The Drover, a review: When you pull into the parking lot the outside of the place appears very unassuming. Once you walk-in, the modest decor gets even more humbling. It's a very old school, western, and rustic type of vibe. There's a sense of rugged individualism, resilience, and Western identity. Cowboys are a big part of the theme here, hence the brand name, The Drover. Various murals of impersonations of these vaqueros plaster the walls. The lounge area gives off old mafia movie feels, as you can picture how it could be filled with clouds of cigar smoke as mafioso Capos & soldiers belly-up to the dark bar sipping on their Scotch. Once the drinks start flowing and you get relaxed then the magic starts! You won't be disappointed in the Old Fashioned, or any other type of cocktail for that matter. The fresh baked bread comes out first with a significant portion of spread butter, which is absolutely delicious! Then you realize, that this place actually still has an old school salad bar. Like as soon as I seen the salad bar with all the fixings and the homemade Thousand Island dressing, I was hooked! Finding an open buffet style salad bar these days is as rare as finding a good woman who cooks and cleans. They're like unicorns. The Drover has several cuts of meat to select from. You honestly can't go wrong with the cut that you choose. They have seafood selections as well, just in case you want to get your Surf 'N Turf on. There's one thing that you can definitely say about this place, and that's the fact that it's a no-frills type of joint. They don't waste any time with any fluff. It's strictly meat & potatoes...literally. You won't find any bartenders here doing stupid bottle tricks and begging for clicks like they do out in Vegas. Instead you'll find Tony, who just keeps the glasses full with the concoctions that you wish to imbibe on. One of the female bartenders would fit right in at home in NYC as she drops an F-bomb or two. But, I'm no Karen, so I welcome the realness. She stated, "it's so fucking hot in here", as the bar fills up and the workers get slammed! Now onto the main course: I went with the 8oz Filet and the loaded baked potato. It was delicious! Simple, tasty, and loaded with flavor. They're famous for their secret "whiskey marinade" recipe. The baked potato comes out still wrapped in its foil, which will bring back memories of when your dad would cook them on an open flame charcoal grill. Did I mention the butter? I think I ate enough butter to kill a baby cow! And, I still couldn't get enough. Overall, this place is the epitome of Midwest Steakhouses. It gets right to the point and its customers will appreciate that! One guest told the bartender that he's not from Omaha, but every time he comes into town he comes directly to The Drover to eat dinner. He stated, "I've been coming here for 28 years". Later adding, "except for the years it was burnt down". Another female bartender quickly corrected him, "it was only shutdown for 9 months". Well, when your favorite restaurant is closed for any amount of time, "it felt like years", I added, as we all got a good laugh. As one old timer who came to sit at the bar said, "this is our favorite place". Well...old cowboy, I can see why. And, just like any Old Western movie, The Drover packs a serious punch. Pro tip: they open for dinner at 5:00pm, so get here early, unless you have Reservations of course. I got there at 4:55pm, no reservation, sat at the open bar, which is first come first serve and by 5:40 the place was packed! And, this was on a Wednesday. read more

Decided to return to The Drover for supper before a show, but The Drover drove me away. We arrived when they opened at 5. We both ordered the Whiskey Top Sirloin with the Whiskey Marinade with baked potato and salad bar. Includes Bread. The Bread came first and was warm. The bread is really good. The salad bar is decent. Ice berg and greens. I skipped the ice berg and went with the greens. Lots of basic toppings, but everything was fresh. The steak arrived. We both ordered medium to medium well with a light pink center. Mine came out less than rare and was raw in the center. My wife's was half correct and half rare. She kept it and ate the good part. I sent it back. Before sending it back it was very hard to cut the steak. When it came back it was charred and now it was like chewing shoe leather. The worse steak I have gotten at a restaurant. The first 3 tables had steaks sent back that we saw and another two tables sent steaks back. This is a problem with the cook. This is a steakhouse and having a cook who doesn't know how to prepare a steak is a serious problem. The waitress never came back and the service was terrible. Just opened up for the evening and not warm and friendly. I had a show to go to and was not sending it back again and based on the experience so far I wouldn't want to send it back. I won't return due to the service. The wait staff saw and knew how many steaks were being returned. That would be a huge red flag to involve management. They didn't do anything to make it right and we had a show to catch. I was disappointed by my Steak experience at the Drover. I came with a group and we were able to be accommodated last minute which was great and appreciated. I was told this restaurant had one of the best Steaks in Omaha so my expectation were high. I ordered the Whiskey Ribeye with broccoli and soup. The soup of that day was baked potato and honestly pretty good. A little heavy for a starter but it was flavorful and a nice starter. As for the steak, I ordered it medium, but when it initially came out it, it was way undercooked and very rare. I stopped in as I was driving through Omaha on I-80 on my way back to Oregon. I ordered a whiskey-marinated ribeye and it was flat-out delicious. The server/bartender upon putting the plate in front of me asked if I wanted steak sauce, and I declined (I generally like to taste the steak unadulterated by sauce); the steak did not need any sauce. I had a seat