The station is right at the edge of downtown so your a few steps away from cafes, hotels, and other easy amenities. The station is clean and nice but the restrooms are locked (my Lyft driver said they had too many problems with people shooting up in there) so just ask the employees for the door code). The location is safe and rideshare can easily get to you. There's a vegetarian friendly restaurant 30 feet away, so it was a good place to get lunch before heading to our hotel. (Try their rolls with the butter because the butter is freaking good!) read more

Now I can say we've been to Eugene, OR, home of the new Big Ten university, the mighty Ducks of Oregon. The Amtrak station in Eugene, OR was our midday stop on day two of our Pacific coast journey from LA to Seattle. It was designated a smoking break stop, which meant we were there for 15 minutes. It was 40 degrees outside, and rainy Leap Day 2024. The station has a large outdoor parking lot and a red brick building that handles checked bags from the train. read more

Definitely too entitled operators. One Karen-style singled my daughter's service animal and denied us access to our transportation with excuses of a made up reason. A happy barking animal when playing ball is not a good service animal. With my daughter's neurological disorder she apparently doesn't realize the need that the issue entails. So big thumbs down, especially when other Amtrak employees chimed in to support her bad decision to deny my daughters service animal instead of allowing this entitled and stubborn worker the opportunity to learn from her mistake of labeling us and using personal dislikes to target people she doesn't like. read more

I just did my first train ride ( since I was a child) up to Seattle this last weekend. Now knowing how easy and convenient taking the train is, I will never be doing that drive ever again. I can't speak to the actual station itself as we ordered our tickets online. But everything was super smooth sailing. We didn't have to deal with annoying TSA regarding our luggage. The seats in coach were more spacious than flying anywhere in coach. There is wifi as well as outlets readily available at every seat. Since the train leaves Eugene at 5:30 am, we got to enjoy a colorful sunrise as we trekked further North. Then on the journey back, after most of the passengers got off in Portland, my husband and I had an entire train car to ourselves. Loved this experience and I am looking forward to scheduling more trips up to Portland and Seattle. read more

The Eugene station reminds me of a tiny, hole in the wall town because of how nondescript it is. The depot is small, very basic; a waiting room and a parking lot. The train stops feet away from the waiting room, which largely contributes to that feel. I've taken trains both north and south from here and they never seem to run on time. It made sense the one time when I was coming home from school in California, on a winter break where we got stopped for a while in the mountains in snow. You're supposed to be here about 45 minutes early for departure. But I'm sure it's never left on time, so maybe Eugene's just in a time warp or something. Parking is for a fee in the lot, and there's metered parking on the surrounding streets. However, it literally takes 20 minutes or fewer to get almost anywhere in Eugene, so if you don't mind waiting or you can send a text to your ride, parking probably won't be necessary. The Jackalope is the closest restaurant to the station at only a few yards from the station, and they are open from lunch on. Black Wolf Supper Club is across the street from the station, but they don't open until early evening. However, on 5th Street or at Fifth Street Public Market you'll find some restaraunts depending upon when you're here, and how much time you have. read more

We decided to try taking a trip on the Amtrak Cascades trains. Our northbound train Cascades #504 was scheduled to depart at 7:45 AM. We arrived at the station at about 7:15 AM. Looking for a parking space was confusing because there was almost no signage. We finally asked someone about parking and he pointed out to us the location of the station parking lots. After a little searching, I found the kiosk to pay for parking. Clearly the user interface was designed for an engineer not a real person. It took multiple attempts by myself and another patron until we finally got the machine to take our money and give us our parking receipts for the correct times. The station was built in 1908 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is small and very quiet and comfortable, the way that railroad stations should be. The staff was friendly and helpful. We had not been there very long before our train rolled into the station track. We were riding Business Class which was almost directly in front of the station door. I will seriously consider taking the train next time I am headed to Seattle. read more

