Extremely unprofessional and disturbing experience at Extra Space Storage - 300 Market St, Oakland. I rented two units here (both with 24-hour access, which I paid extra for) because I'm a full-time, live-in caregiver and can only access storage during off-hours. Despite this, I was confronted around midnight by a woman who never identified herself as staff. She yelled at me, accused me of stealing, blocked my exit, screamed profanities, and insisted I was lying about having two units. I had keys, proof of payment, and was simply moving my own items between the two paid units. After paying extra for the "best package" I learned that 24-hour access is only honored if you have a business license--which I do have and had already planned to bring in. None of this was communicated upfront. The treatment I received was completely unacceptable, and I've filed a formal complaint with corporate. I would not recommend this location to anyone--especially if you value safety, communication, or being treated like a paying customer. read more

Staff are very uncomfortable expressing /explaining why my unit went from 300$ up to 350$ then now 400$ within months and not even sending me a notification or email of the price jump because if had done so I would have politely declined the offer and spent my hard earned cash somewhere else!! read more

This place is really a shame. The structure seems good and the location is convenient-- though expensive as a result. But their attitude is a tragedy. They have hundreds of inconvenienced clients who have complained, including myself, that they have not fixed the loading dock door that gives movers and customers access. This is a simple business: provide entry, provide space, provide egress. Without access to the loading dock two of the functions are not provided! Yet they expect customers to pay on time and without complaint. Sorry. It stinks. They claim they can't get a part but this is a standard warehouse door and there are a dozen service providers in the Bay Area. They just are cheap and inconsiderate. To boot, they are deaf to their paying customer's complaints... just don't make the same mistake yourself by putting your good here. read more

Ive had horrible experience with this place. The staff is grumpy and unforgivingly lazy. Save yourself the headache and go anywhere else. The elevator is often out of service and there are no stairs to come down from the third floor which is a fire hazard and a huge inconvenience. I highly recommend avoiding this place. Lazy, uncooperative management means the simplest visit will be trouble. There is only one rolling cart for all 600 storage units. Which means you will almost certainly not have one to use when you need it. Not a problem if you're just moving some boxes; huge problem if there's heavy furniture involved. Manager will tell you that there might be a second cart but she can't find it. If you ask her to call a district manager and ask them to bring more carts because it's sortof a big problm she will tell you that carts are too expensive and she is too busy to contact anyone who could do something about the problem Need to use the bathroom while you're loading in or out? Good news! There's a bathroom. Bad news! The manager cannot locate the bathroom key and does not have a spare. If you're a stand-up pee-er, just go out and pee on the street like everyone else. If you're the sit-down sort and not particularly flagrant, then you'll have some issues. These are simple problems that many many other storage companies have managed to solve. But not Extra Space. Their incompetence is remarkable. read more

