So: I passionately enjoyed my dinner at Mamma Roma. The reason that this is unusual is because I'm not big on going out for Italian food much at restaurants - other than on holidays - since I eat so much Italian food at home. I can make an exception for more casual Italian meals at only a handful of Italian restaurants, and Mamma Roma's is now one. Growing up partially Italian, and a mix of other ethnicities, my family cooks Italian better, of course, than at any restaurant. No one made better Italian dinners than my Na-na (grandmother). But Momma Roma's hummus cream rigatoni could definitely keep me coming back for more. No one made better meatballs than my Mom but the meatballs at Mamma Roma's are flavorful enough. No one made better sauce than my Aunt #1 but the sauce on Momma Roma's ravioli was good and so fresh. And no one made better cookies than my Aunt #2, but Momma Roma's cannolis and rum cookies are tasty. There are a lot of Italian restaurants in the area and I've read that Mamma Roma's is one of, if not, the best. I can only say that while my first visit here a decade ago was fine, this visit goes into my memory as "need to get back there, eventually, if not sooner," after delighting in their new menu item: a creamy hummus rigatoni with sausage. I love hummus, though wasn't really sure if the texture of hummus sauce would be too gritty. It was not. It had a lovely, substantial flavor and silky texture that was balanced well by the impeccably-cooked al dente rigatoni. Add to that the garlic, cream, sausage and herbs in this dish and you've got a winner. I highly recommend this rigatoni, of the 3 rigatoni entrees on Mamma Roma's menu. I haven't even tried the other rigatoni dishes, but still ... don't miss this creamy, garlicky hummus dinner. And the portions of rigatoni in this dish were very generous. The presentation of the lasagna was impressive, in layering and shape. I only had a bite. It had a nice flavor, but I would have needed more bites to give a better description. And since it wasn't my order, I could not indulge. The portion was generous. Also, I would never order lasagna from any restaurant given the reasons cited earlier, but this one was good. I hope someone is laughing because anyone who has grown up in a subcultural group in the US usually sounds exactly like me about the home-cooking they grew up on. Another of Mamma Roma's menu items I'd like to try is their corn and arugula white pizza. I've only found one lovely corn pizza ever at Zelo's in an LA suburb, so now that I have seen this on their menu my curiosity is piqued. Love love love the variety of the dessert menu options. It's not just the desserts in the case on display that you can order. While there are gorgeous cookies on display, the dessert menu has a long, lovely list of all kinds of variations of cheesecakes and cakes. I would like to try the lemon cake on a return visit. And more of the cookie flavors! When I asked the barista what the top desserts were, he was quick to name the cannoli as a first. You'd probably be surprised to find out that this is a counter service approach: you order and pay up at the front and the waiter brings you your food and whatever else you need. You get your own fountain drinks or tea with ice. You can tip in advance, in good faith, when you order in the beginning or you can leave cash on the table at the end of the meal, having already paid your bill in the beginning. There is also the charming dessert counter/bar and espresso area that I mentioned earlier. So, when you are finished with your lunch or dinner, you can go to the barista's counter and order dessert and cappuccino. I love that if you order cake or a cannoli, a cappuccino is only $2. This is an awesome value especially for the evening crowd. For old school Anne Arundel county and Annapolis locals, Mamma Roma's is better than the original Squisito's pizza -- and higher in quality -- but it is a bit reminiscent of that restaurant in terms of popularity and a family feel. Plus, I have never tried the pizza here, but I'm guessing it's good given the quality of the ingredients and preparations we experienced with the pasta dishes. One thing that also really stands out about Mamma Roma's is that they are the only Italian restaurant that is nestled back in the suburban Piney Orchard division of Gambrills. In other words, it's more neighborly there vs. other restaurants along the majorly-trafficked Route 3 corridor. The restaurants along Route 3 have many more transients coming in, given the ease of access, so they are naturally less neighborly. Finally, when we brought our leftovers from dinner home I set them on the kitchen table and left them for a bit. When I came back into our kitchen, it was filled with such delicious aromas! MAMMA MIA!! Our yearly stop to see Mamma & Bruno this weekend while in Baltimore. It is our Saturday tradition to go see Mamma Roma for our Italian meal, and again this year did not disappoint. The coolest thing - apart from the great food, is that Bruno and Mamma recognize us and ask us how our event is going. Keep in mind we go once a year. That kind of attention is not lost on us - and one big reason we keep coming back. This trip we got the usual Caprese, bruschetta, but this year added Macaroni and Cheese Ravioli for an appetizer. THIS IS ONE YOU HAVE TO TRY. Period. The sauce is so rich and creamy, I found myself just spooning the sauce and eating it well after the ravioli were gone. Wow. I switched it up on this trip and asked if they could do a gnocchi alla vodka. Bruno asked how I wanted it prepared and the portion was insane. Flavor great, the prosciutto was great- SO GOOD. For dessert