Me and my girlfriend where going back home to California from Seattle and got kicked off the train in Eugene, Oregon for cussing outside on one of the stops. when he told us we where not allowed back on the train because I was endangering him and his passengers and shut the train door in my face and left me and my girlfriend in Oregon. This place is so cozy and sweet. The majority of these reviews are about trains running late which really isn't this stations fault. If you want updates on your train go onto safari and search Amtrak train tracker. If you wonder why your train is always late, it's probably because there are other freight trains that have the right away do the passenger trains must stop. Another factor could be the countless stops the train makes on its way to the destination, another one could be that the engines Amtrak uses are incredibly outdated (I'm talking about you, GE genisis). They always brake down and will forever run late by 45 minutes. Personally if your heading north to Seattle, you 100% want to use the cascades. They have updates engines including the F59PHI which has the highest on time rating in Amtrak engine history and the seats are more comfy. Note that the back door is always locked so you have to go to the front of the station to enter. read more

One of the last bastions of comfortable commuting is that slow rolling relic of a bygone era, the train. I don't like to drive and buses don't cut it on anything longer than a crosstown jaunt. For my money, Amtrak is still a heck of a deal from the Eug to PDX. Heck from Portland to Seattle ain' t that bad. The check in is shorter and the ride less jarring compared to short flights in the Northwest. Anything further is for folks with time to kill and Social Security check coming regularly in the mail. The Eugene Depot is right downtown so any delay is easily sipped away at the Jackalope Lounge or Electric Station bar. This comes in handy more often than not because let's face it, Amtrak is not exactly a schedule to set your watch by. The building is beautiful with classic deep overhanging eaves protecting the quaint brick exterior. The long wood benches inside are well crafted and comfortable enough to sit on. There are even these cool round bay projections on the train side to be able to look down the track and see if the train is coming without having to step outside. I hope there is some stimulus money earmarked to revitalizing the rail lines in the Northwest because the current system needs an update for the 21st century. More efficient trains and proper maintenance could make this the viable alternative transportation it was meant to be. read more

Overall a very nice option to travel, though a bit unorganized and the cars are showing some age. The hay day of train travel seems to be over but I think the train is still a very enjoyable experience that has been on time the last 3 times I've travelled. The Amtrak app works well and E-ticket worked well though maybe a bit more would be good. Wifi is not as fast as my cell data and Google Map is great for knowing your location while on the train. The customer service staff does seem a bit over worked and customer service is about par for mass transit but it looks like they try. The Starlight train is a vastly different experience than the Cascades, though some of the parlour cars are now retired on the Starlight. The Starlight Business Class had much more leg room, two stories and better seats than the Business class Cascades. Business Class on the Cascades (commuter train classified) seems to be very similar to coach and a bit expensive as an overall percentage of the ticket cost but you have a bit more ticket change flexibility with Business class and a $3 discount at the Bistro car. Each car is semi-assigned to pickup and destination to help in organizing and the trains seem to fill up pretty well in the larger destinations. Eugene Amtrak station is notorious for running late. I've spent hours waiting around to pick visitors up from the train station because the trains continually get delayed. I also do not like the fact there isn't free parking anywhere nearby. You can either pay to park, or take a risk and park in a 15 minute only spot for longer than 15 minutes without paying (because trust me, you'll be waiting for the train to arrive for more than 15 minutes if you get here on time.) The station is very nice and clean, but not open all the time. My gripe is the criminals who run the parking. They have an antiquated vending machine that is not lit properly and is very hard to use. I invariably end up being charged for several day tickets or double charged for what I want because the stinking machine pumps out tickets before you are done entering your times. The times are only changeable by scrolling through minute by minute to set your desired time and the damned thing charges you at unpredictable moments, printing and charging for tickets that you do not want. I think the parking there is run by crooks or the mafia who make it impossible to simply buy your parking. A complete rip off. And try writing to get a refund. A friend of mine setup the Chemult scenic route months ago for 11 of us on May 11th. The train was almost on time by like 10 mins. They person checking our tickets did really well putting all of us together. As we boarded, within 10 mins, the train was on its way. We then headed to the Lounge car and there we sat as we took in all the scenery for the 2 hour trip. We were celebrating a birthday and the weather was in full shine mode. We were a loud group but we were very nice and apologetic for the most part. We even tried to be reasonable with one of the passengers that proceeded to call us an ass for being so loud. We all figured if he wanted it quiet, he needed to sit in the seat he paid for. We didn't let that get to us. The conductor was even excited we were livening up the car that day. They even earned a cupcake from the birthday girl. We had a great time. Thank you so much for having fun with us. read more

