First time trying this chain and I think it's okay. There's one vegetarian option--curried chickpeas and they're great. However, the veg toppings are largely unseasoned and when I was there they didn't have any hot sauce! What a bummer for a "Caribbean-inspired" restaurant. It's a fast casual spot so service is not critical but also not bad. The space is clean and so are the bathrooms. Ample outdoor seating with a grassy view. Freshly fried, super crispy, and packed with flavor. We ordered them with the Angry Mumbo sauce and then asked for the pepper sauce on the side. That pepper sauce had us sweating like we just ran 3 miles in the Marine Corps parking lot but the flavor was worth every drop. While the wings were cooking we grabbed some beef patties, and man... instant nostalgia. If you grew up around Caribbean spots you know exactly what I'm talking about. And the mac & cheese? This is my second time here the first time was amazing. The first time the staff there were jamaican. I went for the second time on Saturday, September 27, 2026. It was almost 5:00 pm. I had a couple friends meet me there. We decided to eat there. There was 2 Hispanic women at the front serving food and a Hispanic male in the back cooking. While he was cooking he was eating the food. Then the heavier set woman at the front was scooping food from the container and licking it off her hand over and over again. When she realized that I saw her and was disgusted by the cross contamination going on, she grabbed 1 glove and put it on. The cook came out and dumped more meat on top of the cross contaminated meat. When we addressed the contamination issue the smaller Hispanic woman lied and said they werent serving that to customers. The lady was asked to wash her hands more than 5 times before she went begrudgingly to rinse her hand not wash but rinse. She was upset because she was asked to wash her hands. It was 3 of us who visited this location because I convinced my 2 friends. Two of us jamaican and the other is from Trinidad. Again the only reason she rinsed her hand is because I pointed to my friend who could report her and have the restaurant violated through the health department. The food I had was good but I didn't eat my leftovers because of what I witnessed inside the establishment. The other thing is that they are still waiting on a liquor license. They didn't know what time the bartender would arrive to open the bar to make mocktails. Finally tried this location. I've been to the one in Silver Spring years ago when they first opened. Didn't really feel the need to return. I placed an online order for the quarter jerk chicken with a side of plantains and rice and peas. I was brave and got their hottest sauce on the side (angry angry). I love the angry jerk! I typically do not like Caribbean food, but this is so good it feels naughty. The chicken is juicy, the Mac and cheese is perfectly cheesed, and don't even get me going on the plantains. The plantains are the best I've ever had. We'd been wanting to try Angry Jerk since we saw it was coming to Merriweather. We visit the Kyo Matcha and other restaurants there from time to time. We came for dinner after a run around Lake Kittamaqundi so we had an appetite. We both ordered bowls although I wanted a jerk chicken entree but they were out of bone in jerk chicken. The server loaded our bowls with all the fixings, which we greatly appreciated. My wife's favorite loved that it was clean inside. I decided to try this place out while in the area, and I'm really glad I did--it was one of the better lunches I've had in a while. The Angry Jerk is one of those "DIY" lunch places, like a Chipotle but with Caribbean ingredients. You can build a taco or a bowl. I went with a bowl: brown rice and shredded oxtail. After the second time I asked the guy behind the counter, "Do you think this would be good with that?" he sighed (audibly) and said, "Do you just want me to make it for you?" I said, "Yes, please." I ended up with fried plantains, sweet potato, pickled onions, and a scotch bonnet pepper sauce (he did warn me, and put it on the side). Real talk: I hate the DIY model. I go to a restaurant to order lunch, not to assemble a puzzle and hope it tastes good. Apparently I'm not alone, and I really appreciated that the guy behind the counter just took over and made it work. The oxtail itself was excellent. Other reviewers are right: it doesn't really taste like traditional oxtail I've had elsewhere--and if it turned out to be another cut of beef, I wouldn't be shocked--but it was good. Rich, flavorful, shredded just right. Now let's talk about that scotch bonnet sauce. I dabbed a little onto the oxtail. Flavor-wise? It elevated everything. For about 0.38 seconds. Then the heat kicked in, and all that was left in the seat was a Joshua-shaped pile of ash. D'oh. The plantains were great. The vegetables were all solid. The Angry Jerk has finally opened! I had been waiting for this for quite some time. Excited to have a new restaurant added to Merriweather. The restaurant is spacious, well lit, and has plenty of seating. The set up is similar to a chipotle, where you have cafeteria style ordering. The menu has variety of Caribbean options that you get either as a bowl or tacos. I grabbed a bowl with a base of rice & peas, cabbage, curry chicken, and jerk cauliflower. My overall thoughts were that the food was just ok. It wasn't anything that I haven't had from other similar Caribbean restaurants. I will say, the jerk cauliflower was a nice touch. The other issue I had was the portion size of the protein option. For $17 I would have like a bit more of the curry chicken. There are tons of options for sides and toppings to personalize your meal the way you like to. I think the pricing is fair for the quality and serving size you get here. There is a small bar with a couple of beers on tap, indoor seating, and 4 small outdoor tables. I had a jerk chicken bowl and my partner had jerk shrimp. We both enjoyed the chow mein base, our protein, and all of our toppings, especially the cauliflower and the plantains. I'm already looking forward to when we return. We go to Colorburst