Pit beef, pulled pork, macaroni and cheese with brisket and applesauce plus delicious cornbread
Stefan S.

I had visited the snowball place across the parking lot recently and saw this great barbecue place. I wasn't hungry for barbecue that day so I figured I would come back on another day. That happened to be just yesterday and we started off with snowballs and then moved over to this barbecue place to get a two meat platter. I opted to get the pulled pork and the pit beef. For my sides I decided to try the macaroni and cheese with chopped brisket and the apple sauce. It came with a choice of cornbread or a roll and I opted for the cornbread and made sure that they heard it because I love cornbread. What I didn't realize was that it automatically came with cornbread and my specifying. I ordered a separate order of it which came with this unbelievably delicious sweet honey butter that was already melted. Starting with the cornbread it was fantastic. It had almost like a honey butter crust to it which just made it amazing. It was flavorful and didn't even need any melted butter. The meat itself was good, but it definitely needed some type of sauce. The pit beef especially was very bland by itself and needed a kick to it. I had ordered the original barbecue sauce and it came in a small cup which was barely enough for half of the meat. Having not been here before I would have gotten multiple cups of sauce but since we took the barbecue to go I didn't realize it until we got home. The mac and cheese with chopped brisket was on point. The mac and cheese was just right. The brisket in the mac and cheese was flavorful. It wasn't too salty and it just made for a delicious side. The applesauce was homemade from Baughers, which is a local restaurant nearby. It was quite delicious and I would have loved to have had more of it. Others in my party had similar experiences with the meat. They would have loved to have had more sauce because it was bland to them as well. The only thing that differed in terms of their sides is that they got beans and they really didn't like them. They weren't sure what type of beans were used and it wasn't your standard type of big themes. As they were in more of a vinegar type sauce. They also had coleslaw which I don't care for but they said that was very good and a good addition as a side to their meal. So for those of you reading this review, I would highly recommend to get a couple one more containers of sauce. All in all this was a good find right next to an amazing snowball and ice cream stand. Make sure to check out the bus stop when you go to get barbecue. Feel free to check out my review for the bus stop as well.

We love Char'd a LOT. So we drove out here twice in a week. No shame. My Husband is obsessed with the Pit Turkey sandwiches and always does a side of mac n cheese. We've had a lot of meat, if you scroll through my other reviews, and he says hands down Char'd wins. My ideal meal from here is: 2 meat platter (double pit ham) w/ 2 sides (collard greens and coleslaw) I add on cheesy potatoes and beans. They're quick, the food is always spot on, the sauces are delicious! I added Char'd to my "Country Weekend" guide on Instagram.

Beef brisket, pit turkey, Mac and Cheese and cheesy potato.

This barbecue place is surprisingly good. The brisket was nice and tender. Very enjoyable to eat. The pit turkey was good as well. For my sides I had Mac and cheese mix with brisket and cheesy potato. Both were excellent. The cornbread was great. I haven't had a good tasty cornbread in a very long time. It was moist and sweet. I will definitely be back to this barbecue joint.

This place is a little bit of a drive for me but definitely worth it! I'm not a big bbq sauce gal so going in blindly and just hoping the meat is a 10/10 without any sauce is a toss up but this place did not disappoint. I ordered a brisket slider and pit turkey slider. Brisket was fall apart in your mouth moist (sorry for those who hate the word). I wish I had ordered one to go. The pit turkey was sliced perfectly and had great flavor. I was pleasantly surprised at the sizes of these sliders. I would consider them larger than half of the sandwiches offered at other bbq places. The workers were friendly and service was quick. Overall great experience and worth the drive.

We made the drive to visit Char'd on a whim while experiencing serious bbq cravings. While weather is pleasant, it's a wonderful outdoor setup with lots of space between tables (covid-friendly and dog-friendly). The menu covers your basic bbq offerings as well as sides; prices were fairly standard as were portion sizes. The brisket was juicy and flavorful but the collard greens were a tad bitter. We were a little disappointed when we ordered iced sweet tea to be given bottled store brand (not homemade) but our faults for assuming. All in all, definitely worth the trip for a fun, outdoor dining experience. A guarantee that you will leave satiated (with leftovers to enjoy at home).

We got the brisket tacos, cheesy potatoes, and collard greens. Such a satisfying meal. The only thing I'd change is I would add some vinegar to the collards. Make the trip to this place and then enjoy some ice cream at the bus stop!

