I was catching up with a friend and decided to meet at this random Black-owned spot--and it turned out to be Bingo-shots night. The bar seating was full, with a few other guests scattered around, but the space itself was open and very roomy. Best part...YOU CAN SMOKE!! We ordered food and drinks from the beautiful bartender and host Leah, and about 20 minutes later, we were told they'd be closing early. We wrapped up pretty quickly and were getting ready to head out when we learned that the owner, Yancey, was actually closing early to take both staff and customers to another Black-owned bar in Olney that doesn't get much traffic on Wednesday nights. We decided to join, and I'm glad we did. When we arrived, the owner of 5 Sisters generously covered our first round of drinks. Overall, it turned into a really fun and unexpected night. Barely anyone in there and service blah. I ventured here with a friend to celebrate another friend's birthday. I was warned ahead of time that the drinks were horrible so I adjusted accordingly. They have a good open space and they were hosting the Thursday night football game. There's an area that has a big screen television and some lounge chairs all mostly facing the television throughout that half of the restaurant. They have a very limited menu and I can appreciate that however I did ask if my food was going to be freshly prepared or if it had already been cooked and was sitting under warmers. I was informed that it would be freshly made and I didn't feel like that was untruthful because it was just some fried fish and french fries which you can just throw in some grease. Yeah, nah. It was at the very beginning of warm. That's not hard to make some fresh fish and some fresh hot crispy french fries. But for $10, okay. I was asked to pay immediately after I ordered and thought that this was awkward as well but, okay. If the food was hot it would have been great. The fish was seasoned and I love a crinkle cut french fry. When my server brought the food to me they were about to sit it in my lap instead of putting it on the table in front of me. I really understand now the low score. My second time. First time was months ago but we barely stayed an hour just went because of some margarita deal. Today I came based on a flyer. A buffer that was non existent and when asked about it, the bartender said the buffet was just unlimited fish and chips. Food: Chicken tenders and old bay wings and onion rings delicious! Only complaint was I wanted to order another set of wings they were so good, but asked if I could pay an up charge just for flats (normally most business will accommodate for a cost). She said the cook said no that he wasn't going to just pick out flats. I still ordered another 5 anyways. Service: slow! Both last time and this time. Both times place was empty I could count number of people on tow hands. Last time I only stayed an hour, due to slow service and lack of people I left. This time I stayed for 2.5 hrs and still empty and service slow. Drinks: are strong and they have good happy hour prices. Parking: plentiful because it's a plaza Facilities: lighting that flickered in and off at the bar not intentional, broken bar chairs had to warn others not to sit, toilets damaged, overall upkeep and cleanliness is not good. Music: I can't complain. Every song was my Jam either by the DJ or the band this was on both occasions. Side note. BLACK OWNED BUSINESS ALERT FOOD: I didn't have any so this isn't based on that. SERVICE: I was extremely impressed by the hookah vendors. AMBIANCE: It's a nice spot. I saw Black people of all ages having a great time. The bathroom was clean and that matters to me. There was adequate seating and nice staging which matters when looking to rent a space. This neighborhood spot is worth a try, I've been here twice on GoGo night and both were LIVE. The drinks are perfectly poured and very inexpensive and strong. The menu is simple and seasoned to a fried perfection - to soak up the liquor. You can't go wrong with the catfish, shrimp, wings, or whitening. The service is served up with smiles and sexuality. Plenty of TVs to catch the game, and hookah. There are always birthdays on birthdays but always fun, ratchet, and the looks are always fabulous! Went here last night to wee a band. The A/C wasn't on. It was miserable. The greedy promoters made sure that you could only sit if you PAID for a seat. The bathroom was clean. There aren't enough bartenders so you will stand in line for at least 30 minutes waiting to have your order taken. It's a shame that a staple in the D.C. I'm shocked this place is open to the public. I went on 2/23 for Happy Hour and to listen to a go go band with a friend. This place is dirty, food is horrible and drinks seemed water down. You had to pay for a table that was about to fall apart. I am definitely contacting the health department and proper authorities to report numerous violations. We walked in and were the only people , she asked us to sit anywhere we wanted. She brought us the menu and just stood there waiting on us to order . It was not only rude but I felt rushed to order . So I ordered the okra with fufu and my friend order the egussi..She comes back to inform me they ran out of okra, the funny thing is she then tells me she is gonna order me some veggies with fufu. I looked at her and I told her, do you mind if I order my own food? Lol..I mean, I understand we are African and she may think she is helping me but it's a big no. I didnt ask for a recommendation. I eat African food ( Cameroonian, Liberian , Nigerian) so I know what each dishes are! She brings back the menu and is upset and looked at me and say "my sister I was trying to help" ummm no u ordering for me isnt helping cause u have no idea what I have a taste for I finally settle just for the jollof rice with fish (tilapia) . The egussi has no flavor and was so much oil My jollof rice was ok, had better before that u could taste the flavor of fresh herbs not just tomato sauce. The fish was ok, as u can see in my pic it was so much oil. The last straw was me ordering just a pineapple juice but the bartender just decided to bring me pineapple and cranberry juice. I looked at the menu and couldn't find a meal to order so I settled with a side of oxtails for 10 dollars. When he rung me up he charged me 12 buck but I didn't say anything. The presentation was comical to say the least and the taste was not good. It tasted old. They placed peas and loose shrimp on top of the jollof rice, which made it "seafood rice". You can't screw up seafood jollof rice. The plantain was okay to say the least. The Okra soup was despicable!! It was full of red oil, and had the tiniest of Okra. This is a restaurant that is very content with being mediocre. They have "order online" when you cannot in fact order online. You will still come in & have to order then wait 30 minutes + for food. The place is clean, organized and neat, but the food is horrible. The prices don't reflect 20% of what one gets. As an African male, I can cook far better. Take friends to the place to patronize and support my sisters. But oh boy, what a disaster both occasions. Probably the worst African food experience my wife and I have ever had. We got served our food and we immediately knew it was bad having had African food before. Things tasted spoiled. Our Fufu was cold. We tried to just ask for a check and leave playing it off like we had to get going cause of our daughter knowing dang well we were throwing the food out when we left. Got bombarded by questions by people running the place when we did. Insisted we still sit, etc. Then they at least insist they pack the food up for us. I visited this place because they were advertising the heck out of it on facebook so I thought I would give it a try. It was a Sunday and I went with my mother. I must say that this place had MANY problems with it. 1. (The main reason I visited ) THE FOOD. I ordered cassava leaf stew and my mother ordered egusi stew with Jollof rice. I must say that the chef didn't even try when making this. It was nothing but oil. I even asked, "where was the cassava leaves that was suppose to be in there" I guess they didn't have time for that. Then they decided to pack the stew with super amounts of salt. 2. The customer service. I would suggest to management to go and train your servers and bar attenders on the correct way to wait on your guests. Our server was rude, did not have knowledge of the food and had a super attitude. They then went to proceed to wait on another party that came in AFTER us. The party also got their food before us. lol We waited for almost an hour before we got our food. This was so irritating. The waitress didn't even check on us. I had to go find her. I think she was much more interested in looking cute for the guys that came in then to do her job. This is sad! 3. The restaurant. They have so much space however the place just looks basic. Not much art or anything to look at. They could do so much more for this place. 4. The price. The only thing I'm going to say is that they are SO expensive. If you are planning on visiting, then get ready to spend your phone bill there. All in all, If I were you, I would avoid that place at all costs, but if you plan on venturing there, AVOID the cassava leaf stew and Egusi and plan on ordering takeout so you don't have to take too much time to deal with their rude staff.
