My eye care provider left the Chicago area late in 2022, shortly after my last exam. Of course, I did what people do in this situation: procrastinated until I was in a 'spend it or lose it!' situation with my FSA account. In truth, I'd been walking past Eye See almost daily since moving into the neighborhood and liked the idea of supporting a small business. They accepted my insurance, so I made an appointment. It was a wonderful experience right from the start. I sent the exam information my last eye doctor provided along with my insurance info. On appointment day, they were not only ready but extremely understanding when I was a little late. (I don't make a habit of being late, but am grateful that they understood!) The entire exam was extremely thorough, and opting for the retinal image (instead of pupil dilation) is definitely worth it: I returned to my home office and immediately resumed work with no blurred vision - hurray! Dr. Becherer took time to carefully examine my eyes and my current glasses/contacts, reviewed my eye history thoroughly, and made good suggestions for my specific eye situation. I picked glasses (super cute selection!), and with Marina's assistance got those ordered and got reconnected with the contact lens manufacturer, so great continuity of care. I have not yet received glasses or contacts, but based on today's experience, don't foresee any issues. Finally, I must mention the great tote bag I received - photo below. The first time I saw Dr Stein, she asked what my current contact prescription was. Though I mentioned a ballpark number, I couldn't remember the exact figure off the top of my head, and she became increasingly exasperated. I explained that it was my first visit, and no one had informed me that I needed to bring in my previous prescription, something that I had to repeat to her a few times as she became tunnel-visioned with frustration. She then ran out of the room and exclaimed to one of her colleagues, loud enough for me to hear, "You won't BELIEVE the morning I'm having." When she came back, she seemed a little calmer and started making conversation, asking about my job and career. She became a little nicer, I suspect, because it had something to do with her changed class assessment of me. As a doctor, maybe she could just be professional toward all her patients regardless? I have seen Dr Stein a few other times beyond that first visit. Though the subsequent visits have been fairly routine and workmanlike, the blunt, swerving impression I had of Dr Stein from that first visit definitely left a bad taste I couldn't wipe out. During the pandemic and the wave of anti-Asian hate, I decided to switch to another eye clinic, a place that's a little pricier but more professional. I always felt on edge during those visits. Well, I ran out of contacts, so I needed to make my yearly eye appointment. Since I recently moved, I wanted to see if there was any place in the neighborhood because I am a sucker for convenience. Luckily, I got stuck on a one-way street, because I happened upon Eye See. And they had a website, which is great because I like to do a bit of investigating. I took a look at Yelp, too, and the six reviews I found here were all five-star, which helped me make my decision! Add in the fact that it's about a ten minute walk from my home, and I set up my appointment. They have some evening appointment times, which is great because I hate having to use personal hours or sick leave to accommodate appointments. They were able to get me in right away when I got there, and both Maggie and Dr. Stein were helpful and kind. No eye puff, either, which is great! Dr. Stein offered me a couple of different contacts to try until my follow-up exam. I've used Acuvue in the past, and she said that those are pretty much the most expensive contacts on the market; that was news to me, because those are the only ones I've ever been offered for the last four or five years. I just made the assumption that other lens brands were inferior, but Dr. Stein let me know that these are less expensive, if they work well for me. It is a great feeling when someone you're relying on for expertise works to help save you money from the get-go. read more

I have been going to the eye doctor since I was five years old. In all of that time, I have NEVER had an experience even 1/10th as great as what I have gotten here! Dr. Stein is so kind and seemed genuinely interested in both my optical history and me as a person. Conversation was so comfortable and easy that I nearly forgot I was at a doctor's visit! She took the time to go over my retinal photographs and actually explained everything to me, which I really appreciated. When it came time to order my contacts, Randy went above and beyond to help me get all of the rebates available and made sure I had complete records of everything that went on. And that Randy... I was surprised to see so many positive reviews for Eye See Ravenswood. My experience (both times) has been horrible. My first time visiting (last year for contacts) was a little strange because Dr. Stein and her assistant kept bickering back and forth the entire time I was there. They also overcharged me several hundred dollars, which fortunately they discovered a couple weeks later. This year I decided to give them a second chance. Everything went fine until it was time to pick out my glasses. The assistant sat me down (and honestly I was surprised to see he still worked there) and explained to me that I was basically getting screwed by my insurance and there was nothing I could do about it. Even with vision insurance, he told me I would owe about $500. His condescending attitude convinced me to pay for just the exam and leave without ordering the glasses. Will buy glasses somewhere else and will not return. No excuse for that kind of customer service. read more

