Niko is so cool! My friends and I came here after a drag show and somehow had just as much entertainment as the drag show! Niko was so cool and funny and tolerated our ridiculousness. He gave us great recommendations from the menu and had a really good energy about him. We started with some guacamole and it was pretty tasty. But the fish tacos? They were some of the best fish tacos I've ever had. Maybe it's because they were thick pieces - not tiny cut up fish bits - and they were fresh and hot and crispy! The sauce on them was so good and packed a nice punch and the lime delivered a perfect amount of acid. These were stellar and I would come back for these any day. I thought the meal wouldn't get better, but then we all shared a Cuban sandwich and wow! It was better than some of the ones I've had in Miami. I was totally floored after this meal! We weren't expecting anything big, but this was bombastic, and I will definitely be recommending this place to everyone I know! My rating is solely on the empanadas and the customer service we received. We needed a mid afternoon snack before dinner and an empanada was the perfect option. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in and saw how cute the restaurant was. I had passed by many times but for some reason I thought it was a more casual take out place but I was very wrong. They renovated in 2023 and they did an amazing job, the bar, color and table settings were all so aesthetically pleasing. The waitress that was there was so nice and attentive and even offered us water while we waited for our empanadas. We opted to try the corn chicken empanadas which comes with chicken, potatoes and saffron inside. They were delicious and exactly what we needed to hold us over until our late dinner plans. Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. We need more quality eats in south slope-almost-Greenwood, please! The music is a touch too loud, but kids and their rock 'n roll, right? Doesn't take away from the delectable food and considerate service, especially Lucas and Orsi (at the bar) - they know what they're doing! The proprietor, George, is always on site - he is very involved and works hard. You can tell. For many New Yorkers the pandemic lasted but a few years; for bars, restaurants and cafes like George's .. COVID-19's effects still linger and make for a challenging time. Kudos to George for hanging in there, and much appreciation! Will be back next weekend for my virgin bellini (better tasting than the "real" thing) and delicious respite from this cruel, hard world. Coming back here to remind everyone this is where I received the rudest and most terrible treatment I have ever gotten from a restaurant in the entire neighborhood after years of living here. Got two empanadas in a brown bag and walked out, saw an empty table and chair by their window and decided to have a seat and enjoy my empanada in the nice weather, until my Wednesday afternoon was ruined by one of the waiters asking me to either pay for dine in or essentially leave. The message: you are not allowed to consume the food we sold you on our premises. Mind you restaurant was empty (and has remained empty even after they poured so much money in to the re-model) and I am sure with that nasty attitude of theirs it will remain empty. Note to the business owner: please don't bother responding to this review with paragraphs of words that go nowhere, it's embarrassing. The least you can say is sorry. I was greeted by the owner, George, who was super nice and was served by the manager Nico and the bartender Jenn, and they were great! I did want to love this place but somewhere between the facelift of high end Mexican restaurant status, the place lost its roots. The gold foil is such a disconnect from the neighborhood and its families. Extremely large chunks of avocado (like 1/4th of one) instead of guacamole. Dry, well done, almost shredded steak instead of thick medium rare slices. No beans and barely any pico. I have been ordering from this restaurant for years now. They were recently under renovations. I wanted to come and dine in and see how the renovations turned out. Came in on a Monday evening. We were immediately greeted by friendly staff. I was taken aback by how beautiful the restaurant renovations came out. As soon as you walk in, there is a neon sign that says Tequila made me do it. Great photo prop. The restaurant looks airy and more spacious. I loved all the beautiful decor, including the beautiful spacious bar. Niko and Allen were super friendly and attentive. They explained the menu to us and answered any questions we might have had. For drinks, we ordered a Corona and a cocktail called infused. I was unsure how I would like the infused cocktail, so Niko had the bartender make me a little sample for me to try first. It was delicious. The tajin gives it a nice kick. Our bartender was super nice and sweet. Niko brought us complimentary plantain chips dipped in a salsa, which was delicious. We ordered nachos with ground beef. The portions on these nachos were massive, super flavorful, and filling. Of course, we ordered the delicious empanadas. We ordered beef, cheese, and cheeseburger. I love how each empanada is paired off with a sauce. My favorite is the salsa verde sauce. We got to meet the amazing chef. The chef, along with Niko, brought out Gambas Al Ajillo, which is shrimp in a lemon butter garlic sauce with sweet plantain puree for us to try. The shrimp was cooked to perfection. This was a delicious meal. For dessert, the chef brought out the Guava Heaven Empanada with a side of vanilla ice cream in a chocolate cover cup. OMG, I now understand why they call this dessert Guava Heaven. It is absolutely delicious. The taste of the guava and cheese is so yummy. If you're looking for great quality, delicious food, then this is your to go to spot. Can't wait to come back and try the Cuban sandwich and some other foods on the menu. A friend told me about this place and I just had to try it with her. I don't get empanada often but I do love eating them when I find them. They have so many options for empanadas that it will make you go loco!! (Or loca!) we got like half the menu when we ordered, 2 of almost everything. The cheese one is really good and I think my favorite. (A bit inconsistent though because one time we got a little cheese and another time we got a lot.) The beer, pork and chicken are all good - but even better with the sauces that come with the empanadas. The mamacita crabmeat one is really just imitation crabmeat (fish cake basically) so just be forewarned before you order that one. My daughter and I love empanadas so when we came across this place on Seamless we decided to give it a try. The BEST empanada for me was the "Medellin empanada". It's roast pork and mozzarella cheese. Amazingly delicious in my opinion. My daughter really enjoyed the "Chicken empanada" The beef was good too just a little dry. So gonna go against the grain and review an empanada eatery over its churros. Came into this festivitus restaurantus looking for a dessert and settled on the churros with dipping chocolate. Our server could not be sweeter and our churros came out pretty quickly. These things were bomb. Crispy yet soft in the middle. Plenty of cinnamon sugar to keep it sweet. And the chocolate ganache was wonderfully creamy and rich. A perfect compliment. Really short review, I know. Omg I go crazy for the mamacita empanada. Would definitely recommend consuming within 10 minutes of purchasing - wow. Ordered for delivery ($15 min, no fee) over the weekend and wasn't thrilled with the food. I had a burrito bowl ($10.95) with shredded pork, my boyfriend had a steak quesadilla ($10) and I also had to try one of the empanadas (had the reuben) since you can't NOT order whatever the restaurant is named after ($3). The delivery options are fairly limited in Carroll Gardens so I always like to try new places and cross my fingers that I'll add another spot to my rotation...and unfortunately, it's a no from me dawg. The price is certainly right for what it is - average size portions of crappy Mexican food. However, it's no cheaper than Chipotle, and let's be honest here...Chipotle is pretty darn good for what it is. The burrito bowl, which came with guac, cheese, rice, beans, etc. was pretty flavorless with the exception of the shredded pork, which was a big greasy and gnarly mess. The quesadilla was pretty average and my boyfriend didn't end up finishing it. The empanada (granted probably my mistake for getting reuben, of all flavors) was gross too and tasted absolutely nothing like a reuben despite seemingly having all the ingredients inside. I will say there are, like, 50 choices of empanadas, so odds are at least one of them is good. Delivery came fairly quickly and was packaged nicely, so credit where credit is due. Unfortunately though, strictly judging by taste this place is getting quickly crossed off the list. Also concerning was the fact that the sour cream tasted, well, sour; the fact that I felt sick immediately after consuming it wasn't a great sign either.
