The setting is beautiful. The building is an old ski lodge and has a beautiful large stone fireplace in the main dining room. The deck is huge and also fabulous for summer outdoor dining. There is variety of dishes and the food is delicious and fresh! BYO. The service was great! They had one cook and one server working the whole restaurant and they were on point and didn't miss a beat, but I'm sure they were exhausted. I had gotten a gift certificate to come here. After reading all the reviews, I was a bit skeptical. However, most of the reviews that were bad were from 6 years ago. We went, no reservation, and were seated right away. Being it was 4:30 in the afternoon it wasn't busy at all. The service was great, the timing of our food coming out was great, and our dinner was cooked to perfection. My husband had the filet mignon, I had the sea bass special. He also had the chicken noodle soup, and I had the crab cakes. Everything was delicious! The restaurant itself is very cozy and inviting. We will definitely go back again in the future! read more

I don't know where to start with this place. Or how to express how horrible the experience was here.... We drove an hour to come here for a birthday dinner. Let's start with the only good thing, the server was nice and friendly. The restaurant it self is cute, however when you start looking closely not the cleanest place, cobwebs and dust in all the corners but whatever. Now the food... horrible is too good of a word. Wife ordered the Scallops, she got 4 tiny, about the size of a quarter scallops, white rice which was unseasoned and tasted like mold, and green beans that were old and wilted and also unseasoned. I ordered the "cowboy cut" rib eye. First off this was not a cowboy cut which is usually a nice bone in steak, this was the worst quality steak I have ever eaten, I know ribeyes are usually fatty compared to other cuts, but there was no edible meat on this steak. Basic salt and pepper seasoning, nothing special, and the "whiskey butter" was completely flavorless. Came with garlic mashed potatoes that were also unseasoned and flavorless and the same old wilted green beans as my wife. Even the soda I ordered was flat. No choice of sides, you get what you get and most likely will get upset.... I've had better food sold out of the trunk of peoples cars and the audacity of the owners to call this "fine dining". Dollar general sells a better quality steak than this... Claimed they took 20% off the bill cause we didn't like the food but when we did the math, they took 20% off my steak and not the total bill. I dont understand how this place has such good reviews... What an absolute disgrace and disappointment. Do better... No wonder the place was empty , we should have taken that as a sign and just left than. Ended up at Arby's which was far better a choice than Fairview, also even the name is a lie, Fairview? View of what the abandoned house across the street? Stay away from this place. If you need any more convincing this place is garbage look up their health inspection report.... I cannot understand for the life of me, why Fairview only has 3 1/2 stars. If you'd like the sweetened condensed version of my review, here: Fairview is beautiful, their staff is always friendly and their food is delicious. If you'd like a more detailed version of this culinary adventure, continue on... I've found it extremely hard to get a good meal in this neck of the woods... Fairview is one of the very few places that always hits the spot. The decor is stunning (unless you're a diehard PETA alum... There are deceased animal heads all over the walls.). I have been here twice so far but my boss visits Fairview frequently and is always pleased. Our waitress is very attentive but not to the point of annoyance. She's as friendly as can be, just like every other staff member I've encountered. The food... THE FOOD... Well, it's tasty! I've never been disappointed with the menu. The chef uses fresh and unique ingredients. And my God, DO NOT leave there without trying the chocolate torte. I've only been there around lunch time, but from what I see the prices are quite reasonable! If you're looking for the dollar menu, move along.. If you're looking for a fine dining establishment that won't break your bank, Fairview. Okay, I think I covered everything.. These people have a lot of attitude and could use a little bit of humility. We ate there two nights in a row by happenstance so we got the double treatment. Usually when you go to a restaurant, you place your order. But here THEY give you orders. For example: a) they have one salad dressing (champagne strawberry vinagerette) for the salad that's included with your entree - if you don't like that option, it's oil and vinegar or TOUGH LUCK. They have three other dressings for "dinner" salads but that's not offered for the small side salad they give you for "free" b) there's ONLY rice for the "starch' despite the fact that the menu states there is a potato option. if you don't like rice, TOUGH luck. c) there's only one vegetable option which happened to be