It had been a long time since I had been here (6+ years) and I remember just kind of liking this place... but I was actually really impressed yesterday when I came in for lunch. It was a Sunday so the price is more then usual for lunch, but I think it's because they have crab legs all day Sunday's. Anyways... they had an awesome selection! I was craving shrimp and they had like 5 different shrimp dishes! They also had a really impressive sushi selection. All the food was great besides a few things I picked up. And weirdly enough, the ice cream is SUPER good! I don't know what mix they use (it's out of a soft serve machine) but it's super creamy and just the right sweetness. This is the worst service I have ever experienced in my life. We went there and had crab that was cold and smelt like cat piss. We told the lady that half her food was cold and she argued stating that crab is supposed to taste like that. And that she was mad we wouldn't eat it. She refused to comp any part of the ticket and said that we wasted her expensive food. Their friend food was also cold. The worst $8.99 I've spent in some time. I will service our service was totally fine and all the employees were interacted with were kind and helpful. On to the food. It was OLD. The moment we walked in we knew we had made a a tragic mistake. I noticed an odd smell upon entering the restaurant. We sat down and gave it a chance. This is a basic Chinese buffet. Neither awesome nor awful. I eat here when I want more variety on my plate than I can afford at a regular Chinese restaurant. The lunch price here is pretty good, and they have a discounted price on Tuesdays (I've never been here for dinner). To me, the best two things on the buffet are the cream cheese wontons and the stir fried bok choi. Surprisingly, their fried fish fillets are quite good, and the apple pie pastry (on a hot table, not with the desserts) is one of the best desserts I've had at a buffet. Their stir fried rice tends to be a bit undercooked crunchy, almost all the chicken dishes feature the same deep fried nuggets, & the waitstaff tend to be pretty indifferent. went to eat at Empire and took a bite of a pot sticker and someone's tooth was in it. We talked to the manager lady named Ying and she said she would handle it. She wanted to just take off his meal and make us pay half price for mine. We talked about it being crazy to pay when we found someone else's tooth in our food. She ended up not charging us but saying they would handle this issue. just flakes it off like nothing happened. They didn't go throw away or take out any of the other pot stickers. We can with 12 people to celebrate our friend birthday. He love crab legs. So we decide to come here. They bought out the crab legs twice for all of us and plus the rest of the people in the restaurant. We asked when they bring out some more. The lady said okay in few minutes. We waited for 30 minutes. She came back and told us they are out. If u are going to serve all u can eat buffet that include the crab legs. U must have all the food ready to serve. The shrimps taste very bad and sandy. I ate many buffet in my lifetime. I was very embarrassed to take my 12 friends here. This is my last time, I'll come here. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant at all. The owner is selfish and stingies with crab legs. The health department should inspect the restaurant. When is the last time you went to a Chinese buffet and it looked like a posh Las Vegas 5 star restaurant? Never! And this is no exception. There is a bunch of tasteless decorations, holes in the chairs, and the chef eating in the corner. But why do we go to Chinese buffets? To eat till we drop, not the service or ambiance. There is a great sushi selection and unlimited snow crab legs. These two items make up for the $11.99 price tag instantly. They of course have a lot of the normal Chinese and American fare. Each time I have eaten here the last four times, I (or my wife) have said, "This is it. No more". At least six years ago when China Sun on Gateway was taking a nose dive, we switched to Empire. But now it's taken a dive in quality. The food is -more often than not- cold. My wife was out of town so I let my kids talk me into taking them to Empire last night. Food wasn't AS cold as it has been, but the sushi was plain awful. The salmon was more brown than pink...the California rolls were too crunchy and didn't taste right. So bad that I gave all but the one I ate to my less picky son. Even my kids agreed this is probably the last time we eat here. Know of any other good Chinese buffets? Horrible service to begin with. Language barrier was not only a problem but the lack of common sense and actual ability to call itself a buffet was outrageous. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE!! If you like being hovered over by the enchanting yet creepy eyes of workers spying on you to make sure you didn't eat anything on the dinner menu even though it was lunch time than go here. The Empire I think is instantly well liked if you've had legit Chinese food before, in all its greasy and deep-fried goodness hahaha. They have a nice seafood collection of shellfish, some deep fried in batter, others baked, or sauteed in sauces. The dessert counter tends to be ignored with reason, it doesn't look too appetizing. Not that it looks gross, it just looks boring and bland (sans the frosty machine) Although the sugared donuts in the regular counter area are pretty damn tasty! Sushi isn't the best, I don't recommend it. But the other entree options, soups, seafood, poultry, and stir fry are good. The service is very limited, usually only a waiter or two at attention. But I suppose since it's a buffet one should be able to handle their meal on their own. Yet when you want a drink at the bar or some non-alcoholic beverage, it's faster if you just get up and grab a waiter yourself than wait. The atmosphere is very busy and happy with families enjoying a good meal together, which makes your dining experience all the better. Overall, if you were looking for a good Chinese restaurant in eugene, I'd definitely have this on the list. read more

No. The food is awful. I tried a wide variety of the offerings - and they do have a vast array of choices - when I went to lunch here and nothing was worth eating. The coconut chicken tasted like bad mayonnaise. The only thing that I found to me mildly edible was the mushrooms from the chicken with mushrooms. Everything else was really disgusting - loaded with goopy, flavorless sauce and piled with indiscriminate "meat". I'm trying to think of something nice to say about this restaurant. Went here with the niece today and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The selection was very good they had many different types of fried food and all the American Chinese type fair such as egg foo young, general tso's chicken, lo mein, mushroom chicken, peanut chicken, cheese won tons, spring rolls, egg rolls and a fresh sushi station where the person will make made to order sushi. The staff was very nice and even though it is a help your self buffet she kept coming back to ask if we needed refills or anything else. It was very clean and there was fresh fruit, a salad bar and dessert bar. I love, love, love when you try out a new place and everything turns out just right. Our bill came to $21.95 for the 2 buffets and Pepsi for lunch. Great day today! Good company and great food. You should give this place a go. read more

It's hard to rate a chinese buffet because of a few different factors: Day that you go, time of day that you go, what they decide to put out. The food was decent, but no where near the best I've had. I actually was going to give this place 2 stars, but then I thought about the Chicken in Peanut sauce that I had which I really enjoyed quite a bit. Though it's not my favorite buffet that I've been to, it has it's bright spots. They have many of my favorite appetizers and entrees, made well enough. Service is generally pretty good. I would recommend going during lunch time (even though there is a pretty solid rush) to ensure all the food (most importantly the sushi) is fresh. Which brings me to the less desirable aspects. The vast majority of their sushi is California Roll inspired, meaning it contains avocado, which I am allergic to; leaving me very few options. Total let down, as a sushi lover. Also, if you're going to save room for dessert, many items are worth eating, but don't expect a nice cone on your way out, as they have recently down-graded their cones to thimble size. I'd say, if you're in the neighborhood, it's a worthwhile place to try at least once to see if you'd like it yourself. If you're picky about your buffet there are better places to go in the Eugene-Springfield area. read more

Horrible horrible horrible. I am actually disgusted. We were charged a 10% gratuity and we never saw our waiter. We saw 2 little girls sticking their fingers into the deserts and we brought it to the attention of an employee the desserts were never replaced. When we were paying our bill I brought it to the attention of the cashier and told her we do not feel as if a 10% gratuity was deserved when we got no service. We furthermore explained how the girls were touching the deserts and they never got replaced. They should be ashamed of themselves. At this point the cashier started yelling and screaming at me. I have been coming here for about 12 years. I have always felt very welcome and the food has been consistently good. One time I had an issue with the food and brought it to the staffs attention and the promptly took care of it. It had to do with the Salmon. They took my plate and took the food off the counter and threw it away and brought out fresh salmon. I have brought many different people with me, and everyone has been happy. Their food tastes good but they mislabel it. For allergy sufferers this is a huge problem. I had an allergy reaction because of it and called it to their attention, my airways were constricted and my lips burning, sick to my stomach...they just said that'll be $8.99. They didn't change their labeling, didn't apologize, didn't even remove my charge. Five days later I am still suffering, but not them. They don't understand for some people this is life and death! I would give this place zero stars if that was an option. None of the food was the right temperature. 