Now I've been there as a patient! Even more awesome. Dr. Stein is totally thorough (by far the most involved eye exam I've ever had.) Maggie and Greg the technicians are really knowledgeable when it comes to your insurance. The whole atmosphere of the office is really warm and laid back, but still has a clean, modern design. I never had vision insurance until recently so I felt I was entitled to a "splurge." Is Eye See as cheap as Target or Costco? No. But I finally had that epiphany of "why would I trust my VISION to the same store I buy toilet paper?" I had an extremely thorough, custom exam and picked out darn cute glasses, that, let's face it, I deserved after all these years. (Actually, Greg picked 'em out!) He thoroughly explained everything and was very positive and pleasant. Additionally, this place has high tech diagnostic tools that are very cool and fascinating. I've been going to Eye See Ravenswood for three years now and have never had a bad experience. The staff is friendly and incredibly patient. I've struggled for years with the inability to put in contact lenses and touch my eye. It sounds silly that it would be so hard for me to put in lenses for the first time, but it was a very frustrating process to learn how to become comfortable with putting my fingers near my eyes. I'm pleased to announce that after my last appointment with Eye See Ravenswood I was able to insert the contacts by myself! The staff and doctor were super patient and helpful in helping me get used to touching my eyes and didn't make me feel silly that it was difficult for me to do initially. I am a grad student. As such, I read...and then read...and then read some more. Needless to say, since my eyes have been red and strained for the past 3 years, it was time to make an appointment. I happen to have *horrific* eyesight, so I wanted to err on the side of caution. Based on the Yelp reviews, I headed over to see Dr. Stein. I'll say this. She gets it done. I had a looooong appointment as they did the whole comprehensive exam and a contact fitting. Dr. Stein couldn't have been more professional or apparently competent. I'm still in the process of getting the new contacts so there may be more to come, but thus far, it's been a great place. I would definitely note: Dr. Stein calls 'em like she sees 'em. You're not really going to get warm and fuzzy love from her; she seemed a little brusque and distant maybe. That said, I just want to see. If she comes through, I'm good. Super plus: As a grad student I don't have eye insurance. She gave me a 20% discount on all the fees, so I ended up paying less than the quote I got on the phone as I was doing my research. This place is amazing. I was cleaning my glasses yesterday afternoon when they just snapped right down the middle between the lenses, every glasses wearer's worst nightmare. I called Eye See frantically last night, and luckily, they came to the rescue. They had availability this morning and were so incredibly accommodating. First of all, both the doctor and the man in the front desk area are incredibly kind and great at their jobs. They were really explanatory with everything from the machines they used, the results, what kind of shape my eyes are in, even down to how my insurance works when it comes to vision. I had my exam, went through the routines and was set to pick out a new pair of frames when they did the KINDEST thing for me. Because they didn't want me to have to walk around with my duct-taped, nerd glasses for a week, they took my lenses out of my broken frames, found a set of frames that fit the lenses well enough and are loaning them to me until my new pair of glasses come in. I cannot even begin to explain how above and beyond this was and how incredibly sweet it was for them to do this for me, a first-time customer no less. I will definitely be coming back and recommending them to anyone I know. They are kind, intelligent, helpful, and really great about explaining everything. I never felt intimidated or overwhelmed. They were very clear about how my insurance in particular works and talked me through everything. I chose this place mostly because it's close to home and b/c of good Yelp reviews - so I'll add to the good reviews. Location - A plus for me because I live and work close to Ravenswood. Service/Expertise - this was what was the best part about it. I went to a much larger place in the past and always had random people do a bunch of tests on me. At Eye See Ravenswood I had one tech help me and then was with Dr. Stein the rest of the time. Also, I barely had to wait at all! Did you hear that - no waiting!!!!! The equipment they use all was very cool and futuristic and Dr. Stein was warm and not scary like doctors can sometimes be - she was also honest about my best choices for lenses, Lasik etc... not just what might make her more money. I also was given a follow up letter with details about my general health that they can apparently tell from the in-depth eye exam - so cool. On top of that, even though I decided to order my contacts on-line, I was able to get my receipt and info needed for a rebate emailed to me immediately. Also, my insurance doesn't have great eye coverage (surprise) but they were very accommodating to help me out however they could which is nice for a fellow small business owner such as myself. So, if you like smaller, local type places that provide a comfortable atmosphere without compromising any high-tech equipment and medical expertise, then this is a good choice for an eye doctor. read more

