Our daughter moved home for a year to do her externship. Our initial experience with Extra Space Storage was a good one. It was easy to reserve a storage unit, the staff was helpful and it was a decent price. I have to admit that's where our good experience ended. At the end of the year the price went up 25% and this past weekend we moved our daughter out of the unit. We found a lot of mouse droppings and quite a bit of damage due to the mice. Things were chewed through and urine covered a lot of items so we ended up throwing a lot out. When we were moving the items into the moving van a mouse came out of a piece of furniture. We did not store anything food related so they weren't enticed by that. I am not quite sure what the solution is for a mouse issue in a large facility like that but something has to be done. read more

This facility (Burke VA.) is VERY CLEAN, People are VERY NICE, Everything is great - BUT - We got this unit less than 3 years ago, WE got the special. BUT Once that special deal was over, our monthly cost MORE THEN DOUBLED in LESS THAN 3 year to almost 300 per month. WHY! Went to the Public storage that was only a few miles away, Got the unit for a good 6 month deal and will save amost $200 per month to boot once the special is over. I would have love to give them, 4 or 5 stars, but after all this is a storage unit. No climate controlled, and for almost $300. Nope not when I can pay (with no special deal) less than $200 per month. read more

I've used the climate control units at the Fred Oaks Road Extra Space Storage location for several years. This facility is easy to access and the grounds and interior of the building are very clean and have no odors in the building. I have never had any issues with accessing my storage unit or any damage to any of my stored items. The gentlemen working in the office are very personable and helpful with any questions and advising in the decision of which size/type unit will best meet your needs and the best location within the building based on what is to be placed in storage. They give you peace of mind your items are safe. Highly recommend!! read more

This place is a scam. DO NOT RENT A STORAGE UNIT HERE. They increased rent only 4 months in. Do yourself a favor and run the other way.

AVOID. THIS. PLACE. I have had a 10X30 storage unit here since 2014. They lure you in with a low rate, but are extremely aggressive with the rate increases. When I moves my stuff in, I was paying $280.00 per month. Now I am paying $401.00 per month. It is a total bait and switch. Extra Space is owned by an REIT (real estate investment trust). In that time, my rent has remained the same at $850.pp per month. This includes the landlord making improvements such as replacing appliances, installing wood laminate, installing tile floors, etc. An apartment has heat, A/C, electricity, water, etc.--a storage unit is bare with no amenities. So why is the rent on my storage unit going up, but the rent on my residence is not? If you follow the storage auction listings in the Washington Times printed edition, most of the auctions are from Extra Space, Public Storage, and Cube Smart. The corporate chains are owned by REITs that are snapping up locally owned storage facilities around the country. It appears their strategy is to lure you in with low rates, raise them aggressively until you cannot afford the payments, and then to auction off your property. You need to patronize locally owned storage facilities. The locally owned facility I used before coming here only raised my rates modestly in the four years I was with them (roughly equal to inflation). I had to move about six months after I moved my gear into this storage facility, which meant that I would have to put some extra stuff into my unit. They have a truck which they say they will let you use for free when you move in. I asked if I could use the truck to move some of my stuff into the unit I had been renting from them for about six months, and they said the truck was only available for initial move-ins. They would not let me use the truck to move some stuff into the unit I was renting from them! A total bait and switch. This place is absolutely unsuited to any kind of long-term storage. It took over a week and multiple phone calls, but my issue was resolved. The company has halted all rate increases due to the COVID-19 pandemic and I was able to get the rate increase reversed. It took a lot more effort than it should have to resolve this, so I am updating my rating to a 3. I will say that the person I spoke to on the phone with customer service today was kind, professional, and very helpful. read more

I'd review negative stars if I could. Extra space storage practices deceptive sales tactics. They don't TELL you when your looking for a unit that soon after renting a unit they will subject you to a price increase and another and another! When I asked the sales person they said "If he person doesn't ASK we don't bring it up" Take my word, DON'T do business with them!!! 2/12/18. I got lazy and didn't pull my stuff out and guess what?? I recently moved out of an Extra Space Storage unit in Burke, Virginia. We rented in 2014 for a reasonable rate, and when we recently left then for a less expensive company in 2022, the cost had increased threefold (nearly 200 percent). The initial rental rate was low, but they increased it by around 20 percent per year until it became completely unreasonable. When I left, they refused to refund the initial security deposit I had put down (calling it an "administrative fee," contrary to what was initially led to believe when I signed up). They also refused to refund the pro-rated amount for the extra unused days of my regular monthly payment. I consider them to be unsatisfactory in their business practices. Otherwise, the storage facility was adequate for our needs. Thus, let the buyer beware. This facility might be sufficient for short-term needs, but be sure to get in writing their policy about any security deposit. read more

