I ordered the chicken fajitas to go they were so good! I honestly was pleasantly surprised. We were here visiting for the weekend and this was one of the closest Mexican places near our airbnb. Food and service were good but over taxed our meal. Tax isn't even shown on the bill, after asking why exactly $5 more than our food was added to bill we were told it's tax but this would be 10% or more, rate is 5% for this area. Need to clearly identify and properly add tax to bill. Disappointing. read more

Not bad if this was the only Mexican place in the area and it sure felt like it. We were are on vacation driving down to Cape Charles, Va and needed to stop for lunch and saw this little place on the side of the road. So many places along the road were closed and/or run down. This is what you have in a small coastal town near the Chesapeake Bay. We entered and there was a long counter for take out so I thought oops, let's try another place. Luckily I scanned a little further and saw tables and chairs. We were seated right away and given a menu with close to six pages. We ordered from the lunch option. I noticed the prices were on the cheap side. I ordered the beef quesadilla (#18). Food came relatively quickly and I noticed that my quesadilla was a slightly smaller portion than I am normally used to back in the DC area. It's usually two tortillas with meat and cheese in between. Here, one tortilla. Almost every other Mexican place will also serve a small side salad. Not here, just beans and rice. No problem with beans and rice, I love beans and rice, but my dish was lacking any green vegetables! Not even a little guacamole! Food was fine. Decor was cheapy with plastic chilis strung across the ceiling. Not fancy by any means. Tables and chairs didn't match. Low ceilings and 70's wood paneling. El Maguey is an institution on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. We always make a point of eating there whenever we are in the area. The pork carnitas in particular are one of my favorites. The chile rellenos are delicious. Plenty of options for kids. Margaritas are just about perfect and not too sweet. Highly recommended. read more

We used to order take-out about once a month, and usually got the taco salad with chicken, which was good. Fresh guacamole, yummy grated cheese, plentiful chicken and sour cream, refried beans, and a tasty shell. About a year ago we got taco salads that were not very good. So we figured it was just a bad day for them. But a few weeks later we tried again, and they were inedible. Over-fried tortilla shells in rancid grease, just nasty. Nothing tasted fresh. We threw them away and haven't returned, nor will we. They must have changed owners or managers or cooks or all of the above. read more

The Mexican population on the Eastern Shore of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia must be growing because there are quite a few Spanish speaking restaurants, groceries and other shops all along Route 113 in those three states. El Maguey is a fairly large casa on the southbound side of the road in Exmore, Va. When I stopped in around 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon, it was fairly crowded, but I scored a deuce against the back wall near the rear door. My neighbors were three of the local constabulary talking police work and court appearances. The menu was several pages of breakfasts, lunches and dinners in Spanish, but with English descriptions. Plenty of photos if that was your preferred means of communicating with the staff. I asked for two Fish Tacos @ $3.50 per. The price was certainly right. They were both large and overflowing with shredded lettuce, tomato, corn kernels, cheese folded into a grilled tortilla. The Fried Fish had been swimming in the Atlantic that morning, and had a pleasant mild taste. A couple of hits of salsa caliente and a generous spooning of the special pink side sauce and these babies came to life. They were devoured quickly. The menu offers a lot more for lunch and dinner, and base on my brief experience, I would consider stopping in for a grander meal if I have the time on the road back to Philly. read more

They got jokes for days here. Apparently being lactose intolerant is a joke, since once I asked for no cheese or cream the waitress laughed. Besides that, the horchata tasted like limeade. If you're into that sort of thing, you do you, but-- pun intended-- it left a bad taste in my mouth. The cook, young guy, was very kind though and the hostess as well was kind. The one star goes for their food-- it was actually pretty good. I had the mushroom burrito with rice and beans. My mom's Chile Relleno was very good! Honestly I would give 3 stars for the food but the bad service from the waitress cancelled a lot of that out. First visit. Friendly people and patrons. Looks like the Va Marine Police also enjoy dining here.. Got take out. #7and #10 with a side of chicken tamales. Food was Authentic, and tasted great. I always forget to ask for spicy, my fault. Everything was spectacular!!! Was there at like 12:30 in the afternoon place was rocking. Lot was full. The food was absolutely amazing and super quick! I got Dinner #16 and ordered the cheese dip as an appetizer. The salsa was by far the best salsa I have ever had along with the cheese dip. The kick this restaurant has in its salsa is what I've been looking for. The food was full of flavor and gives great portions. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive. Over all the entire establishment as a whole was very clean, staff very friendly, and a must try, if you haven't already!! Will definitely be back to try other items on the menu. I am giving this place three stars for now, it may go up after my next visit as I always try to give places more than one go. That being said...I wasn't expecting anything fancy and so there was no surprise in the decor etc of the place. It is clean and utilitarian which is fine for what it is. The service was acceptable. Not great...but at least they were welcoming. I say acceptable because the waitress only stopped by to take the order and never checked back in after the food was delivered (I had an empty glass for half my meal). The food is so so. I was actually disappointed with what I got (nachos supreme). Anyway, I will do my best to give them another go and order something more off the deeper side of the menu. read more
