Don't hesitate if you are a true lover of all things diners, past and present. We were searching for a place to stop on our coastal route we take to PA and back to VA. My husband stumbled on the Exmore Diner. We can not pass up a diner. When entering there is maybe 18 stools at a bar top, and maybe 6 booths. Small, but quaint. They offer take out, and eat in. This is very much a local place where many are regulars. I absolutely love that! It is a little on the dirty side. But, I can look past things like that in certain things. It's an old diner, mostly original. The menu is not too large. Which is perfect. It is not overwhelming. They have birch beer! Our waitress was fantastic. We had 1-2 come up and assist us. Team work makes the dream work. The food. I was told the specials for the day were popular. I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich with Lima beans, Mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes. My husband classic cheeseburger with crinkle fries and a club sandwich. My children, game and cheese sandwich, and a BLT. Everything was amazing! Just what we were hoping for. My hot roast beef sandwich was fabulous! The gravy was delicious. Take not they add sugar to the macaroni and cheese, so it is in the sweeter side. It was pretty good, just different. I finished my meal with a chocolate milk shake and a Key Lime Smith Island Cake. What... it's not Jan 1, diet hasn't started. Ha! Joking. Both the cake and milkshake were just the sweetness needed. The Smith Island cake is made by a local gal named Becca. She is amazing! Overall, we are coming back especially when we're driving through.

The Exmore Diner is a local favorite. Friendly staff and friendly prices. Daily specials are the key to their success. Great fresh seafood. Great for Breakfast, and dinner. Crab cakes are one of my favorites. Love the old time classic dinner vibe.

Cruising on Route 13 and looking for breakfast, this is your stop. A true diner. Small and friendly with a menu from local seafood to breakfast favorites. Service was nice and fast. Food was good, nothing fancy but just what we needed to fuel our morning. We had the creamed beef special and a crab cake sandwiches. Hash browns are homemade and come with or without onion. Chipped beef was house made and lots of beef. The crab cake was all crab and just a nice fresh roll. Would stop again. $

On the way back to NY we stopped by this little diner. I love places like this and do try to seek them out, but this was by pure chance. We had breakfast and it was delicious. Very family owned and ran type feel which I love. Hope to visit it again if it is in the way.

    An authentic old fashioned diner

We found this little gem driving home from Florida and will return annually. The salad with grilled chicken was delicious! Good service in a friendly "down home" atmosphere.

On the way home from Savannah, stopped to eat at the Esmore Diner. Retro style with retro food that was delicious! Steamed shrimp done perfect with butter and old bay to dip them. I went old school...Liver and onions with mashed potatoes and turnip greens. We finished it off with a piece of creamsicle Smith Island cake!

Tucked away off the main drive, rt13, this diner is just the same as it was back in the day. Great local food and fresh vegetables. The employees are friendly. There are only about 10 tables and a counter area wheee you can sit and dine. I had the steamed shrimp, served piping hot. Be sure you have plenty of napkins. I also ordered the green beans and coleslaw. No complaints here. I can see why it is a local favorite. I could barely eat all the shrimp.

that's my sweet mama. She had the shrimp and I had the chicken salad and we got a clam chowder to go. All of it wonderful wonderful.

The food is amazing. The vibe is awesome, and the service is crazy fast. It is the best of everything on the eastern shore.

Ordered drinks and a large pizza, half plain; half peppers and pepperoni, extra thin crust. Look, we are from NY so, yeah, we are a little pizza snobby. But, tbh, this pizza was really tasty! Was it brick oven neapolitan worthy? No, but this isn't a brick oven joint and doesn't claim to be. Full disclosure: we drove by the Deadrise in Cape Charles and had no patience for an hour wait. And that, too, was understandable. It was Friday night, Memorial Day weekend! The staff here was warm and welcoming, crowd was friendly, we liked watching the pool players and left happy and full. This place takes the order when you walk in, then you seat yourself until your food is brought you. There was about a 5 minute wait before we placed our order, and another 10 before we received our food. You will notice at first glance that this place is in dire need of a makeover. However, don't let that sway you from dining here because, the food was pretty darn good. I ordered 1/2 rack of ribs, Potato Salad, Mac & Cheese, and Cornbread. The ribs were tender, tasty and not drowning in BBQ sauce ...LUV IT!!!!...The Mac & Cheese was good, but needed to be warmed up. They use real cheddar, which is what I prefer, and not a Velveeta creamy type cheese like most establishments. The potato salad was decent, and the Cornbread was sweet, fluffy, & hot. The only issue that I had with this meal was the temp of the Mac & Cheese when it was served to me. It could've been a lil warmer. The other issue was that they did not have any Chicken or Fish menu items . However, we did visit on a holiday weekend 1 hour before they were closing: The wait staff here was great..I could not give this place 5 stars due to the need for renovations in the establishment and the temp of my Mac & Cheese. But this is a place worthy of visiting, just don't have too high expectations..

When we came last year, it seemed like they were having an off night. We came today, however, and this will be our last visit. Our bill was over 100 (2 adults and 1 child, water to drink), and had the most disappointing food ever. Everything was incredibly bland, to the point of almost inedible. We began with a half-dozen order of oysters, which had very little meat. Even more frustrating was how they were served - they were full of shells mixed into the meat and dry (all the water had been dumped out), which meant that the people shucking did not know how to properly shuck an oyster. The crunch of the shells also made for an unpleasant eating experience. The lobster rolls had absolutely no flavor. I have never not finished a lobster roll in my life, but about halfway through I just gave up. We wanted to order crab cakes, but they were out (note that they've been out on our last several visits - this time we were there right when they opened, so they could not have run out). The children's chicken tenders appeared to have come straight out of the freezer. The Caesar salad was tasteless. I ordered the local vegetables and was given the option of Brussel sprouts or broccolini (these have been the options every time I've visited no matter the season). I was disappointed, since there is great produce on the Eastern Shore in the middle of July, none of which includes the fall/spring produce of Brussel Sprouts or Broccolini. The Broccolini wasn't cooked, but appeared to have been warmed while doused in olive oil (but no salt or other seasonings). The middle was still cold. We saw our server only a few times when she took our order and dropped off our food. Someone else dropped off the oysters, and dropped the oyster fork on the floor. She picked it up, apologized, and promised to return but we never saw her again so had to eat the oysters with the forks we had used for the caesar salad (not the best combination). The oysters weren't great to begin with, so it probably didn't make much difference. I'm disappointed in the Shanty, and disappointed at how much we spent on such a mediocre meal. I won't return.

While walking along Mason Avenue, I made reservations at The Shanty, and it turned out to be a great choice. The restaurant is just a short stroll from the main shopping area, down by the docks. You can park for free along Mason Avenue or drive directly to The Shanty, which has its own parking lot. One of the highlights was enjoying fresh seafood on the open-air porch with beautiful waterfront views. The atmosphere was relaxed, charming, and perfectly summery. They also had plenty of options for the kids, including mac and cheese and chicken fingers, so everyone was happy. I ordered the fish tacos, while my mom enjoyed the seafood chowder and a wedge salad. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for after a day exploring Cape Charles. If you're visiting the area and looking for a casual waterfront meal with great seafood, a family-friendly menu, and a fun coastal vibe, The Shanty is definitely worth a visit.
