We went to the District for a late movie showing. The film ends around 9:30PM. We check around for food. Korean: closed. Japanese: closed. Thai: closed. American: closed. There's only one restaurant with the light on. THIS very store. We went in and time jump ahead for 50 years. You get a bowl, and then get to the open fridge to get any ingredients you like. And by any, I mean anything. Vermicelli, instant noodle, egg noodle... Tofu, tofu skin, bean curd, mushroom, 7 differeny vegetables... Fish ball, meat ball, imitation crab, beef, pork... Even the exotic one: quail egg, duck blood, beef intestine, tripe... We get a bowl full, and it costs $13/lbs ingredient. Then we pick a soup base and a cook will make it hot, fast, and delicious for us. Our meal costs around $18 and it's plenty for two for a late night meal. The arbutus juice is a nice extra: natural and not too sweet. In an area where every store is closed by 9PM, this restaurant stays open until 23:59PM. It's my first time writing a review on Yelp. I am a hotpot lover and is extremely picking with the hotpot places. I wasn't expecting much when my 6 year-old asked to try this place. This place really surprised with me their broth and freshness of their food. They have a wide range of broth options from spicy Mala, tomato (perfect for kids but you can also add spicy), Thai, Indian curry and more. You can adjust your level from non-spicy to spicy. The way it works is you will get a bowl and grab the food and veggies that you need. Then put it on their scale for the cost ($12.99 per pound). They will charge $0.99 for the broth you pick and will cook everything for you at the back. Tips: Don't fill up the whole bowl unless you are super hungry. Also they have a really good variety for broths and then they cook it for you and it's ready very fast! Just like the name. Warning: You maybe forced to pay a tip upfront. Expect bare minimum service and unfriendly staff. I believe my tip is my evaluation of a waiter's service. I will happily tip my waiter after I finished my meal. However, at this business, customers pay tip upfront. Because no one has served me yet, I tapped skip, The staff points out that the tip is "not optional" and insisted that I pay. When I reluctantly paid the tip, the staff gives me a really uncomfortable stare. The service is bare minimum. A very good hot pot and spicy dry pot (gang guo) place! This is a small local business and I wanted to write a review because it doesn't get much attention but it's a hidden gem. Please come here and support this small business! Ingredient selection is in the front, and food is charged based on pounds of ingredients. You can pick exactly what you want in the pot, and they cook it for you very fast (less than 10 minutes for me, they were done by the time I finished picking sauces). There's a very large selection of hot pot ingredients and sauces, and they cook all the ingredients a perfect amount. You can pick out of several flavors how you want it cooked, and the finished product is delicious! Would def recommend esp since they could use more attention - there won't be a wait! read more

It sells a Chinese cuisine called Malatang, which is like a simplified hotpot. Pros: One of the most authentic Malatang in US. Choosing food you like freely and paying by weight is the most common in Chinese Malatang, and it's the only restaurant I found in US that uses this way. You can choose from a variety of soup base. All of these are great and worth trying. Cons: Not really good service. The owner of this restaurant don't speak English. If you don't speak Chinese please always try to find the young guy in the restaurant, he will be able to help you. Also, sometimes it requires tipping, while there's actually mostly no service worth tipping. I really like the food. However I have to deduct one star for the service. I will still come here for the food, but customer's experience could be better. read more

I really wanted to like this place as I am a hot pot fan and love to see more convenient Chinese places in this part of OC. But, unfortunately, I have to give this place a big thumbs down. My wife is a vegetarian and ordered the tomato based broth option (which was the only non-meat based broth based on what we were told by the cashier/server). She ordered all vegetables and ate a portion of the individual hot pot serving (they prepare it for you in the kitchen, rather than letting you do it yourself at your table) before discovering a piece of meat in the broth. Now we are at home and she's got a raging case of the runs (拉肚子, for those in the know). This leads us to two possible conclusions: 1. A piece of meat accidentally fell in the broth. 2. They recycle their broth (which many unscrupulous hot pot places do back in China). Given that my wife pretty much never suffers from this kind of stomach ailment, I can only assume the latter. This issue, plus the mystifyingly snooty attitude of the lady at the counter guarantees we will never visit the place again. Be forewarned. read more

My boyfriend and I are regulars here and love the mala dry pot. The service is fast and everyone who works there is so sweet. We always leave full and happy. I wish we knew the names of everyone in the restaurant so we can thank them properly in this review. I noticed reviews complaining about paying and tipping before eating but more restaurants have been doing that in OC/LA. If you're one of those people complaining about having to pay the bare minimum tip service before eating then you probably never tip waiters in the first place. I personally like paying before eating so once I'm done, I don't have to wait for the bill. I can just leave and go to my next destination. The food here always hits and is one of my top dry pot places. To me, hot pot and gan guo places don't have much to complain about. If the meat is good and the sauce is good, then my stomach is good. I would recommend this place if you're in OC and are new to dry pot. There's a bar with all the meat and veggie ingredients. You'll just fill a bowl up with whatever you want and they'll weigh it and charge you based on weight. You'll get to choose what kind of sauce you'd like to cook your ingredients in and how spicy you want it. read more

MaLa Tang, a wonderful dish from mainland China that, at Fast Hot Pot, unfortunately comes with mainland Chinese standards of cleanliness as well. Another review makes claim that this restaurant could have so much potential, and it really could; there is not another acceptable MaLa Tang restaurant in the area. However, we just can't come back. Maybe half of the ingredients in the communal serve yourself area were unusable due to severe freezer burn. Some of the items were freezer burned so badly, in fact, that they were visibly dehydrated, discolored, and almost certainly inedible. Given how Fast Hot Pot is primarily a MaLa Tang restaurant, it reflects strongly on their business if the "face" of the business is rotten or freezer burned. read more

I have been here plenty of times , and not once was I welcomed or felt comfortable in this place .First off I want to start by saying that the food here is delicious, but the staff here is completely racist and makes you feel super uncomfortable, the older gentleman in the front is a complete sweetheart but the cook in the back and the lady in the front are monsters. One time I went there it was busy I am a single diner, so they told me that they were going to close for lunch but yet they were still serving people after me for dine-in. It was a busy time I could tell they were saving the tables for bigger parties since the place is so small. It made me feel super uncomfortable to be lied to in that manner. Again I tried it one more time ,giving them another chance and sure enough when I walked into the restaurant I could tell the cook was saying something to the lady in the front and she just gave me her back and a real mean snark. My first experience with create your own hot pot was at YinTang Spicy Hot Pot in San Diego. This place is similar. The broth is very good. A lot of toppings to choose from and the price is reasonable. You should be able to enjoy a nice meal for under $15. The lady boss is very nice. I came this afternoon and there wasn't many people.