I don't know where to begin. This entire experience trumps all of those I've ever had with any eye doctor, be it in Chicago or the west coast, where I toggle between often. I was able to get an appointment for a comprehensive exam / fitting really quickly despite an ongoing pandemic. Speaking of which, the office staff clearly took every necessary precaution to ensure that the equipment and surrounding environments remained sanitized. The first person I dealt with was Randy - and he was superb. From handling the paperwork before arriving to the office, to handling the process post examination - this guy was ON POINT. He carefully explained the process, all itemized charges, and he could not have been more concise and transparent. Mariana was the assistant who conducted preliminary testing and she was super friendly and so great to deal with. Lastly, Dr Stein. The highlight of my visit. She was amazing. Dr. Stein was so pleasant, welcoming, and made sure my comfort was her utmost priority while she precisely engaged in her craft. Unlike other eye doctors I've experienced in the past, she took her time and I felt unrushed. Of course, this made me feel valued. There is literally nothing that could have enhanced this already amazing experience. The only thing upsetting to me is that it took me this long to find this office. She noticed on my chart that she lived on the end of my block and we chatted about the neighborhood while she set up for my exam. I am so happy I found this place! I knew it was time to go to the eye doctor (and I was pretty sure I had an eye allergy) so I wanted to see someone who actually knew what they were talking about. I found Eye See Ravenswood on Yelp and made an appointment for the same day. Dr. Stein was wonderful. She spent 45 minutes with me and helped me understand my eye issues and recommended some major changes (a new type of lens, a new type of contact solution, and eye drops) and carefully walked me through everything. She seemed genuinely interested in finding a good contact fit for me and told me not to buy anything until my one-week follow up visit, where we'll see how my eyes have adapted to the changes. I actually felt like I mattered and wasn't just another number or another sale (which is exactly how I felt at For Eyes in the past). I highly recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood. I found out that they've only been open for a couple of months but clearly they know what they are doing. The prices (for the comprehensive eye exam and contacts exam) were a little more expensive than what you'd pay at a chain store but I promise you, the service, professionalism, and care that you get is 100x better and it's totally worth it. read more

Three things that make this place great: 1) Dr. Stein explains the exam in a way that anyone can understand and is very patient in answering questions. She is very professional and friendly. Dr. Stein is great - helpful, relaxed and personable, and she explained every test to me. I am so happy to have found this place. As others have noted, Dr. Stein gives very thorough eye exams - the longest I have ever had, as a matter of fact. I enjoyed being treated as an informed client with a stake in my own eye care rather than being hurried through as though my appointment were some sort of inconvenience. My favorite thing about the exam is that it didn't include the dreaded air-puff cataracts exam (the thing I hate most about eye exams). Just a gentle dilation and professional look-see. The selection of eye glasses were fashionable and varied. It was refreshing to see some variations from the standard rectangular frames du jour. Dr. Stein was up front about the nominal cost of an additional test (to avoid having pupils dilated) and and answered all my questions without making me feel dumb. I've been trying to avoid doing this as I hate...HATE having to say something negative about someone, but I feel I owe it to others. First let me start by saying I can't believe I missed Sue V's review...I had EXACTLY the same issue with my lenses...I got my exam, Joy is nice, the Doc is awesome...everything went well. Then I picked up my glasses... I go in to pick them up and the instant I put them on, I knew they were blurry...what does Joy say after (what seemed like to me) reluctantly measuring me again?...get this..."Oh yeah, I didn't get the numbers right....and it your prescription changed"...really? In one week? I go to pick up my second try...and guess what. Still blurry/fuzzy around the edges. I mentioned it and she DID offer to try some stuff, which she did, and it didn't help...then I noticed that they looked bent...not like they got run over by a car bent...but more like one lens is pitched up...making it look as if though I have a lop sided head...like they're crooked!...that's the word crooked...the response to that?..."I'm not trying to make excuses, but with people that have astigmatism, that happens sometimes..."....come on. I'm not a schmuck, I know that my lenses have to be on an axis, which is exactly what's wrong...if I tilt the glasses...I see perfect. PERFECT!...so, my conclusion was that the lenses were cut incorrectly. If that was the Doc's fault or the lab they use....well, that's for someone else to find out. I just know that I won't go back there. $250 PLUS! my insurance coverage later and I'm glad I opted for the second vision coverage plan from my work...or I would have REALLY raised hell. It's alright, $250? keep it along with the insurance money...one happy customer = 2 potential customers...one upset customer = dozens of lost customers. read more

