The two star rating is solely based on the check-in process, the welcoming receptionist, them having my son in the chair within minutes of checking in, and the care of the dental hygienist. My 17 year old son was referred to this dentistry to have 2 root canals done. I overlooked 2 red flags prior to our his appointment that I wholeheartedly regret. The first red flag was after getting referred, we reached out to schedule an appointment, and we kept getting placed on hold for long periods of time, I was promised a call back twice and never received a call back. After some time, my sons teeth began to be painful so I reached out to other places and we couldn't find one that would be able to get us in soon. I tried calling this place again and they got us scheduled to come in the very next week. When my son gets in the chair, the dental hygienist does the X-Rays and they confirm what was written on the referral; which was two of his teeth needed root canals done. Dr. Backman comes in and introduces himself, he's friendly and he proceeds to look at my son's teeth. He asks which is more painful and I say to him that one isn't more painful than the other and that we would like to have them both done if possible. Dr. Backman says that he has time to do a "Root Canal Therapy" for one tooth and we would need to come back for the other. I made the mistake of assuming that a Root Canal Therapy was the same thing as a Root Canal...he just fancied up the name by throwing on Therapy. Unbeknownst to me, they started treatment, I thought they were doing a cleaning. Half way through treatment the staff member that handles the financial side of things comes and shows me the estimated cost of the treatment. I don't see an estimate for the crown. So I ask Dr. Backman about the crown and Dr. Backman said that he didn't need a crown done and most likely we were to return to our dentist that referred us to complete the crown. So I'm like oh okay...I continue looking at the breakdown of the treatment cost and notice that they maxed out the $2,000 yearly allotment from our dental insurance...I'm thinking this was for both teeth and I'm corrected and told it's only for the one tooth. I tell her that I don't want to go through with it because I won't have enough to cover the crown. Dr. Backman says he won't need a crown for awhile...he further explains that the therapy is a temporary root canal that should last about 3 years if taken care of. I'm jaw dropped. I explain to them that I don't want a temporary Root Canal done, they say that don't do crowns. At this point they started the treatment and they keep having to re numb my son because he keeps feeling the pain and getting hurt. I'm frustrated because had I known in depth what was going on then I wouldn't have proceed to get treatment with them. They should've asked me how we would like to proceed especially after I expressed that I wanted my son to have both teeth done due to the extreme pain from both. In addition, they started treatment without confirming the start of treatment. I tell the admin that I wouldn't have paid this much for a temporary root canal. I could've went to another dentistry that would've done a Root Canal for half the price with longer lasting results. I would've rather paid $2500 for 2 root canals than $2100 for a temporary root canal. She was very dismissive and said "well yeah I understand and I've never heard of a root canal with such low costs, but people come to us because we specialize in this specifically and you'd rather have it done right." She proceeded to ask me for partial payment of $220. Afterwards I got back to where my son is getting treatment and I hear the admin screaming on the phone with a patient the called and inquired about their billing. She was beyond rude and disrespectful and I said to myself "this is literally what I'm about to be dealing with." I take accountability for just assuming a root canal therapy was the same thing a a root canal. I should've asked more questions about the treatment and the costs. At the same time, I was deeply taken advantage of and I can tell this isn't new to them. Their check-in process is friendly, quick and easy for a reason...they get you in that chair fast and start treatment before bringing out the billing because they don't want anything to be looked into and declined. I will be disputing this bill. I will not pay for something that I did not agree to. You guys should've allowed me to decide what would work best for our circumstance. I wanted my son to have his dental stuff taken care of before heading to college and you guys put a dent into this. I will have to work overtime to come up with the costs to pay for not only the temporary tooth to get fixed but the other one that's still in pain. My son's pediatric dentist would've never started treatment without my understanding and confirmation. He always gave more alternatives to help choose what fit our circumstances. read more