at the bar, and service was friendly and attentive. The bar and dining room was pretty full, with a number of patrons watching the Kentucky Derby, but the chatter indicated that most of them were regulars at The Drover (as opposed to people just dropping in to watch the Derby). On a trek across the country and found this steakhouse while looking through yelp for dinner recommendations in Omaha! After reading a little about what to expect, we decided to have dinner here and sure weren't disappointed! Our table ordered the Drover prime rib (to share for two of us) and another in the party had the evening special 12 ounce bone in filet. Each of the entrees comes with the salad bar which is standard-- nothing out of the ordinary. We had the prime rib prepared with the whisky sauce and it was so delicious, cooked to perfection. As a side, we had baked potatoes and the sautéed mushroom-- all were equally tasty. We were able to get a last minute reservation so we were seated immediately. A cocktail waitress stopped by soon after to get our drink order and then our waiter came by within the first 5 minutes to get our order. Water was refilled and we felt the amount of attention we had throughout the meal was appropriate. The restaurant is a little dimly lit, but overall a great steakhouse feel. For my soup, I got the Clam Chowder: not too hot, loaded with potatoes and less loaded on the clams. Drinks? The whiskey selection was indeed pretty good. They had bottles of Weller, EH Taylor, and Blanton's on the bar, which I am sure would impress a bourbon enthusiast. I personally would have liked to see some more craft options. It was packed, even on a Tuesday night, so I'd highly recommend a reservation. It was a touch loud, but we were seated by a large party. The service was great, but things were a little slow. As far as the food goes, that is where this place shines. The salad bar is simple, but knocks it out of the park. I loved the chilled plates! I had such high hopes for The Drover, but unfortunately, they fell short in many aspects. Arrival: I had a reservation. There was no host/ hostess stand or any staff around to ask. After wandering the full restaurant, I approached a server to ask where I could be seated for my reservation. Drinks: The server was unable to discern wine pairings or make adequate recommendations. She suggested ones that she said she heard were good. Service: I am gluten free (celiac disease). I informed my server of my gluten allergy. When ordering, I asked if my meal would be gluten free, she said she did not know, and that she has "issues with gluten and it was fine for [her]." She did not offer to check with the kitchen staff to find out whether or not something could be made gluten free. She recommended the fries and onion rings as sides, and I asked if they were gluten free, no cross contamination, and she confirmed this. When I asked if the fries shared a fryer with anything breaded, she said yes, the onion rings are breaded and not gluten free, and the fries were fried in the same fryer, meaning the onion rings nor fries were actually gluten free. I also asked if the house whiskey steak marinade was gluten free, and she said she did not know, but that she personally hadn't had issues having it herself. She did not offer to check or find out. I asked if it contained soy sauce, which has gluten, and she said that it did. Salad bar: The salad bar was bare minimum at best, with one lettuce base option, 6 toppings, and 6 dressings, along with crackers. No spinach. Toppings were spilled into other ones, and it did not seem sanitary. Very messy. Food: The food took a while to come out. My order was inaccurate; my side was not what I had ordered. She did not offer to have my correct side brought out, but instead offered another trip to the (pathetic) salad bar. The steak itself was extremely average, not much flavor. Environment: Very loud, bright, crowded, with several large groups with loud children running around. Not very relaxed or quiet. Overall, I am extremely disappointed with my overall experience in general: Arrival disorganized, with a wait time even with a late weeknight reservation and no staff present to seat me and no hostess stand or area. Server not knowledgeable about menu or offerings. Server not knowledgeable about food allergies, neglecting the possible severity, not offering to double check with the kitchen for when she was unsure. I ordered the Prime rib and the waiter asked if i wanted the Whiskey marinade. I should have asked what that entailed, my mistake, but I said yes. My prime rib was grilled, heavily, on both sides with cross patterns. It was too salty I could not eat it. Waiter never asked anyone at the table how the food was. The Drover is an Omaha institution, and it happens to be right next door to my office building so we have had many lunches there over the years! The ambiance is definitely old school steak house. It's pretty dim in there (I knocked my water over, it was so dim the first time I went LOL) It's very stuck in the 70s/cowboy style, and is sticking with that for better for worse. It's a little on the pricy side, but you do get what you're paying for. There was a fire at The Drover a few years back, and I was wondering if the rebuild would mean the style would be updated, but it definitely was not. Still old school, wagon wheel out front, Drover. The service is great with very attentive waitstaff who give recommendations and offer opinions on what you might like that day. They've never steered me wrong. I always get the Salad Bar as the side with my entree and it's a pretty good one. Small, but high quality offerings - and they have eggs, thousand island, and black olives, so that wins in my salad-bar book. For entrees, my favorites are the Teriyaki Tenderloin Skewers (if I'm in a lighter-feeling mood) and the Whiskey Grilled Prime Rib, if I'm wanting something heavier. