Just bought my second set of frames and lenses from Eyes on Fifth. Told them what frames and lens shape from Lindberg that I wanted, and Phil ordered them in for me to make my selection. Phil told me about a coating that makes it easier to see at night when driving. Added this to my purchase as I'm getting older and it's harder to see at night. In this small store you get hundreds to choose from. Is my favorite optic store in Gaslamp and customer service is pleasant. My con goes to the fact that the prices are ridiculously expensive. I would recommend this place only if you are in love with a particular brand, frame and color and are willing the overpriced prices. EXCELLENT service!!! I love this store, and wouldn't go any place else for glasses. They always take the time to listen to you and find exactly what you want. A couple of years ago I bought these lightweight Ray Bans and sadly suddenly lost them. I came to this store where I bought them to try and find the exact same pair right before a weekend trip. I accidentally came by about 15 mins early on Saturday morning. The nice lady who worked there said "Come on in!" even though it meant she had to open a little earlier. This company completely mislead me on a replacement of my brand new frames. I paid almost $700 for a new pair of frames from them and they are now holding them awaiting payment that they negotiated from another eyeglass store who broke them. I have paid for these glasses already and have been a loyal customer. This was supposed to be a replacement and not a repair and I need them for now I am having migraines from straining to read without my new prescription glasses. What they negotiated with this other company was behind my back and I will never do business as a loyal local with either company again. I walked into Eyes on Fifth looking for new glasses and was immediately greeted by Ruthie who was busy helping another customer. I took a minute to look around and was surprised by how many different styles they had, many of which I had never heard of. As soon as Ruthie was done, she quickly helped me answer some questions I had and I was out the door. But before I left she did something for me that made me want to write this review. She politely asked me for my glasses and proceeded to adjust/tighten the screws and clean them off with cleaner and a rag stating, "I can't let you walk out of here with loose glasses." I had not purchased anything and it was my first time in that store. I almost cried. I don't care what you do in life, if you are a dishwasher, a bus driver, or a line cook. If you learn to love what you do, and take pride in your work, it will show. Ruthie takes pride in her work. She doesn't just care about glasses, she cares about people. Just got the coolest looking blue tinted sunglasses back from Eyes on Fifth. Great customer service that took my needs and wants into consideration--not theirs. I have a high index prescription that could make it look as though I am wearing coke bottles...I worked with Toni and when she heard back from the lens manufacturer that going with a polarized lense would give me the coke bottle look that I despise more than an overpriced, mediocre dinner at a Gaslamp restaurant, she gave me a call immediately and we came up with an alternative solution that worked for me, not her company. I appreciated her looking out for my interests. Most other shops I visited only gave me green or brown as a tint option. Not here. Toni worked meticulously to give me a cool looking pair of sunglasses that has me looking like a movie star--I have received compliments on my sunglasses at least once a week from complete strangers since they were purchased...not sure where some of the other complaints about customer service came from....not here. I stopped in and browsed whenever I was in the area. I was always greeted warmly and allowed my space. The staff is there to help, not hustle. When I finally went in with the desire to buy I was assisted but not smothered (my preferred way to shop). I found exactly what I was looking for. This will be my second updated review. My first review was in 2012 and the first updated review was in 2014. It's now 2020 and this will be my third time using Eyes on Fifth. I moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and decided to get a new pair of Tom Davies a few months ago. Instead of ordering from a place in LA, I decided to go back to San Diego and Eyes on Fifth. I walked and was greeted by Ruthie. Ruthie had helped me in 2012 and 2014. Thankfully, she returned back to the store and just in time for my visit after 6 years. They still had my last order from 2014 on their computer. I asked Ruthie for her opinion on colors. She picked out two colors she thought would look good on me. I kept picking out my own colors, but her pick was the color combination I kept coming back to. She's that good. Anyway, the glasses were delayed due to coronavirus and the staff at Eyes on Fifth kept me updated. The glasses will be here shortly and happy I made the decision to come back. I hate writing 1 star reviews, but based on my experience at this shop-it must be done. My boyfriend and I were looking for a very specific pair of sunglasses and made it to the store at 10:30am, 30 minutes after they opened. We asked the woman working about the pair and she immediately told us that she didn't have them. My boyfriend explained that he saw them in the window (yes, the sunglasses were in the window which we saw as we walked by the night before-hence why we went there the next day) and then the woman says VERBATIM "Oh...really? Hold on a minute, I have to brush my teeth." She was holding in her hand a absolutely abused toothbrush that looked like it was used to clean corners. As she made that statement, she lifted her hand to show us that she was holding the tooth brush. And then...she walked away-to actually brush her teeth! For a minute, we were in shock like DID THAT REALLY JUST HAPPEN!? We stood there for a couple minutes and as what just happened soaked in...we decided to leave. There was a man also working in the shop so my boyfriend told him we were leaving because obviously, this woman has to brush her teeth. As we walked out, the woman finally returned and then yelled at us "I'm here!!!" She had the rudest tone as though WE were in the wrong. Um...no. I'm still is disbelief over the service we were provided in this Downtown store. We have since found the sunglasses we were looking for and purchased two pairs from that other store. read more

