It was just jollof rice so it might not have been as difficult if it had been a main entree but nonetheless I was able to pick it up that evening but ordering over the phone that day of. I had never been into that shopping center before so it was interesting to see the other businesses sharing the space. I walked in about 10 minutes before they close however I called to inform them I was on my way and was quickly greeted. I didn't know stew came with jolloff rice and when I was offered it, I declined. When the young lady in the back told me it comes with it, I then said oh yes, of course. They called it stew so I thought it was a bowl of soup lol. Turns out, you actually put it over the jollof rice and Game Changer! The jolloff wasn't overly powered with flavor or vegetables mixed within but I'm guessing that's what the stew is for. I definitely would order her catering trays from them if I need them in the future. I couldn't get enough of that rice and had to stop myself from eating it. I did request some rice because I figure if I ever do get the courage to eat it, the rice will help. Everything is a-la-carte and if you don't know to order something, you just have a very sad meal. The menu hints at telling you, you should order all 3 parts but you could expect your stew to have something in it but it will not. Your stew is a soup or better yet a broth of sorts. You have to also order a starch and a protein unless of course you only want the blazing hot broth. Not only was it spicy, it was scolding hot which amplifies the spice. Once I got it home and warmed it up the next day, I added some honey to it to cut the heat and it worked perfectly. I'm sure it did however change the intended taste but if the intended taste is fire, that's not my cup of tea. Also, there wasn't a lot of meat on the things that I ordered but the "beef" was good. I tried the combo but that had a little piece of beef and cow foot which is a type of fat that you have to bite off the bone and then something that was similar in texture to the fat on the cow feet but I think it was ... Very Unprofessional. The Owners son Bolu is bad for business and they have him handling business…read morematters. He's a young out of control hot head. I paid for their event space for my bday party and the night before my party he told me there was a outage. He told me that it wasn't getting fixed until the next day a couple hours before my event and he wasn't sure. It didn't make sense to me. He rebooted somewhere else for half of the money I paid him and less time than I was contracted for. I paid for my event from 10pm to 2am. And when I was in the new event space that owner came n told me Bolu only paid for up to 1am. I was so furious because I had to pay $150 extra to have my event to 2am. And when I spoke to him about it after my event he cusses me out and called me names. I went to tito spice haven to speak to the owner, his parents and no one was there. The business is CLOSED. Thats when I realized that they didn't have the business anymore in laurel. And instead of telling me that, he rebooted my event somewhere else 31 min away, I lived 7 min for tito spice haven. Very Bad for business and I see why they are closed down. ​This is the worst experience I've ever had and I've never felt so disrespected in my life. He robbed me, lied to me and cheated me. No wonder they are Closed down. And he never gave me back the extra 150 I was conned into paying for my event that I already paid for. They are Theifs!

We went during Maryland Restaurant Week, so I was definitely interested in seeing what brunch at a spot I already knew would be like. The brunch had PLENTY of choices! African staples like jollof rice, suya, plantains, etc., mixed in with American breakfast favorites like pancakes, waffles, scrambled eggs, bacon and chicken wings. So whether you wanted an African plate, a traditional breakfast plate or a little bit of BOTH, you had options. Now, that first round of food was GOOD...but COLD. And I mean food that would've been hitting if it had just been hot! We mentioned it and asked if they could replenish some of the items, which they did. That second round was MUCH better. Fresh, hot and definitely more of what I expected. I appreciated that they corrected it when we brought it to their attention. The restaurant was clean, and the décor was beautiful. I've always appreciated how Swahili Village showcases the beauty of Africa throughout the space, but Kenya in particular is beautifully represented. The cultural touches really add something special to the atmosphere. Now...the service. Everyone was nice, but multitasking was definitely a struggle. We constantly had to ask someone to find our waitress. Basic things were being missed. Like ma'am...PLEASE pour us some more water!!!! It appeared that our waitress was training, which I can understand, but there still should have been someone making sure the table was being taken care of while she learned. Then came the discount situation. As part of Maryland Restaurant Week, I found a promotion online stating 20% off the meal. However, when it was time to actually apply it, the manager became very particular about which items qualified instead of applying the discount to the entire meal as the promotion appeared to state. Then there's already an automatic 18% service charge, followed by the request for an additional tip. With the level of service we received...that wasn't exactly sitting well with me. Then MORE back-and-forth. The Rosé Brunch apparently included complimentary rosé champagne because my friend was wearing red. Cute idea...except neither one of us drinks. So we asked if we could substitute a mocktail instead. Our waitress said, "Sure!" Perfect. Well...apparently NOT. ‍ That somehow turned into a no, followed by a whole bunch of word salad explaining why they couldn't do what we'd already been told they could do. Between our waitress, the waitress training her and the manager, it became way too much semantics, explaining and excuses. At some point, I don't need another explanation. I just want consistency and good service. I even told my friend that Swahili Village has received Michelin recognition, so my expectations were naturally a little higher. But THIS particular Sunday brunch experience? It didn't feel like that level of experience at all. The food selection was there. The beautiful African/Kenyan décor was there. And once the food was replenished and came out hot, the food was GOOD. The brunch concept definitely has potential, especially if this is something new they're building. But the service, communication and all that unnecessary back-and-forth really took away from what should have been an enjoyable Restaurant Week brunch. I've had enough previous experiences here to know what Swahili Village can offer. Unfortunately, brunch still has some work to do.
