Service was ok. Food was decent. Wine list wasn't bad. Prawn appetizer was sizeable but the prawns lacked flavor. The coconut curry on the snapper was way too overpowering for the fish. Two friends and myself were heading back to the east bay from a long drive from crescent city. We we're hungry and needed to stop for gas. We were in the mood for sushi but the wait time was way too long and we really needed to get back home. We stumbled upon this place. We sat at the bar instead of waiting for a table. This place is way overpriced. The food looked appealing but the taste was horrible. We ordered oysters but never received it. One ordered the clam chowder, another ordered the dungeoness crab fettuccine and I ordered the fish and chips. My food was not good. Fries were cold and there was more breading on the fish than there was fish. Very disappointing. My friend stated that his clam chowder tasted more like cream of mushroom soup from a can. My other friend was not impressed with his fettuccine. Upon receiving the check we noticed that the oysters were still on the receipt. It was removed from the bill. I will say that the staff was quite friendly and attentive but it still doesn't count for the mediocre food. read more

We are life-long residents of Eureka and have visited the Sea Grill on several occasions over the years. However, due to COVID, we've not dined out in some time. We decided to visit the Sea Grill last night for dinner. We left very disappointed. We had the filet mignon, halibut special, crab wontons, drinks and dessert. It was an expensive dinner ($180 out the door). The service was average, the filet was the toughest filet I've ever had and with little flavor, the halibut was over-cooked and dry and the cocktails below average. The crab wontons were really good as was our dessert, a chocolate torte. BUT...the prices are WAY too high for the quality of the food. The main courses were not good in spite of being expensive. It's too bad as this used to be a reliable dinner restaurant. read more

We had a party for 40 guests last night. We rented the banquet room and got our own bartender. Everyone loved this event and we got rave reviews about the service and the food. We look forward to having many more events at this lovely restaurant. We also eat here with smaller groups on the main dining room and have never been disappointed. The Sea Grill was open on Monday evening when we arrived in Eureka (not all restaurants there are open that day!) After parking on the street, we entered and were immediately seated as we did call for reservations. The room decor was a bit dated and lack luster, although the paintings on one side of the room were quite attractive with the subject matter of each centered around the sea and fishing industry. The table arrangements were thankfully far enough apart to encourage conversation. This was a busy place, and many tables turned over once or twice during our meal. Our waitress was quite efficient, attentive when we needed something and checking on our progress periodically. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine choices. The presentation of courses was nicely paced. The dinner roll was promptly served, followed by our wine selections. The salad bar option accompanying my meal provided several selections of healthy choices of vegetables to add to the mixed greens that I found very satisfying. My order of Snapper Almadine' was very good with a profusion of sliced almonds covering the snapper, zucchini and red peppers sautéed just right and a small serving of rice pilaf. The meal was filling but not overly generous. All in all, a very nice evening with good food and attentive service! read more

Great food but the service was not so great. The calamari was tender and lightly breaded. The seared tuna app was perfectly done. The shrimp cocktail came with tiny salad shrimp. I'm not a fan of those and would rather have 4-5 larger shrimp. The filet mignon was perfectly cooked and tender. The halibut fish and chips were crisp. We were seated and drink orders taken but we were given one drink menu for a party of 10. When we politely asked for more menus the pregnant waitress was rude. Ok, maybe hormones are raging. Then we were not given food menus and had to ask for those as well. I can understand if it was a busy weekend that the service might be stretched to its limits but it was midweek and not very busy. If it were not for the service I would give 5 stars. We will try again and hope for a better experience. read more

