Hidden away on Main Street, Famous Doughnuts is tasty, affordable, and a different style of doughnut than the big rival, Paula's. They are more compact and smaller prizes, but just as a tasty and actually have a healthier attitude about them. When a Paula's item seems too much, Famous Doughnuts can make the difference and save the day. It is better than generic chains, by far, and has a great selection of all the classic styles. Nothing here is too sweet, too messy, or a hot mess - so this might actually be better for work place parties. I also don't tend to feel like I'm going to die after these doughnuts, though perhaps that's not for the best.... Personally, I like these better than Paula's. I went in later on a Saturday. Yes, they only make so many, so once sold out, it's gone. Got the square shape. Cinnamon flavor!! Delish! Not too heavy. I come here once every couple of months. Usually the selection is good, though they were out of most varieties one time I went. Typically, they have all the standard stuff: glazed, chocolate-topped, cream-filled etc. My husband doesn't like the peanut donuts because he says the peanut chunks aren't large enough. The store itself isn't much to look at, but the service is fast and the donuts are good. I particularly like the custard-filled ones that have the chocolate icing on top. It's definitely not Paula's, but if you live in the city and want a fresh local donut, this is a good spot -- especially now that Paula's moved out of Buffalo. read more

Usually go for a bavarian creme (?long john?), but have tried others and have been very satisfied. Different strokes for different folks. Different donuts for different grownups. Famous Donuts are nice, fluffy and have great flavors. They're very moist and have a great cake like texture. While they do have a limited amount of choices compared to other donut shops, they do have specialty donuts for different holidays and time of year. They often run out, so the best time to get a dozen is in the morning first thing when they open. I've used FD for some of our fundraisers. I called ahead and told them what I'd need and when I would pick them up. They'd have them all boxed up and ready for me, which was absolutely wonderful. They always helped me carry them to my car, which is so nice, especially when I'd order them in the winter. Because we were raising money, they'd charge me 6.50 per dozen ... Paula's are 12.50 a dozen. That's a major difference when you're trying to raise money and do not want to have to charge everyone an arm and a leg in order to make a profit. Yes, Paula's are much bigger than FD, which is why they charge more ... but when you're looking for a good quality, low price donut FD is the way to go. Many people are either Team Paula or Team Famous Donuts. I like both of them. I tend to go to whoever is closer to me when I'm craving a good donut. Is Famous Donuts out of this world? No. But they are definitely a great place that I recommend to anyone looking for a great deal and tasty snack. read more

I love this place.... I was craving their donuts before going work and I decided to stop by after some time off because it became an addiction. I always get the Cinnamon roll ones, it is just as good as it gets. Its glazeddd with cinnamon on the inside, the cinnamon is not strong at all. The donut is real soft, moist and nice ahhh is your mouth watery for it.... The service is real good, cashiers are really welcoming and approach customers with a smile. Hands down one of the best places to get donuts, especially for me, its fresh all the time. It's affordable and there many other choices to pick from, but I always go for the cinnamon roll one. I just went to Famous Doughnuts for the first time a couple of hours ago. I was actually expecting far less variety since Yelpers stated that batches are made and sell out early, therefore I was pleasantly surprised to find at least 8 varieties at ~4:30pm. Below are my comments on the four that I had: -plain: I am usually a big fan of plain/apple cider doughnuts. In terms of texture this one was in the middle, not too heavy and not too light. It wasn't very oily which was good but it wasn't as flavorful as other plain doughnuts I have had and was actually a little lemon-y tasting which I was not expecting and did not enjoy. Overall, disappointed. -custard filled (long one): pretty good. I am a fan of cream fillings so I usually go for boston cream/bavarian cream and this is their version of that. The filling was a little lighter than the aforementioned, which was fine and expected since the woman behind the counter said the filling was like pudding. The chocolate on top was not too thick either which I appreciated since I never care much for the chocolate glaze. Overall pretty good. -caramel covered: the flavor of the caramel topping was good. It was more like a thicker layer of caramel-flavored glaze than actual caramel since it had that sugar-grain consistency of glaze. As a whole it was a little sweet since it seems it had a layer of regular glaze and then had the caramel-flavored glaze layer on top of that. Overall, a little sweet. -glazed square: I usually don't like glazed but this was surprisingly good! The glaze was not too thick and the doughnut itself was so fluffy that it did not make for a dense overly-sweet treat like I feel other glazed doughnuts are. Overall, this was my favorite doughnut. Except for the plain doughnut, which the employee had stated was made from a different batter with a more cake-y consistency, their doughnuts are very fluffy/airy (think more Krispy Kreme's texture vs Dunkin' Donuts). They are good and a solid choice so I would recommend them. read more

This place has amazing soft glazed yeast donuts! I've been on a mission trying to find a good yeast donut in Buffalo ever since I moved up here. I grew up eating the Krispy Kreme chain fresh from the store only when the red light was on and flashing so you knew they were fresh from the oven but they are not in WNY. Famous Doughnuts has definitely filled that long standing void I've had. Their glazed doughnuts are a little bigger than what I'm used to but they are so warm and pillow soft with just the right amount of glaze that they melt in your mouth when you eat them. They are right up there in the high ranks with Krispy in my book if not maybe even better than Krispy. I could easily eat a dozen of the glazed just by myself. They are that good. I definitely recommend getting them first thing in the morning so they are warm and fresh. It's absolutely worth it. read more

Superior to Paula's, sorry they just are better. Not as many varieties or hip concoctions but what they do they do really well. The square glaze is my favorite. Ignore complaints about running out, they make them fresh in batches and once they are gone they are gone for awhile so choose something else or come back, that's just Famous. I appreciate the freshness and have myself come too late to grab a fave from time to time. These are awesome, not too sweet, fresh, fresh, fresh donuts. Glazed, cinnamon and custard are to me the must haves. Admittedly not a fan of their fry cake. Paula's is great, love them but much like the Anchor Bar they get all the hype but the best in Buffalo just keeps being the best without the fanfare. read more

I'm a "pile on the filling" kind of girl, and although Paula's has the most filling in their donuts I've ever had here, I still prefer Famous! Absolutely wonderful! I tried the glazed doughnuts.They were soft and not too dense. The glaze had the right amount of sweetness. I'm not big on sweets but I took one bite of that deliciously light dough with the melty sugar and before I knew it my hand was empty and reaching into my box for another. It's reasonably priced and everyone who worked there was so pleasant. Took home the rest to my family last night and the box is empty just a day later. If I could give more stars I would.
