As always, A+ service and incredible food! The pork fried rice is the best fried rice I've ever had. The orange peel chicken was great and so was the beef and broccoli. The egg drop soup is great but the egg rolls were off the chain. The inside is very dated but somehow incredibly comforting and charming - reminds me of an 80s banquet hall but the 80s were the best so it's fine by me! (Even the wait staff look straight out of the 80s). I cannot wait to come back! So happy to see that it's still there and doing well, hadn't been in over 20 years. I've been coming here for years, which makes this especially disappointing to say--this place is not what it used to be. On my last visit, the food was noticeably off. The egg rolls had a strange, unpleasant flavor, it seems as if they used kimchi because of the strong vinegar taste, the crab rangoon was average, and the jumbo shrimp fried rice was the biggest letdown--rubbery, unseasoned shrimp that felt like an afterthought. Only the pepper steak was decent. The service made things worse. When we raised a concern, there was no apology, just a shift in attitude and no follow-up. We were even charged for food we barely touched and had to ask for it to be removed. Also, the pressure to tip at checkout feels inappropriate when the experience doesn't match. After years of being a loyal customer, I won't be returning. read more

The food/service/ambiance here: everything was good (maybe could use a good carpet-cleaning though). Nothing was really spectacular, except my daughter got the meal that came in a basket made of taro, which I had never seen before. It was interesting but not something she would order again. I always like to try hot and sour soup, and theirs was very good. No one reads 5 star reviews but this place really is great! DO venture to the end of Wentworth a few steps farther than you might want to. This place is so worth it! The dining area is very spacious and you never have to feel like you're crammed in, even if it was a full house, though it wasn't on a Thursday evening. I'm hoping it was just a fluke, cause this place needs to stay in business. I'm sure I will be contributing to that! Heck I might go get dinner from there again tonight! The staff were very nice and VERY helpful. I have a friend who loves Chinese food but soy and wheat make him sick to his stomach. He's the one who suggested this place because they were very kind in helping him find something he could eat. Despite the fact that he can be a little difficult (though very sweet himself). There are 3 very minor criticisms I have. And there's not a whole lot that can be done about most of them. 1 ) the bathroom is actually very cramped and despite having a handicap stall, it might be very difficult for a wheelchair to get in there. I'm a big girl and squeezed in ok though. Once you get past the main door into the restroom and into the handicap stall it's a bit better. 2) The carpet is seriously old and banged up. But at least it looked free of debris and the rest of the restaurant seemed clean. Even the restroom, though dated, was kept clean and smelled decent. Which is saying a lot for a place like this honestly. 3) when I asked for the servers recommendation for popular dishes... AT FIRST they listed off a lot of typical stuff like "fried rice, crab rangoon" etc. But if it is my FIRST time somewhere, I need them to bring out the big guns and recommend something that's really going to wow me into returning. Next time, I will have to try the fried rice and crab Rangoon to see how they are. But it would take a God's touch to make either of those staples interesting enough to impress me. They're always good, but they're a fallback when I'm not sure of an outstanding option. That being said, these are the dishes I tried that are most definitely going to get me coming back. Beef chow fun crispy noodles and tasty gravy! yummmm! So glad to have a replacement place that does it right, since my old go-to, Seven Treasures is closed. Salt & pepper shrimp recommended by the waiter when I asked "what fo YOU like to eat?" SO delicately crispy, flavorful and good portion despite me not wanting to stop eating it. More please! Overall Thoughts: Evergreen is one of the older restaurants in the Old Chinatown area serving a diverse, expansive menu of primarily Cantonese staples. While I really liked some dishes (namely, the Fried Egg Tofu and Fried Taro Basket), other dishes were just so-so. The interior is arranged in classic, spacious Chinese banquet style, and the service is quick and direct. Food I tried: - Wonton Soup: Refreshing and aromatic, but there are better wonton soup options out there in Chinatown. - Fried Egg Tofu with Pea Pod Tips: Really good and would recommend!! Pea pod tips were well-sautéed; the egg tofu was full of flavor and had a great crispy exterior texture combined with a soft, silky interior texture. - Szechuan Eggplant: As a lover of Chinese-style sautéed eggplants, I was disappointed by this dish. The mix of eggplants with American broccoli didn't work for me, and the eggplant wasn't soft / fried enough. - Deep Sea in Basket: This is a creative dish that I haven't seen before in other restaurants in Chinatown-- it's sautéed seafood placed in a "basket" made of taro. The basket was the best part in my opinion-- it was both soft and crunchy, and had a nice subtle taro flavor, like eating taro chips. - Mongolian Delight: This was a standard, but very solid and flavorful dish of sautéed veggies and beef. The beef was tender and the flavors were rich. - Thai Pineapple Shrimp: Didn't love this dish; it was originally supposed to be mango shrimp, but they ran out of mango and substituted pineapple. I didn't love the monotonous flavor combination of the sour/tangy pineapple with the mildly sour/tangy sauce. Split between 4 people, the total came out to ~$30/pp including tax/tip, which was solid considering we were all extremely full afterwards and still had leftovers to take home. -- Price (relative to peers): 4.4/5 Food: 4.2/5 Ambience: 4.7/5 Service: 4.6/5 Overall Value: 4.2/5 read more

