We were hungry and not sure who would be open at 8 pm on Labor Day. We took a chance on this place, tho we did call first just to make sure they were open. Didn't want to drive from Buena Park to find out they were closed after our taste buds were eager to try the food after reading the reviews. Happily they were open till 9:30 pm. Walked in and we were greeted by Isaiah, a friendly guy with nice smile. You order at the counter, then they bring your meal to you at the booth you've selected. I got the fried fish plate dinner. They offer mashed potatoes & veggies OR fries AND onion rings. Also served with delicious homemade tartar sauce. Served with your choice of a generous big bowl of "homemade" soup or a bowl overflowing with a dinner salad. And cornbread or roll. My husband had half of a broiled chicken. Choice of mashed potatoes & vegetables or onion rings WITH fries. Soup or salad and cornbread or dinner roll. PLUS choice of flour or corn tortillas. He thought the meal was terrific! The STAR of the night though was the CHICKEN & RICE SOUP Homemade and SUPERB. Probably the best bowl of soup I've had in a restaurant in at least 15-20 years. You could tell it was homemade without even tasting it, by the giveaways - the presence of bay leaves and the fact that the cut up vegetables in the soup were not all uniform in sizes. Definitely the hallmark of a homemade soup. I was so taken by the extraordinary taste of the soup; I asked who made it and if he was there. Juan came by our table where I had an opportunity to tell him just how fabulous the soup was. He has to be a Master of soup making because he has the magical touch. Friends, you SIMPLY MUST go and try Juanito's soup. Isaiah told us they list the days of the week and which soup is offered, on their website which is different than the one linked on Yelp. I told him that I love soup and I would be driving there in the winter, just to get Juanito's soup. It's magical Yes, it IS that good. Fantastic Cafe is an excellent good old-fashioned diner. Just like those that were around in Lakewood & surrounding areas when I grew up here locally. Clean, welcoming atmosphere serving generous sizes reasonably priced. The fact that the staff appears happy to be there, and takes pride in what they offer is very apparent and something which is sadly missing from many places today. My parents used to love this place. They'd drag us down there every weekend for breakfast if they could. At Christmas my mom would bring boxes of Sees Candy for the employees that they got to know. My parents have since passed away. So randomly I stopped in today and was blown away with all the MAGA Christian Nationalism decor! The atmosphere is very old school diner vibes. The service style is walk up and order get a number and choose your seat situation. This place was pretty busy when I arrived to meet a friend. We divided and conquered she ordered and I held our booth and we swapped... the food came out incredibly quick! The food was hot tasty and exactly as you'd expect from a French toast breakfast. They have fresh squeezed OJ as well and iced coffee... although I didn't try it today they have a fair amount of Mexican style breakfasts which is always a good choice (I'll be going back) overall this place doesn't have the glamorous bells and whistles but they have friendly staff and great food which in my opinion is the most important part. read more

First time back in years and I was surprised to see how much of the interior/exterior has been refitted with a ton of hybrid patriotic and evangelical christian decor. Even the front entrance has a mural of Jesus next to an American flag. At first I thought we were hearing Christian Rock radio over the soundsystem, but upon listening closer we realized it was a radio station for supporting families impacted by cancer. Everything else inside looks old and lived-in, like the budget to buy restaurant amenities like pepper shakers and seating upholstery was spent on a prayer cross-stitch instead and some flag decals instead. The service was quick & friendly and the food is the kind you look for in American diners. Lots of variety. Greek pita wraps, Mexican omelettes, southern-fried chicken & waffles. I have fond memories of crowding into this place with LBSU students after exams. Now it feels like this cafe has another purpose. I left feeling like there's probably someone battling cancer and the cafe has become a tribute to them. I hope my dollars support them in some way. Always passed by the spot when I exit on Studebaker and wondered if it was worth visiting. I can tell you that it most definitely was! The menu here is very large and they serve breakfast at any time of the day. I got myself a porckchop with some eggs. The whole plate was delicious and I knew it immediately when I first started eating. The service was great and the food came out fast. When I got home I realized that the kids chicken strips were overcooked and essentially chicken jerky, that was a bummer. It was a bummer when they mention that fountain drink refills were $0.59 e v en though the dispenser is customer facing. That's new, and quite unfortunate. Ambiance: The place is clean, it's well lit, and there's a lot of room and seating. Stopped by for breakfast after getting off from a 10 hour flight. My crew and I were craving pancakes. I went with small stack of pancakes and they were huge. I had hoped my 2 pieces of bacon would be crispier as I prefer. The scrambled eggs were good once I added some