TIP: Come prepared. It will save you time & money!! 1) Bring evidence of your homeowners/renters insurance showing your personal property is covered. They require you to have insurance covering your belongings in storage, so if you don't have proof when you pay, you have to pay for theirs ($14/month) until you do. 2) Bring a padlock. Or two; there are two lock slots on each unit door. I recommend the discus ones (unless you lose keys a lot and it will end up needing to be cut, in which case I suggest a 2 standard locker lock lol). If you don't have one when you pay for your unit, you'll have to buy one (they have a variety available). DEETS *There are 2 elevators, but only one of them goes to the 3rd floor, so be aware if you get a third floor unit. *There is a loading dock on one side in which multiple cars can pull fully in and be covered!!! Have to go up ramp/stairs to get to first level/elevator, though. But it blew my mind. It can get popular at peak days/times, so there are also street level gates that I like to use to avoid other people lol. *Your gate security code is individual! So they can lookup who was in the building at any given time if needed ... *You punch in your personal code at a regular door. The code unlocks the door, allowing you inside where you can hit a button to open the respective large roll-up door. *They have flatbed carts available (and not locked up), so if it's busy you may have to look at the other elevator to find one. * When they're taking you around take note of unit numbers and "landmarks" to learn the way. They do not have maps posted! *There's an emergency sprinkler system which has relatively low pipes. You cannot block them. You have 77" clearance for height. *Biggest plus: You will not find more extensive gate hours elsewhere!! Clean & decently lit halls. Individual units are too dim as there is no lighting above them. Unit design means that bars and whatnot will be in the way - it's not 4 smooth, uninterrupted wall surfaces. Tonia was nice and took time to make sure I understood everything; from the rental contract to how to get in. {Would have liked to been told my two tips either of the two times I spoke with her on the phone though}. DO NOT RENT WITH THIS LOCATION. Once we were past the contract period they raised my rent EVERY MONTH. When I moved out (5 days after I had paid rent) I was told that I would receive a refund for the rent I already paid on my next normal billing date. In lieu of the refund I was owed, they charged me an additional month of rent. They assured me that this was a billing error, but over a week after the supposed error, I still have not received a refund on the rent charged in error, nor the refund I was owed after I moved out. I can't even get them to call me back despite leaving three messages (several days apart). Additionally, it is nearly impossible to catch these people in the office. I once stood around outside their front door for 45 minutes after they said they'd be back. They never answer phone calls and (as I stated above) rarely return your phone call (I leave my name and phone number 2x each time I leave a message). And there are always cars parked in the loading bays. These are not other movers, they're the same cars EVERY TIME. They don't move, and they're there at all hours, it would appear. The Castro Valley Location is who I am reviewing. I had a very small closet storage space, but no matter how small it was it's still my irreplaceable things. They AUCTIONED IT WITH NO NOTICE. They were sending mail to my old address. I knew I never received a letter, but I wasn't too concerned because I knew that they had my phone number and my email. I thought I would receive notices by email. I had suffered job loss and got behind on my payments, and while my payments are my responsibility. I still expect better Customer Service. What I am upset about is that their customer service did not warrant any urgency in notifying me that my stuff was going to be up for auction if I did not come in and/or pay by a certain date. I called on the 11th Oct. 2019, to find out the status and I was told you are behind 71 days. I said okay I will be in this weekend. Shannon should have said, "your stuff is due to be auctioned on the 15th of the month," I thought I had at least 90 days. I went in that following Sunday and the office was closed. I went the following week after I called, and a sign said we will be back after 1:00 but it was 1:30 and nobody was in the office. I then called and I spoke to Hanna, I said, "I have made two attempts to come to the office and make a payment in person." I am wondering if I can come in next weekend. She (Hanna) said, your stuff has been auctioned. I said, WHAT?! What address do you have? She repeated an old address. The Manager called me once over the course of three months, and only after I called them to inquire. I have not received any statements. I received one email. I do not know why the emails stopped. I thought in these times, I would receive emails or some type of email alert. Even when I called inquiring how far behind was I, she (Shannon) still did not alert me that my possessions were up for auction. It is my responsibility to pay my bill, but during these 2 months that I got behind in my payments, I was having a lot of personal problems. I feel that the best Customer Service would have been to make sure that they had spoken to me, and tried every possible way to notify me of the status of my account before auctioning. They could have given me some type of notification that my stuff was up for auction. They didn't so much as leave a voicemail saying your stuff is up for auction, I received no warning. I found out by calling them trying to come in to make a payment. I have used Public Storage and Security Public Storage off and on over the last 30 years and I have never experienced anything like this. They still have something called Certified Mail! I will NEVER EVER USE THEM AGAIN AND I HOPE YOU DO NOT EITHER. Life happens! What if I was homeless and everything I owned was in that storage! If they were in the rental space business they should have been more concerned about receiving payment and trying to get their money more than the sale of my items! The supervisor called me and he was apologetic enough, but all he could say is my Manager has been there for 15 years (I am sorry). Well, this is POOR management. Hanna said she would try to call somewhere to someone to see if maybe I could get my paperwork back, but when I called her to follow up she said she got busy. I rented TWO 10x10 units there, for several years. TWICE, they jumped the gun and locked me out of my units, BEFORE this was even legally allowed. I even came to the facility with buyers, cash in hand, to purchase items in my units and could pay them everything, but they illegally denied me access. Instead, they went directly to wanting to just steal and auction off my belonings. I resisted that and attempted to negotiate with them, which they refused, instead putting a hostile attorney on the phone with me and trying to intimidate me. Now they're trying to sue me in court. But I have witnesses and evidence. I intend to sue them, instead. Stay away from these sharks. read more