I have not been to Evergreen restaurant in over a decade but my family wanted to come here for a traditional Chinese dinner and it was not great. We wanted the fried oysters but since there were 8 of us, we decided to order 2 orders and it was $25 each order for a total of $50 for 2! Wowza! Probably one of the most expensive meal I've had for a long time and it was not even a lot of food. Service was good but very short handed. Seems like only 1 waitress is really doing her job while the owner sat around peeling peapods during dinner rush hour which made no sense to me. Get up and help your waitress! Why peel peapods on a busy weekend dinner? Food was below average and it was just not that flavorful. For $300 and less than 10 dishes which is about $30 per dish, it is a bit absurd which I will never go back again. read more

We had a 70th birthday party for my brother in law. It was amazing! Food was good and the owner is always nice to us. We got to know each other and our family over many years. We had lobsters. Birds Nest, Salt and Pepper pork chop, HK steak, beef chow Mein, fish filet chow Mein , egg rolls, crab Rangoon, stuffed crab legs, crispy chicken, fried salt and pepper tofu, just too many to think of...we had 4 tables together and I think originally 5 or 6. Chinese food in a family friendly environment. Evergreen is one of the average restaurants in Chinatown surrounded by so many others. It has about what you expect from somewhere like this. Lots of things that come on rice, average flavor. The prices are kind of high mostly. I checked it out with the woman recently on an evening. Pretty average size place but there weren't many people inside. There's a few big tables. Menu is pretty typical of American Chinese. We each got the Bean Curd With Straw Mushrooms. It's about $13 for the only size. This is only among a couple of the vegetarian vegetarian items with any tofu. It's not much of a selection. The others only have vegetables. Anyway it was pretty good. The tofu was pretty crispy and had good texture. Hard to find a reason to not like it, but still not liking this enough to regularly be coming. It's pretty average for Chinese American food. There's lots of other places to choose so we'll try around for better ones before coming back here for the next visit. read more

I did not like the senior waitress asking me to save her some of my food for her to take home later to eat. Appears she eats the food from customers unfinished plates, but I have seen the employees eat at a table in the back near the kitchen. Totally unacceptable to be asked to save some of the food for the waitress. She acted as though it was common and appropriate to ask; no shame. I could not enjoy eating my food after that. I left a large portion of my food with a tip. Worse she "approved" of the portion I left her by smiling and saying, Thank-you ! Also, the dining area south side wall toward the back had splattered dried sauce (food) on it; not cleaned (been there for some time). Lastly, the food was not prepared the way I had asked. I wondered if the food was prepared to her approval to be taken home. The waitress stated she told the kitchen and to not order that again. Lol, problem solved ? Still, I paid the check and the waitress expected "her" tip. Like a vulture she kept circling my table looking for a tip. It was similar to the homeless individuals you see at intersections with their signs walking up to vehicles begging for money. The waitress only needed a sign. All in all, the most uncomfortable dining experience ever. I would not recommend Evergreen Restaurant to anyone because of the begging waitress, poor customer service to address food issues, undesirable food preparation and lack of cleanliness. read more