asparagus. You don't like asparagus or can't eat it for some reason, like one of the people in our party, it's TOUGH luck. And they give you all this with a lot of edge and attitude. And the place isn't cheap. The main courses are in the mid-$20s. We're not talking about trying to re-arrange an early bird special or anything like that. This is the standard way they operate. We're not going back to this place and recommend that others skip it. Then maybe these owners will begin to get the idea that they're in the service business and we can take our dollars elsewhere. The reviews of this restaurant certainly run the gamut from one star to five stars which clearly says something. My friends and I went here for dinner this past Sunday night. As for the food, I can't even give it a fair critique. Reason: WE WALKED OUT!!! Yes, for the first time in our collective, culinary experiences we (we were a table of 3) left right after the salad was served. Allow me to explain. We ordered two grilled caesar salads with a simple request: we wanted the two salads split 3 ways for us. The busgirl came out with two plates. The fact that the salad wasn't split means one of two things. Either the server forgot to notify the kitchen, or the kitchen refused to do it. If the latter was the case, then the server should have informed us of that. So when the busgirl came out with the two salads, the gentleman in my party alerted her that was not what we had requested. She responded quickly that "It's hard for the kitchen do that." He replied "No it isn't." Needless to say, she came out with a third plate for us to divvy it up ourselves, which was certainly not a problem. The server soon followed, my friend notified her about the comment the busgirl had made, and expressed he was dissatisfied. Seconds later, as we were splitting our salad, a woman came out (we're guessing the owner? She did not state who she was) and opened with this remark: "I will NOT have you talk to my staff that way." She asked if we had requested that the salad be split 3 ways to which my friend said yes. My friend also mentioned that all three of us work in the hospitality industry. She replied "Well then you should know not to make your complaint to a busgirl and to the server instead! A busgirl which happens to be my daughter!" Another person tried to explain that we weren't rude to her daughter but she was too fired up to hear what my friends were saying. She finished by repeating that we could not talk to her staff that way. At that point we had all had enough of being reprimanded, so we grabbed the wine we had brought with us and walked out. We were all shocked that this woman didn't attempt at all to resolve the problem, but instead chose to add fuel to the fire. Are you kidding me?! What ever happened to "the customer is always right"??? Also, what does it matter if the busgirl is her daughter? At that point the owner/manager went from business to personal and that is a no no. I'm assuming after visiting the website and reading other Yelp reviews that the woman who approached us was Bonnie Percevault. With as much experience as her resume states (courtesy of their website) I am surprised to have witnessed this kind of unprofessional and unacceptable behavior. If the busgirl (her daughter) hadn't made her remark or the owner/manager worked to resolve the problem there would not have been an issue at all. So once again, I cannot comment on the food (other than their rolls which were quite delicious). I'm giving one star since the service was horrendous as my story clearly shows. Im not surprised to have read other one star reviews that made reference to bad attitude and snarky service. One of my friends has a timeshare near by and has vowed never to return. read more

The building is beautiful and the food is typically very good. Unfortunately I got a bad meal on my last visit and the way it was handled turned me off and I won't be returning. I can deal with a bad meal if it is handled correctly but if service is defensive and rude I'm done. New owners this year. Completely restaurant not much general store. Still beautiful wrap around porch which I recommend eating on ! They open at noon and don't technically serve brunch. But they did have an omelet and one French toast entree on the menu. They also have tons of daily drag specials. We came for lunch / brunch. I had the mufelatta with salami, ham, provolone, olive salad on ciabatta roll. Served with delicious fries. It was perfect. Loved every bite. Quite a big size I only ate half. Bf got the French toast which was served with delicious sausage and home fries. Again a nice sized portion and very delicious. Served with fresh maple syrup . bf sister got the California wrap which she thoroughly enjoyed Desserts brownie sundae with fresh whip cream vanilla ice cream and caramel ganache. Very good although small portion. Sister got the pineapple bread pudding which was very tasty although light ob the pineapple. Its a BYOB with 2 dollar corkage fee. Live music Friday nights. Very friendly staff and great service UPDATE came back for