Been to Baltimore/MD many times in the past. Somehow, I've never had pit beef. During this visit, we're staying in Odenton and ended up seeing Expressway Pit Beef on the way to our accommodations. We figured we might as well stop and try it. You place your order at the takeout window and they have several tables with umbrellas up front. The order taker asked me what I wanted on it. Told him it was my first pit beef so I want the works. He suggested onions and mayo. Ok... Then he gave me the expectation that my beef would come medium-rare. Perfect! I also ordered a side of fried shrooms. When I got my sandwich, it looked pretty hefty - a good amount of beef for $10! But it looked more well done - far from medium rare. Took a couple of bites and was underwhelmed. It was bland and under seasoned. I had to go up to the condiment bar to mix myself up some horsey sauce - mayo + horseradish. For a minimum of 18 years, I have been visiting this establishment, where I have had the pleasure of observing the owners, a charming couple, working behind the counter. Although I have not seen rhe owners lately, their staff is outstanding, demonstrating patience, kindness, and helpfulness while working efficiently. The Pit Beef Sandwich has been a consistent favorite of mine throughout the years, and their potato salad has maintained its distinct flavor and quality. These items are my regular choices. Additionally, I have tried their wings, which were excellent. They have some outdoor tables but this is primarily a carry out establishment. Today was the third time I've visited these folks and the first time I had their ribs (half rack). Previously, and today also got their pit beef, medium rare. I've read other negative reviews of their pit beef sandwiches but can't corroborate those. Mine have been tender, fresh, juicy, and generously portioned. Added my own horseradish, barbecue sauce and fixin's and I was a happy camper. Their ribs were a pleasant surprise. They cut them for you and they were completely delicious! Teal smoke flavor, meaty, basted on with their sauce. I might ask for them naked next time so I can add my own sauce from their condiment bar but I have zero complaints about them as they were. When I saw there was a pit beef so close to where I was working I was so excited. I love pit beef. But this establishment fell short. I ordered a rare pit beef and a full rack of baby backs. The pit beef I received was very dry for being rare. Other patrons stated that the pit beef was so juicy it ruined the bun, but not mine. My bun did not get soggy from the juices because there was no juiciness. The ribs had an artificial smoke? taste to them which was very different for my palette. Driving by Expressway nearly ever day, we hadn't thought much about stopping since I'll be honest it doesn't look like much- but curiosity got the better of us and we decided to stop in to see what they were offering. Surprised to discover they had a plethora of sandwich offerings, side dishes, and various meat platters- I was instantly drooling, wanting to try it all. We opted for splitting: The Bulldog-hot spicy sausage wrapped in beef, cheese, and sauteed peppers- a very LARGE packed sandwich- thick pieces of meat, with warm, fresh, well sauteed peppers-a very bold flavor burst in each bite. A hearty eat! Definitely recommend using the horseradish topping. A quality sandwich, at an unbelievably low price for the amount of meat you get packed on top. Hot wings (fried hard)-I did specifically ask for wings fried hard- but either they didn't remember or their hard isn't as hard as other wing joints- so the wings weren't as crispy as I expected, but they were still delicious- ample smothered hot sauce, juicy insides-they were large pieces of chicken- I would order again, and see if maybe they do fry harder 1/2 rack of ribs-I asked for dry ribs, since I'm not the biggest BBQ lover-a half rack equated to 6 large ribs- they were very thick cut ribs, that was all meat-not fatty, not greasy, just well grilled meat- high quality taste or juicy meat Side of Mac & Cheese & Collard Greens-reasonable prices- nothing special, just your average sides. We ended using the bun for leftover pulled pork meat-and taking the meat off to put in salads for leftover lunches. Well, we ended up with 4 lunch meals from the quantity of meat on this one sandwich! I would definitely order this as a lunch option in the future, split it up, and have multiple meals. Pit beef is one of my favorite places to eat in my area. I often stop by after church. It is simply affordable and delicious. Specifically the snowballs and milkshakes are the most delicious and affordable in the area. I ordered a vanilla milkshake, with a bacon cheeseburger and fries. The burger was delicious and juicy. With a perfect bun. They gave a generous helping of fries which were delicious paired with ketchup. Unfortunately I had to get swiss cheese on my burger cause they didn't have cheddar. I definitely ordered the wrong thing - 4 piece rib. No flavor. It tasted boiled with some sauce on it. They were somewhat tender but were much much better after I took them home, added some salt and gave them another hour in the oven. I have driven past this place on many occasions. I felt it was time to go in. When I did I was lost on what I wanted because of the options. The lady before me was speaking to the employees on a personal level, very nice nothing bad. It's a very local spot. As soon as I get up there I'm still lost. So I ask a few questions and they are very quick and nice. I even apologize for not knowing and have so many questions. Next they asked how I wanted it which I've never been asked when ordering a pit beef sandwich so I said the way majority order or you recommend it being served. Our sausage which was supposed to be spice didnt have any spice or special taste outside of a standard sausage youd get from the grocery store. The sandwich I had this go-around was served at medium temperature with a soft Kaiser roll. The meat was very flavorful without a piece of fat to be found. Make sure to get an order of French Fries, as these are some of the best around. The condiment bar is also self-serve, so you don't have to worry about going back to the counter to harass the staff for more onions, sauce, etc.. I also found the staff to be friendly and courteous. Loved the food, but we both agree it was too expensive. We came for lunch quite a few times, but probably wont be back for a bit since its winter time now. Might want to consider changing the price point to encourage more repeat customers. Also, maybe make a unique app/side dish that goes well with the bbq and smoked meats. Had not eaten here in a few years and some of the negative reviews concerned me that it was no longer a good place to go. Maybe others just came on a bad day, but we were very happy with our order. We had a large group order of ribs, pit beef, bbq pork, and sides.
