Fat Kitty Ramen has a simple menu of 4 ramens, bowls with various protein options and shareable plates/appetizers. The interior is really nice and well done. Service is good as well. The ramen didn't do it for me here. The main 4 varieties of ramen were vegetarian mushroom, traditional pork tonkatsu, curry ramen, and spicy ramen. I tried the curry ramen. It was ok. I absolutely hated the pickled mushrooms that came with it. For me the taste was overpowering and just not what I want in my ramen. For those that like pickled mushrooms maybe this is your thing. It was the predominant topping just because it's so strong tasting. Noodles were good. The broth itself was just ok but, lacked a strong complex flavor and just tasted slightly spicy. When I left Portland, so did Boxer Ramen. I have tried and tried to replicate their Curry Ramen and it just was never the same. I was so sad that I would never get to taste it again.... Until. Fat Kitty Ramen revived the best ramen menu I've had in the world and brought back the Vegetable Curry Ramen I knew and loved! I am so happy they decided to stick a well-known menu because it was such a hit, they just had some behind-the-curtain issues. I will say that the ramen didn't have as much flavor as I remember it having, but I'm sure it's hard for them to do an exact match. I'm sure they can tweak it over time. It's also a bit nicer because it's not as spicy and my fiance that hates spice can now enjoy it. This was my first time trying the tots and how fun! I got the fish flakes on the side because I wasn't sure how well they would work, but I ended up dipping into them and really enjoyed it. I don't know if I could've handled the fill bowl on top but it was a fun twist to tater tots. We got there as soon as they opened and people started trickling in, it was a nice low-lit ambience and an open-kitchen concept. Now I look forward to visiting Portland just to have Fat Kitty again. read more

Fat Kitty is casual, cozy, and comforting like your favorite hoodie in restaurant form. The restaurants atmosphere was cool and welcoming. The broth was flavorful, the meat was hearty, and the noodles were tasty. This place was an overall win. I came with an appetite, and end up getting 4 dishes. I started with the Okonomiyaki Tots. Just regular tater tots but looked like they were alive, watch the video I posted. It was interesting but cool haha. Also got the potstickers, they were fried and had crispy edge and went well with the homemade sauce they provide. I got the spicy red miso with an extra serving of noodles. It was about a 5 out 10 on the spice level, I'm sure anybody can handle it. My favorite part was the soft poached egg. My friend got the vegetable curry, with a serving of pork belly. I would say hers was better than mine. From our point of view it was creamier than mine. The customer service here was spectacular. Our waitress Emma, was on it with her service. She was patient with us as we studied the menu, and recommended things to try. She also was very attentive and made sure we were enjoying ourselves and the food. I hope you get lucky enough to get her. Parking was rough but what can you do. If you're going into the city this is what you get. Don't let that deter you from going to try this place. Very impressed with this restaurant, they got a lot of things right! The restaurant itself was beautiful and clean, staff were very attentive and accommodating, and the food was delicious. We tried the spicy ramen and were pleasantly surprised. The noodles were tender, the egg was perfectly runny, there was a generous amount of meat, but most of all the broth was one of the best spicy versions I've had in Portland. Supposedly this is the successor to Boxer Ramen, my wife's favorite ramen joint in PDX. Sadly, according to the expert (her), it's just not the same. My wife was practically addicted to the Spicy Miso ramen, but upon ordering it from this new iteration in the same location, she left sadly disappointed. The broth, the heat level, and the flavor all were bland and underwhelming; additionally, the soft boiled egg was hardly boiled at all, and more of a soupy mess. It was difficult for her to put a pin on what was different, but her determination was that the mix had been altered, and the overall quality had taken a dive. Perhaps this was a one-off incident, but it definitely soured her on her once-favorite brand. And with culinary competitors like Akasaru Ramen just down the street, nipping at their heels, this Fat Kitty had better learn to start running, or it'll end up a dead-end alley cat. read more

