It was obviously an inside job which was corroborated by the Mill Creek police department who told me the place was infamous for robbery. Smartstop would take no accountability. But now, to add insult to injury, having already been charged for the full month they are refusing to refund me for the 25 unused days because I cleared out my unit a few days past their so-called 2-day pro-rate policy. This is a company full of unfair business practices, they do not value their customers, your items are not safe and they will never do the right thing.

Which does mean you have to follow the rules, but what you get is the peace of mind that your unit is safe from theft or damage. Accessing the unit is easy, the bay is huge, the elevators are large, and I've never had to wait on someone else to access my unit. They have a bunch of dollies on site and their shop is very fairly priced if you need a lock, boxes or packing material. The building is gated making it even more secure. I highly recommend this place especially if your items are valuable or would benefit from temperate control.

Once a locally owned and managed facility it has been bought by a corporate storage company that owns hundreds of locations in the states and Canada. Contrary to what you would think having been a long term client, the longer you stay the more you will pay vs a new tenant. What is most frustrating dealing w/ a corporation vs a locally owned storage property. Corporations site managers inability make cost adjustments to your rent vs local most do. In my situation if I were a new tenant I could get a 10x12 unit reserved online for $124/month. My current unit is a 10x10 and I pay close to $220/month. I was totally unaware of how much more I was paying vs a new tenant who could get a unit for $100 less a month in a larger unit. When I shopped around at other storage locations locally owned of equal quality and compared costs the savings of moving is compelling esp since almost all provide a free moving truck. Plus you might be able to downsize as you go through the process. My suggestion is to shop around and stay with a locally owned storage facility.

The staff has always been friendly and always helpful. The the unit was secure, low priced and the facility clean. All the years we stored there, and we had two units, there were never any issues. They even offered us cold bottled water when we were sorting our stuff on a hot summer day. We loved that the staff were responsive and security minded. It makes a big difference compared to a few places we tried before. We will tell our friends and when we need storage again, we will return. Thank you for a pleasant experience.

So, rather than giving these greedy bastards $17K (assuming there would be no more price increases ), I have everything away to charity. I should've found a storage company with better policies for price increases. They really have you over a barrel once your move so much stuff in there. This was a huge and very costly mistake for me. My advice? Go somewhere else Reply to business: I understood that there would be rate increases. But 35% in the first year? Really? And your reasoning that you need to keep the place clean? The bathroom was disgusting. The one that was actually open anyway and at one point there were absolutely no carts to use. It wasn't because they were being used by other people because I was the only car in the parking lot. There was no light in my unit that was 30 ft deep. And all this, for $518 a month. Oh, did I mention the rat crap in my unit? Is this the cleanliness that you speak of? Fortunately, the rats chewed into the boxes, but did not destroy any of the contents. This is why I HATE storage units. Finally CubeSmart....They opened and to my surprise they had amazing rates. The guy that sign me up said they do not pull the "bait and switch" other storage units pull. I couldn't believe my ears. After using them for a few years with minimal rate increases each year, I thought "WOW! I finally found an honest storage unit facility that I can stick with for the long run......nope. Today I received a "Notice of Rate Change" and they are raising my rates by nearly DOUBLE!!!! You saw that correctly...DOUBLE. How is that kind of increase even legal? Oh and just to add insult to injury they sent the notice to me on Aug 5th that was effective Aug 1st! REPLY TO OWNER COMMENT: Thanks for giving me another example of why you deserve 1 star.
