I haven't reviewed in a while but I have a new pledge to write at least two reviews a week. I think this is a great place to renew my budding restaurant reviewer career. I don't live anywhere near Odenton - I was just there for the day on business. After I finished my work I was headed for "the hell outta Odenton" towards 295 with a plan to see "Julie and Julia" and get a late dinner afterward. As soon as I saw this place - a roadside takeout barbecue shack so notably absent in my sanitized home county of Montgomery - I knew plans would be a changin'. Even if it meant Julia would have to wait for another night. Sometimes you just have a feeling about a place. I pulled into their parking lot and did a quick scan of Yelp Mobile reviews (thanks guys!). Yep, they provided proof that my suspicions of deliciousness were probably correct. I had the sandwich special, which was a pulled pork sandwich (you get to choose which kind), fries, a side and a drink for $8.99. Unbelievable! That's only about a dollar less than Wendy's, these days. When I saw that they offered not only the BBQ place staples but also collard greens and mac and cheese, I went through the roof of delight. I knew I was going to get the fries, having read on Yelp that they were fresh cut. And they were soooo good. Better than Five Guys. For my side though I was tempted by the mac and the greens, I decided on the beans because that is sort of my baseline evaluation of a BBQ place, how good their beans are. I was not disappointed. Very saucy with ground beef mixed in. Really a meal in themselves. The pulled pork was saucy, tender and delicious. And huge. Really, for me, this special would have been enough to split with another person. (And then I would have gotten a side of collards and a side of mac n cheese too!) The guys who work there were super nice. They even gave me a free sample of apple fritters because I was drooling over them on the menu. In all a wonderful diversion. I just ate in my car right in their parking lot. Then I headed to my Julia Child movie with a full stomach. I was really hungry and tried 2 sandwiches, pit beef and pork bbq. Both were very tasty. I'll be back to get some more in the future. Their pit sandwiches are sliced and bbq sandwiches are pulled. I ordered my pit beef medium. It was closer to medium well so I'll get it medium rare next time. Beef was still tender though. It doesn't seem like anything is added to the beef after it is sliced so it required condiments for me. I liked their horseradish but watch out. It has a kick and will sting your nose if you take a big enough bite of it. If you eat your pit beef with their horseradish it will overpower their other condiments: onions, hot sauce and spice shaker. Pork bbq is basically Expressway's version of bbq pulled pork sandwich. One of the better versions I've had. For $5~$6 per sandwich, they are good values too. read more

We've been ordering from Expressway Pit Beef for more than 4 years and have been mostly pleased with our take out. However, tonigh's roast beef rare sandwich smelled strange. I called and Julie got Jason, the Owner in the phone. I told him about my concern and was assured that he had cut the roast himself and the roast had no problem. I removed the first 3-4 slices and ate the sandwich. So far no problem. but I think the rare beef sat out too long- hence the odor- and want to convey my concern. We were exploring Odenton on a Sunday in April and stumbled upon this place, which looked just disreputable enough to be a gem. Adding to expectations was the high Yelp rating. Unfortunately it sucked bad. Don't be fooled - this is not a bbq place - they don't smoke meat or anything. This is a roast beef place. Also, this should really be a one star review, but I know people don't take them seriously. I ordered the pit beef sandwich with fries and "campfire beans." The gf had the pit turkey sandwich with fries and mac & cheese. We waited for THIRTY MINUTES to get our food, which is completely unacceptable at a take-out restaurant where you are standing around outside waiting for your food. In addition, as far as I could tell they didn't have to actually cook any food other than dunking a few fries in hot lard. Most of it was just slapping meat on bread. This place is disorganized. They don't take your name or give you a number or anything, so there is lots of confusion when it comes time to pick up your food. We saw another family just leave becaue they were so frustrated. And all of our containers of food had dirty saucy fingerprints all over them from the kitchen staff. I understand this is supposed to be a folksy place, but I mean wipe that off, c'mon. On the positive side, the namesake pit beef on the beef sandwich was pretty tasty, although nobody asked me how I wanted it (rare, etc.). I would say I got medium rare, which is probably what I would have ordered. Seriously, the beef is alright. However, everything else was terrible. After waiting for an eternity, we opened up our styrofoam containers to find plain sliced meat on some boring bun. The condiment station had onions and horseradish and not much else, and looked quite honestly like it was ripe for contamination with no lids on anything and people sticking their grubby hands in everything. Something was off about the Turkey. It was a translucent color that looked like the bird must have been sick or something. It had some smokey taste to it, but we couldn't finish it because there was something very strange and terrible about its consistency. The gf equated it to the sickening, gelatinous texture that you get on really cheap deli meat. I see a bunch of reviews raving about the fries. I love fries. Like any fry, these probably would have been better fresh out of the fryer, but they weren't. They were sort of room temperature and completely soggy. The bag was noticeably damp with grease when they handed it to us. I don't even think they had salt on them. Five Guys makes significantly better fries than this place. The sides were a joke. The mac & cheese was as bad as you can possibly imagine mac & cheese. The sauce was some fluorescent orange cheese whiz-style vomit that had congealed around overcooked macaroni. The whole mess had cemented itself together, so when you went to fork out a bite, the whole disgusting thing popped out like a mucus plug. It wasn't even tasty in the sickening, but comforting, way that Kraft blue box is. I don't know how you could make mac & cheese worse than this. The beans were had little tiny bits of unidentified meat product floating around in them. There was nothing remarkable about them. What else. Oh the bbq sauce I swear to god came straight out of some industrial tub of Sysco bbq sauce. I would never go back to this place. read more

