We booked a room here on 4/19/24 as we were attending the open house at Ithaca College the next morning. There are several hotels in the area but this was the only one where we could find availability. Evidently they were aware of this and put a price gauging plan into place. My son and I stayed in a regular room, king bed, no frills for $470 for ONE night. I have stayed in NYC on a Friday night for half that cost! The hotel itself is completely average and in desperate need of a face lift. As we had no other choice we got stuck paying this ludicrous amount for an average hotel in the middle of a small town in NY State. The view from our room proved even more dismal (pictures attached). I'll refrain from even commenting on pooling, dirty water on roofs. Would absolutely NEVER stay at a Fairfield Inn again. In these trying times where everyone is living paycheck to paycheck and trying to feed their families, this business saw an opportunity to take advantage of guests and milk as much out of them as they could... and that's exactly what they did. Honestly a disgrace and a total waste or our hard earned money.

The staff ranged from a somewhat obnoxious person at the front desk (Tiara) to extremely helpful, friendly and polite manager of housekeeping (Jason). Nowhere on the website does it say this is a "dogs only" hotel. The pet policy listed on the website only states no more than two "pets" and that they must be less than 35 lbs (and medium in size). That's it. So imagine our horror when we arrived after a six-hour drive to be told we would not be allowed to go up to our room with our "pet" cockatiel. The manager, Tiara, argued that because it did not specifically say "birds allowed" that we didn't have an argument about the website only saying "pets". I call BS. Words mean things. Pets means pets. The hotel can have whatever restrictions they want, but making it a secret until after you pay, and pack the car, and drive six hours is an egregious failure. Not only was our entire party exhausted from the trip, but our bird was at his maximum stress level after (a) being in his travel cage all day, and (b) experiencing a frightening experience in the hotel's very poorly designed parking/unloading area out front that many others have mentioned in their reviews. He needed to go up to the room and sit on one of his humans to destress, pronto. I was extremely concerned that the additional stress of being loaded back into the car to basically be homeless for the night because we had NOWHERE ELSE TO GO (which I calmly explained to Tiara) would cause significant harm to him. Birds can die from stress. Tiara did not care. She apologized, which I calmly told her meant nothing to me if she was actively willing to harm our pet who is every much a part of our family as anyone's dog is. She said she was concerned about the comfort of other guests and possible noise. We were already checked in. We had our room keys. WE were guests. She did not care about our comfort. This felt like a bait and switch, like we had been defrauded into believing we were booking a pet friendly hotel, when in fact this hotel does not care about pets, or animals in general - "dogs only." Another manager came down. Other guests were noticing the situation. I distinctly heard one mutter, "Let the bird stay." And this is when the other manager explained the hotel's other Super Secret Pet Policy: that you must stay with your pet; it must never be left in the room alone. [This policy is only viewable to guests via a QR code that you can only access from INSIDE the room after checking in. And, again, it only said "pets".] Again, the hotel can have any policy it wants, but please, for the love of all that is good, MAKE IT PUBLIC. Maybe it was the potential for a chant to break out in the lobby: Let the bird stay. I don't know what changed, but finally the other manager, not Tiara, begrudgingly said they'd "make an exception" for us. Buddy, to say you're making an exception implies there was a rule to make an exception to. There was not. Then, of course, Tiara jumped in to make sure we had the worse time possible and informed us we would be KICKED OUT if there were complaints about our bird's noise. Birds communicate vocally. Our bird could exhaust a toddler once you get him going with playing peek-a-boo. He'll offer a cheerful "hello" when you walk in the room, or ask if he's a "good boy?" (yes, always). Sometimes he asks you to "come'ere." And ... sometimes he just likes to let it rip. He is a bird. Once we got up to the room we immediately started looking for another hotel, and there was nowhere else to go. I don't want to get into personal health issues of members of our party, but leaving the next day to drive back home was not really feasible. We had to stay. And it became very quickly obvious why they were concerned about noise. As other reviewers have pointed out, the walls of this hotel are appallingly thin. A short, incomplete list of noises we endured that were not caused by our bird: toilets flushing (not ours) Someone banging a drum outside dogs growling and fussing with each other entire conversations (Girl, talk to him, not your friends!) machine guns coming from the other room's TV a weird chirping sound coming from the vents someone apparently moving furniture in the room above us (?) me, screaming when the shower almost burned my skin off I will say the beds were very comfortable. The restaurant was decent, though I did get sick after our first breakfast, the tofu scramble. The rest of the stay I just went with the oatmeal. Yulia was a very nice server on the breakfast shift. The parking was atrocious. The nearby lot was closed. We had to walk 0.8 miles to the closest lot. A very poor experience all around.

PROS * Convenient location to the Ithaca Commons, an outdoor area with stores and (a few) restaurants, Lake Cayuga, and Lake Seneca * Close to a Wegmans, Chipotle, Panera, etc. Not walking distance but a few minutes away * Accommodating staff was very nice * Restaurant (more on that in cons) * On-site parking * Quiet in the north tower where we stayed--could not hear people in other rooms * Decent gym * Comfortable beds CONS * Hotel is a bit worn, in need of carpet cleaning, replacement, and painting * Hotel not very clean in general, and I saw no cleaning staff vacuuming anywhere on the premises * Entrance area from the side parking lot offensively hot and stuffy * Non-functioning pool * You must call every morning for maid service (making beds, fresh towels, etc). The first day they did not come, we called again, and they came after 5pm * First morning at the restaurant (Sunday), had a normal breakfast, which was fine. Second day was a buffet breakfast, which was absolutely sub-par. Service sub-par as well. We did not eat there after that and had no other meals there * Ithaca has defunded their police. This is not a political statement. They have about 4 police officers for the entire town. We did not see one police officer or police car in 3 full days there, and there are some shady areas of town you will see homeless people, some right by the hotel). I don't know what they're thinking. This is NOT a hotel issue, but something to be aware of Summary: You might be better off with a lower-priced national hotel chain and some serve breakfast for free. Paying extra money to stay here not worth it in my experience. Regardless, please do leave a tip for the cleaning staff, who deserve and need it.

I also went out there during the day and took a nap on a leather couch in an outside tent covered living room in TOTAL SILENCE. Well not total silence. There were birds, frogs, and crickets. There were people if you wanted people (and I met two dogs!) but what struck me was the absolutely silence and solitude I could find. I desperately needed it, and I've NEVER found it like this before. If you go and don't want a balcony, room 104 is the quietest. There's a double door (room and hallway) so any children screaming in delight or adults laughing in the common area is blocked twice. Oh! And there's a trail head to buttermilk falls on property and it's right across from a Buddhist temple which just adds to the ambience. Plus the most delicious food and cider and lake views are found in Ithaca. If you need this, GO.
