Unless you are a local or someone's giving you the 411 on this place, you'd probably never find it. It is the best BBQ in the Washington area. It is located between the 7 11 and Ace Hardware. It is a small shack take out place that also offers ice cream and snowballs, seasonally, in the building behind them. They have several outside tables set up but it is a window order take out joint. They are closed on Sundays and open at 11 am all other days. Closing time depends on season. Now to the good stuff. I have never had anything from here I did not like. But my go to item, Pork BBQ, is the reason I go back. It is tender, pulled BBQ served on an awesome roll. My son loves their pit turkey. Piled high and beautifully flavored. They have several specials for individuals or family meals. Their fries are fresh cut. They offer ribs , wings, BBQ chicken and about any BBQ side item you can think of. The pulled pork was floating in BBQ sauce so you couldn't taste the pork at all. Milkshake tasted like refrozen or at least freezer burnt ice cream and sour. The three teenagers took their sweet time (50 minutes) and it cost $42 for only enough food for 2 people. Second time I tried this place. First time I ate here pit beef was good. Won't go back. I've been coming here for years! This is the one place that did their buffalo wings the right way! The ribs are good too, to my surprise...I come from family that is from the south...so I know good ribs.However last night I went to get my buffalo wings and was very disappointed in the wings. I had the pork bbq sandwich, fries and mac n cheese. Food was good, but nothing to rave about. The sandwich had a generous portion of meat which I appreciated, but definitely get some of their bbq sauce to go with it. Fries were good - cut from fresh potatoes and hot. I was pretty excited to check this place out as my first taste of 'pit' food. Especially since this place has been under my nose for half my life and I didn't know it. I was pretty disappointed. The girl working there taking orders was nice but not too energetic and she wasn't listening as I had to repeat what I wanted. Eh, forgivable. I got a 'single person meal' with a pit beef sandwich cooked medium rare. It comes w fries, another side (I got potato salad) and a medium drink. I also got a small chocolate milkshake. $13, a bit much but I guess I got a decent amount of food/drink stuff. The sandwich was piled high with meat! The roll was too thick and not anything to write home about. I added some ketchup, mayo & onions on top. I don't know how you'd eat it without toppings because the meat was sadly not incredibly flavorful. :( Biggest disappointment. I was expecting to be wowed but was not in the least. I was greeted by a tiny styrofoam container sitting atop my sandwich container, what was this thing? Sandwich toppings? I opened it and to my surprise this was my potato salad side! I mean it was small, like a 2 inch by 2 inch container. Kind of strange. Like I've never seen a side anywhere that small and it was very disproportional compared to everything else that came with the meal. It was tasty, but also could've used some more seasoning. Dill, perhaps. The size was just a joke though, I can imagine some big hulking dude ordering a pit meal and getting this and being like "Wtf?!" The fries were in a separate bag, pretty greasy, but sometimes that means delish... nope. These were kinda like 5 Guys but I don't think nearly as good. We found this thanks to Yelp, when we had a hankering for BBQ or a close approximation. When we saw Expressway Pit Beef come up we had to stop. And boy were we glad we did. The most tender and flavorful pit beef I've found in the greater Baltimore area. Good sides; the fries are a lot like 5 Guys fries, and they have malt vinegar available, though I must say the portions are kind of small for the mac and cheese (still real tasty). Big menu, but I don't know why, with such good pit beef. A must try. read more

Good food, but very inconsistent. The first time we went there, the food was amazing, but the second time we got our food to go and when we got home, we had raw sliced beef on a bun. I like my meat medium rare, but that was ridiculous. We couldn't even eat it. My job has these guys cater our work events and I have found that the catering quality is also inconsistent. Two weeks ago, they were at my job and the beef was so well done it was like jerky. Just awful. No amount of BBQ sauce or horseradish could moisten it up. It was free, so I don't want to make a big stink, but just be warned. What you are served today you may not be what you are served tomorrow. I agree with the other reviewers about this place being inconsistent. The first time we went here all of the food was amazing. We sat outside on one of the benches and had a cozy little picnic. The food was incredible. Fast forward to almost a year later and there are things that need definite improvement. Prices are a little steep. For a pulled pork BBQ meal, the price was around $10. What did it include? Sandwich, fries, drink, and a side. I'll go into detail on each item below... pulled pork sandwich- simply amazing. By far the best thing I ate. The pork was not too soggy which is a problem with a lot of BBQ joints. I like to eat it as a sandwich, not a sloppy mess! And they piled it on the sandwich. Great job! drink- seriously, how can you rate a drink? It was good size and refreshing. fries- fresh cut, yes. Tasty, no! I'm not sure if it is the oil they use or the potatoes but I could barely stomach the fries. They were bearable after I dipped them in the BBQ sauce (very yummy!). I could never eat them plain. side- like the fries, a big disappointment. At most you can have 1, maybe 2 bites out of the container. We ordered the mac n cheese, which my wife said reminded her of the lean cuisine version. Ouch... Final verdict- come here for drinks and sandwiches but don't expect much in the way of fries or sides. Maybe the sides are a better size if you order them separately, but the bill was already over $20 for one meal and a sandwich. read more