salt and pepper. You order your food at the cash register then you find your own seating. Some of the tables were dirty. So I made sure to wipe our table with antibacterial wipes. Our food came out within 10 mins. I ordered at the counter and my food was ready within five minutes. I ate the pastrami and it was delicious. Well constructed, good meat to bread ratio. On Mother's Day! What should have been a simple $2 kitchen error turned into one of the most hostile and unprofessional experiences my family has ever had at a local restaurant. My wife and I came in for breakfast with our daughter. After a mix-up with our order, I politely asked the order-taker for a $2.00 refund to my card for a breakfast burrito that was never served. Instead of just processing the simple refund, the employee decided to hurl personal insults at me in front of my daughter and mock me. Unbelievably, the situation peaked when this employee actually tried to provoke a physical altercation, stepping up and telling me, "Go ahead, let's go right now." Operating a local food and coffee business myself right here in Long Beach, I understand that ticket mistakes happen. What I cannot comprehend is employing volatile staff who actively try to fight customers over a two-dollar refund. I sent a formal email to management regarding this massive safety liability days ago and have received zero response, which shows a complete lack of accountability from the top down. We come here often and enjoy the junior burger basket special. I especially like the fries with extra seasoned salt. What they put on their fries isn't enough for my taste. Just my preference. In the evenings, there is an employee who I have asked kindly to give me extra season salt and he sprinkles a meager amount into a little dish. On our last visit, he denied me the extra salt. I took my mother to this establishment recently for evening rations. I had a steak sandwich. I ordered the steak medium but it wasn't pink like I expected perhaps because the steak was thin. French Fries were good. I saw a sign that drink refills incurred a charge of something like 75 cents if my memory is correct. I have an expectation that drink refills should be free, especially when self serve is used. As a result I am dinging this establishment a point. Men's washroom was clean but no paper towels were available so I am dinging this establishment one point. All the guys I saw working for this establishment were properly dressed with their shirts tucked in... good. I am glad this establishment has signs up promoting the Christian Faith. I tried this place today actually, and I like their other location in Cerritos, CA, but at this specific location in Long Beach the customer service is terrible, the cashier was rude and got my order wrong. I ordered chili cheese fries, and she just only put "chili fries". I wasn't bothered by the order being wrong, but I was bothered with the reaction I got when I told one of the servers the order was wrong. I told a server what I ordered and she just told me the other cashier said she did not charge me and just shrugged her shoulders, and she was seemed under the influence of a drug of some sort erratic behavior. After I told her about my order she brought me cheese in a little bowl, but she grabbed it with her bare hands, which was disgusiting, because she was cleaning tables and I watched her, she did not clean her hands, this was all in the span of 2 minutes. I didn't want to ask for a refund, I just felt like they would have given me a hard time, because of the way they treated me when I told them the order was incorrect, not only that the fries were old, and the meal was not enjoyable, and neither was the ambiance of the restaurant. This fantastic cafe is my favorite location, so I just had to come here for breakfast on the eve of my birthday! The Fantastic Cafe in Westminster is technically the closest Fantastic Cafe to me, but this location is worth the extra drive because their hash browns are perfectly seasoned! I used to like this place a lot more too because their portion sizes used to be larger than their competitors, especially when talking about their breakfast burritos, but the size of their breakfast burritos have shrunk, especially after they also raised their prices (not a good combination). Even with their recent food serving shrinkage, this place is still worth the extra drive because their food is perfectly seasoned so that it's a bit spicy. Because I usually drive out to this location, I usually call ahead of time and place my order over the phone. On this visit, I did that again and the lady over the phone who took my order, repeated my order back to me to verify that she got it correct (always appreciated when at least one of the orders is modified) and said it would be ready in ten minutes. When I got here, I paid for my order and my food was promptly ready after that- that's my kind of service, on time as estimated and tasty food! This place has a very large menu with lots of options and I can say that everything I've ordered (over the years, it's been about 15 different things), have all been perfectly seasoned and tasty. The inside of the restaurant is pretty large with multiple booths and tables so that large groups, family's and individuals can all be accommodated. There's also some cement picnic tables out in front of the restaurant where you could also enjoy your meal. If you're looking for delicious American food in the LBC by studebaker, look no further.
