So I wanted to do a 3 and 1/2 but Yelp won't let me be great. Service was great, place wasn't very full and we were sat immediately. Our service was patient and attentive. The portions were large and everything was tasty. The cheese bread that we got as a table was our favorite item and we got one to go. Other stand outs bean soup, gyro, and chicken piccata. I live across the bridge in Yardley but my community told me the best diner in the area was across the bridge so off I went. They did not lie! I immediately liked the vibe. The owner in his suit greets you at the door. You walk in to a huge table of huge cookies and baked goods wrapped to go. You can not ignore the delicious looking and huge pies and cakes on display, The breakfast menu was huge! There were also some fantastic lunch specials. I had my mind set on breakfast but I caught a glimpse of someone else's crab cake and was swayed. $14.99 for a huge crab cake, a boat of Mac & cheese, stewed tomato's, a huge bowl of clam chowder and a dessert. The crab cake was so good. Fried to perfection. The Mac and cheese was super creamy. The portion was huge. This was 2-3 meals for me. I took my dessert to go. This is where I go to eat with my sister, because she loves diners. She has eaten at many diners in the State, and this is one of her local favorites in the Trenton area, the other one being The Golden Dawn in Hamilton. The service here is prompt and efficient, the food is decent and copious, and the value is very good. Many people leave with take out containers, because the portions are very generous. House made soups come with most entrees and even with sandwiches, and my favorite is the split pea soup. I especially like the burgers which taste charcoal broiled.Dessert also comes with most meals - a choice of pudding, ice cream or jello. Don't go there - while the service is great and the food is good, my mother was charge $13.99 for a bowl of soup. This was as much as my entree. She says she was not told it was that much; I feel she should have been warned of the cost. The bill for 2 people for an omelet, the soup, a salad and coffees with the tip was $73.00. Other people in the area have had similar complaints so it isn't an isolated incident. I can only speak on behalf of the desserts. They are decadent and excellent and go perfectly with a hot cup of diner coffee. I stopped in with a work colleague after a nice Italian dinner. He had eaten at this diner on a previous trip and recommended we stop in for dessert. Excellent decision. It was pretty late and they did a nice job of taking care of us quickly. The most difficult part of the visit was picking which piece of cake i wanted from the myriad options in the big glass case. The Ewing diner is a TCNJ student staple. I've been a few times and this place has a good diner vibe. The service is usually okay, and the food is average. The real kicker is the dessert. Everyone I know raves about this diner...maybe we went on an off day. We were in the area and not sure what to eat, and figured a diner would be a good place since we were so undecided. It looked like a slow time we were seated, however they bunched us up with the only 3 other tables in the restaurant. I understand there are stations, but my chair was completely bumped up to the other table's chair, with no room if I needed to get out. Our server promptly greeted us and asked if we were ready. We needed a few minutes. We looked at the menus provided, and noticed these were more restaurant prices than diner prices. We ended up going with breakfast and fish and chips off the specials menu. The special menu came with soup or salad and a dessert. I chose a garden salad which had a good mix of veggies. We waited a very long time for our meals. We were looking for our server to get some refills on our drinks but didn't see her. The one bus boy we saw was hustling. He really was on top of things. Our meals finally came out and we got our refills. My boyfriend got eggs over easy...they were a little wet, more than usual. The potatoes were very good. The rye bread was perfectly buttered. The fish were huge, however, the fish was very wet and mushy. Only the ends were edible. The fries were very good, almost a double fry. I could only eat one of the fish. I boxed the rest up and thought maybe it would be better in the air fryer, but it still was mushy. I got the carrot cake as the dessert and had it to go. It was a good size and a good piece of carrot cake. We went to pay and was happy to see there was no credit card fee. Would go again and try some other options. Apple Maps and ads on NJ 101.5 both say Ewing Diner is "Open 24 Hours" but this is not true on Mondays and Tuesdays. Sign on the door says they're open until 11:00pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, but when I showed up at 10:10 on Monday night, the first door I tried was locked. The other door was open but when I told the manager the first door I tried was locked he said he forgot to lock both doors. He said he'd serve me if I was quick, then immediately asked me if I needed a menu or if I knew what I wanted. At that point I got up and left, never to return. Come to the Ewing Diner if you want to be treated like crap. Would give 0 stars if I could. read more

This review is for breakfast only since I have not been there for anything else. Just had my 3rd breakfast at this old school diner and it was exactly like the last 2, good! This place is simple, plain and does eggs right. Their omelettes come with 4 eggs vs the traditional 3 and you get home fries and toast as you do in many other diners. However, when I ask for my potatoes crispy, they actually listen here. Also, the eggs are not over cooked and the additional items (spinach, mushrooms, etc.) are never skimped on. The only zonk for me at the place is the ketchup. Theirs is still decent but i prefer Heinz. Waitstaff is always pleasant and make sure your coffee is filled. Simple, plentiful, and just like a diner should be. If you want a hearty breakfast you need to drop by. read more