I had an inflamed nerve in a recently crowned tooth that wasn't healing after several weeks and was keeping me up at night, so I ended up needing a root canal. Dr. Backman was patient, kind, calm, skilled, and conscientious. The procedure was painless and he explained everything he was doing before he did it. My jaw is always very sore after dental work because of the injections, but it wasn't at all this time. I needed multiple injections because I have a hard time getting numb, but he did them in a dexterous and gentle way. His dental assistant was awesome too. My review is for Dr. Charles Backman. I came to general dentist Michael Kitsis from Supertooth dentistry to get help with my #14 (this is upper left chewing tooth) that was bothering me on and off while eating. Dr Michael Kitsis and I decided on a root canal treatment followed by porcelain crown. In April I did the root canal with endodontist Dr. Charles Backman from Northgate. For about 7-10 days after root canal I've had intense pain . After the pain disappeared, Dr. Kitsis put a porcelain crown on it. Two weeks later I started feeling pain when chewing and even touching the tooth. When I called Dr. Kitsis, he said that I needed to go back to the endodontist, which I did. At the appointment, Dr. Backman checked the tooth and said that he needs to talk to my dentist Dr Kitsis on the phone. When he came back he said that dr. Kitsis had a solution for me, and that I should call him. When I ended up on the street ,I realized and could not believe that Dr. Backman did not give me any expert opinion and diagnosis for my issue and just got rid of me. I called Dr. Kitsis and he suggested to make night guard for me (??). How the night guard could possibly solve the problem? Are those doctors taking us for fools? I understand that dr. Kitsis probaly thought he haven't made enough money on my teeth, but aren't doctors supposed to provide us with help for dental issues as well? I ended up with painful tooth, exhausted insurance. Now I am planning to go for second opinion from an endodontist and a general dentist to finally find out what is happening, was the problem with the root canal or with the crown. From what I see in this situation, neither Dr. Kitsis, no Dr. Backman took responsibility for their work. It seems as if they conspired behind my back trying to hide the possible errors they made. read more

I was pretty afraid to have a root canal and waited way longer than I should have. Dr. Backman and his assistant were amazing. I had to have the root canal on a tooth with a crown, so it was a little complicated. There was virtually no pain and I was so interested in what was going on (those tiny little brushes to clean out the root! microscopes! multiple x-rays!) that the 90 minutes sped by. Dr. B. is funny and human and talked me through what was going on. The front desk staff were perfectly accurate with their insurance estimate, so there were no surprises. At the end of the procedure Dr. B said "That tooth is not going to give you any more trouble," and he was right. A few days of soreness but such a relief to not be afraid to eat hot or cold on that side! Would recommend these folks 100%. read more

Dr. Ferguson is highly skilled at his work. He has a charming personality and is patient and compassionate. He did a root canal treatment and a permanent filling of the adjacent tooth for me. the procedure was completely painless, and I even fell asleep during the procedure! Dr. Ferguson explained to me in detail the problem with my tooth using the X-rays and 3D scans that he obtained. The complex procedure of drilling through a crown and filling the root canal, followed by permanent filling was also explained and done swiftly in one sitting. His staff (receptionist, support staff) are also very warm and gentle. The office has a wonderful ambiance, and the equipment/ facility is top-class. Dr. Backman is AMAZING!! I recently was diagnosed with an abscessed tooth, which that in itself is awful!!! I was in so much pain!! Dr. Backman's staff were so reassuring and got me into their clinic promptly. They look up your dental benefits and make sure you are aware of your responsibility (which is SO helpful!). I had a unique tooth that had some dental work by a dentist (who later went to jail for unethical work!). Long story short, this dentist drilled a hole in my nerve and then put a crown on it). 12 years later that same tooth became infected, that's were Dr. Backman did a root canal on a difficult and calcified root. This is going to sound crazy, but I had SUCH a good experience getting a root canal at Endodontics Northwest! They were recommended by my regular dentist when I needed a pretty major root canal on a back molar. First of all, the procedure itself could not have gone more smoothly. I had Dr. Patel, and he was so kind and understanding. I was pretty nervous, and he made sure to listen to me, and went out of his way to ensure that I wouldn't feel any pain. After I had a bit of a freak out about getting that horrible shot of novacain in the roof of your mouth, Dr. Patel gave me an extra shot in my gums, and then waited an extra 20 minutes to test if I was numb enough so we could skip the pallet shot. On top of that, Dr. Patel and his assistant made sure to chat the whole time (the procedure takes over an hour) about every day