I usually go to this spot when craving soul food. Usually order the same thing: fried whiting, yams and collards. Today I ordered the fried wing dinner. The menu noted that the price was 16.49. When the young man brought me my food, I asked him to let me speak to the manager as she was the person who took my order. She came over and asked what was the problem. I pointed out that the menu noted the dinner was $16.49 and she had charged me $19.99- which was $3.50 more. She asked where did the menu say this price. I showed her the overhead marquee and she responded that they have two and the wrong one was up. I didn't argue- although I could have. Instead I told her she might want to make sure she update the marquee if she wasn't going to honor the price. While there are a lot of young people who work here- the manager wasn't- thus her reply was not anchored in inexperience. I was disappointed that she didn't offer to make it right or acknowledge that it was their error. That's poor customer service. I love this spot. I only wish they would move to Howard County closer to me. I also wish they would expand to a sit down restaurant but the model and location works for business and I and happy for them. The food was amazing. I ordered a turkey wing dinner with collard greens and yams and banana pudding for dessert. My wings were tender, flavorful and seasoned just right. The sides and the dessert were delicious. Everyone that assisted me was polite and courteous. Haven't been here in a while from a previous incident but decided to give it a try again. Staff was a little friendly but made some good recommendations and gave honest opinions. I decided to go with the salmon caesar salad and a side of mac & cheese. Salad comes with a roll or cornbread. I choose cornbread. Mac and cheese was flavorful and definitely had plenty of cheese. Here's a breakdown of my plate: Candied Yams - 10/10 Fresh, tender, and perfectly sweet. These were hands-down one of my favorites! Mac & Cheese - 5/10 Unfortunately, a letdown. The cheese tasted very generic and lacked that rich, homemade flavor. Not nearly creamy or cheesy enough. Fried Chicken - 10/10 Golden, crispy, and seasoned just right. I ordered the catfish dinner with hush puppies, mac & cheese and cornbread. All were delicious as expected. Unfortunately, I also ordered the chocolate cake, which I should have avoided since the dessert case was all fogged over (a clear sign that it was not functioning properly in maintaining the desserts cold). The cake tasted a little funny as the one side of the icing was hot, otherwise it was decent. Though two hours later I began throwing up the cake from food poisoning. So, unfortunately the cake had gone bad. Would I come here again, YES! The cooked food is good and homemade. Would I order dessert, absolutely NOT! She found this place and hands down a good choice. We ordered three entrees. All three was great. Also the place is clean and the people there was very nice and helpful. Service was great, friendly and patient as we picked our selections. We all ordered the fried chicken leg quarter meal. I ordered the smothered turkey wings, collard greens, cabbage, peach cobbler and a side of candied yams. The yams mixed with the collard greens and turkey wings were amazing!!! The turkey wings fell off the bone and it was absolutely mouthwatering! Wow! It was a heavy meal so I didn't finish it until the next day and it was also a million times better! Don't expect to come to a public establishment and get the same taste that your grandmother did in her kitchen. If you're looking for that go cook your own damn food! I ordered the barbecue beef ribs and they were very delightful. The meat was tender and juicy. The barbecue sauce was to my liking. I also ordered the mac & cheese, which is a little heavy on the cheese and I love that about this place. The candied yams were plenty sweet and the kind of consistency that I like. I was Originally upset about the 15/20'minute wait but the food was prepared to order. The whiting was perfectly seasoned. The candid yams were smack your momma good. The greens were a little to stimmy for me but still delicous non the less. The hush puppies were great to me as well. I don't like corn inside my hush puppies and these didn't have it which was a pleasant surprise for me. My wife ordered the Turkey wings and the juicy meat just slid off the bones. She loved that they were over a bed of rice. Definitely a plus. The Mac and cheese was good as well. Honestly, where can you get pig feet around here?? And when you do it's either bbq'd or pickled. This was neither...it was so refreshing and finger licking good. I got rice and candied yams. Rice was basic and yams were subpar. What made them candied?? 3/5 (pig feet carried this) Bbq wing dinner - Wings were soft....baked? Had to be. It was drowned in basic bbq sauce. By far the worst. Placed an office order of over $500 thru Door dash, driver wanted to charge $60 for delivery. They forgot 1 platter of food and we still had to go pick up the drinks and 3 more platters that they forgot to bring. To support the black owned business and to get treated like that is unheard of. I had a wonderful time at Southern Blues this evening. I remember wanting this place to open up so bad. Partially bc I was aware of their other location in Baltimore, although I had never been. I think the fact that I follow them on IG might've played a part too but whatever the reason, it seemed like the grand opening to this location, close to my home, took forever. When they finally arrived, the craziest thing happened, I started cooking more so I don't frequent them as much as I anticipated I would, but that has nothing to do with the food. Everything I've gotten at this location - Chicken Wings, fried catfish, Turkey wings, Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens, Yams, Seafood Salad - have all been delicious and it's the perfect soul food for those days when you just don't feel like cooking. If I could point out one area that could use a little improvement, I would say, it'd be the customer service. It's not that the staff is bad or anything, they're absolutely not, but sometimes it's like you almost have to make the register staff speak and it's hardly ever warm, inviting or with a smile. It was blackened with good flavor but slightly on the dry side. I still enjoyed it but wish it had a little more moisture to it. The sides were all good with flavor except I have a problem with canned greenbeans. Don't get me wrong the greenbeans had good flavor but I would have preferred them to be fresh or the frozen one's would have been acceptable. The yams was perfect!! The collard greens were delicious. Well seasoned and the gravy turkey wings were good as well. They give you large portions so this was definitely two meals. I placed my order on line and it was ready for pickup upon arrival. I can't rate the dining in experience although they have plenty of booths available and there was others dining in as well. Overall rating 3.5 and I definitely would return but would not get the greenbeans as one of my sides, at least my order upon checking it was accurate.
