First I have to say the service was excellent. Very friendly and really good. Party of six at our table and everyone was pretty happy. The apps were good. I can't speak for everyone else but I wanted to say my meal wasn't great (fried chicken) and when the service person came to pick up our food I was asked in how it was and gave my honest opens didn't like to do it. He took off the cost on our bill and it was such a great thing. My husband had the burger which was so good. Just have to say overall great experience and highly recommend. Really cool and unique atmosphere. Our waitress was extremely friendly and gave great recommendations for the menu. I had the caesar salad and she said to add cornbread croutons and hold the toast is normally comes with. It was a great addition to the salad. Lots of flavors and a reasonable amount of dressing. DON'T EVEN BOTHER COMING IF YOU HAVE AN ALLERGY!!!!!!!!!! I came here this weekend with my sister who is severely allergic to sesame and tree nuts. This was noted on our reservation AND mentioned to our waiter. No problems were brought up (no mention of the potential of cross-contamination or ingredient issues). One bite into the chicken wings and my sister had a terrible reaction resulting in having to call the ambulance and a severe anaphylaxic shock. NO ONE on this restaurant's team even admitted to any wrongdoings or noted that there was a SESAME PASTE (Tahiti) in the wings until many phone calls later. The hushpuppies were sweet, like donuts. The mussels, while good enough, were swimming in a very salty broth that made the toast soaked in it inedible. We came here over the weekend for a quick lunch bite. I can't speak for everyone in the group but I ordered a burger. My issue with the burger was pretty simple. Overtoasting of the bun. Why are so many places toasting the bun so much? Its odd to have a hamburger with a crunchy outside. Everything spills. You can't really taste the nuance of the bread and makes everything seem drier. I'm kind of like a burger snob as I love a good burger. But this was a mediocre burger at best. I think it would have been much better if the bun was either not toasted at all or very lightly toasted. Service was good. My bloody mary was okay. The mix was a little too strong for my taste as I like more of the EtOH in my drink. They have a coming soon list on the draft. Which really seems like a tease. Who cares what drink will be coming soon to the place? I want to know what is at the restaurant now. Odd. read more

Inconsistently is Engine Room's biggest issue. I want so badly to enjoy the food here, I've been very pleased at their sister restaurant Oyster Club. When Engine Room first opened and we went in with friends for a quick dinner before Lantern Light Tours at the Seaport, my impression was it was a good spot for burgers and craft brews, since we don't go out too often with burgers in mind it was a few years before we returned. During our next visit the menu seemed to have expanded beyond burgers and our party of eight ordered divers items I don't specifically recall but my salad entree and others sides were so salty they were inedible, my salad was sent back, the others sides went uneaten. I wasn't surprised to turn around and see a string of young chefs, which is great, I don't want to be ageist but what is it with this trend of hand broadcasting waaay too much salt?! That night we ordered a couple of bottles of wine and cocktails, we left a little buzzy and hungry shortly thereafter. Not a great dinner experience, the whole thing was a little irritating but the menu did have potential, if only the execution could be better! Shortly before Covid I hit the jackpot, the lamb burger and the lemongrass muscles we shared were insanely delicious! I never stopped thinking about those muscles! Here we are a year later and the restaurants are fully open, we went straight for the muscles! I think the lemongrass they use is local (maybe hothouse) and is not in season yet, but they were offering a classic Narragansett larger and garlic steam. It should have been a solid choice, the muscles were clean and succulent but there was little detectable garlic, they were bland in their beer bath, skunked again! The real dog of the day was the oyster po boy, it had a fabulous sounding description but what showed up was 5 flavorless oysters on a couple of carrot matchsticks in a hotdog bun and little cup of fries. The whole thing was just so small and dry with literally a few strips of slaw under the oysters, it was ludicrous. Had the slaw been in a small condiment ramekin on the side it would have worked, they should be humiliated to serve this at a 24. price point, it's just silly. My companion had the chopped salad, it looked great. Bottom line is Engine Room is a real gamble, their biggest flaw is their of lack consistency, I'll be back with a friend or two but won't risk bringing a group. read more