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing light at The Drover, but there are degrees of heaviness to consider. I'm a huge fan of teriyaki anything, so the Teriyaki Tenderloin Skewers are right up my alley. The meat is just as tender as the prime rib, but in smaller bites. But trust me they are NOT too small. There are three humungous squares, grilled up with the teriyaki marinade and served over basmati rice (which is actually very flavorful, as rice goes). It also comes with a strip of grilled veggies (mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes), so if you're a fan of teriyaki, tender meat, and flame grilled veggies - this is for you. The Whiskey Grilled Prime Rib is gigantic - I have never been able to finish it in one go, so either bring your appetite or ask for a takeaway box. The Prime Rib is some of the best I've ever had in Omaha, very tender and cuts like butter. The whiskey marinade is just the added touch on top to give a little tangy flavor. Whatever you get at The Drover, it will be high quality and cooked to perfection. Wanted to stop by in Omaha as we drove cross country and saw many recommendations for steak, specifically the whiskey steaks at the Drover. It did not disappoint. We got the Whiskey Ribeye with asparagus and it was perfect. A nice sear on the outside with a perfectly soft center. Hint of whiskey in the flavor for a unique spin. There is a parking lot and plenty of street parking. We came later on a weekday night and were seated immediately but you may need reservations during busier hours. From order to the arrival of our food took maybe 20-30 minutes. While a little slow in the beginning, the staff were really accommodating when we had an order mixup and pretty attentive afterwards. The vibes are more old school/classic steakhouse but those dressed for all occasions are welcome. We saw parties nicely dressed, while personally we were casual as we had been driving all day. Despite this we were still accepted in to eat (a plus for us but seems like some posters expect everyone to be in their Sunday Best). We have had many dinners at the DROVER in past which was excellent. However, we (a group) went Sunday Night, 02/01/26 for starters the service was terrible, the food was awful, we had at our table sirloins, fillets, halibut, and ribeye's. Once our waiter took our order we never saw him again. No one came and asked how our meal was.....they were terrible. the halibut was a 2x2 piece of fillet that was overcooked and not good, the asparagus was tough and stringy! For $48 the halibut should be a halibut steak. The sirloin was so tough you could not even chew it. Then to top it off, one of our group members didn't get his meal until the rest of us were done! The salad bar was low on everything when we went through and many things were missing on the salad bar. Its sad that we will not be going back. This was suppose to be a fabulous steak house and we don't mind paying top dollar when it is excellent. DROVER you need to do better!! Who knew a three-year-old gift card could spark such a culinary adventure? Buried deep in our pockets (or memory), this little gem finally saw the light of day on Friday night as we headed to Omaha's iconic steakhouse, The Drover. Spoiler: It was a mixed bag of salad bars, whiskey filets, and a side of "meh." We arrived a few minutes before our 5:30 reservation, hoping for a smooth start. Parking? No problem. Getting seated? A whole different story. We stood awkwardly at the bar entrance, exchanging glances with other hungry parties as the host mysteriously disappeared. My 75-year-old dad nearly launched a one-man search party before the host reappeared and ushered us into a cozy little alcove. Cozy turned out to mean "crammed with wine-fueled conversations so loud we could barely hear each other," but hey, it's all part of the charm, right? Our server appeared to share the specials and promptly disappeared, leaving the cocktail server to take drink orders. Diet Coke for me (yes, it's a Coke establishment, for those tracking soda politics), but after that, hydration became a DIY affair. Water refills? Yes. Soda refills? A hard no. My glass sat empty most of the meal while the martini-table folks seemed to have unlimited service. The famed salad bar called, so we went to check it out. Chilled metal plates? Check. Crisp iceberg lettuce? Check. But then... oh no. Mushy, frozen cucumbers. Why, Drover, why? Other toppings hit the mark, and the poppyseed dressing was liquid gold, so all wasn't lost. A warm loaf of bread arrived, and we inhaled it. Sadly, that was our only loaf. Meanwhile, the martini table got refills like Oprah handing out cars. You get bread! You get bread! Us? Not so much. When the entrees arrived, things looked promising. My whiskey filet (butterflied, with sautéed mushrooms) was flawless--so tender it practically cut itself. The mushrooms had a surprising little kick that kept things interesting, though there were too many for me to finish. My husband's T-bone and onion rings hit all the right notes, but my dad's prime rib? Let's just say it wasn't winning any awards. Served medium rare, it was cold, and without the au jus, it would've been downright unappetizing. He wasn't thrilled with the meat but raved about his baked potato, calling it the best he's had in years. Small victories, I guess! Oh, and remember those little spiced apple garnishes they used to include? Gone. I missed them, just for nostalgia, but because my late grandpa would've eaten every single one, parsley and all. The quickest part of our night was the bill. Our total before the $100 gift card came to about $200, leaving $99 to pay out of pocket. Not terrible for three steak dinners at a classic spot. But was it worth it? Usually, I leave The Drover impressed, but this time, it felt like an off-night. Maybe it was the cold prime rib, the sad cucumbers, or the hit-or-miss service. Regardless, The Drover remains an Omaha institution, and I know it'll continue to draw its loyal crowd. As for me? I'll be back--eventually. I'm just not racing to beat you there. read more
