I have used this storage for a couple years and once your year is up they raise your rental fees by 33% every 6 months (really 5 months). My unit is in a HORRIBLE side of town with a LITERAL crack house next door but the rate increases happen every 5 to six months. I went from paying $55 (insurance included) and now pay $71 because they brought my rate down slightly with hardships, but next Nov it will be over $120 for a 6x10 in an awful area. Be sure you don't plan on keeping your things longterm because they screw you. read more

Not impressed so far. This is the second time I've been here in the last few days to drop some stuff off. Can't get inside the gate. It's 7 pm. Keypads are locked down like if it's after 10pm. Called for help and they left a message for the manager to call me in 10-15 minutes. Been sitting here waiting... waiting... still waiting because I don't want to go back home and unload this stuff at my house. Who has time for this? Facility is nice. Lots of extra fees like you have to buy their special lock cause that's the only one they use. Still waiting... Sigh... they don't care because I've already paid them... Update - I went home and received a phone call from the manager. She was going to try to get it fixed. I went back by 30 minutes later and they were there trying to get it working. I went back home and unloaded the truck. Not sure if it's fixed yet. I returned the next day and one of the keypads was blank but it worked. I was able to get in and unload my stuff. Thank you. I had a great experience! Super friendly staff and other renters were great too. Loved the carts and the elevator.

Not impressed so far. When I arrived, another customer was waiting outside the locked door. I asked if he'd already called the phone number on the door instructions; he had and left a voicemail (the number forwards to the cell phone of the staff member on-site). I called; the phone was answered and immediately hung up. When Angel did return to the office, he already had customers with him. Now I've been standing in the lobby 25 minutes waiting to be helped. There is a line forming behind me. Oh wait, after 10 minutes she gave up and left. Just me waiting again. We chose this storage space because of it's ample 5-star Yelp reviews. It had a luxurious feeling to it, almost like a spaceship, with clean corridors and motion-activated lighting (so the place goes dark while not in use). And I thought the climate control was essential here in the Austin summer months-one of those qualities that justifies the higher price. We relied on this place when we had to move abruptly, and it gave us a comfortable 2-month cushion between locations. We brought our kids with us a couple of times, and they enjoyed a skateboard session or two. We all appreciated Sylvia and Angel, the managers, who gave us plenty of "space" to manage our stuff, even when we had overflowing furniture and bikes. read more

This location is exceptional. The interior and exterior are immaculate. The building is in a great location only 10 minutes from the center of Downtown Austin. The costs are VERY competitive. The area is well lit and surrounded by other well maintained buildings and businesses at a bustling intersection. The manager is beyond professional and friendly. He offered water to my entire moving crew both days we were on-site. He even called a few days after all of my things were moved in to check-in. This facility gets 5 stars for several reasons. It is immaculate! I didn't see even a speck of dirt anywhere on the property inside or out. Very well-kept. David did an excellent job leasing the units to me. He was so helpful, patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. My first visit to this facility was actually quite pleasant. John the assistant manager was very friendly and introduced himself as soon as I walked through the door. He walked me through the process and got my storage unit reserved immediately which was great. The facility is nice and clean and I was really impressed. Unfortunately, this all changed the next day when I returned and needed to return some packing boxes that I decided that I didn't need after all. Sylvia who is the store manager was rude and acted as if she didn't know how to do a return. As a store manager, shouldn't you know to do this at least? Anyhow, after she "figured" it out she acted like she did me a favor and told me she couldn't refund me and that I'd receive a check in the mail. Well, that was no problem as I had a month left in my current residence to receive the refund. My second visit which was a month later was worse. I show up at 1:45 pm to pay my bill but to only see a sign that displayed a clock in which you can adjust the hands to let people know when you'll be open again. The clock said that they'd be back at 2:05 pm. So, instead of driving all the way back home I decided to walk to the Goodwill from across the parking lot to bypass time. I quickly walk back promptly at 2:05 only to see that someone inside adjusted the hands on the clock to say that they won't return until 2:40. I pulled on the door to see if it was open but it was locked. I was livid. I stood there only to have Sylvia walk from a back room where she saw me on the monitor I guess and say through the glass door that they don't open until 2:40. I quickly corrected her and said that I had been waiting since 1:45 to go in to pay my bill since the time stated she would be back by 2:05. She huffed under her breath and opened the door and said it had to be quick because she needed to eat(not my problem you can't coordinate your lunch appropriately). She was rude during the whole time and so passive aggressive that I couldn't believe that she has a job talking to people this way. She would be rude one second then try to be nice only to have a sarcastic rude comment afterwards. Again, the facility is nice but I will not be going back due to her rude demeanor. She needs a lesson in customer service! read more

This is my second time using the South 1st Extra Space facilities and its been great both times. The staff has always been friendly and there for whatever we need... last year one of the employees even helped me clean up after dropping a glass on my hand when moving. Horrible experience with this place. Location on Slaughter and First only had 1 working elevator on the Sunday I was scheduled to move. People were fighting for the elevator, no maintenance on site to fix it. I went the day before to pay for storage since they are closed on Sundays and the manager did not mention there was only 1 working elevator. I had to put my stuff elsewhere because I was being charged by the hour from my movers. Extra space storage DID NOT issue a full refund and I have not even received the partial refund they reluctantly offered and it has been 2 weeks. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE!! read more

Today my boyfriend and I went to ask why they were raising the rent on his storage unit. The lady at the front desk told us that we were "paying a promotional rate and they raise it after a few months, that's how they get customers in, is to give them a low rate at first." When I asked why they didn't mention that they would be raising it after a few months when we signed up for our unit, she said that "they aren't allowed to mention it and if the customer was smart enough to ask, then they could tell them." I was really upset with the way she spoke to me. I had to ask her to stop because she was being very rude and disrespectful. She continued on telling us that customers who know the storage unit business and are smart enough to ask would know that the rent gets raised after a few months. Telling someone that they weren't smart enough to ask you if you would be raising rent randomly after several months is NO WAY to treat your customers. I left feeling very belittled. If I could give this place zero stars for customer service, I would. read more