If you were like me and mourn the loss of Boxer Ramen and its incredible flavor, the best news in the world is IT'S BACK! No longer owned by the previous person, this is all of the greats back with their own shop and in such a decadent location. It was such a pleasure to tell them I revered the Veggie Curry as my all time favorite ramen ever. When I heard it was back, I returned at least 3 times that month to reintroduce friends who also loved Boxer. The menu is exactly the way we left it, and that includes the Yuzu sake too. Okonamayaki Tots are incredible, and eases you in nicely before taking on the greatest entre of all time, the veggie curry ramen. Mushroom, the headiest brother, and even corn make for such a damn fine gift to mankind, I honestly can't get enough. The prices are great too, you get enough to be fully satisfied after the meal. The service is really nice here and they appreciate that we stayed fans even after the Boxer closures. It's so great to have this place back. read more

went around 430 on sunday. was pretty empty which was surprising. the restaurant is clean (didn't go to the restroom so can't speak on that). the server was prompt to take our order and pleasant. portions were generous. the rice bowl has a lot of options from protein to toppings and sauce/dressing. their passion fruit lemonade was fantastic ! the menu is pretty small though so might not serve well for picky eaters. there are two vegetarian ramen options. only con was the spicy edamame wasn't very spicy. great area to walk around as well ! read more

I visited Fat Kitty Ramen for dinner recently. There was about a 20 minute wait and the restaurant was busy. The service was friendly but harried due to it being busy. I got the spicy red miso ramen and shared the salted edamame with my boyfriend. The edamame were overly salted. The ramen had great noodles but the broth wasn't flavorful and the pork was just ok. I may give Fat Kitty a try again in the future but at this time, I don't recommend them. read more

This spot seems pretty popular because there can be a wait. The decor and vibe makes it a fun place, but the service felt a bit overwhelmed or maybe it can be described as laid back? It just didn't seem very friendly. The ramen itself looked good, except the soft egg. I had the Tonkotsu shio ramen and the broth was on the light side. The pork cha shu was on the crispy side but OK. I just couldn't get past the egg. The white was so soft it was wiggly. That's way too soft for me. I did enjoy the cucumber salad with avocado, very refreshing. read more

My friends and I are new to Portland so we didn't know where to have dinner until we saw Fat Kitty Ramen close by. We took a shot in the dark and went inside, they have a beautiful inside dining and outside seating on the side of the restaurant. We decided to sit outside and had an amazing waitress named Emma, she was so attentive, friendly, and incredibly welcoming. Due to some technical difficulties with their POS system, Emma was so graciously kind and comped our appetizers and the food was delicious! She even was sweet enough to give us more edamame for the wait, and we ordered two of their Tonkotsu Shio ramen. Hands down one of the best ramen I have ever had, the pork belly is bursting with flavor and the broth was incredible. We also ordered their chicken teriyaki bowl and the presentation was great, and tasted amazing. Thank you so much to Emma for being so generous and sweet! read more

I want my fat kitty! Hands down the best chicken teriyaki I've had in Portland to date. The veggie fritters, pot stickers, and tots (covered in seaweed and bonito flakes) were all amazing appetizers. We highly recommend the spicy red miso ...which lived up to its name. We've been there twice, and have yet to take a picture of the food because we snarfed it down!!!! If you've been to the Boxer ramen that was here before, it is the exact same menu/quality ramen, & they got rid of all their "sushi" options. They have the Tonkotsu, Spicy Miso, veggie curry & 1 other flavor of ramen. The tonkotsu was a bit below average. Not very deep or rich broth and the chashu was also unexceptional, crispy part was not crispy/charred enough & tender part wasn't tender enough. Akasaru ramen is right across the street & has better ramen IMO. The only thing that is nicer here is the ambience. read more

Went back another time. Not great ramen and now they are starting to do that thing Boxer Ramen did where they don't have an actual ramen egg but instead it's a a runny poached egg that tasted like wet dog. I don't understand why people in Portland like that. Still no bathrooms available. Service was great but we won't be back again for an $17 bowl of ramen with a runny egg. RIP read more

