Celebrated some family on Sunday night with Farmer Brown's Steak House !!!! This was my first visit (cue everyone asking "how???" I know I know). I'm always down for a steakhouse, and Farmer Brown's has all the old school, classic vibes that I & everyone love. We had a big party, so there was just a slight wait, but we were able to grab tables in the bar & get drinks until our table was ready. Zach got a Pint 9 beer, and I got a blueberry mule. Their cocktail list was extensive which I always LOVE. Great service in the bar area carried over to our actual dining experience. Quick, kind, & friendly. We got some appetizers to start: stuffed jumbo tots (my fav), onion rings, & steak egg rolls. Zach got the club steak dinner, a 10oz sirloin, with green beans & garlic mashed potatoes (a FAV side). I haven't been to Farmer Browns in years! It has always been good I just never get out that way to go to it. Went there last month and it was the same as I remember! Delicious food, very good service and the decor that makes you feel comfortable! I ordered the Prime Rib, medium rare. It was so flavorful and didn't have a lot of fat. I didn't care for the creamy horseradish, I just felt it wasn't very flavorful. But all the sides you get fills you up, fresh rolls, side of spaghetti (there's a different option), and hashbrowns (choice of potato). We will definitely be back, just make sure you get there early they open the doors at 5 and there was a line standing outside at 4:30 and they don't take reservations. read more

I went to Farmer Brown's at the request of a family member. I hadn't been in probably 15 years, but it really hasn't changed much at all. I was expecting a down home steakhouse from a bygone era and that's exactly what I got... vinyl tablecloths and all. They don't take reservations, and when we arrive shortly after 5 PM, there was a very long line already. So we didn't get seated in the first wave, and had to wait almost 2 hours for a table. This is to be expected because it's the most popular restaurant in the area, but when they announced tables over the intercom, it was very hard to hear in the restaurant because there was such a large group of people waiting to be seated, that it was quite loud. I would recommend collecting phone numbers from people so you could call or text them instead of making a loudspeaker announcement which is hard to hear. The high points of the meal were definitely the meats... Most people in our group enjoy their steaks or prime rib. The kids meal fried shrimp was actually a bright spot and surpassed expectations. One thing that's odd is that when you order a main dish like a steak or a prime rib, you get a choice of salad, a choice of a potato side, and also a choice between a small side of spaghetti or green beans... That was a little odd to me. And don't order the spaghetti, it is truly terrible. The sauce literally tastes like ketchup with ground beef in it. Glad we went because it was definitely something different, but it's not somewhere that I will probably go back to for some time. read more

Simply WOW!!! We had a great last meal while visiting Nebraska this last weekend. We were staying in nearby Schuyler and we wanted to do a road trip on our last day. Four gentlemen in Clarkson said we had to come to Farmer Brown's and it was that good. Our server, Natalie was tremendous. Her timing and her personality was perfect. The hostess, Payton, (sp?) was also quite friendly and remembered us and told Natalie that we were visiting Nebraska from Oregon. Our daughter had the Chicken Fried Steak, my wife had an assortment of sides since she is vegetarian. All were great. But that Prime Rib...it is the best I have ever had. It had so much flavor and seasoning that it was hard to wrap some of it for left overs. It was also extremely good two days later, after being wrapped in ice and on a plane. All around- best steak house! Their old fashioned atmosphere is a perfect pairing with their deliciously cooked steaks. They're cooked perfect every time and masterfully seasoned. I recently had the pleasure of reconnecting with some of my former coworkers, and we decided to meet up at Farmer's, an old-school steakhouse they frequent monthly. They do not take reservations but once you put in your name head to the lounge and take a seat. They make stiff drinks, which I do appreciate. The service was amazing! I typically get a filet or prime rib. I decided to get the filet and it was so tender and juicy. I'm a meat and potatoes gal so I had to go with the mashed potatoes, also incredible. This place was just cool. In small town Nebraska. We went on a Sunday evening and the crowd was still fairly large. Atmosphere on point. As far as dress went, it was VERY mixed amongst the crowd. Anyhow, my group ordered a couple of appetizers. Combo plate and Roast Egg Rolls. The combo plate was decent and the roast egg rolls were very mid. Nothing to really right home about on the apps we had. Most everyone ordered a prime rib...which all