BBQ Tacos Ice Cream Farmers Market This BBQ joint is situated right off of Hanover Pike. Plenty of parking and there's an ice cream stand and a little farmers market on the same lot. There was also a little Monument Brewery pop up spot, but I'm not sure if that was just their for the weekend. I only visited Char'd, but thought it was great to have ice cream right next door if by chance you have room for dessert. Which you probably won't after this BBQ! This is a walk up and order joint and everything is to-go style. I got 2 pulled pork tacos (pictured) which were LOADED! Lettuce, jalapeño, tomatoes, red onion, 2 shredded cheeses, and their homemade aioli. And this is at a BBQ joint people! I also got a platter because I wanted to try their meats on their own, along with their sides. The 1 meat platter was $11 or $11.99 (can't remember exactly). You get a choice of one meat, 2 sides, cornbread or a roll. I chose their brisket, cheesy potatoes and brisket Mac and cheese as my sides, and cornbread. I couldn't even pick up the brisket slices because they were so tender they just fell apart. I'm not a huge brisket fan but this was obviously cooked well. The brisket Mac and cheese was ok, but their cheesy potatoes and their cornbread were absolute standouts. The best way to describe their cheesy potatoes is like Mac and cheese.. but with potatoes isn't of noodles. Yum! But the real kicker was their cornbread. That's right. I was shocked when I took a bite and 1. It was moist and 2. It was SWEET! Like sugary, and buttery sweet. I thought that was a Genius twist especially after all of the salty and savory meats and sides. It was basically the dessert that completed and complimented the meal. They had about 6-7 sauces to choose from, too. I got their sweet and spicy as well as their tiger sauce, and really liked the sweet and spicy with the brisket. There were plenty of picnic tables on site to sit down at. It may be a hike to Carroll County, but this place is a absolutely worth it! Everything was delicious and I thought their prices were fair as well.

Food is decent. But the 8inch hair in my potato salad was cruel. I won't return. Too many other places to get BBq.

A huge variety on the menu. I had the brisket tip sandwich with tater wedges and Mac n Cheese. There was no way you could call what I had tips. They were ginormous! It was way more than 6oz as advertised. The flavor was deep and meaty. I couldn't hardly make a dent. The tater wedges lacked any seasoning not even salt. Salt would have helped out tremendously. The Mac n cheese was a huge disappointment. The noodles were mush, cooked way too long. And again no flavor. I didn't taste cheese, milk or butter and no salt or pepper. The prices were fantastic I just wish the sides were better. I tried my wife's bbq chicken sandwich and that tasted delicious. The baked beans were too vinegary. The coleslaw was fine. I would come back for the bbq chicken sandwich and I would like to try the other sides and hope they are better. I really loved the music they were playing inside. It's a cute place.

Finally decided to try this place and it was worth it. First, it was much more affordable than the bbq spots in the west. We ordered the black plate special and a 3 meat plate. The black plate special was a smoked ribeye and every bite of that thing was tender snd flavorful. Honestly, it didn't need the sauce it came with. For the 3 meat plate, we got fatty brisket, cheese and jalapeño sausage, and baby back ribs. The fatty brisket was definitely fatty, maybe a little too fatty for me, but great flavor and fat is flavor. The baby back ribs seemed more like spareribs, but tender with a nice bite, not too "fall off the bone". The jalapeno sausage had a nice snap. My favorite meat was the ribeye. For sides we got potato salad, cole slaw, and mac and cheese. All the sides were good, the cole slaw was refreshing and gave a nice contrast for the fatty meat. I wish they had rice though. Steamed rice and that ribeye would have been top tier. The staff are very friendly and they check up on you even though it's a self serve place. Sadly, I live in the west coast, so I don't know if I would ever be back again in the area.

Smoky's (and Pioneer) was listed in a Washington Post article back in 2019 as one of the 11 best places to go in Maryland for Baltimore Pit Beef, and so I've been wanting to try it for some time. The article said it was one of, if not the BEST place to go for RARE pit beef, as if you order rare, the entire beef sandwich is genuinely rare and very pink. That's what I wanted! I walked in this morning a little before 11:30 am. The place was very quiet. The staff was not busy and anxious to take my order. I ordered a large RARE Pit Beef sandwich with horseradish (not tiger sauce) and raw onions. The large pit beef was $9.95. Soda and tax brought it to $12. True, it was very pink beef and a healthy portion (menu says 7 oz, I didn't weight it). The kaiser bun was very soft but a little too big in diameter for the pile of beef although it was a good-sized pile. I suppose they could have spread the beef out a bit better on the bun considering they were not busy. The sandwich was good but I can't say I was blown away. It was tender as I would expect. Two things that became evident is the sandwich was not dripping with meat juices. It was not dry by any means, but it was not drippy at all, for what that's worth. There was a little bit of red juice on the center of the bun but that was all. Comparably, Pioneer is very difficult to eat without getting juices on your shirt. Also, I can't say I could actually taste the pit. A genuine pit beef should have pit flavor in it. Maybe one could blame that on the fact that I ordered rare. The staff was friendly. The place is very clean and they have a nice indoors dining area which beats Pioneer since all Pioneer has is a few outdoors picnic tables. All in all, it was a very good sandwich and I would go again if I was in the area.