I have eaten here a half dozen or so times. I always have enjoyed it. As a few reviewers have mentioned, their fries are really good and they give you a good portion size. A couple notable items that are undermentioned in other reviews: the pit ham is amazing!!! It is moist, thinly sliced, and has the slightest bit of that char-taste. The turkey is also really good for the same reasons. However they cook their meats, they just come out delicious (presumably in a pit...) I have had the pit beef come out drier than I would have liked once(ordered medium, came out very well), but it was still good. I do recommend some BBQ sauce on there. Other items I would put in the "good" category were the ribs and the wings. Both better than average. One night, we decided to mix it up and go for the meatloaf and chili. My wife liked the chili, but nothing life-changing. It was good, and about what you'd expect. The meatloaf was a little "meh." It was a good portion size, but it could have used a little bit of a top crust or some kind of tomato or BBQ slather on top to caramelize a bit. Again, it was fine, but nothing amazing. Pro tip: Try the ham, turkey, and the beef sandwiches. They're all delicious. I think the ham is way underrated. They could rename the place to Pit Ham, and I'd approve. Having been here many, many times I can now hands-down say they also have the best wings in the area. Order them; order them in bulk if you can. You won't be sorry with either the buffalo or the honey barbecue. The pit beef remains delectable, although I still prefer The Canopy by a slim margin on that count. If you're looking for BBQ and you're in the Odenton area, look no further. This place is good for what it offers and when the food is fresh, it is well worth the price. We usually enjoy the pulled pork and sometimes the sweet potato fries. The portions are large, so if you're going with your spouse or significant other, order just one side of fries. There isn't much of an ambiance, but hey...it's a BBQ place on the side of a freeway. Again, if you're in the area and you want some BBQ...stop on by! read more

The employees and atmosphere are nice with the outdoor seating and feel of a classic concessions sort of Bbq joint but its all just OK in my opinion. This pit beef stand has been here for as long as I can remember and it is a true jewel to the Odenton community. When you go here just know all seating is outdoors and you walk up to the window to order. That being said I always get the pit beef or the pulled pork with slaw on the top(since I like it the southern way) the sides I get is okra and mac and cheese. Food was great last time I ate here about 2 months ago, tonight it was not even edible had to throw it all in the trash which was a waste of meat and 60$. The ribs were so over cooked my dogs wouldn't touch it. My husbands brisket sandwich was so dry it was like cardboard. My sisters cheese burger was Burnt. French fries were cold, Mac and cheese was very bland. Only thing that was good was the onion rings and mozzarella sticks. Roadside stand. My kinda place. Everything I tried was good, but not great. I think the reason is that it is trying to do too much. The best joints do a few things well and leave it at that. The place is supposed to be about pitt beef, so I went with that. The sandwich was good, but not as tasty as some others around Baltimore. (the closer you get to Chaps the more that is expected) This does not quite have that taste. I don't know how the best beef places get it to be so flavorful, but Expressway falls a little short. The fries were OK as well, as were the wings. I did not try the snowballs but they looked great. (another Baltimore staple). What I loved was the Apple Fritters--unique, fried and excellent. I'd come back just for those. My advice would be to thin out the menu, work on the beef and there will be lines around the block. read more

Edited to add: I've gone back since then, and the meat has been fine. Sometimes they can be a little slow, other times the food comes up quickly. I guess it's a matter of who is working. So I added two stars for the improvement. ------ I love Pit Beef. My favorite is Pioneer but I also like Chap's and Canopy. When I moved from B'more to DC, I was bummed to be moving away from Pit Beef. (Why is it people from DC think Pit Beef is 'cue?) I was excited to discover Pit Beef closer to home. The first time I ate there I didn't register any opinion on my sandwich but I went again Friday night and there was a definite "off" smell to the meat. I ate it anyway, and haven't gotten sick, so it might have been me. I really had to scrape the bottom of the container of horseradish, so it might have been that, also. I had a healthier alternative of potato salad for a side, but I sampled my companion's fries and regretted not getting my own to dress with vinegar and Old Bay. He was also delighted to find corn fritters on the menu, which he's missed after Three Nines in Elkridge closed. Still, I could have hit it on an off night, and it is closer to DC than other pit beef places. I'll probably go back just to check, and if it's OK, I'll add some stars. read more