dinner. Prices a bit steep especially for this area, but food again did not disappoint. I had the chicken delmonico with artichokes and mushrooms and it was delicious. Served with a whole grain rice. The boyfriend had the pork tenderloin with the raspberry sauce which he loved. This restaurant is open again and we went for Valentines Day dinner. The setting is so pretty, intimate and warm. I know it has gone through different owners in previous years and they all had their problems. But, this evening was a lovely surprise so I wanted to share it as NEPA desperately needs quality dining - or just good food places for that matter! The food was delicious. It was a set menu for the night so, normally I suppose it would different but, it was very very good. The service was very pleasant but, slow because there was only 1 person working the room. Rude!! My family and I had reservations from 5:30pm Saturday night. We arrive approximately ten minutes late because it was our first time going there and was unsure where it was. The place only had two other tables when we arrived. As we stood in the entrance waiting for our table, the hostess eventually greeted us. We told her we had reservations at 5:30, she looked at her book then said "Just to let you know we have a reservation at this table for 7:30". Now I don't know about you but that made us feel rushed. The place was dead and there was a dozen other tables in the establishment available. Personally who in the hospitality business treats guests like that. It didn't seem very welcoming. Lets get to the Food. For an appetizer I ordered the bake oysters. The hostess informed us that they're in season and fresh. When the oysters arrived mine were covered in melted cheese. As for someone that is a culinary student i've learned that cheese does not go with seafood. A bake dish should have breadcrumbs, bacon and scallions but not cheese. I had one that was hot and the others were warm but cool towards the bottom. It seems like they were made earlier and just ran under the broiler to warm them up before service. My cousins husband had "fresh shucked" oysters, from the taste the poor things were probably shucked yesterday. There was no salty taste (which is why people order them) and they were probably washed. The one good dish was my mothers escargot. That was pretty tasty. All the entries were sub-par. I had the lamb chop, ordered medium rare, more medium but i'll look past that but it's not difficult if you know what you're doing. My fathers NY Strip was a tough end cut that shouldn't of been served. While I don't remember what everyone had all I know that no one was raving about a particular dish. After dinner I asked to see the dessert menu, but they didn't have one in print, so I had to listen to the waitress list off eight dessert items in rapid fire. Personally I like to look at a menu and think about what I want and not have the waitress waiting for my response. I said i'll pass on the dessert but i'll have an espresso. Guess what. No espresso. Usually cafes equal espresso, not in this case. Cherry On Top We get the check, pay it and start to finish the rest of our wine. At around 7:20 another women, not the hostess, not our waitress, just some other girl that works there. She comes up to us and says " Is there anything else we can do for you this evening?". Uh no? Talk about the bum's rush. That was probably the hostess way of saying "hurry up and leave". There other five top wasn't even there yet and there were several other tables open. On the way out no one even said have a good night or any other pleasantries. When I started this review I gave it a two star rating, after reliving the experience I brought it down to a one. I will never go back to this place just because of the poor hospitality. If we were treated with respect I would probably give it another shot but not after the way that hostess treated us. This is in reference to Roland H's review and your subsequent reply. I happened to be one of the individuals at the table this past Sunday night. First of all, nobody said anything nasty to the busgirl. She snipped back once we requested the two grilled caesar salads to be split 3 ways. If it was impossible to be done, the waitress (not the busgirl) should have addressed it in the beginning. Yes, my friend did throw a little tantrum. All he said was that he was angry with the way the busgirl spoke to him. She was out of order. NO KNIFE WAS THROWN.In fact nothing was thrown. We don't know where Bonnie P got that from. As for the owner/manager, there was no reason for her to reprimand us in the fashion she did. We are mature adults and nobody is going to speak to us in that manner. In addition, my friend and I were there twice. There was no confrontation the first time, so I think Yelp needs to hear a third side to this story. The owner should have come to the table to rectify the situation, not to add to the situation. But of course we know it was her daughter who was the busgirl, so it became personal and that's unacceptable. Bonnie should know better from her experience. All