I've been wearing glasses since I was 9, have been through at least half a dozen versions, and never liked any of them. After coming in to Eyes on Fifth I found that Phil was very friendly and more importantly very knowledgeable. He ran all over the store finding frames he thought were the right match for my face - and he was right. I finally settled on the most expensive pair (Mykita frames - final bill was $800), but I have to say they are, by far, my favorite glasses ever. Not only are they extremely lightweight, stylish, they're also very durable. I recently stopped by again to get some replacement eye cleaner, and Phil retightened my glasses for me. What slight changes had occurred over a year and a half (the hinge got a bit looser) were wiped away, they feel like new now. So even though these glasses were very pricey, for someone who wears glasses 24/7 it makes perfect sense. They've already lasted 3x as long as my previous pair that broke after 6 months. **Update 5/7/14** Just stopped by again for another refill / tightening. The staff was very friendly and quick. Mykitas are going strong after 3 years - after a quick tightening they feel brand new again! read more

Whoa major prick alert! We went into this place to look at some sunglasses that I had been eye balling for a few weeks. At the first the experience was pleasant however, it turned bad when I attempted to take a photo of the tag on the sunglasses. Apparently, making sure I am getting a fair deal is not OK with the folks here. An older man with a white beard rudely exclaimed that they don't allow customers to take photos of tags and uncomfortablely lunged in my direction. Good thing I priced checked...I found the same pair of shades for $300 cheaper online. My girlfriend found a nice pair of reasonably priced glasses that we would have purchased however, this encounter certainly ruined the opportunity for that sale. read more

The store has a large selection of frames to choose from and the girl working behind the counter was approachable and helpful even though she was already helping someone when I walked in. My issue is with the pretentious male with the too clever for school over sized red frames. He had an phone earpiece in the whole time while attempting to help me my first visit in the store. He attempted to help me while taking the call but it seemed as though I was bothering him as he only spoke to the person on the other side of the call and not to me. My real issue arose when I went back in to ask them about pricing, since they only take one form of insurance which is understandable. I asked whether or not they would be willing to do any price matching on some of the frames as the price in the store was over twice as much as what the price was online. A simple no would have done but what I was given instead was a lecture on his pricing model. That mark up is outrageous and the lecture was rude and not needed. If you are in need a pair of frames fast and have the money these guys seem like they would be a great fit but be sure to avoid the manager with the ear piece, the large frames, and rude attitude. read more

A couple of years ago, I walked into the shop thinking the same as everyone else...that I break or lose my sunglasses all the time and would never spend more than $30. After about 20 minutes of searching and education from the staff (particularly on how bad cheap lenses are for my eyes!), I tried on a pair that instantly relaxed my eyes when I looked up into the San Diego sky (I normally strain due to light sensitivity so I felt a profound difference in the tension instantly). The polarized lenses practically gave me HD vision and were a blast to show off to other people. I think I've had about 30 people try them on and you get the same effect as when someone sees HD television for the same time! So, that's half the good news. The best news is that I walked in today to ask about a small wearing point on one of my lenses. Without question, I was handed a brand new pair and reminded that my shades had a lifetime guarantee! Bottom line, you get what you pay for and Eyes on Fifth has exceeded my expectation with a solid backup to their products. Worth every penny. If I could give them less than 1 star, I would. The only thing I can think of is that the owners of this store are here purely as a tourist trap and couldn't care less about customer service. One of the rudest and most abusive retail experiences ever, and they have shady sales practices and policies to go along with it. Best selection of frames and sunglasses I have encountered that steps outside the box when it comes to style, but doesn't sacrifice on quality. I bought some frames here a few years ago, and took my buddy Serge in here yesterday. I saw a pair of AMAZING sunglasses that were very unique. I asked Phil (the owner) if I could try them on. He was very friendly and told me I had a great eye and that I would love them, but he also admitted i would not love the price. I was expecting $300 or so, but no, they were $550!!! That is outside of my budget, but I loved them so much that if i had a better income I would have bought them. My favorite frames are these Danish ones by the window. I bought a pair a few years ago, but they were stolen :( Phil was very helpful and offers AWESOME customer service. I highly recommend this shop.