Very disappointed with Sea Grill dinner. When I pay that much for food I want it to thrill me. Crab fettuccini should not be salty and have half button mushrooms. Really. And the service is terrible. I've never had a stellar meal here but had an out of town guest who wanted to, so we went. First you have to pass the accusatory hostess, "Do you have a reservation?" in a hurried voice at 4:30 in the evening with half the tables open. Then our waitress, who is half owner, flings the menus at us an comes to the table three times with "Do you know what you want?" before we'd even lifted the menus - within about two minutes. This lady seems to have a problem communicating in the listening department - too complex to go into here. The table across from us was occupied by a well dressed travelling couple, elegant linen casual and all, the woman beautiful in a Bianca Jagger style. When they expressed a desire to eat our local fresh fish they were informed it is all fresh frozen. Lovely. The waitress neglected to engage them and suggest the kumamoto oysters. Eureka is the largest producer of these in the world. You can see the bay from the window of the restaurant! This is just poor customer service and a shame on our city. Grow up Sea Grill if you ever want to be more than a backwater excuse for a nice restaurant. There are plenty of Eureka socialite types who adore this place, leave it to them I say. Atmosphere is nice, very pleasant. the remodel on the salad bar is good too. Food: Steamer clams and wasabi caviar oyster appetizer were very good. Shrimp grainy and tiny on the fettuccine. My seared ahi was left on the warmer too long and was no longer even rare much less raw inside. Sent back and returned less cooked, they've change the sauce to a bland afterthought. This is one of the best places in Humboldt co! The raspberry lemon drop is one of the best drinks in town. The sea grill chowder is absolutely amazing, the bread and scampi and salad bar are all amazing. We tried this place in December and we're very impressed. This time, for our 11th anniversary we were totally disappointed. I would give it one star but the waitress was great. The prime rib (petite cut) is $33. It came to the table at room temperature and fatty with no spices. It was dry and tough. No au jus was served with the meat. This was NOT our experience the last time we were there. It was very busy this time and it took awhile to seat us which was no bother but the food arrived cold and bland. The salad bar was okay but nothing was truly cold. Today my husband has terrible diarrhea since 4 am. He had the petite cut with scampi. The coconut amaretto pie had some toasted coconut on top but tasted like lemon chiffon (???). Not a good experience. It's my experience with cooking prime rib, if it is not allowed to rest after cooking and is cut to soon it will loose all its juices, perhaps this is what happened. But in Reality there was no spice rub on the outside so I salted my meat and it did nothing for the flavor. We are done read more

Theee meals over 4 days. All of them perfect. The food is so good that we didn't tire of the flavors despite repeated immersion. Why is this 3.5 stars? Beats me? Definitely in the top five restaurants on the lost coast and, perhaps, the best overall seafood restaurant we've ever experienced in a long and privileged life. Our waitress was so wonderful and patient as we enjoyed our meal over two hours. The seafood is delicious and the stuffed baked potatoes were such a treat! Food was fantastic....service, not so much. We went to the Sea Grill for my birthday dinner a few nights ago and were seated at a table that was literally falling apart and not set. Half of the table was visibly slanted. My party ordered various signature cocktails and they came in mismatched water glasses. They informed us that they were out of proper martini glasses. All this would be fine and excusable if it were a more casual restaurant but when you pay $70 for your dinner and $13 for your cocktail, you expect a certain level of service and ambiance with it. Had a large business dinner gathering here a few months back and had never been to the restaurant before. We started with the calamari and oysters as an appetizer , and while I've never been a big fan of either one, I am now! I've had a fair amount at other places, but this place is truly exceptional! The calamari was fresh, tender, and had great favor. Normally I have an oyster or two, but these were so amazing I went around to our other tables to get a few more from those who don't touch the stuff - so glad there are people that don't indulge! Thank you. For dinner I had a bowl of the chowder soup and salmon steak. Both clearly were one of the best I've ever enjoyed. The chowder had generous portions of clams and the base was delicious, whereas the salmon was a healthy portion and was done perfectly -- very moist and flavorful. Bland Mediocricy ! A couple of years ago I enjoyed a very nice meal here that was extremely well seasoned. This was despiteIs the lackluster service and the cheap 1980s interiors and uncozy and outdated décor and stuffy old vibe. Unfortunately there must have been staff changes during Covid and a new cook or cooks are on staff because what we received was completely unseasoned, no herbs and spices, no finesse. My husband and I came here for our honeymoon dinner. We were met by a wonderful hostess and a very sweet waitress. We had Pacific Oysters for an appetizer which were super flavorful. The clam chowder that came with the dinner was good and creamy. I had ordered the filet mignon with lobster tail and my husband ordered one of the dinner specials. The filet was cooked perfectly and the lobster was good. Everything hat we had was delicious. The waitress brought us an ice cream for dessert for our honeymoon. Still sitting in here as we pay our bill. The place is lovely, service is a bit slow but everyone is short-staffed, so we are not in a hurry :) Hubs ordered the macadamia crusted halibut which was good! He got the chowder for his first course and it was blander than he likes, but still good. I had the Dungeness crab linguine. It was HEAVY on the pasta and cream and I found maybe a teaspoon of crab in it! I complained when the waiter came by, but he told me the crab was premeasured. I ate a few bites of the pasta and it was rich and tasted like fettuccine Alfredo - I wanted the crab so I went looking for pieces of it - and I found a couple about half the size of my pinky fingernail. And they had shells attached. I ate the mushrooms - I could find them! My salad was fine, and the chocolate pecan torte was delicious. But I did not even eat my entree - the bowl was returned full. So they gave us a $10 discount on a $43 entree that I did not eat! I would have been way happier ordering the Dungeness crab cocktail appetizer as my entree - I really wanted to enjoy some Dungeness crab - we don't get that where I come from. I spoke up again about how disappointed I was and they redid the bill to remove my entree. They need to remove that one from their menu not just our bill. So, if I was going to be in Eureka again I would go back, but would be much more careful when ordering! read more