stuff to take my mind of the fact that they were re-pouring the foundations of my smile. Everything about their bedside manor and the atmosphere of the office was designed to make this awful procedure as comfortable and easy as possible. Even the ladies at the front desk could not have been more understanding when a miscommunication with my insurance company made this procedure cost me a bit more than I expected. They worked with me to set up a payment plan, and never made me feel like my concerns were stupid or a waste of time. If all that wasn't enough to convince you, consider this: I had to get my crown (the next step after the root canal) at a different dentist because I was moving shortly after the root canal. When the new dentist looked at the x-rays of my root canal tooth he actually said "wow! THAT is a beautiful root canal!" I guess I have particularly twisty tooth roots, making my root canal especially tricky, and Dr. Patel's work was flawless. If you have to get a root canal, this is definitely the place to do it. read more

I was referred to Endodontics Northwest for a root canal after a consultation with my dentist. The receptionist was very kind and was able to schedule a same-day appointment for me after hearing that this tooth was causing me a lot of pain. I have severe dental anxiety, and was terrified of going to a new office, but everyone at Endodontics NW was very understanding of my anxiety and did everything they could to help me through the procedure. Dr. Backman and his assistant, Kathleen, were professional and courteous. Kathleen did everything she could to make sure I was comfortable throughout the procedure, even as I was close to having a panic attack about getting the novocaine shot. Dr. Backman talked me through everything he was doing, letting me know when to anticipate a loud noise or pressure. He numbed me so thoroughly I couldn't feel a thing, and I was provided laughing gas to help alleviate some of my anxiety throughout the process. Unfortunately, the tooth he was working on was too decayed to complete the root canal. Once Dr. Backman saw how bad my tooth was, he took the time during the middle of the procedure to call my dentist and have a conversation with her about what to do next. Everything was explained clearly to me, and he managed to remove most of the remaining decay and place a temporary filling on the tooth so that I could go home pain-free that day. Dr. Backman and Kathleen went above and beyond to help me feel comfortable throughout a not-so-fun procedure, and helped ease some of my anxieties about going to the dentist in the future. **Minor caveat, I am on pain pills, but had already decided to write a review about Dr. Patel and Endodontics Northwest before I ever left the office. I may have to come back and edit this later for clarity. I never expected that I would be writing a review of a great experience with a root canal, but here I am! My dentist had been watching a cracked tooth for a year or so, and after my last cleaning, he recommended that I visit Endodontics Northwest for a consultation (side note: my regular dentist, Dr. Gary Jacky in Edmonds is amazing, too). I went in for a quick visit and after testing the tooth, Dr. Patel recommended a root canal and sent me to the receptionist for scheduling. I scheduled my appointment for the following week (today) and off I went. Once I got home, I started getting nervous about the procedure. I broke the cardinal rule and went online to find out what exactly a root canal is, what to expect, how much the pain level is, and so forth- horror story after horror story. Everyone I told about the procedure immediately expressed alarm and expressed sympathy. Only a few people told me to stop being such a damn drama queen. I finally got myself so worked about with anxiety, I called the office to let them know I was freaking out. The receptionist I spoke with was super soothing, clearly explained the whole process to me, and made sure I felt secure before hanging up. She even offered to go get Dr. Patel on the phone in case I had additional questions. I felt so much better. But last night I didn't sleep. I was getting myself all worked up again with anxiety. I just kept thinking about the Ren and Stimpy episode where the Nerve Ending Fairy appears (http://renandstimpy.wikia.com/wiki/Ren%27s_Toothache). By the time of my appointment, I was in the office parking lot near tears when the ambulance and fire truck showed up. I slowly wandered in to the office to see it packed with paramedics, attending to another patient. A 96 year old woman was having chest pains, and I was concerned about her well being, but it didn't help my anxiety, any. Yeah, yeah, I know. This is getting long. So, bear with me. I got in to the chair and Dr. Patel sat and patiently explained the whole procedure. He numbed my jaw, and then sat and talked through the whole process, the history of the products they would be using, and the length of time the process would take. I have super healthy teeth. I have had a couple of cavities related to a period of time in my 20's when I didn't have dental insurance for almost 5 years, but other