I had an Americano and a Nutella cheesecake. The guy at the dessert bar seemed bothered by us just ordering and when I asked for a fork for the cheesecake he pointed me to the plastic spoons which really struggled with cutting the refrigerated slice. I was in the mood for good pizza today. I remembered we hadn't been to Mamma Roma's in years so my husband and I decided to see if they were still as good as we remembered. We arrived around 3:30 on a Saturday, placed a to go order at the counter and then sat at the 4 seat bar for a drink while we waited (Mango Paloma for me, Strawberry Margarita for hubby). This is my favorite Italian restaurant I've had in the Baltimore suburbs. I've been 3 times now, and it's never disappointed. It's a Hybrid full-service restaurant, but you order the food at the front, and yes they have a lot of To Go orders. My first time trying was To Go, but my subsequent two times, I ate there. The first time I tried was in October 2021. I was at a Meetup group at the MD Corn Maze. The organizer runs the Pizza Addicts Meetup, and he said I need to try Mamma Roma. So, I decided to order a pizza and take home, and it was a well above average thin-crust pizza. The 2nd time I visited was in January 2023 with a Dining Out Meetup group. This was their first Meetup with that group, and they started with a bang picking Mamma Roma! The other 2 restaurants I went to that Winter with them were somewhat mediocre, but at least they started strong! I knew I wanted to go as I remembered I enjoyed the pizza, but I wanted to try a pasta dish. Server was cordial bringing water/drinks as well as food in a reasonable time. We were a fairly big group and had a somewhat separated back area to ourselves. Wow, the pasta dish I was amazed with the quality, even more-so than the pizza. It's a pretty good portion where I had enough for leftovers. My girlfriend & I visited on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. I got a beef pasta dish (see pic); it was one again outstanding! Server was very nice and efficient. My only compliant was that lighting was a little dim in there. I ended up getting a side salad with my dish, which was good too. We had gone to another Italian place in Howard County in late December, and while pretty good, we were comparing all the things we liked better about Mamma Roma. 5/5 Stars Let me start with the only "negative," and honestly, it may not even be a negative for you. Mama Roma is not a traditional restaurant. You don't sit down and have a server take your order. You walk up and order your food yourself. If you want a soda, you get it from the fountain. If you want a beer, cocktail, or dessert, you head to the bar. So if you're expecting white-tablecloth service, just know that's not what this place is. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's talk about the food. The food is elite. I started with the Mussels Verde, and those mussels told me everything I needed to know about this restaurant. This is not some overly technical dish designed to impress culinary school graduates. It is unapologetically savory, buttery, garlicky comfort food. It tastes like something your grandmother would make if she thought you hadn't eaten in a week. And it was perfect. I'm the kind of person who is constantly eating something and thinking, "Needs a little acid," or "Could use a touch more salt," or "Maybe a little sweetness." Not here. The mussels were perfectly cooked, and the sauce was unbelievable. There wasn't a single thing I would have changed. Just good old-fashioned, soul-hugging food. My children ordered penne pasta and cheese pizza. Both of them ate in complete silence, which every parent knows is the highest compliment a child can give. My lady ordered the arugula salad with walnuts, dried figs, and feta cheese. And honestly? How dare they make something that simple taste that good? By the time we finished our appetizers, we had so much faith in the kitchen that we ordered two pizzas to take home before we'd even finished the meal. That's how good this place is. After discovering Mamma Roma's, I think by now we've averaged at least a visit a week, between our cravings- family's requests to take-out, and showing off great plates to visiting friends. This visit, we ordered our normal favorite Meat Lover's Calzone, but added broccoli, artichokes, & hot peppers, the eggplant parmesan hoagie with mushrooms, and our kids got their own adult sized chicken parmesan & spaghetti & meatballs- the dishes were so massive, even when giving them a large bowl & ample meat side, they were still able to have 3-4 meals from the one plate- they were happy all week eating spaghetti again & again- the noodles kept well, tasted fresh even days later (& everything reheats fantastically) our son did devoured the meatballs- he loved licking the red sauce & our daughter kept going, "ooh ooey gooey cheese" when she found more & more cheese between her layers of meat and noodles Definitely going our go-to Italian eatery. Tuesday 6/25/2024 I had heard about this spot from a Reddit that was talking about the best places in Maryland so I was quite intrigued and interested in visiting this spot. I made a call in order for the chicken Alfredo $18, chicken Parmesan $18, mamas cheesesteak pizza medium 14" $18, and a cheese pizza medium 14" with Tuesday special for $7. Both of the pizzas were extremely underwhelming as they were just average at BEST and the crust was AWFUL. The chicken Parmesan was also highly underwhelming and flat out average: the taste was very basic and plain. The chicken Alfredo was the only item that was above average but even then it was just alright. Overall, this spot