Unfortunately we were really disappointed with our experience today. The food here has always been good; however, customer service is sometimes lacking and today was especially poor. We placed an online order through their website at 2:34PM for a 5:00PM pickup (soup, appetizer, and two entrees). Upon arriving at 4:54PM we proceeded to have to wait u til 6:11PM until we finally had our food. We were told multiple times that it was coming right out, yet continued to have to wait. We returned after a long hiatus (6 years) to enjoy a post-funeral "light lunch" as it were advertised.  I was happy and pleasantly surprised to see friendly and accomodating owner Bing was still at it.  With Covid, you never really know what's up in the restaurant business, but I learned Bing toughed it out and never did close the doors here, yaay!  Our "light lunch" was excellent, high quality, and good valued Cantonese as we have always enjoyed here in the past.  This visit put Evergreen back on our shortlist for hosting that occasional big family meal.  All I can also add is that if this was a "light lunch" as described by our host, I'd be interested to know what a "big lunch" might look like because we were stuffed to the max after 9 totally delicious courses, ha! read more

I had not been here in a few years and the food was pretty good back then. Now it is horrible. We ordered sweet and sour shrimp and shrimp fried rice. Going to an authentic Chinese restaurant you can not expect much service and if you are able to find someone it still doesn't guarantee you will get what you requested. I attended a lunch for 60 people and the owner was working and simply did not add additional staff. It also took about an hour to get the 8 course meal started but once they did it all came out quickly. All I wanted was a glass of water but she said I would have to wait. She wanted to get the paying drinks out first. It really would have been easier to have set out the water and tea out. I haven't eaten here in over a decade but I will say the food was good but ladened with MSG. I was so thirsty as a result. It is kid friendly but there is no children's menu. The decor hasn't changed. I doubt I will be back except for family arranged events. read more

My mom loves coming to Evergreen Restaurant and suggested that we come here for early Lunar New Year dinner. We came on Thursday night, and there was a few tables that dined in, and the owner did her best to socially distance everyone which I can appreciate. The restaurant is located on the other side of Chinatown, so it's easier to find street parking. There was a bit of a wait for our food as they were understaffed but did their best. Went to the restaurant with high expectations only to be let down. Nobody there at 6PM, empty which was depressing. Portions are 2/3 of what they used to be. A drink listed at $6.95 was doubled in price up to $14.95 because I asked for a particular liquor- I call this gouging. What used to be a pkace to go for goid food at reasonable prices has turned into a depressing environment with only one waiter- why? Best Peking duck I've had lately. The skin was crisp which makes it different than say roast duck. Our server made the pancakes using chop sticks only. Last time I saw that performance was in Beijing. We also had egg drop soup, salt/pepper smelt, soft shell crab, dungeness crab, steamed fish with soy sauce sesame oil with sliced ginger and green onions. All were good. The steamed baby bok choy was over cooked. The service was excellent. There's a sincere concern on how our meal was moving along. We have gone here for multiple family receptions (both wedding/newborn/funeral) and come away saying the same thing.....fantastic food and great service. I will say that staffing is lower than in prior years, but with Covid, likely many restaurants have same issue. Fried rice/fried chicken with crispy wafers/chinese broccoli beef/fried fish filet/tofu & seafood soup/etc is always the best. Flavors have you saying "fantastic food". You can argue that the inside of the restaurant has been the same in my 30 years coming here, but when I think Authentic Cantonese style Chinatown food, this is the place. Locals with their families and out of neighborhood customers often drop by for a meal or take out because of the delicious variety of food. Beautifully appointed, the elegant restaurant has Asian inspired decorations including paintings of peacocks, pandas, and gold fish. There are colorful flowers in the corners. The staff understands English and Cantonese very well. You need to come see the menu with the some atypical but regional tasty options. This time a friend and I stopped by for a late lunch after exploring the exciting and fun Chinatown Summer Festival. The female Cantonese owner and friendly host greeted us and assigned us to a very clean table. My girlfriend has known her for years. Even the table cloth is decorated. We chose the beef short ribs and Asian veggies. Hot tea was available. The meal was very satisfying. This restaurant has the reputation of Asian Cheers except this is a restaurant where everyone knows your name with many long standing repeat customers. This is my families go to place whenever we are celebrating someone's birthday, New Years, full moon and etc. The service here is always good and the waitresses were always nice and friendly. This place is sometimes packed so it's better to reserve ahead of time for large groups. Came here for Chinese New Years with my family and relatives and ordered the usual family style dinner that consisted of their soup of the day,chicken, steamed fish, garlic shrimp, vegetable dishes, sweet and sour pork, short ribs, and the owner gave an order of abalone in the house. Even though my aunt didn't order the walnut shrimp, that is a very good dish. And for dessert they have red bean soup and their yummy mango pudding in a shape of a fish!