We've been traveling, and found this restaurant. It looked good and had a nice menu. The pictures were taken in low light and thought it might be too nice for our limited attire. Not to worry! Found energy type of clothing from very nice to t-shirts! Corkage was only $15, which was quite reasonable. Food was good. I had the scallops and hubby had the fried oysters. Both great. Limited desserts, but we were so full that it didn't matter. Seemed like a lot of locals, with a mix of out of towers. Old school decor, which was ok. Fantastic restaurant with helpful staff and terrific food. This grill has been serving the local community for several decades, and they know what they're doing. Try some local oysters and crab, you won't be disappointed. The menu has a lot of choices, but is not overly stacked so as to flummox you. Nice interior space, it's a little bigger than it appears at first. There's a full bar against the wall which is a great place to not only get a drink from, but to also eat at. Then the food.........well food was very bland and flavorless, steak and lobster was extremely overpriced, needed tons of salt to get some sort of flavor. My fiance and i were walking by and decided to give this restaurant a try. The aroma once you walk in immediately smells like fish. Coming from Los Angeles that's usually a red flag but against our better judgement we gave it a try anyway. By far we were the youngest couple in there by easily 30 years. The decorations look outdated but it has a cute grandma's house feel to it. The hostess was very nice and sat down. Our waitress however, didnt seem too pleased to see us. It could have been that we werent dressed up but by any means we are not homely looking. I wore a pair of BCBG flats worth $130, a Louis Vuitton Purse worth $800, and a sweatshirt by Ralph Lauren worth $80 with yoga pants. Both my partner and i ordered fish. He had the cajun cod and i had the halibut. Our waitress highly recommended the salad bar with our entree and went with her suggestion. To be honest- its really no different from the salad bar at Sizzlers. It was good nonetheless. When our entree's came my fish was over cooked and dry. However i really enjoyed the rice pilaf. My fiance's cod had a kick to it and he finished all of his. By the time we came home my fiance wasnt feeling well. In about 2 hours he threw up dinner. He's a doctor and works at St Joseph (the local hospital) so it couldnt have been anything he ate earlier. We really think the cause of his food poising was The Sea Grill. I'm super upset about The Sea Grill, it looks nice, it's ALWAYS packed inside, and always busy.. So you'd assume the food was excellent. Well, at least I assumed it was going to be.. I had been warned by a gentlemen not to eat there, as he lived in the apartments above the restaurant and said they were infested with COCKROACHES! But, whatever. I gave it a try. BAD IDEA! From the get go it was alright, the service was decent. The hostess was nice- not overly nice, but not rude like a lot of them around here. We were seated and then greeted promptly buy our waitress- she took our drink order and mentioned the specials, blah blah. I ended up ordering the crab cake appetizer, 2 crab cakes for $15.95 - wait, let me back track a bit.. I ended up getting the salad bar with my dinner, my husband got the clam chowder.. I went ahead and got up and got my salad, in passing the waitress said to my husband, "I better go get your soup sense she decided to get her salad already.." WELL damn, when was I suppose to get my salad? Should I have waited? HAHA! Mind your business. Anyway, back to the appetizer, these were some sad sad sad crab cakes. Barely any crab, they were less then a 1/4 inch thick, and had what appeared to be tons of caramelized onions and way too much breading. Tasted like mush! And was served on top of some depressed looking shredded iceberg lettuce that had seen better days! Then our food arrived, horrible plating. Everything looked dead, no pun intended! All brown and gross, and once again, mushy looking. That and it appeared to have sat under the heat lamp for FAR too long. Although our waitress (who was NICE!) said she picked it up the second they put it up.. The FILET MIGNON was ordered medium rare, and came out medium well, if not well done. And charred! If you want to charge over $30 a plate, you might want to find a grill cook who knows his meat temps? I ordered a seared ahi... This fish looked like it had been mangled.. Infact my fish looked like, felt like, cut like, and had the texture of steak.. Over seasoned and burn.. Way overcooked to be served as "rare." I'm really so disgusted that I don't even want to waste my time writing this review.. The only good thing I can say is that our waitress was nice... Gave us a whole entire $10 off our $80 bill.. We didn't even take more then 2 bites off each of our plates. Save your time and eat elsewhere! read more