Nice place, clean and modern, nice people. HOWEVER the sign on the front of the place says "ONE MONTH FREE" and in small print "see manager for details". After selecting a 5X5 unit that I thought that I was going to get one month free, i was only given a HALF MONTH FREE. Upon contacting one of the managers LuAnne (very nice by the way) she told me that on the sign there was "fine print" and to see the manager for details. I asked LuAnne if she would honor giving me a full month and not a half month for free, she refused and referred me to the "fine print". Also, BEWARE that Extra Storage Space requires that you bring in proof that your homeowners insurance covers your property in their space. I did not bring in my insurance verification until the next day of signing up for a space and they charged me $10 for their brand of insurance coverage. read more

Not a terrible facility and management is helpful. However, after 3 months they will hike your rates by 30-50% at 1 months notice. If you are planning on storing for longer than a month or two avoid at all cost!!! My rate went from $226 to $306 after 3 months and now I get to scramble to line up the resource to move out and across the street...very unpleasant. I was told it is because the market price went up, however the website is still advertising the same prices as they were 3 months ago. Staff, location and facilities are great. I do have an issue though. There is an insurance fee that is mandatory. If the fee is mandatory then include it in the rate quote. Not to is simply a bad policy. One must take at least the minimum insurance, $10/month. Extra Space Storage should include the basic insurance as part of the rental fee and then sell the higher value insurance as an add-on. If you don't have a choice than it is part of the rental and monthly cost. Plus at that rate for $2,000 in insurance is almost what I pay for a $15,000 rental policy on my daughters apartment. The Extra Space policy is a zero deductible though. I did just call my insurance agent and my homeowners policy extends to a my rental space (policy covers my personal contents at a rental facility). I just called the location and they now say I can have it waived if I get them evidence of such. read more

I have never been harassed or harangued more for a monthly payment in my adult life (55 years young) since becoming a customer of this facility. The customer service is horrible and it seems like every other month the rent is being raised. I would not recommend this facility to family or friends based on their staff and their money-grubbing tactics ... Geez! read more

I called 3 weeks in advance to tell the store when I was moving our stuff out. A note was entered into our account--confirmed by a rep from the national call center the day before we moved out. When my husband made a payment, four days before we moved out, he was charged the full amount. He didn't know to verbally tell the staff when he called that we were moving out to get the prorated amount. When he brought it up to the staff the day we moved out, and told them there was a note in the account they said, too bad you should have told us when you made your payment. Is it too hard for the staff to just ask a freaking question "will you be moving out in this next month? OR Just read the notes on the account?!?! ..... So we are now out $500+ because we didn't tell them we were moving out.... Oh wait, BUT WE DID!!! Stupid!!!! read more

I had to find another storage place after I discovered many of my storage items were ruined from water damage. I was very happy and surprised to see how much better the Burke Extra Space Storage facility was in comparison to my former storage facility. Extra Space Storage is clean and modern. The managers were very friendly and helpful. I feel safe to go alone to my storage unit unlike my previous facility. I never felt safe to go to my unit alone. I was very pleased with the location, size of unit, the way the facilities are maintained,the friendliness of staff, etc. I must agree with others that the rates get raised quite frequently. My space nearly doubled in cost in the year and a half I utilized it ($110.97 to $217.00). I understand rents increase but this is an unreasonably high increase. I would ask questions about rental fee increases prior to signing a contract. read more

Facility is nice but the customer service is terrible - they don't honor their specials at all and add on lots of extra charges. The truck is free only for a couple hours and then you start paying "fees" that add up to a couple hundred dollars. Then, when you go to finalize, all the extra fees for the unit add on, insurance, etc. This added almost $80 a month to my unit after I already had everything in it. When you have any questions they direct you to come in and refuse to help over the phone. I would never recommend them based on the people in the office. read more

I have been a customer of Extra Space Storage in Burke for almost five years. This facility is meticulously clean, very well lit, and extremely modern. They even have a brand new 15 foot moving truck that you can use for FREE to move your belongings! The owners/managers, Luann and Charles Fraser, are very professional and super nice folks. When I was going through some tough times earlier this year after losing my job, Luann worked with me on a payment plan to get me back on track. They didn't have to do this, but I am so grateful that they did. I think there are two primary types of customers who use off-site storage - those who have just run out of space - and those who are in a less than ideal situation financially/personally and need a safe haven to keep their belongings in during a transition in life. Extra Space Storage in Burke seems to really get this, and for that reason, I will always be a loyal customer!! read more