I have been a customer here for years. In the past year, the staff has become unbearable. I imagine it is difficult to find good help, but honestly, it is frustrating to the point I am moving out. The manager and her husband could not be nicer, they are lovely people, but the staff is just too much for me to handle. I really think the facility is safe and clean, and I have house my precious belongings here for a long long time. It's time to get them out. The online system for this company is not so great. I tried to pay my bill, which I do successfully every month, but it kept bouncing me off. I have two units, paid one with no trouble at all. Not sure what the problem is, but it just isn't a terribly sophisticated site. Then I called to pay, well, you can imagine how that went. I used extra space storage for a two month period this summer while in the process of moving from SF to the East Bay. I signed up online for the two month free offer on a unit. At the time I assumed there was some kind of catch and that since I only needed two months I wouldn't get the deal. When I went to move in, Oliver at the desk was extremely helpful and friendly, he honored the online deal and I only paid for fees and insurance. He even offered my boyfriend and I some fresh baked cookies and gave us advice about East Bay neighborhoods. The space was clean and the gate made it easy to come and go, which I did a lot while in between homes. I never had any trouble with the gate, and I love that everything was online so I could check my account and know exactly when I had to be out by to not get billed for an additional month. The day I checked out the woman at the desk was cheerful and friendly, it was the easiest storage experience I've ever had. read more

I'm with Lauren N. - this place is skeevy. Yeah, it's clean. It's usually not too crowded (can fit 4 cars in the loading bay area but there is almost ALWAYS the manager's car in 1 spot and sometimes people don't pull all the way forward in the other row). The units are not temp controlled as Bill D. mentioned; my unit is on the top floor and on hot days it is gross and stuffy. The fan at the end of the hall lets you know it's working with a constant horrible squeaking/rotating noise that hasn't been fixed for most of the time I've been there (about 9 months.) The exceptionally skeevy part is about my rate: signed up for the web deal expecting to be locked in, as was the case with my last rental (not with ES). A month later my boyfriend signs up for the same size unit though he can't get the credit for my referral (because he's already rented with ES before I guess?) - and the price has increased for that size unit by about $20. I get a discounted rate for 2 months, then my rate increases $20 to match his, then on the 6th month (not after the 6th month) my rent is increased $75 - a month later he gets hit with the same increase. Doesn't seem like a lot, but with our combined units we're now paying an extra $150/month = $500 between us than the less than $300 we expected when first signing up. There's no email record of our application through the electronic system they use, for referencing our initial deal. And somehow they manage to tack on enough sign up fees to make the first payment a lot fluffier than the web rate hook that gets you in the door (when someone is there to answer it, that is). When I talked to a rep at corporate there was no shame in their game to admit that they do rate reviews every 6-9 months to jack up the rent (aka "stay competetive"), the rate will NEVER go down to match the market if there's lower in the area, and the reason for this is that ES claims they "tend to have the best security and cleanliness." Looking to gtfo asap and never look back ;p read more

We have one big trip a year and the items we need are in the storage unit we pay for. When we reached Extra Space Storage on 6/29 at 9:45pm, our code didn't work. We thought it was too late. On 6/30 at 6:00, our code didn't work again. We called, emailed, etc. Nobody was available to assist us. They say someone is "on site." NOBODY is there!!!! We didn't have our things and were a day late leaving for our trip. We pay every month for access and the ONE time we really need it, we could not get into the building! When calling, the woman on the phone said there was a "reset" or some computer problem. We were not notified. There was nobody to help. And no compensation or apology has been made. As soon as we can, we will remove our belongings. read more

first off: pros: i feel that my things are safe here. the place is very secure and they have a manager that lives on site. the prices are okay. always go with the internet price. i think prices fluctuate throughout the month. the price i am paying now is lower than the one offered on the site currently for a 5x5. the cons now: i went there and had said that my sister has recommended the place to me. after signing up and all the paperwork bs, i notice signs saying that if someone recommends the place to you they get 50 bucks off their next month of rent. so i mention it to the lady and she goes, "oh, its too late now." and hands me some coupons for the next time she recommends the place to someone. right. thanks. but overall i feel secure there. only other thing, i wish there was a map to navigate the place because its a big place with no direction signs anywhere. read more

