I bought a high end Canadian Parka to get prepared for the winter months. With me being on the shorter end of the human height chart, I needed to take off 2.5" off the bottom of my parka so I didn't look too clumsy and comical In an oversized jacket (Canadians are tall apparently). The jacket is not cheap so I was a little hesitant at first with Ms. Betty, even after seeing her highly rated reviews. I thought "She can't be that good, can she?" Well, I was wrong. Her execution was on point. The jacket looks like it came out of the factory without any alterations. I gave her ample time and she provided a product in return that met my expectations. If the results of a complicated, goose filled jacket were exceptionally satisfactory, I am sure she can do and a hem, taper and trim in a timely and efficient manner. I actually came here again recently, but to have my own wedding dress altered. There wasn't much that need to be altered this time, but it was still done in less than a week. My shoulder strap was altered to fit better and I had a way to bustle my dress added. The bustle button was hidden perfectly under the back zipper and she prepared a decorative hook that matched the beading on my dress so that you couldn't even tell that it was there. This business lost mine before I could even get to the service counter. I came in to get a bridesmaids dress altered after reading the near perfect reviews and encountered a young woman who stopped in apparently to get the same exact bridesmaids dress altered. It appeared that she had been here before to get it altered for the wedding she was in but then came back to get it re-altered to be able to wear it at another event. The shop owner (Betty I'm presuming) was working with another customer as well so I sat and waited to be serviced. While doing so, I witnessed Betty address the other woman about her dress and the woman asked her why the straps she gave her (from the first alteration) seemed to differ from the straps that originally came with the dress. I'm not sure if things got heated quickly because of a language barrier or not, but the young woman kept her composure and tried to explain to her what her issue was, but Betty got increasingly agitated and spoke to her in what I felt was a rude manner and then became dismissive. I think the confusion could have been cleared up if the shop owner took the time to listen and remained calm. Needless to say, that was all I needed to see. No customer should be treated that way especially when the young woman was only trying to ask a question and calmly explain why she had her concern. On top of that, she was rude to her in front of another customer and would-be customer. Thanks but no thanks. I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

After reading the many positive reviews on Yelp, I brought some items to Betty for alterations this summer. I was about to move and start a new job and wanted to get 2 suit jackets, a skirt and dress pants altered before I left Richmond. Betty had me try on each piece, took care when pinning to ask how I wanted the alterations to look, and discussed desired hem length. I also brought her a swimsuit a few days later that needed mending for a rip on one side. Betty completed all of these items in about 1 week, as promised. I am very happy with the items - they fit perfectly and flatter me, where they were boxy and bulky before her work. Betty was able to alter the jackets, even though one involved creating new seams to decrease the amount of peplum and the other was a double layer jacket and quite a thick material. She told me the prices when I dropped the items off, so there were no surprises at pick-up. She accepts cash as payment. I would recommend Betty to anyone in the Richmond area looking to have alterations done. read more

Popped into this tailor without knowing anything about the quality of work. Tailor was able to add lining to a leotard( for dance) in a 2 week period. Felt it was a tad bit pricey considering only the bottom was lined but will consider this company again for future needs. read more

Excellent service! I dropped off a jumpsuit that was too long and she charged me $20 to take off a few inches. I dropped it off on a Wednesday and it was ready by Saturday morning. She trimmed it exactly how I wanted it and I couldn't be anymore pleased. I can't wait to wear it this weekend to a wedding. I will definitely continue seeing her! read more

I recently got a bridesmaid dress tailored here. I only had to get it taken up because it was too long. Overall, the quality of the job was good. However, I did not have a good experience. When I brought in the dress to try on, she never even asked me what style shoes I would be wearing at the wedding. I had to volunteer that information. She asked no other questions, which left me feeling very uncomfortable about our interaction. Then on the receipt, she wrote cash only, despite the website advertising that she accepts credit card payments for anything over $20, which mine was. When I came to pick up the dress, she had tossed the tag and optional straps that came with my dress. She gave me fabric I could use as straps (that weren't even the same color as my dress!), but argued with me when I said the straps were supposed to have little hooks so you could actually attach it to the dress. She then told me I could go buy the hooks and sew them in myself, which defeats the entire purpose of selling the dress with straps. She also proceeded to tell me that no one actually wants straps, even though I said I did. She was unapologetic and had no solutions to offer me even though she tossed them. She also kept insisting that I was getting a really good deal on the alterations, like that was supposed to make it all better. By the way, she charged me $50 when a tailor in the West End only wanted $60. That's not a crazy difference to make it an amazing deal. Overall, I had a bad experience and I don't know if I would come back. You could probably find the same quality of work elsewhere without feeling nervous that your clothes would be messed up or something would be lost. By the way, when I asked, she accepted my credit card despite the receipt saying cash only. read more

I needed a bridesmaid dress altered for a wedding. The date of the wedding was approaching fast and the dress had just arrived in the store. I searched the internet for alteration stores in my area and found Fancy Tailors. I chose this business because it had great reviews. I was optimistic on the first visit because it was cheaper than I thought and she would have it done a week before the wedding. When I went to pick up the dress it wasn't quite right. She had brought the dress in on the sides under the arm, at the neckline and the straps (the dress had a v-neck, lace overlay bodice with a short chiffon skirt). There was a pucker where she brought it in at the neckline. She told me she would have to put a seam down the front. I was not happy about this because I was afraid it would change the look of the dress. She told me to come back the next day. When I came back the seam didn't look too bad but I still wasn't happy it was there and it was noticeable. However, I had trouble pulling up the zipper and it felt a little snug. She said she took the belt in a little because it was loose. She helped me with the zipper and had trouble as well. She worked on it a bit and then got it up only to tell me that it was a bad zipper because it broke. She was then going to charge me for a new zipper and said to come back in two days (Tuesday and I was leaving for the wedding on Thursday morning). I came back and the zipper was ok but not a great quality of sewing. She tried to zip it again and it wouldn't go up because the dress was now too small. She told me it was because I gained weight. I did not gain that much weight in less than two days! If she was so experienced she should have known she brought the dress in when she switched out the zipper. Needless to say I was upset and anxious because I needed the dress the next day. I went back the next day and the dress fit but I did not give her any additional money for the mistakes she made, including the zipper. I would not recommend Fancy Tailors. Her sewing experience and the quality were lacking. The whole process was a nightmare and I will never go back. read more