dining experiences should be wonderful. From the minute you walk in to the minute you leave. In conclusion, the owner/manager should have listened to the two sides of the story but instead chose to side with the staff. Sorry Bonnie, you're wrong. A 1 rating is not based on the food or service. It is based on their response to my email criticizing their cork charge of $2 per person. I told them the food was pretty good an the service, excellent. I asked, why charge 2 people $4 and 4 people $8 for opening the same bottle of wine? I thought the cork charge petty and felt I was being penalized for their inability to get a liquor license. Well, their response was extremely defensive. "Our food is excellent, not very good", " We have to wash those wine glasses" (don't they wash the water glasses?), "We use nice cork screws". They also said "Our cork charge is on our website and menu". If you hunt for it on there web, you will eventually find it and when you see it on the menu, you are already there. The best part is they ended by saying "Goodbye". Nice PR touch. Sorry, if you cannot take criticism, you only get 1 star. read more

Had another great meal at the Fairview again! Dined for lunch about two weeks ago and went back to try their dinner menu. Sat next to the wrap around stone fireplace, which was very cozy. The cafe is BYO, we brought a bottle of wine with us that the hostess served & chilled for us. Had the tuna bites as an appetizer & they were perfectly seared! Dinner came with a small salad with a delish dressing, I had the bourbon street chicken, with a salsa on top that tasted from sweet to a little spicy. my friend had the filet mignon special with fresh mushrooms. Cooked perfectly medium. We skipped dessert because we were so stuffed but had a cup of what seemed to be gourmet coffee, very smooth. Will definitely be back with friends. read more

I went to Fairview Cafe for my Birthday dinner a few weeks ago. I found it by chance on a voyage to Promised Land State Park. The building is absolutely beautiful, which honestly was the reason I wanted to check it out. I didn't know anything about the establishment before visiting it, never saw any advertisements for it. Although there were a few hiccups/letdowns during our visit, the food is what truly set this place up for 4 stars. First, when I called I had to make a reservation b/c, as the hostess stated, they were booked up except for 2 slots - they get VERY busy on the weekends, you need to make reservations a week in advance. When I got there for my reservation, I was the only one there. No one else. When the host sat me at a table I had asked for a different table (he seated me by the kitchen doors) - he said they couldn't change my table b/c the others were reserved. Lookng around it was empty... kind of annoyed me a little but whatever. Mind you, the other guests didn't really start to arrive until about an hour and a half later (and the place still wasn't close to being FULL) I surely could have changed tables. Second, prepare for sticker shock - the pricing was definitely up there. For a small town and low income area in Northeastern PA, they were on the pricey side. Obviously catering to the Tourists from NY and NJ. Just about all the entrees on the menu were $18 or more. Considering the restaurant doesn't have a website, I wasn't prepared for the high prices. With these prices you expected the decor to be very nice too - the place has a Cabin-esque feel, with the woodwork and taxidermy all over and a huge stone fireplace. Very quaint. However, considering the prices on their menu and the look of the place, you would expect the staff to be dressed more appropriately. Not in jeans and sneakers. Third, the wait staff... although our waitress was obviously seasoned and knew about the food, the other staff was young and airheaded - we had to ask them multiple times for simple things like butter, and water. The other staff were a bunch of kids. They could surely use more training in serving their patrons and being 'in the moment' not in la-la-land. I believe the waitress we had was the chef's wife, which could account for her knowledge and professionalism. Last small suggestion, I indicated it was my birthday upon arrival. I was surprised not to rcv even a small little 'surprise' at the end of our meal. No, I definitely didn't expect singing and clapping as in restaurant chains... but a little gesture would have been nice. Oh well. (No, this little thing didn't sway my opinion of the establishment)., Now onto the good parts.... the food was outstanding. Considering the area, the seafood was very good and cooked well - the mussels melt in your mouth. Everything was favorful and seasoned perfectly. Kudos to the Chef! The food arrived quickly and hot. As I stated before, if the food was just 'Ehh' they would have never rcvd a good rating from me... the food sold us (which is what it should do). If they could work out the other kinks and get a website up and running - they would definitely get 5 stars from me. Lastly, we were there for a couple of hours and the staff in no