than that, I've never had major dental work. This was easier than I ever imagined. The whole process took about 40 minutes. Dr. Patel and his assistant worked seamlessly together and they each explained the instruments and what they were doing at each step of the process. Have had extensive dental work in life, have dental professionals in family, and a DDS as a friend. Also went expanded practices -super intensive schooling, and yes, finished it. So am up close and personal with dental work, and workers. Due to accidents and more have had 6 root canals-- one was done by a dentist I was engaged to. But the most professional, and pleasant [yes! pleasant] root canal was done by Dr. Jinten Patel and assistant Lindsey. WOW! I'm sooooo impressed. Unlike the person who left a single star because he was expected to actually pay for the work done, I was given the exact cost when I went in right down to the last $0.20--by the receptionist, Kris. It is pretty amazing to feel good about a root canal, but, if you have to have one, Endodontics NW is a great place to go! I've had other procedures with them and feel pretty confident (although dental work ususally makes me break out in hives and I, occasionally, get lightheaded). The front office is always very accomodating, Dr. Colic's assistant was reassuring and my experience was a good one. I love when I'm being told what's next..including where they're at in the procedure, what I'm going to feel (or not!) and when done, what the inside of the tooth looks like (their equipment is very state-of-the-art). I do not give perfect scores very often. BUT, get yee to Dr. Backman if you need a root canal. First, he's just a cool human and his assistance works with him like two peas in a pod, just smooth! I've had EXTENSIVE dental work over the years. I am on my 8th? root canal. I'd drive from the edge of the planet to come here, because this is not something you want to have done by anyone but the very highest skilled and experienced doctor. I've had 4 root canals here. Let that speak on its own merits. Seattle is loaded with all kinds of specialist dentists. Don't waste your time, this is where you want to be! (And there is plenty of provided parking). On my 3rd root canal, I developed an infection that ended up in very very severe pain. I was scared. This is not uncommon in someone my age and with my issues. The key is getting on it right away! I was seen literally that day, within hours of my calling and started on appropriate pain meds and antibiotics and my root canal was saved!! I am a SUPER coward despite all the drama my poor face has endured. I was driving before seat belts were mandatory you know. I am fairly high anxiety, maybe paranoid even. BUT, if you explain to the doctor what your needs or issues are, they work with you in every way. No one wants to have a root canal right? At least make it the best experience all around that it can be, with, great results!! My costs were clearly laid out, including insurance payments and I was made aware of the costs up front. I think the number one issue for me is comfort and quality. Who wants to be in grinding pain? Get it done where you are treated like a human. Thanks Dr. Backman and staff! read more

Early this year I needed a root canal and was referred to a Dr. Charles Backman Endodontics Northwest, 9714 3rd Ave NE, Suite 203, Seattle. Dr. Backman started a root canal procedure, but wasn't able to complete it because he broke a finger. Yet because of the time he spent with me I was charged $465. He also required I get a 3D Exray of the tooth at an imaging clinic that accepted $125 CASH ONLY. In the Seattle area any dental procedure is very expensive because of lots of persons are moving here. If you need a procedure and have the time it's best to seek a doctor outside the area because it's usually cheaper. Subsequently I chose Burlington Dental on Fairhaven in Burlington WA and found that their root canals were two-thirds cheaper. read more

I was billed $120 for a "consultation" visit. I expected I was going in for scheduling only and with a "prefered" endodontist and did not expect to pay $120. But once I was there everything changed. I went to Dr. Colic's office to "schedule a root canal appointment". When I arrived they had me sit in the dentists chair for an exam. I am inclined to be cooperative so I did and they proceeded to take x-rays. I assumed they were trying to get an idea of how much time to budget but I should have asked for an explaination. I intended to schedule an appointment for the root canal when I returned home but discovered that my insurance pays 10% less for this endodontist's work (he is not "prefered") so I decided to have the job done elsewhere. The next month I got a bill for an exam and x-rays. When I complained that they didn't tell me what they were doing, misled me about the insurance and duplicated work that my dentist had already done, they said I had to pay regardless. Dr. Colic may be a good endodontist but watch the office staff carefully and don't take anybody's word for anything. Check with your insurance company and get as much as possible in writing. read more