Since moving to Ewing in November I have eaten at the Ewing Diner at least four times. Each visit was average at best and nothing to write home about. Tonight, I noticed a few things that will have me never returning. First were the prices. Either I wasn't as attentive my previous visits or prices have soared because they were the first thing I noticed. I ordered a sausage sandwich, which the waitress said they didn't have and where I had to point out on the menu to show they did. The sandwich, your typical with peppers and onions on a torpedo roll, came with soup, fries, coleslaw and a pickle. Price $18.49! Now here's where their stinginess lost them a customer: There was a limit of ONE free refill on a glass of fountain soda (half filled with ice) and NO free refill if you requested a soda without ice! That has got to be the cheapest thing I've ever seen an establishment do. Fountain soda doesn't cost them more than a quarter. Oh, but it gets better. "After 2 coffees you will be charged." Not done yet. "To-Go surcharge (5%) will be added to all takeout orders." Still not done. "All gratuities (20%) may be added to your check." And lastly, "Minimum Service or Sharing Charge: $5.00 (per person)." The food was good today, I'll give them that, but I won't be back. read more

We stopped in for a late dinner after my nephews birthday party. I am from Philly, and while we have some OK diners in the area, nothing beats a traditional Jersey diner who can still pull off a huge menu, quality food, and give you that old school atmosphere while keeping a classy modern diner decor. It's a nice cozy space that gives you the option of a booth, table, or a bar. For our meals, we got the gyro, and napolatino panini. We were going to get an appetizer as well, but in true diner fashion, the meals came with a cup of soup, Cole slaw, a pickle, and fries. Plenty to fill up on. The gyro, while a classic, was of good quality. The lamb meat was tender, juicy, and was seasoned well. Too many places have lamb that has the horrible texture of steakums and is paper thin. The pita was soft and fresh and the tzatziki was full of flavor. The napolitano panini was huge to say the least and we definately needed a box for leftovers. It's basically a chicken parm panini with fried eggplant, but all of the ingredients were prepared well. Nothing tasted greasy, the chicken was crispy but still moist and not a tough or grisly piece to be found. The eggplant was also nicely fried and held up well on the sandwhich. The sauce was also acidic enough to cut through all of the fried items on the sandwhich. For dessert, we got a slice of baklava cheesecake to go. It's literally a slice of baklava on top of the cheesecake, and while I didnt think it would work, was the best bite of the night. Thew chewiness from the baklava mixed with the creaminess from the cheesecake was the perfect bite. I plan on coming back to try other things but I'd make the trip just for that cheesecake. read more

Went at about 6:30pm on a Saturday night for dinner. The manager was wonderful and diligent about supervising activity both in and outside, both of which they have seating. After all was said and done, the reuben, the conversation I had with my guest and the delightful manager were the best part of this establishment. Summary: You are safe stopping in if you are going to get the open faced reuben sandwich. At some point it was decided to drastically cut costs by using cheap ingredients and extending the period by which food is kept and available for service prior to being declared "spoiled". Charging what you charge for sub-par quality items is disrespectful to your customers. In that regard, two stars is fair, as your on site manager cannot make up for these shortcomings (Despite being excellent at his job), and I don't think it would have been fair for me to dump all of this on his head. No comment on breakfast offerings so please do not apply this rating to any of those items. Detail: My guest LOVED her reuben sandwich, it was huge and she took another one home it was soo good, so if you stop in here, try one. I got the Texas Panini with lobster bisque, mozz sticks and jalapeno poppers, as well as a piece of cheesecake and coffee for dessert. The mozz sticks were the best part of the meal. The jalapeno poppers do NOT have cheddar cheese as the menu says, and both are ridiculously overpriced, despite the mozz sticks being good. It is a diner so I give them leeway with the pricing, but still, overpriced. The Texas Panini, I don't know how else to put this, was just pathetic. The chicken was full of grizzle and it tasted like it had been premade and was either toasted or microwaved to order. The cheese was kraft singles cheese, I could taste it right away. There was no bbq sauce and the bread was stale chewy (probably from being heated more than once, stored too long, or some combination). The lobster bisque was not lobster bisque. It was old cream sauce with fake crab from the supermarket. I was appalled and put it aside. Never seen anything like that before. The cheesecake was also definitely old and had been sitting there for WAY too long. I still don't know how they managed this one, but even the coffee was just terrible. It tasted burnt, old and like it had been sitting in the pot for ages. For a diner, I am not sure how much worse you can get. I ordered few items to go, and despite my experience (I was highly recommended this diner, so wanted to make sure it got a fair shake), I figured maybe my sample size was too small, and my guest really loved her reuben, so I put in the order for the following items, with comments under each (As a general comment, whoever packaged these items should be "re-educated". Seriously it was a MESS): Brooklyn Burger - Cooked improperly, there was something wrong with the cheese and it had a very very funky taste. Threw most of it away. Chicken Parm - Pasta was way way way overcooked, sauce tasted like Ragu, and chicken was really really tough. Threw half of it away and regretted eating most of the first half. Chili - I think it was supermarket chili, seriously. After heating it up they put it in a clamshell plastic container, as I can only assume they ran out of bowls or appropriate packaging. Bizarre and a total mess which I could have done without. Really disappointing and unfortunate, and I sincerely hope they are able to figure these problems out and do better, before someone gets violently ill of course. read more

I really enjoyed the texture of the fries and everything was cooked to my liking. The only downside was the service. Our waitress was MIA half of the time and seemed to be all over the place. I'm usually fine with this until you don't have anything to drink with your meal and have to just stick it out because she's nowhere to be found. We grabbed a slice of the caramel fudge cake to go and it was very good. Really liked the place our food was pretty good for diner food! Owner was night and waitress! Had a party of 7 so she delt with all of us very well!
