn to start running, or it'll end up a dead-end alley cat. read more

If you were like me and mourn the loss of Boxer Ramen and its incredible flavor, the best news in the world is IT'S BACK! No longer owned by the previous person, this is all of the greats back with their own shop and in such a decadent location. It was such a pleasure to tell them I revered the Veggie Curry as my all time favorite ramen ever. When I heard it was back, I returned at least 3 times that month to reintroduce friends who also loved Boxer. The menu is exactly the way we left it, and that includes the Yuzu sake too. Okonamayaki Tots are incredible, and eases you in nicely before taking on the greatest entre of all time, the veggie curry ramen. Mushroom, the headiest brother, and even corn make for such a damn fine gift to mankind, I honestly can't get enough. The prices are great too, you get enough to be fully satisfied after the meal. The service is really nice here and they appreciate that we stayed fans even after the Boxer closures. It's so great to have this place back. read more

I visited Fat Kitty Ramen for dinner recently. There was about a 20 minute wait and the restaurant was busy. The service was friendly but harried due to it being busy. I got the spicy red miso ramen and shared the salted edamame with my boyfriend. The edamame were overly salted. The ramen had great noodles but the broth wasn't flavorful and the pork was just ok. I may give Fat Kitty a try again in the future but at this time, I don't recommend them. read more

This spot seems pretty popular because there can be a wait. The decor and vibe makes it a fun place, but the service felt a bit overwhelmed or maybe it can be described as laid back? It just didn't seem very friendly. The ramen itself looked good, except the soft egg. I had the Tonkotsu shio ramen and the broth was on the light side. The pork cha shu was on the crispy side but OK. I just couldn't get past the egg. The white was so soft it was wiggly. That's way too soft for me. Place was cute. Tots were ok. Ramen was a little salty. I actually had a hair in my ramen and didn't notice until after I took a picture of the food. If you zoom in, you can see it. And no it was not my hair. I have a hard time bringing up issues about my food so I just took it out and continued on (gross I know) but sometimes it's awkward to bring these things up and I didn't want to make it a big deal. My friends and I are new to Portland so we didn't know where to have dinner until we saw Fat Kitty Ramen close by. We took a shot in the dark and went inside, they have a beautiful inside dining and outside seating on the side of the restaurant. We decided to sit outside and had an amazing waitress named Emma, she was so attentive, friendly, and incredibly welcoming. Due to some technical difficulties with their POS system, Emma was so graciously kind and comped our appetizers and the food was delicious! She even was sweet enough to give us more edamame for the wait, and we ordered two of their Tonkotsu Shio ramen. Hands down one of the best ramen I have ever had, the pork belly is bursting with flavor and the broth was incredible. I want my fat kitty! Hands down the best chicken teriyaki I've had in Portland to date. The veggie fritters, pot stickers, and tots (covered in seaweed and bonito flakes) were all amazing appetizers. If you've been to the Boxer ramen that was here before, it is the exact same menu/quality ramen, & they got rid of all their "sushi" options. They have the Tonkotsu, Spicy Miso, veggie curry & 1 other flavor of ramen. The tonkotsu was a bit below average. Not very deep or rich broth and the chashu was also unexceptional, crispy part was not crispy/charred enough & tender part wasn't tender enough. Akasaru ramen is right across the street & has better ramen IMO. The only thing that is nicer here is the ambience. read more

Yummy food, friendly service. I love the atmosphere here and good price for what you get. I always leave feeling full and nourished. The pork in the tonkastu is so tender and yummy, the okanami tots are so good. Ate at the Multnomah Village location. It's a small location but the food is well worth the wait! I had the Spicy Miso Ramen. It's the perfect ramen for a cold night. Also had the pan fried dumplings. The dipping sauce is not like a traditional sauce. It has a bit of a bite to it which I love. Pricing I would say $$.