Yummy food, friendly service. I love the atmosphere here and good price for what you get. I always leave feeling full and nourished. The pork in the tonkastu is so tender and yummy, the okanami tots are so good. I would say try to come on the earlier side if you want dinner with friends because this place tends to get busy and has limited seating. Highly recommend. read more

Like many others, I went into mourning after boxer closed their doors, and after a long search for something comparable, this is as good as it gets. They've put their own peppery twist on the red miso, which isn't bad, but I wish they'd keep the original as a choice. read more

Ate at the Multnomah Village location. It's a small location but the food is well worth the wait! I had the Spicy Miso Ramen. It's the perfect ramen for a cold night. Also had the pan fried dumplings. The dipping sauce is not like a traditional sauce. It has a bit of a bite to it which I love. Pricing I would say $$. Parking can be a pain but the village has a lot of places so I'm not surprised. read more

Ota Tofu is one of my favorite spots in Portland for their amazingly fresh tofu, and it's right across from this ramen shop. Sadly, the tofu they used here was fried to a crisp, lost most of its flavor and had an unpleasant, sharp texture.

We got lucky and scored two seats at the bar and only waited about 15 minutes on a very busy Saturday evening. We've been to Fat Kitty four times now, and on each of our previous visits we really enjoyed the food. In fact, it was quickly becoming one of our favorite ramen spots in Portland. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was very different. Everything we ordered was extremely salty -- to the point where it was difficult to eat. We started with the pot stickers, which had a heavy coating of seasoning on the outside. It looked similar to Lawry's seasoning salt. When I mentioned it to our server, she explained that the coating is their house-made togarashi. I'm a big fan of togarashi, but this tasted quite different from what I'm used to. Rather than make a big deal of it, we decided to move on and looked forward to the ramen, which we've loved in the past. We both ordered our usual: the spicy miso ramen. Unfortunately, the broth was so salty that neither of us could finish it. It was really disappointing, especially since we've enjoyed this dish so much on previous visits. We mentioned this to our server because we genuinely wondered if something might have gone wrong in the kitchen that night. We explained that we're fans of the restaurant and that the ramen tasted much saltier than anything we had experienced there before. She assured us it was the same recipe they always use. I suggested that perhaps the seasoning blend used on the pot stickers might also have affected the ramen, but she didn't seem interested in passing the feedback along. When I asked if she might check with the kitchen or try the broth herself, she simply replied, "I'm good." Our bill came to about $75 with tip for pot stickers, two spicy miso ramens, a beer, and a Diet Coke. We truly hope this was just an off night, because we've really enjoyed Fat Kitty in the past. Their veggie curry w mushroom ramen is secretly made with magic. I usually skip veggie ramen because it never hits the same as something that has meat in it, but this one is honestly one of my favorites. Rich, comforting, and so homey. The waiting area to be seated is very small, I've come here mostly on a busy night and it does take a minute to get seated but they're very quick so just be patient. The restaurant offers a wide variety of Vietnamese dishes and drinks, with some fun surprises not found at other restaurants in Portland. (I ordered a boiled egg with my pho, which was a first for me!) The restuarant offers several soup options: Vietnamese pho with thinly sliced steak, brisket and meatballs, as well as Tom Yum Pho, and a dish called Trifecta (Chicken, udon noodles, with brisket and shrimp). I ordered the Vietnamese pho. The broth was piping hot, wasn't overly fatty, the noodles had just a slight bite to them, and the dish was very meaty. There was a nice selection of fresh aromatics, and their chili oil was delicious! I very much enjoyed this dish! I'll definitely be returning with my pugs this summer. I've also ordered takeout many times before, and enjoyed the yellow curry pho with rice noodles and tofu at home I am vegetarian and it was easy to take friends here with all types of dietary restrictions and all find something that we loved. Right in Kenton, a solid Thai spot where I see a lot of carryout happening. I got food to go once…read morebefore, but sat down recently. It was only one staff member, but he made it all happen fast. The space is bright and open. We split egg rolls, which were okay. The prawn dumplings were the standout - amazing with the onions and sauce. Our pad ka prow with chicken was tasty - the egg on the rice was unusual to me - but loved it!