way rushed us out the door, which was nice. I would definitely recommend Fairview Cafe to friends and family. The manager didn't seem too concerned when we complained about her employee. I didn't care for one their dishes but I didn't make a fuss, I just didn't eat it. I've eaten at the Fairview Lake Cafe several times over the last year+. It's a beautiful restaurant with a lot of charm - wonderful rustic dining room with a huge fireplace and great arts and crafts architectural detail. On previous visits, I felt that the food was just average. Tonight's dinner was outstanding! Both my husbands and my entrees were incredibly good. At least as good as the best meals I've had in & around Phila. (where I live). I had a grilled vegetable ravioli with amazing roasts fresh beets in the sauce. He had a New Orleans mixed seafood dish with roasted red pepper, spinach & creme sauce over rice (instead of pasta - to accommodate his need for gluten-free meal). Service also incredibly good. Not to mention the music!! The music tonight by local artists La Lava Jiango. A gypsy jazz duo who played a range of music with wonderful energy & skill. Totally enjoyable evening. Fantastic brunch for Mothers Day. Classy decor with dark mahogany wood throughout with high ceilings and magnificent lodge like fireplace in the center. Started with their berry teas and lemonade. Update: I just can't with this place; it is like the Amy's Baking Company of the Poconos. To clarify, we are fun people that love good food and great atmosphere. The couple Bonnie claims complained about us was very friendly. We chatted nicely with them talking about children when she came over and asked them if we were bothering them. I have in my notes (yep, it was so bad I wrote it all down the next day) the husband replied "No, not at all." We asked what TYPE/S of mushrooms were in the $24 mushroom pasta dish, not how many - that's just silly. A member of our party accidentally knocked over a giant chalkboard on his way back from the bathroom. The chalkboard with the menu items was leaning on a chair - easy target and he apologized to everyone. We were never offered a carafe for our wine. We did not have a reservation (that is correct) - just seeing if things would work out. My husband was trained as a chef at the same place their chef was trained. Our wait staff apologized to us profusely. We gave her $25 for her trouble. We offered to pay for the appetizers we had eaten only to be presented with the entire bill. We asked what the appetizers cost and never received an answer. Bonnie said "You were out to get us." I told her that we had eaten there before at lunch and, like so many people on this site have said, I had a great experience. So great in fact that I convinced three people to leave The Settler's Inn to try it out. These people will never take my word for anything again btw. I told Bonnie that we had been there and had liked it but she would not calm down. We really tried with this place. I invite you to read my other reviews -all positive. I work for an international firm and through my travel, I have been extremely fortunate to have eaten some renowned 5 star resturants coast to coast as well as great local mom and pop places. I love good food and I love being surrounded by great service and good people. I got NONE of that at Fairview. Orignal post: Last weekend, my party of four attempted to have dinner at Fairview Lake Cafe. Due to the performance and attitude of the owner we decided it in our best interest to leave the establishment mid appetizer. I have never in my life have been treated so terribly by anyone, much less the purveyor of a customer dependent business. I was embarrassed for the patrons, I was embarrassed for my dinner guests, I was embarrassed for the horrified wait staff but most of all I was embarrassed for the owner, Bonnie, whose disdain, condescension, and frenzied defense of a shellfish communicated through finger pointing, shouting and many other over the top theatrics ruined an evening for dozens of people. We visited the Fairview café on 6/12/16 for breakfast. There was a total of 8 people in the place when we arrived. We were seated at 9:43. We ordered are food which didn't arrive at our table until 10:48. Another couple arrived 30 minutes after us and a party of 8 people arrived 43 minutes after we did. The party of 8 was fed and leaving before we received our food and the other couple got their food the same time we did. When our food arrived EVERYTHING was COLD!!!! We explained to our waitress our concerns and asked to speak to the owner who WAS there seating people, the owner never came to the table to speak to us like she didn't care at all. We were told that they would remake our order as if we had all the time in the world. As we were leaving the owner finally spoke to us to say have a nice day. THAT'S ALL SHE SAID TO US!!! VERY POOR SERVICE AND NO CONCERNS ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS!!! NOT TO MENTION BREAKFEST WAS $30.00 WITHOUT TIP!!!! I will NEVER return to this place and wouldn't advise anyone to go there.