was very disappointing and I would NOT come back to this place (even if close by) or recommend this spot as there are way better Italian places in Maryland. This pizza place came in like a dark horse! I've been to a few different local pizza spots in the area to taste and compare. And in an unexpected turn of events, this edged out our other local favorites (IYKYK) The pizza here seemed the most like NY pizza. We ordered NY pizza with bacon, sausage, and pepperoni. The dough was good, toppings taste fresh, and wasn't too saucy. It was also the type of pizza that droops when you eat it which doesn't bother me. (If you want something a bit more firm then this may not be the option for you orrr just order it well done) Also we tried the calamari and it was good. With a hit of salt, it would be perfect! Ordered online and overall ok with one of the items showing unavailable but was when we asked about it during pickup. Excellent with an airy, almost crispy trust and just the right portions of each topping. Pasta Carbonara (rich, creamy and reminded us of what we had in Rome). Shrimp Creamy Pesto (was showing unavailable online) was decadent and delicious. Loved the Fettuccini Mediterraneo with a light cream sauce and seafood. I came here with some coworkers for a work lunch on a random weekday (a Thursday, I think), and it was decent. There wasn't a wait to be seated or anything (not sure if it was because it was a Thursday or because this place just isn't often too busy, but either way, I was glad for it. We were quite a large party (around 15 of us), so the fact that we were able to get seated so quickly was great. You order and pay at the counter, which I can see being convenient but also inconvenient depending on the situation, then after you order and pay, they bring your food to the table. I think I ordered a ravioli dish (I want to say it was a crab or lobster ravioli, but I truly cannot remember), and it was fine. I wasn't overly impressed by it, but it wasn't bad by any means. The food was fresh - at least it tasted like it was (not a frozen ravioli), and the service was fine - nothing to write home about necessarily, but it was fine. The atmosphere was fine as well - nothing of note necessarily, although it was awesome that they were able to seat our large party, we were in the middle of the restaurant. Fine for us since again, it wasn't too busy, but if it were, I think it would cause a bit of chaos. I just feel that this wasn't necessarily my particular cup of tea. Delicious Italian pasta dishes at a very affordable price! Ordered the Cavatelli Campagnoli (pasta in cream sauce mixer with ground beef and mushrooms) and could not resist the display of pastries, so I had to get a cannoli. I ordered online through their website, which turned out to be linked to doordash. I think the restaurant would prefer you call them directly to order. The pasta was cooked perfectly. The creamy sauce was on the heavy side but it was so delicious. A little disappointed in the small amount of mushrooms (maybe 3 or 4 pieces?), otherwise, I was very pleased with the dish. This place is such a hidden gem I'm so glad we found it. I ordered the shrimp and crab in cream pasta and it is literally the best pasta I have ever had. The simplicity of the cream sauce let the shrimp and crab be the stars. Pasta was obviously cooked aldente. The chicken marsala was okay. I definitely had better but it was also still quite good. The calamari was not my favorite. It was a bit chewy and the breading was not very crisp. The pasta came with this buttered toast and that was absolutely delicious. The place itself definitely gives your grandma's house which was what I think they were going for. It was a bit crowded with how the tables were set up, but it made for a cozy feel. They cooked food up quickly. I have been to Mamma Roma's a few times with firends and family. Have not had their pizza but have very much enjoyed their italian dishes. My husband loves their seafood pasta, I think their veal parm is my favorite, though I haven't had a bad meal here. My parents (super picky) LOVE this place. Take out seems to be a massive part of their business, but they have a seated area as well. This seated area does fill up during busy times and the one time I tried to make a reservation for 5, they said they don't take reservations. There are no servers though, you have to go to the counter to order. One annoyance for me is that you have to close your tab each time - so if you just want a couple drinks while looking at the menu, you have to pay. Want an appetizer but don't know what you want your main course to be? Have to pay for the app then pay for your main meals separately. So just be prepared for that when eating in. It's not a huge problem, just a bit annoying - would rather be able to give a table number and pay at the end. Everyone who works there is super nice and accommodating. There are runners that will bring your food and clean up dishes. The parking lot is very large and have never had a problem finding a close spot. read more

Mamma roma has some of the best and most affordable Italian food in the area. The pizza is so so good. The staff is very real honest and human. I come from an Italian family and I believe anyone else who has can agree that the restaurant feels and smells like a family home. Warm and aromatic. I see a lot of yelp reviews complaining that the staff is "rude" and I believe this to be a cultural difference between REAL Italians and Americans. It is not their fault that you confuse direct honesty and reciprocity of energy as being rude. You get what you give. Mamma is the sweetest funniest down to earth woman.