'Hot' items were lukewarm and the sushi wasn't on ice. Most of the items had been there for hours and had congealed sauces. I spit out the one bite of spring roll and 'stuff mushroom.' Yes, it was labeled that way. It may have been accurate because I don't know what the stuff was that I spit out, but it was horrible. The female who sat us was very unfriendly and we were offered drink refills when we were about to leave. Granted.. we didn't stay long. Not only was the food soggy and bland but the service was even worse! My guy went here to meet up with his friend who loved to rave about how amazing the food was and how awesome the staff was, the second we walk in and get our seats we were treated extremely rudely by the staff who after served us our first round of drinks decided that they were not going to do anything else for us and proceeded to go onto their phones and play or text rather than serve their customers. When we went through the buffet the chicken was extremely dry and since they offered the basics of sushi I thought I would try some however when I grabbed one I noticed that it looked like it was sweating, which is never appetizing at least in my opinion. I really liked this place. I've read the other reviews and I think ppls expectations are inordinately unreasonable. It is a buffet. For dinner at 12.99 in Eugene, for half way decent food, is remarkable. When I went there the staff was polite. The food was fresh and refreshed often. It tasted as good as any other Chinese food in Eugene that I've eaten and it had all the buffet staples that make you smile. Lunch is even cheaper. I moved from southern Spain to Eugene at the end of 2006, and my rediscovery of chinese buffet restaurants was like a sunray in the NW gray skies!! Since moving to Eugene I tried quite a few of the chinese restaurants - heck, you can't go wrong with chinese food: tasty, healthy, cooked just for you, and cheap!!! I found Empire quite by accident and soon after, it became a regular meeting & eating place for me and friends. During the day they have a bit of everything to suit everyone's taste, and being in Eugene, appealing also to vegans and vegetarians alike! Come evening, the great menu includes the welcome addition of salmon, king crab legs and clams/mussels!! I fell in love with this place!! There's a great selection of all types of dishes: seafood, meats (chicken, beef), veggies, and I cannot forget my favorite item there: their string beans... Upon entering, you're taken to a table and your drinks are requested (not included in the meal price), then go to the buffet area to pick up a dish and get your food from the ample selection... I would also eat a few of the finger-food while gathering up my food. There's even a good selection of desserts!! If you go there, the small pictures of the interior were taken and given to them by yours truly!!! On your birthday, your meal is free (ID-proof required); how cool is that? I've seen everyone from students to whole families of all colors and sizes eat here... Since moving from Eugene, I' ve been back twice on my short trips. Wish there were such a place in SF!!! So, I took my 15 going on 16 year old grandson to Empire Buffet for lunch. It was his birthday. Their web site says your birthday meal is free. When it came time to pay the bill, they would NOT let him have the free meal. Their web site says, Bring ID.He had his student ID from a local high school, says he's a freshman, etc. However because there's no date on the ID his birthdate, they said no. Okay,so what kind of ID should a teenager take there to prove it's his birthday? Guess they thought we were lying. I don't know about anyone else but I do NOT carry a copy of my or his birth certificate around with me! Thanks for ruining his day! read more

Let me start off by saying if you've been to a Chinese buffet you know how the service is. No complaints there. Another thing worth noting is you eat free on your birthday, also worth noting is that that's one of the three stars. The selection here is pretty good. Lots of dishes, some pretty interesting. I didn't try the sushi as I was told it was terrible. I didn't try a lot of things honestly, the food was pretty damn bad. If you're down for greasy food be my guest, I just can't do greasy. I felt sick after about 10 minutes in this place. I might be overrating this place, but my friend and I had a pretty good laugh making fun of the food and odd clientele. The place isn't very clean, the standards aren't very high. However the place is pretty relaxed, has pretty good variety and price.