I have passed this place alot over the past year, and decided to give it a try. I gave expressway pit beef one star due to the majority of the food being a disappointment. My wife and I tried various items off the menu. Lets start with the ribs, they were so tough and chewy you could not even pull the meat off of the bone or even bite it. I just threw it away because there was no way to eat it. All of the sides tasted straight out of the box. The mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and potato salad were probably not homemade. To me, homemade does not matter but all the sides did not even taste good. The mac and cheese tasted bland and the noodles were hard. It seemed like the noodles and cheese were heated in a microwave.The mashed potatoes were also bland, and had a powdered taste. The potato salad was ok, it had a little flavor but it had heavy mayo which gave no flavor to the potato salad. We also ordered fries, which had no seasoning or salt. The fries were all smushed in our bag and seemed soggy. The onion rings were decent, but kept breaking and falling apart. Now on to the bacon cheeseburger, i said medium well but the burger came out well done. It had no flavor and was very tough to eat. I kno i ordered a bacon cheeseburger, but it did not come with any lettuce, tomato, onions, or pickes. If u order a bacon cheese burger at most establishments you also get those condiments on the burger. I understand this place is known for pit beef, but i just recently had barbecue and was in no mood for the beef. I was really looking forward to homemade food and that was the biggest disappointment to me and my wife. In this area, there are not an abundance of places where u can get homemade food, so I will continue to look until I find that place. read more

I've been to Expressway Pit Beef a couple of times now, and I can say that this is one of my favorite places to go for pit beef. They give you enough meat that you could make two sandwiches with! I've eaten the Pit Beef and Pit Turkey sandwiches, and both are very delightful. Expressway slices the meat thin-cut, which is the way that I like it. I can tell you this much: this place gets busy when the weather is formidable (warm), so you either should place your order via phone and pick it up, or be prepared to wait for a bit. There are a couple of wooden tables that you can sit down and eat as well outside of the pit beef shack. This is a place that I will continue to be going to, even more during the spring and summer. This is a road side joint in Odenton. Ordered Jumbo chicken wings 2 sides, coleslaw and potato salad. Everything is cooked to order here so it takes a while to get chicken it was overdone and slightly dried out I will say that the coleslaw and potato salad was very good and I had it for dinner that night. I live within walking distance of this gem, and we probably order from them about once a month. My husband and kids love the chicken nuggets, not what you'd expect to find at a pit beef stand but they're all white meat nuggets and very good. I always get the pit beef sandwich, which has enough meat to make 2 additional sandwiches for leftovers. And no visit for me is complete without the campfire baked beans. It's more of a grab and go place with a small picnic style area. The guys were really friendly, took my order quickly, helped me decide, and brought it out to me (and my dog - they let me have her on the patio with me!). I grabbed some sauce and BBQ sauce and settled in. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, fries and sweet tea. The sandwich was huge! Tons of pork! BUT, it had sauce already on it, and I didn't care for the sauce. I also didn't like the sauce I got at the counter. The BBQ sauce was just your run-of-the-mill stuff. The potato salad was light and quite tasty. The fries - a big, greasy bag full - were really good as well. The sweet tea was a little weak on the "sweet" but this is the North : / Overall, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. I would go back if I had a hankering for some bbq and couldn't make it to Rockville, or maybe to try something else, especially since they let me have the dog on the patio with me. read more

My pork BBQ could have used extra sauce. I got beans, and they were pretty banging. Sweet, with a good amount of ground beef. You get a lot of fries-- enough for two. On March 16th my debit/credit card was taken by the cashier who was a young man(he looked between 16-18yrs old)so that I could make a Purchase at this establishment and wasn't returned. It wasn't till the next day when I went to make another purchase that I realized that My debit card/credit card was missing. I retraced my steps and found that the cashier forgot to return it to me after my purchase. I picked it up and thought nothing of it. So on March 20th a small purchase was made fraudulently for $3.75 and basically went unnoticed. And then a larger purchase(which thankfully didn't go through) of $200 at 5:30am on March 23rd on Walmart.com my bank contacted me right away!! I love Navy Fed!! But my point is don't do business with these people!! I contacted the manager to let her know, and she was in complete denial that it could have been one of her employees. But I still wanted them to know because if it happened to me it will happen to someone else!! Used to come here often, thought I'd try it again. The Mac and cheese was good...and the fried appetizers we're good too. Unfortunately, the wings appeared to have been pre-cooked then refried or cooked in old oil. The plain ones were dry and had a nasty taste. The hot wings were, well the sauce covered the weird taste. Amazing BBQ for a great price! The store is fairly small... you place your order at the front window and there is some outdoor seating out front and in the back (shaded, fortunately). The menu is surprisingly large, but I stuck with the combo meals to get an overall feel for the restaurant. Despite humble appearances, the place really delivers on food. Flavorful pork and chicken sandwiches that overwhelm the bun, hot savory macaroni, and fresh cut "boardwalk" style fries. The huge portion of food I got for ten dollars was delicious. Not too many BBQ sauces or fixings, but overall, I was really satisfied with the place. I'm not a barbeque connoisseur by any means, but this was definitely one of the better restaurants that I've tried. Highly recommend if you're in the area... take a break from standard burger joints and give Expressway a try! read more