I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to write a review, as I have frequented this place whenever I am in the area, over the past few years. Usually I sit at the bar, which is gorgeous, and is a really good vibe on Saturday nights. This past Saturday I had an exceptional experience, which made me realize it was about time. My friend and I went to the bar for a drink & a snack. We both had espresso martinis, which were actually cold brew martinis, since they don't have espresso, which at first I was turned off by the idea. But they did not disappointment, maybe even better than an espresso. We also just ordered french fries as we had previously eaten, but they were honestly some of best I've ever had. The woman who ran our food was also nice enough to grab us a few different dipping sauces which was much appreciated. Nick is such a great bartender, and has taken care of us the majority of times we've been in. He is so friendly & makes the best drinks. I can't wait to go back this summer and try some of the drinks from the tiki menu. They also have a great brunch & I remember about a year ago, I had an amazing peanut butter pie for dessert here. Food has started to slump. Some of the more notable dishes are now poorly executed or have had inexplicable alterations. The Cobb Salad used to be the best salad in town on the back of a flavorful and moist sauteed chicken breast. This has been replaced with a roast chicken that is so dry it is difficult to swallow. The hamburger hash - basically a deconstructed hamburger served in a skillet over potatoes - used to be finished with a sunny side up egg that served to add moisture and richness to the dish. Without the egg it is now a dry pile of overcooked ground beef and when I ordered an egg as an addition it was cooked through. Disappointing. read more

There's no salt or pepper at the table, and you actually do NOT need to ask for any. ONLY place I've ever been where a steak has been seasoned and cooked SO perfectly, that it was delicious exactly as delivered - and you can say the same for everything on the menu. The bar is also brilliantly managed. The pours are perfect - sublime - artwork. Everything is fresh, prepared perfectly, and served by a friendly, attentive staff. do NOT miss this wonderful dining experience! I'm not sure if covid-19 has anything to do with the quality of the food, however I found it to be a mediocre food for a high price. We ordered a cheeseburger and a brisket plate both left slot to be desired. Cheeseburger patty was ok, however very little sauce which made the sandwich dry, bun was almost burnt and the lettuce was soggy, fries were just ok. Brisket was a little hard so was the corn bread. Potatoes salad was good but nothing to brag about. We ordered pickup for obvious reason, we weren't given any utensils; had to go back to get some. The menu offers a solid option from the burger/poultry/seafood categories. Portions are very small though. We had: the deviled eggs, fried smelts, scallop pop boy, mushroom beef burger w local Melinda Mae cheese (which is ridiculous - we left here and went straight to the grocery store to procure a pound of the stuff!) Everything was tasty and as described by the menu/server. Not the friendliest staff but some what efficient. I find it humorous when the staff cop an elitist attitude because of the food or cocktails/craft beer/special bourbon, exspensive wine etc that their serving. Bloody Mary, steamed muscles in a sauce so delicious we dipped everything in it. I had the hot chicken sandwich, he had blue cheese mushroom burger. Amazing!! The hush puppies were soo good! Definitely a stop for us in Mystic often. The history of the building where they built boat engines in the early 1900's is great and the atmosphere is very comfortable and inviting. Cobb salad was fantastic and well worth the price! Even without chicken you get butter lettuce (who DOESN'T LOVE butter lettuce?!), thick-cut bacon, soft egg that is lightly breaded and fried on the outside with a perfect gooey yolk, and slightly pickled red onions. Also, GO to the dessert! You might as well since you're there already! The rum was just the right enough kick and the maple was yummy to split between two (it's not big, but we were already super full so it was perfect) The Extras: Great bar ambiance. We chose the Engine a room our 1st night in Mystic based on solid reviews and how conveniently located it was to The Whaler's Inn. Started with a beer at the bar while waiting for a bar table to clear. Whalers Rise was a quick hit. For dinner we had Roasted Farm Vegetables, Buffalo Dry Rub Wings and Randy's Double Stack. All were delicious. While we decided we prefer our wings with sauce over a rub, they were still very good. The bar area is cool and casual. Bartenders are attentive and friendly. Our server was nice but could have been a little more attentive and not pulled her mask down every time she spoke to us which clearly defeated the purpose. I gave my husband a gift certificate to the Engine Room and we were looking forward to going. I read the reviews and it seems most people either love it or hate it. Here's what we found. First the good... Our waitress was amazing. She was fun, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu. The music was upbeat and definitely added to our experience. We each got mixed drinks that were amazing... I got the clarified milk punch and it was delicious. Now, the not so good... We got the summer burger, fries, macaroni salad, and hush puppies. Although everything was good, only the fries had enough seasoning to made it taste really good. Everything else needed salt and pepper to be tasty. The burger, the macaroni salad, the butter for the hush puppies, and the hush puppies all needed some seasoning. There was no salt and pepper on the table and adding some after the food came out could've help. However, while I'm no gourmet chef, food definitely tastes better if you season it as it's cooked.