looked excellent by the way. I, being the black sheep, ordered a porterhouse steak. It was really good! Steak was cooked right(medium rare of course). My loaded baked potato was up to par, as were the green beans. Before I forget...the drinks here were legit. I've been coming out to Farmer Browns since I was a kid, and I remember it being a very special occasion place. It's dark and cozy, and feels like a real family run business. Im glad theyve been around so long as it's definitely earned a nostalgic badge in my book. My most recent experience was with them at Junkstock. We got the steak sandwich and oh em gaahh it was so good. The bread was moist and chewy, despite the heat it wasn't dried out. The meat was incredible! The au ju to dip it was such a nice complement. So first off to say, the reason that I'm not giving a 1 star review is because I've been here before and it was phenomenal, but this time sucked so much that I cannot in good conscious give it a higher star. Me and my mom were in previously and had an amazing time, but when we went in today, we were told it was going to be an hour wait, with no explanation whatsoever even WITH the tables being only about 1/4 full. We left and I then called to place a reservation, because that's the only reason that makes sense as to why it would be an hour wait with no explanation whatsoever even, but I was then told that they don't do reservations and that its first come first served. The person who answered the phone was very rude and hung up in the middle of me asking why they had such a long wait. I had not known Farmer Brown's is open for lunch from 11 to 2 weekdays and Saturdays. What a great realization! Early in the week, I had a Reuben sandwich and side salad with their homemade blue cheese dressing; very good and then I went back on Thursday for their special of the day, chicken fried chicken. Over the top good!! Made in house chicken Patty with homemade mashed potatoes and gravy delicious and a vegetable. I took half of it home for dinner. I can't wait to do a Wednesday lunch when their burgers are the featured noon special. Born and raised in Nebraska. It's almost unbelievable that I am plant-based about 95% of the time. When I let myself out of plant, jail, prime rib is one of my all-time favorites. The prices are reasonable, especially considering the quality and portions of food. This is not a fancy place, but it's a staple in the area. Farmer Brown's Steakhouse in Waterloo is a diamond in the rough. The wife and I had a great New Years dinner at this resturaunt and found the portions sizes and food quality to be top notch. We both selected the farmer's cut of prime rib, thinking that it was the best value since the daughter's cut at 16 ounces of meat for $31, which all meals includes a choice of potato, salad and side of veggies or spaghetti, was 6 ounces less than the farmers cut at 22 ounces, but was only a difference of $3. All I can say is Wow.... That was a lot of prime rib for the money, and the salad was great, the potatoes, we had the garlic mashed, were great and the sides, fresh green beans or spaghetti, were great too (wife selected the green beans and I chose the spaghetti). All in all, for prime rib, it was definitely worth the money... Neither of us could finish our meal and took the left overs home, which we ate for dinner the following night.... And yes there s enough left over for an entire second meal. We have determined that third will be our prime rib go to location from now on. What's more, if your really want a huge portion of prime rib, they have the hired hand cut for $46 and it is 38 ounces of meat.... We cruelly saw this cut at another table and it looked to be a good 6 inches thick. Incredible! I was in the party room with friends, so I listened to the remarks about the food. "Excellent" was their most used word to describe their dinners. The bar continues to make the best and largest old fashion in the area. It deserves 5 stars for that alone. The salad is always refreshing. The dinner rolls were a treat over just plain bread. Love their spaghetti side it has a very good sauce. I had a petite filet with brandy peppercorn sauce. The filet was dry and tasteless. The peppercorn sauce was a waste of money. It did not taste peppery, it was watery instead of a rich creamy, thick sauce. My wife had grilled walleye. It was dry and over cooked. The waitress seemed to serve us as if she were in a hurry. This is my go-to for a filet mignon dinner! I ask for the Farmer Brown's house steak seasoning on my filet. It's delicious. And my medium rare filet is cooked to perfection. I ask for crispy hashbrowns and they come out perfect. The spaghetti sauce is a divine meat sauce. I use my bread to clean the bowl. I get the Roquefort dressing and blue cheese crumbles on my salad. Absolutely fantastic. Every server, including the cocktail server and bussers are super nice, friendly and efficient. If you have to wait, don't worry. Go to the lounge and enjoy a good martini.
