Good brunch. The calamari is different from what I expected, but I enjoyed it. The quality was pretty good! For lunch time, they got us seated very quickly and had really nice staff. The coffee / matcha drinks were all okay, so I don't recommend that unless you really want caffeine. The matcha flavors were very interesting. The vibe was really great. Originally from Texas, but having spent 25 years in New England--Cape Cod, the idea of seafood in Rockwall wasn't on our radar. My wife and I often purchased fresh-off-the-boat fish and scallops at one of several markets in Sandwich, MA and the surrounding towns. The restaurants tapped the same "catch-of-the-day" sources which translated to excellent quality at the table, When we dined at Fable and Fire (F&F), we took the wait staff's suggestion for blue crab dip as an appetizer served with delicious toasted bread. It was superb and whetted our appetites for seafood entrees. We ordered sea scallops and shrimp-and-grits. The scallops were perfectly seasoned and cooked--none of the rubberiness that comes from overcooking. It took me back to one of my favorite meals while watching the boats on Cape Cod Bay. Now, if F&F might get its hands on the smaller but sweeter bay scallops,,, Mmmm... Shrimp and grits is something you don't find very often in New England so I was excited to see it on the menu. Well you can't get more Southern than this plate and I'd give it an extra star if I could. No doggy bags for our table. I spoke with Matt Colman, owner of F&F, asking him about sourcing for their seafood items. I came away confident that he and his wife prioritize quality and freshness. It certainly shows in the plated dishes. The 5-star food is matched with a wicked awesome and historic venue (Boston jargon) and super-friendly staff. I wanted to give this place more stars SO badly as the ambience is to die for! However, I came looking for coffee and I'm afraid all I got was warm milk. I asked the barista if the espresso could hold its own (I like coffee that tastes...well, like coffee) and was assured it was strong. This is not the case. I highly recommend you order an extra shot in any espresso drinks if you like coffee. I was very disappointed to have paid 6 bucks and basically received what tasted like hot milk. Also, they had an amazing matcha menu we hoped to order from as well but they are out all matcha?? Weird. This place is so cool and cute. At first you think it's just coffee and pastries but they have a full menu and bar. We were immediately greeted and they were all very nice. It's not a big place but we came on Saturday about 12:30 and they had a brunch menu which was nice for trying it for the first time. The portions are huge and we got a sandwich which they split for us(huge plus to me). The fries are really good too. We got the club and it was actual grilled chicken and shaved turkey not just lunch meat. The bread was fantastic. The okra was perfectly fried and the dip was super good and a bit spicy. read more

Really, this place deserves 3 , not 4, but I really hate to do that to a locally owned place. Nothing was bad, also nothing was particularly good. It was COLD in there like their heater was broken. I had to wrap my husband's coat around my legs for warmth. We started with the lamb meatballs. They were good, but our toasted sourdough was burnt. We both had a Caesar salad. It was smothered in cheap grated parmesan cheese (like the Kraft kind in the plastic shaker) that overpowered the lettuce and dressing. A shredded or shaved parm would really have elevated it and made it more edible. My husband had the steak frites for his entree. The steak was pretty tough despite being cooked medium. I had the scallops. The presentation was nice, but they didn't have much flavor. I also ordered the garlic mashed potatoes. They were not good at all, very blah. The star of the show was the turtle cheesecake we got to go and ate at home. Our service was like our food, not bad , but also not good. The decor is adorable. Didn't listen and somehow messed up my order when we were the only customers. She complained about how she has stayed 1 hour over the time she was supposed to. The full-service bar counter has 14 rather skinny barstools, Jethro & Hoss might not squeeze-in here LOL 3 screens on the wall allow pretty good view of sports, social shows, etc PARKING: if y'all are new to Rockwall, the old downtown courthouse square features several eateries / watering holes, so parking requires some looking around the area, but plenty of free parking within 2 blocks of all sites. The calamari we had was good but the batter was more like fish batter than fried hard like calamari typically is. We also had the crab cake app which was really good! I've been here twice for dinner with parties of 4. Once on a busy Thursday night around 6:30 in mid December. And in February on a Monday around 5 when the place was practically empty. On both occasions, the drinks were absolutely delicious! But unfortunately not worth the wait of 20+ minutes. This includes even a beer they were just pouring out of a bottle to a glass. Anything related to the bar is extremely slow even when the place is empty. Two different bartenders. Two different levels of busy etc. slow either way. The food is probably the best I've had in Rockwall, though that bar is not very high. Again, unfortunately the service very delayed. The food arrival was reasonable but don't expect to see your server again to ask if you need anything or clear your plates, etc. On both occasions someone had to track down a waitress to inquire about a drink order, water refill or plate removal that had been requested more than 15 minutes prior. The removal of plates is important because the tables are very small and really not designed for four people and plates plus 2 glasses (water and cocktail). Which creates an awkward dining experience. I'm unsure if I'll give this place a third shot. I've decided going into Dallas is always the better bet for food though disappointing to have to travel so far. read more

Ambience was beautiful and rustic, very becoming of a bistro on the square. Only complaint is the priciness of the coffee. If they would just make a few adjustments to the food, it would be fabulous. First off, my MIL ordered the eggs benedict, which she said were very tasty, but the potatoes were cold and limp. My grilled cheese, with added bacon, was good. Especially paired with their tomato soup. Boss Lady's hamburger was good, but not good enough for back flips. To end the meal, I got a coffee and tiramisu. The coffee was way too strong, so I took it home to make a whole pot. Unfortunately, we ordered what they call a berry crisp. It was just hot soupy berries with raw oats sprinkled on top, with a scoop of vanilla iced cream. Very disappointing! The interior space is great! It's amazing to see what they did from what it was. Such a fun spot! From the moment you walk into the coffee bar and bakery, through the bookshop and onward into the bistro, you will be greeted by pleasant staff and a very bookish (which I love) and cozy atmosphere. My cousin and I met there on a Thursday at 10am hoping for breakfast, only to find out that they don't serve that on weekdays. We didn't let that deter us, though! We started with two lattes while we caught up and wrapped our heads around lunch and our waitress could not have been more accommodating, patient and sweet. One iced toasted marshmallow and one hot candied nut latte....both yummy! Once we decided to both have the strawberry and basil salads our tummies were pleased! Our server was equally attentive even after we'd paid our check and lingered a while (watching carefully to make sure we weren't keeping a table that could have been needed). On the way out I purchased a book and a cinnamon roll and an apple danish to take home to my husband. He's VERY picky about pastries and could not have been more pleased with both. Legitimately some of the best homemade pasta I've had in a long time! It was a huge portion. Lots of fun cocktails on the menu and of course we had to get dessert! Loved the vibe. What a pleasant surprise this place turned out to be! When I saw an artist I follow post a Saturday brunch gig here, it gave me a good reason to drive over from Dallas to plan to meet up with a few friends who live in the Rockwall/Rowlett area. While only one friend ultimately made it due to conflicts, we had a great time. I will definitely come back soon to connect with the others now that I know Rockwall has such a cool place to hang out. The food was solid. We both enjoyed the steak and eggs. The drink menu was broad, including something for everyone whether you enjoy coffee, tea or an adult beverage. The vibes were excellent.