Their policy regarding unaccompanied minors is onerous and and stupid. I have to arrive 60 minutes early with my 15 year old, have them interviewed, and wait at the station until the train leaves? I can't send my 12 year old with my 16 year old even though she could drive? Also, you have to call them on the phone to book travel for unaccompanied minors age 13-15 instead of using their website like it is 2015. By contrast Greyhound has a much more reasonable unaccompanied minor policy (with regard to ages, at least). read more

$48 for roundtrip fare to PDX. Comfortable seats with plenty of leg room. Wi-Fi available. I can only speak about the one and only trip I've taken so far, but the time to board to when the train left PDX was just plain fast. Not enough time to get impatient, and that held true for the three stops made between PDX and EUG. The train in one compound word: carefree. We couldn't get a train during the time-slot we had available to leave EUG, so we had to ride the bus up to PDX, which wasn't near as entertaining as the train was, so good luck to you to nab a train both ways! read more

I think Amtrak Cascades is the bomb too! -Bob Dole wanted to boycott Money Train because it was too violent. Bob Dole also threatened cut backs "from A to Z, from Amtrak to zoological studies..." After Dole threatened these cutbacks on the Senate floor he had some warm milk and took a nap. I drink warm milk and take naps when I ride Amtrak Cascades! -It once took Bob Dole 7 hours to get rid of an erection. It takes 7 hours for me to ride Amtrak Cascades from Eugene to Seattle! The train station is very clean, and well maintained and the staff is always really friendly. It's in a really good part of town that is surrounded by restaurants and bars, and a vegan bakery that is really great. There really isn't anything else to say other than if you are traveling out of town to the North or South up and down the coast it is definitely worth it to take the train. Train accommodations are great, however they have not taken time to provide training to employees about courtesies. Stations are beautiful and clean. However, a flaw exist. For instance, please Amtrak Porter, make an announcement about arrival at location before it arrives, so we can get off the train! Recently I traveled from California to Oregon. At the Sacramento stop, the incoming train was nearly 5 hours late. Needless to say, this caused many problems for all passengers. The person picking me up in Eugene cannot drive in the dark. So, I no longer had a ride. I was told there was a bus, but there were no signs or information. The first employee I asked was very rude and would not give me any information. She just said Amtrak is not connected with the bus. If there was a bus, I missed it. This left me stranded in a strange town. I had a hard time getting information on a hostel, alternative transportation, anything. As it got close to closing time, another employee, Jessica, noticed me and came over to inquire if I was ok. She assisted in arrangements for a taxi and I was able to get to my destination. She gave assistance on my return trip also, when I encountered another situation. This is a review for Jessica, not the station or company. She is a real asset to Amtrak. I make it a point to let supervisors know when I receive superior treatment. But in this case, I was only given a phone number. Due to a disability (hearing related), I am not able to communicate over a phone. This seemed the best alternative. I hope her supervisors are aware of what a jewel they have in her. read more

This review is as much about Amtrak in general as this particular station. Our first real experience taking the train long distance had mostly good points, but one particularly bad one. For our anniversary DLW and I did a getaway to San Francisco, and I suggested we take Amtrak rather than try to drive or fly. The attraction initially was that it's so much cheaper than any other way, but there are also the facts that you don't need to drive in the city or spend $50 a day on parking, or at least that much taking a taxi from the airport. We booked well in advance, and got a good price. The train was 30 minutes late getting into Eugene, but we settled in for our ride quickly enough. Seats are roomy and give a lot of legroom compared to airline coach seats, plus they have electrical outlets at every seat, so no danger of running out of charge on your tablet or phone. Food and drinks are pretty pricey and not very appetizing, so we brought our own. The Starlighter runs during the night, so we slept as much as we could. Fifteen hours was pushing the limit of what we could tolerate, but it was an adventure. The train had to stop during the night for a freight train, so we arrived 1.5 hours late in Emeryville, then took the shuttle into town, included in the price of our ticket. It was the return trip that was the problem. The shuttle got us to the station in plenty of time, but the train was delayed for reasons not made clear to us. We waited until almost 5 am with no concessions except for some vending machines before finally getting an explanation: a couple of car switches and a freight train delay. There was only a single apology from the manager, and no make-good except for a small snack box. We were seven hours late getting home. I'm torn between a three and four-star rating, but since being on time wasn't critical to me, I'll be generous. Amtrak is cheap and romantic, but not reliable if you need to keep to a schedule. If you have the time to burn, by all means use it. Just be prepared for a long wait. It helps if you're good at sleeping on a plastic chair. read more