I called about an hour ahead of our arrival and I put in a reservation. We arrived at 6:20 with our reservation being at 6:30. The woman who I assume is the owner said it would be just a minute. We ordered a few drinks at the bar and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. We finally got to our table at about 6:50. The staff was hustling around and busy. We were informed that the kitchen was slightly behind that's why it took so long to get a table. Red flag! The salad bar looked great and the selections were pretty good for this restaurant. I don't know where anyone learns the definition of service. The server immediately came to our table expecting us to order entrees. I'm no dummy and that shit pisses me off so We ordered our beverages first. The next time server came back I ordered soup and appetizers. Finally the last time we ordered entrees. In this order 1:drinks 2:appetizers, soups, salads, other drinks. Make customers feel welcomed not rushed. 3: entrees and main courses 4: deserts and or desert drinks. This is how a nice restaurant should operate. We ordered the baked oyster appetizer, which although very bacony was pretty good. The clam chowder was mediocre and very bland. I ordered Petrale Sole Dorè. My girlfriend ordered salmon and my other guest ordered the scallops. Petrale Sole was good. The salmon overcooked and dry like an old shitty pork chop. The scallops although very moist and tender tasted very fishy and were probably old and ready to turn. It took a while to get our food. It didn't appear that this establishment had an expediter. I recommend restructuring and reassigning tasks. Bottom line if you go here don't expect to be impressed. Very expensive for what you get. The quality is on the low side. The service is on the amateur side. Nice place? Yes. But everything else was a letdown. read more

This was recommended by the owner of the B & B we stayed at...well, it was one of the ones recommended...and we really wanted some seafood, and this one seemed to fit the bill...on paper...well...kind of sort of in real too...but I should slow down a bit... This is a place, at least on the night that we were there, to go for the show...I watched them turn a table of 12 to two rounds of 5 in less than 5 minutes, the waitresses while trying to serve a room full of customers, bussing and breaking down the tables...carrying the tables and chairs over their heads through the occupied tables, carefully avoiding hitting anyone in the head... We tried to slow the pace down "we are in no hurry" I said when she came to take our order..."you want to flag me down when you want to order your second course or you want me to "pace it" for you...I can do that" she said..."when you get up to do the salad bar, I'll put your main course order in"...OK...so we order. Our appetizer, Calimari was well prepared, tender and tasty. I asked where the bathroom was..."are you going to the salad bar" she inquired..."No, just the bathroom"; when I returned, I was told dinner was on the way...ok...now I'm onto the salad bar. I have to remember to order my dressing and sauces on the side. I really do...I ordered the black cod, which was a nice fish, with so much sauce, I wish I could have found it. My husband ordered Crab Legs, which, down in California, would be apparently the bottom parts of the crab leg cause these legs were HUGE...tender and tasty. The sides are ordinary; the food is nothing special...but, on this night, if you wanted to be in and out, you could have been, in and out. I am in full agreement with the salad bar comment; what's that all about? A salad bar in a 'fine dining' establishment? Okay... The food is all awful-I mean, truly awful. I have never eaten one decent item from there. The fish is overcooked and flavorless. The lobster is also overcooked, and it was bitter and tough. Its your typical wannabe fancy, molded rice pilaf, bagged steamed cauliflower and carrot fare. Seeing as how the place isn't very cheap, I think each meal should come with a complimentary shot of Pepto Bismol. The only reason I'd ever go there again is if they offered me a free meal and I was feeling a little 'backed up', because you are almost certainly guaranteed horrible stomach issues following a meal at Sea Grill.
