We called Allendale Heating as they had just replace the primary heat exchanger on the furnace 3 years earlier. We were told that they could not get there in the morning but it would be in the afternoon around 1 before they could. That was to work well as my wife had errands to run in the AM. The technician arrived at around 10:30 when neither myself or my wife were home. My father (who is hard of hearing and cannot get around too well) let him in and he went to look at the furnace. The tech was there a short time and made the assumption that the water that was showing up was coming out of our freezer and not the furnace. What he did not know was that the freezer had just been installed the day before he arrived. He left a write up and a bill with my father. My father immediately called to tell me that the guy had come to look at the furnace already and that he didn't find anything wrong but that the freezer was leaking. I asked him to put the guy on the phone to which he replied 'He just walked out the door'. I asked him to see if he was still there. When he got back to the phone he said 'He's driving out right now' I quickly called Allendale Heating and asked the receptionist if she would have the guy call me. Her response was very short saying "Our technicians don't call people. You can read the report he left and get back to us". I explained to her that the he simply didn't know that the freezer had just been installed and if I could talk to him I would explain. I told her 'He is driving down my driveway right now... please just have him call me" She said again "Our technicians don't call people and he's on another call now" Again quite rude. I said "please he's still driving down my driveway' She just repeated the same line. "Our technicians don't call people sir" I mentioned that he arrived early and if he had been there at 1 my wife could have given him the information. She insisted that he had not. I was getting frustrated at this point when I asked if I would be paying another service charge when they didn't do anything the first time. I then said I guess I'll have to call someone else. She hung up on me. I called Coopersville Heating and Cooling. They came out and pulled the blower motor out of the furnace to expose the heat exchangers. What he found was that the secondary heat exchanger was rotted out and the moisture was gathering in the blower motor case and then blowing the water out when the blower would kick on. Why Allendale had not replaced the secondary exchanger when they did the primary I don't know. I know sometimes things don't look to bad at first glance so I guess I understand that. Two weeks passed and I thought I would call Allendale again and try to explain. That despite the misunderstanding I wanted Allendale Heating to quote a new furnace for us. I spoke with the same receptionist and was totally honest and said that I did not plan to pay the invoice for the service call when they did not asses the situation correctly. Going on I explained how Coopersville Heating and Cooling had found the problem straight away. She said to me "I don't believe any of our salesmen will want to call on you considering you just told me you were not going to pay your bill" I explained again that they arrive early and left without giving any assessment on the furnace. She said I remember this call we did not come early and hung up again. ALL OF THIS could have been avoided if the receptionist had simply done what good customer service people do and helped me / us out. Communication is the key in all relationships. Whether it be personal or professional. Why she could not assist with a simple phone call is unprofessional and shows she does not want to help people.

I got a quote within a range and like all other things, I expected the final price to be at the higher end. The technician did a great job removing the old unit and installing the new one showing that he'd obviously done this many times. I'm always concerned because these guys are on the clock and my cynical self says it doesn't matter how long it takes because it just gets reflected in the bill. I was pleasantly surprised when the bill arrived the next week. The total cost was at the lower end of the quote with an excellent job as a bonus. I've used Kentwood on and off over the years and was happy to call on them again.

I researched on the internet and it was quite clear to me that the problem was the "dip tube" The employee that came out simply tested less than 10 gallons of flow through my kitchen faucet and said that there was nothing wrong with my water heater. Never mind the fact that a water heater is designed to run 2/3 of its capacity without significant temperature drop, which would be over 30 gallons for my water heater. He did say that he needed to actually look at the water heater for his "paperwork" I continued to tell him that the first 5 minutes was not the problem. While he was looking at the water heater I ran another 5 gallons or so out of the tub sink in the same room. I asked him to test the temperature and it had dropped 15-20 degrees. He said this didn't matter and my water heater was just "old" and probably didn't work as well. I then pointed out to him that the water heater had just started after 10 minutes and probably 1/3 of the tank being run out. This is a clear symptom of the dip tube being bad since the cold water is not reaching the bottom of the tank and tripping the thermostat to turn on the heater until a significant amount of water hot water had been used. He just told me that there was probably build-up on the bottom of my tank. Of course he didn't take the 5 minutes to open the valve and run a bit into a bucket to check this. Knowing that the dip tube was the problem I ordered and replaced it myself. Sure enough the dip tube was cracked off just below the fitting and was causing all the problems. When I called the company back they refused to stand behind their work. The owner said that a dip tube is "one of those tricky things" and that "it doesn't make sense to open up the water heater to check it" he said he would have done exactly what the person that came out did and refused to stand behind their work in any way. I am not sure if these people are completely inept at what they do, trying to collect the service call fee without actually doing anything, playing some game in hopes you will buy a new water heater from them, or some combination of all three. Bottom line, never use this company!

My business partner, who is an electrical engineer/licensed master electrician, recommended Hulst as they did a good job installing his air conditioning system. (Our business is building diesel fueled heat drying systems for water damage restoration.) The Hulst people are friendly and quick to respond. Their quotation was both very fair and the lowest bid. They offer the Daikin brand furnaces which have a good reputation. We bought the high efficiency furnaces with the two stage burners and ECM motors and added wifi linked thermostats for programming and making setting adjustments using a smart phone. Rather than having a zone heating system for the two floors of our walkout home, we have two separate furnaces. Doing so enables the furnaces to be sized for the heat load of each floor instead of having a single large furnace capable of heating the entire house. The Hulst technicians installed both furnaces in a day. Their workmanship was very good and they were thorough. They explained the working of the system to us, set up the phone apps, and made a follow up visit to make sure everything was just right.