If you have a perfect life and perfect health it's a fine way to travel, however God forbid you have any problems with your health I recommend you take alternate travel if your able. I am a disabled citizen like it says on my ticket. The staff is uncaring and unreasonable cruel, mocking me for not getting off the train in time. Regardless of the fact that my traveling companion was in a leg brace in addition to me listing I had disabilities on my ticket. These people have never heard of the ADA. Life isn't fair but the American Disabilities Act is an attempt to level the field. I am not visibly disabled to most, it shouldn't matter. I am on SSD that's all it should take. I know intolerance back in fashion but picking on the disabled is about as low as it gets. read more

i really enjoy Amtrak - it's a great way to get to Seattle and Portland. I took a sleeper car back from Salinas CA and really enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Staff was very helpful. We were late getting to Eugene 5:30 instead of noon, but I was able to take a cab home. I hope the people who complain about delays understand that the majority of the delays are not caused by Amtrak. The problem is that the tracks are owned by Union Pacific. Union Pacific is interested in moving freight and not interested in passenger service. So until we can convince the government to build a separate rail service such as in Japan, Germany, France, Austria, etc. we are just going to have to put up with delays due to Union Pacific's lack of concern for Amtrak passengers. read more

I have been an amtrak rider for almost 15 yeaars now , and I've had mostly good experiences. You just have to watch them closely if you buy your ticket in person. A couple years ago I accompanied my friend from Mexico to the counter to help with Spanish interpretation. My friend paid for his ticket with cash, and I paid for mine on a card. A week later I discovered that the woman pocketed my friend's cash and charged me for both tickets on my card. I tried to dispute the charges with the card company but amtrak insisted that I had paid for my friend's ticket, and I had no proof that my friend had used cash. Doing it over again I would have had my friend give the cash to me, but I would have never imagined that amtrak employees would do something like that. My 38 dollar lesson. I've definitely had more expensive lessons before. Digital payments will hopefully reduce this sort of thing in the future. read more

The restaurants around this station has upscale prices. It seems a bit high for a college town. Didn't have time for a sit down dinner, but there isn't even a Subway or Jack in The Box nearby. Not much else around except a bar that is in sight of the platform. read more

There were 7 of us scheduled to ride round trip from Eugene to Seattle. We were pretty excited as this was a first train ride for all of us. Train was scheduled to leave at 5:30 am. The instructions on the website say to arrive 30 minutes early. We were 40 minutes early. The office didn't even open until 5:10. So now we are only 20 minutes before departure. As we unpack our car to check in we hear over a loud speaker our leg from Portland to Seattle is cancelled and there is no alternate transportation provided. So now we have to figure out how we are getting to Seattle. We have a hotel and activities paid for and some non refundable. Don't get me wrong, we understood this was a possibility, we've heard how unreliable the train is. So immediately 2 of the people in our party head to the office for information. Of course there is a line and remember we are only 20 minutes before departure. They learned our options and we choose to ride to Portland, rent a car and drive the rest of the way. Immediately head to check bags. One of the rudest men I've ever encountered was standing next to the train smoking a cigarette. We ask where to check bags and he snapped it's too late now just take them with you. Then proceeds to shut the train door behind is before 2 of our party gets boarded. I ran up the train, as he is doors shutting ahead of me until i finally beat him to a door and informed him we had 2 more people. He said too bad they are late. He was an ASS! It was not our fault the train was cancelled or that we had 20 minutes rather than 30 and he couldn't wait 2 more minutes to let them board! Did I mention he was an ass?