weekly. We love all of the restaurants there, but we've been talking about how they need a fast casual spot and Angry Jerk definitely filled that need. I have been having issues with my taste buds for awhile now due to some medications so I have been trying different types of cuisines to see what hits. So we tried a new place called the Angry Jerk. It will be a year in November since they have opened. It is kind of like a Chipotle style but with the Caribbean flavor and offering. Now my taste buds are in no shape to be an accurate judge of anything these days so take that with a grain of salt. We tried several types including a bowl with ox tail and a platter with half a chicken. Everything was good but the chicken was a little on the dry side for me. It could just have been the breast but I could not fully embrace the texture. My wife loved their green sauce and enjoyed it very much as she likes her meat like her humor-dry. But then, she tasted my Angry Angry sauce and let me tell you, if you can handle the heat, the flavor is crazy. She started mixing the 2 sauces and couldn't stop talking about it. Yeah it was that good. The service was great and we had a terrific time. The only real disappointment was they were not ready to serve alcohol. Red Stripe looked like they were ready but hopefully by next visit, my taste buds as well as the alcohol situation is resolved. We did try some island sodas and they were delicious. My husband and I have come in at least 4 times to request beef patties, even calling ahead, only for there to be a 25 minute wait for a carry out which is unfortunate because the 2 times they actually did have beef patties available they were delicious! Further, for $30 the oxtail was way too fatty with no gravy. I dont mind fatty oxtail to a certain extent but there should be a much larger portion considering how little meat there is on the bone and how much is cost. When I saw this place was finally open I was super excited because I love Caribbean food. The atmosphere was quite clean and spacious. The food however, was a little disappointing. I ordered the jerk chicken & salmon entrees. Each entree comes with two sides. My salmon was cooked halfway... :( didn't realize until I was home eating it and half way towards the center I realized how undercooked it was. I mean, good thing I like sushi...? And thank goodness the jerk chicken was cooked all the way through, or else this would be a much different review. Then he comes back out and looks like he apparently forgot,says "what the f**" and goes back and then comes back nonchalantly (it's as if he's there but not) and says-while looking at something which isn't me- that it'll be about an hour and a half. We stumbled into this restaurant in the heart of Merriweather on one of the family movie nights earlier in the Fall so there were a lot of people outside. We waited ~45 minutes for food which looks like a Jamaican Chipotle-style assembly line. Either their food always takes this long or they were just straight not prepared for the rush. I felt bad for some of the workers because it clearly wasn't their fault but man were they trying. Looking across, we see customers that have been waiting even longer than us for takeout and you could see the energy of the place die out. An underrepresented cuisine that should be experienced. The Angry Jerk is a cafeteria style bar and restaurant. You walk to the counter, order your meal, then sit in 4-person tables until someone brings your food or calls for you to pick up (I've experienced both depending on how busy the restaurant is). The food is Jamaican, with a focus on heavily seasoned meats and fish. For my first visit, I sampled their half chicken and stewed chicken for my main courses with sides of rice & peas, yucca fries, plantains, and steamed cabbage. The half chicken was a rotisserie cooked chicken covered in jerk spices. The meat was flavorful but a bit dry, though applying some of their sauces helped add some needed moisture. The chicken is a perfect vessel for their large number of sauces. The stewed chicken lacked the spice, but was heavy in a rich stew and bursting with juice. They paired well with the sides. The rice & peas, which is the Jamaican way of calling rice and beans is a great filler, catching all the sauces, juices, and seasonings from the other dishes and changing flavor over the course of the meal. It's extremely hearty and filling. The plantains were not as sweet as I expected and were more starchy, but went quite well with their sweet sauce. The yucca fries were my favorite side, having a crispy outside and fluffy inside while coated in a slightly spicy seasoning. It was perfect for dipping into the plethora of sauces. The steamed cabbage was...well it's steamed cabbage. I wouldn't recommend it unless you absolutely need something green and leafy to help digest the otherwise extremely heavy meal. The Angry Jerk is still a very new establishment and is suffering from some missing amenities. I came in when it was raining and there was no rug near the entrance to catch the water from dripping patrons, leaving for a slippery floor. Sauces play a huge part in their food, but they give you incredibly small cups of sauce. You can ask for more, but going up to order more constantly ruins the overall experience. Having bottles of their sauces on each table and larger cups for take-out orders would make each meal much better. And finally, I am no expert on Jamaican cuisine, but I expected the food to be much spicier. With a name like the Angry Jerk and a logo showing three angry scotch bonnet peppers, I was hoping to leave with a numbed tongue. The only thing that got close was their Angry Angry sauce, their signature super hot sauce, which was delicious and spicy, but I felt it was more of a "mid" level spicy and not an authentic Jamaican spicy. I understand wanting to appeal to a larger customer base, but having selectable spice levels for each dish ranging from "Non-Spicy" to "True Jamaican Heat" would be better. Columbia has a lot of amazing Asian restaurants but lacking foods from the Caribbean. I want to experience more of what the Angry Jerk has to offer.