I've been using this storage facility for 18 months now, and I am in and out on a regular basis. Latanya and Reggie are really on top of the place, keeping it clean and safe - all while being personable and knowing everything they need to know to help customers like me. Even though it is not the closest facility to my home, it is definitely the right place for my possessions. It's also a place where I feel safe coming and going on a regular basis. I stored my stuff here for one month with no problems, then today my car was broken into (window smashed) while I went to my unit. I was literally gone for no more than 5 minutes, car was parked in their lot right next to the entrance door. This happened in broad daylight. I no longer feel safe here so I am moving out asap. I chose this facility over the others in the area since it was much cheaper. Turns out I've lost over $2k from the items stolen from my car...a very expensive storage space after all. read more

They STEAL your belongings here. TWICE, they locked me out of my unit ILLEGALLY before they even had any right to. They knew that I was selling items that I kept there, including to pay their rent. So by locking me out, they prevented my ability to make the $ to pay them, too! The first time, I found this out when I came with a buyer. I had to contact the corporation that actually owns the property in order to resolve the matter, which cost me extra time and money just to do what I had every right to do in the first place. Then they DID IT AGAIN... right at Xmas time! They had company lawyers harass me with legal actions, all of which I eventually could not afford to keep fighting... so they "legally" then STOLE all my belongings and tried to get me to PAY them thousands more for doing so. I should have known on day 1, when the manager had her car parked in the loading dock and was forced to unload my stuff in the rain, this would not go well. About a year later, I tried to access the place on a Sunday which I should have been able, but somehow the access codes were wiped out and I was not able to get into the unit, costing me money, because it took two hours for someone to get a hold of the manager. Now today, when I wanted to get in and make a couple of changes on my only day off, the office was closed! There was a sign that it was closed from 12noon until 2pm on my only day off during the week. I called and left a message, but 5 hours later, no return call. Do yourself a favor and use any center but this one. read more

I would not recommend this storage facility, Dealing with them was a complete nightmare. First off, I had a reservation for a 10x20 unit and wait for three hours for them to open (they didn't open until 9:30) and when I got there they pulled a batch and switch on me and tried to sell me two 10x10 units instead saying that it was a 10x20. Since I have clothing racks that are 12 ft long and too much stuff to stuff into to separate units there was no way I could do it. I opted for the 10x15 unit which was more expensive. When I was trying to unload the stuff the carts they had didn't work and kept running into the walls and were impossible to manuever while navigating through the maze that is their storage facility. When i got there the facility had no lights in it and was totally dark. I had to repack all of my stuff and move to another unit. It cost me over a hundred dollars to rent my truck for another day and drive to another facility. When I tried to talk to the district manager Nicole she had absolutely no sympathy for my situation even though the call center admitted that they had made a mistake and should of informed me that they did not have a 10x20 unit. I tried to tell her that if I wanted two ten by ten units I would of called and asked for that. She said that because she was giving me the same square footage it was just a multi-door which was laughable because it would of required me to be buried in my stuff and buying an extra lock. There are tons of bettter facilities that actually have lights and working carts to transport your stuff. Don't fall for their bait and switch tactics. The extra discount isn't worth the hassle and they are totally unprofessional. A simply apology from the district manager would of been sufficient but instead she was rude and dismissive. Since my father runs mini storage units and I know that its unethical to try to advertise to seperate units as one I was completely shocked. read more

First of all, the place is so clean and tho I was concerned about the accessability of units I soon realized that this was not an issue at all. The whole space is well organized, well lit and easy to figure out. the staff was particularly helpful and warm. I actually had fun while signing up for my unit. They are also flexible and have been so helpful to me I really can't say enough about this. I fell safe and secure and feel my things are as well. read more