First and foremost, this is not a sit-down restaurant, but a food stand with a few outdoor tables. This is probably obvious, but I wasn't paying close attention, and thus was surprised when I got there and there was no indoor seating. I ordered a pit beef sandwich, apple fritters and a vanilla milkshake. This was my first pit beef sandwich, and I was not at all impressed. Being my first pit beef sandwich, I don't know if you're supposed to request or add toppings, but I was served a bunch of very dry, thinly-sliced beef on a bun with no sauce, toppings or garnish. It was dryer than a peanut-butter sandwich. I have to disagree with the review that says that they give you enough meat to make two sandwiches; it wasn't a small sandwich, but unless you have a tiny appetite, there won't be enough to share. The apple fritters weren't really what I was expecting, either. They most remind me of a McDonald's apple pie, only you get a bunch of small wedges slightly larger than your typical wedge fry. They were enjoyable, but certainly nothing I would go out of my way to have again. As for the milkshake? Disappointing. Thin and not at all rich. Again, not something I would go out of my way for, which is a shame, as the milkshake was what led me to try Expressway Pit Beef. And yes, it was expensive. Awful. I won't go back. My pit beef sandwich was dry, plain, and flavorless. The fries were greasy. Maybe they thought it was cute to serve them in brown paper bags so you could see all the grease that oozed off of the fries to the bag. My wife and I joked that at least the Cokes were good. For some reason, we had trouble finding this place using the GPS. It's next to the Ace Hardware. (Somehow, I feel like telling you that landmark makes it easier to find.) If you aren't ravenously hungry, try sharing one of the $9 meals with a companion rather than you both getting an entire meal. We took the BBQ home, but I doubt we'll warm it up and eat it. Service was friendly, fast, and patient while me and my bf pored over the menu (okay, it was really just me). Sweet tea was sweet without feeling sickly sweet, which I appreciate. The collard greens were flavorful and the right temperature--not too hot, not too cold. The macaroni was gooey and semi-flavorless like I like it (you know, like Furr's and Luby's?) The meat was fine; nothing to write home about. I think the pork is better than the beef. Fantastic fries! Crispy and plentiful. Minus one star for the four teenage skateboarding guys loitering around the tables, calling one another gay. :-/ Really put a damper on our meal (which was already quite damp because it was pouring rain). I'll be back to this place. Just hope the loitering teens aren't there. read more

Not one thing I ordered was good. Hot wings-rubbery and generic; Old bay wings-rubbery and not nearly enough old bay; "Homemade" mac and cheese-just gross; "Hand made" 1/2 lb burgers-overcooked, dry, and tasteless; Fries-greasy little potato chunks, not fries. One other comment about the burgers. I LOVE a good burger and I'm always looking for the best. I asked if their burgers were hand made and cooked to order. They answered "yes". Then they proceeded to burn the hell out of it. Extremely disappointing. One other thing. The only reason I stopped was to get fried oysters which were listed on their marquee on the side of the road...they didn't have any. I didn't try the pit beef, but, if everything I ordered sucked, there's no way I'm wasting another dime at this place. read more

The people who prepared the sandwich had very minimal BBQ sauce on the sandwich but it was appetizing because I finished it and I was hungry. Service is not slow; I had my order in less than 10 minutes. Little roadside joint in Odenton. Not bad, not great...you know, it's kinda in that middle of the road "go-there-again-if-you-have-no-other-option" zone. It's a tad pricey for a sandwich and fries, and the sides offered with the sandwich meals are more like shots of sides than actual side dishes. Be prepared to wait...went on a Friday night around 8:30 with only one group of two ahead of us and still waited a solid 20 minutes for two sandwiches. Food was tasty...the pit beef was tender and had some good flavor and the pulled pork was actually very good. The fries are, well...fries. Not much to write home about there. This place left a lot to be desired. The chicken I had was over cooked, like it was left over and reheated from the night before. My rainbow sno cone was just shaved ice with a lime syrup which was lacking in taste. My fries were very soggy and had no flavor. Mashed potatoes were okay at best. Service was good. read more

Whenever I come to visit Columbia, we always have to come here if we're ever craving BBQ. It can be easy to miss when driving. It just warms you up in the winter with their HUGE portions!! And during the summer, it's the perfect places to eat with a great view of the sunset. Workers there are friendly and really laid back--a great combination. read more