I have gotten an eye exam from this place a few years back. So I thought I'd go back this year. I was running 15min late. I called the office 20min ahead of my scheduled appt to let the doc know and ask if I should still be on my way or just turn around and head home. It was raining out, traffic. As always when I call this office, I get a voicemail. I left one. I show up at 315 and there's another patient by the counter, it looked like they're just finishing up. She says "I can't see you" right off the bat. No hello or any type of greeting. That's besides the point. She says I'm late and that's the reason why she can't see me. If I would've been there at 3pm, she would've been able to see me. BS. How? Were you going to double up on your patients. You clearly weren't done with your previous one by 3. So you would've been running back and forth between us? Half-assing your job? I tell her I left a voicemail before my appointment to see if I should still head over and I didn't hear back so I came anyway instead of just being a complete no show. She claims she was too busy to check. Ok, she knew she had a 3pm appointment. She was too busy to check her business voicemail for 1min but she wouldn't have been busy enough to do my eye exam at 3pm when she was still seeing a previous patient? It doesn't make any sense. It would've been good business practice to return my call and tell me you couldn't see me and to reschedule before the appointment time. Instead of me wasting my time and showing up. I know it was late, and I'm not mad because you didn't see me. You have all the right not to see late patients, but you do have the obligation to communicate to your patients and take 1 min to return a call/voicemail. And on top of that, not put the sole blame on the client when you be were backed up as well. Definitely not going back. Service from last time was not worth her lack of basic professionalism this time. read more

My new glasses arrived from the lab to with horrible scratches in the left lens, so I returned them. Eye See Ravenswood sent them back to the lab, but the glasses returned with deep scratches in the right lens this time. I am currently waiting for my THIRD pair of lenses. It's now been 3 weeks (and counting) since my exam, and I have nothing to show for the hundreds of dollars I paid for new glasses. According to what I was told by Eye See Ravenswood, it'll be close to a month after my exam until they expect my glasses to be ready. I don't blame the staff of Eye See Ravenswood per say, but this wait and incompetence on the part of the lab is getting a little bothersome. Perhaps they should find a more professional and competent lab to cut their lenses. read more

Only one over-whelmed person working the entire shop and they spent all of their time trying to resolve an issue for one exasperated client. I have the worst vision of anyone eye know (wa waaaa). I've been seeing eye doctors since I was old enough to walk into walls. How many people do you know who wear gas permeable contact lenses? None? Ok. Then there's me. Never worn anything else. Dr Stein and her staff are really great. They are super friendly and reasonable since RGP lenses cost a million dollars and you can get pretty ripped if you don't know how much they should really cost. These are not the kind of thing you can just order on the internet so you're going to pay whatever people charge you in an office. Anyway, Dr Stein is attentive and remembers me well every time I come in, ever since my first appointment. (How could she forget my -14?) Eye See is one of the most customer-friendly places I've been to for glasses. Granted, the only reason I went there was because we had vision coverage on our insurance, and since we were shelling out $$$ each month while on COBRA, I figured I may as well get my money's worth. If you have kids, it's definitely worth it. Dr. Stein was very kind and patient with each of my kids (13, 12, and a somewhat difficult 8) and very helpful picking out frames for the oldest. Additionally, when the 13 y.o. had his glasses smashed by a volleyball, they kindly bent the frames back into manageable shape, at no charge. I was absolutely floored by what a thorough, careful exam I got here ... especially compared to my previous optometrist. Dr. Stein moved me to more "modern" contacts and her follow-up was great. I needed to have a little prescription adjustment, and the steps she took to ensure that I was satisfied really impressed me. As others have mentioned, the vibe is relaxed and respectful. I didn't feel "up-sold" or steered to products I didn't need/want. Bottom line: Dr. Stein is great -- thorough, extremely professional, responsive to questions. The office is really sleek and she's savvy enough to be doing business digitally -- digital invoicing, etc. Health care can be such a giant pain in the butt, but my experience at Eye See Ravenswood was extremely, extremely pleasant.
