Go to ANDY! Knew I wanted to get the ugly keloid scar on my arm covered with a tattoo of my family coat of arms, but was so scared because I read that tattooing over scars can be risky. Andy had inked a little Scotty dog on my wrist before, so I asked him how he would feel about it. Super glad that he agreed and was even enthusiastic about helping me out. I gave him a VERY rough sketch of the image and a description of the components. He put together a drawing that was way better than what I had envisioned. It's a beautiful depiction of something meaningful to me and he clearly took the time to make it perfect. He gave me some options - to have it done in color or to make it more traditional with a banner, but didn't pressure me with any. Andy is such a pleasure to be around, in addition to being a really talented artist. So, the whole experience was great. He is professional, personable, and clearly cares about customer satisfaction. I promised my daughter that when she turned 18, I'd pay for her first tattoo. At the last minute I decided to get my first tattoo as well. We got matching Harry Potter tattoos (daughter on shoulder and me on the inside of my wrist) from Andy. He was quick and did a great job with the design. Ego did my first tattoo four years ago. As of today, the color is still great, the shading hasn't bled or lost pigmentation, and the placement still makes me happy. Additionally, when I came in for my obligatory touch-up he asked if he could add a couple of things to the tattoo - he wasn't happy with it. When he showed me what he meant, I saw why, and he proceeded to make those additions for no charge. I like that he's willing to offer his opinion on the work, but was chill enough that I didn't feel like I had to say yes. read more

They aren't the most expensive place in the city ($100/hr with a $50 minimum) but the work they do is worth so much more. I've driven past this small, easy to miss shop hundreds of times. Finally the boy and I decided to check 'em out so we wandered down on a Saturday afternoon to see what was what. After walking in, I was unsure of the place, because I'm used to larger shops (Apocalypse, Laughing Buddha, etc.). But the owner Tony immediately made me feel more comfortable. As luck would have it, Tony had a cancellation that afternoon, so I was able to get a tattoo right then - which was pretty kick-ass. He did good work, didn't take too long, and charged me a reasonable rate. I'd definitely go back again if I wanted some work done within a sooner time frame than a larger shop. My wife and I decided to get tattoo's to celebrate our wedding. We went in and talked with Alex and had him sketch up some designs for us. We came back a few days later and loved what he came up with. He did a amazing job with the lettering and style on the design and tattoo. I didn't get my tattoo done here but my boyfriend did. I was with him throughout most of the process and this place does great work. My b/f had work done here prior and wanted to add more to his previous tattoo. Turtle got an idea of what we wanted and drew our design. He was very patience with us as we asked for several changes to be made to his drawing. He also provided ideas as to what he thinks would look nice and what wouldn't. He is super nice! He also took his time and made sure he had the art pasted correctly and evenly on my b/f's back (which is very important).... a permanent, crooked tattoo is NOT cool. =) The tattoo looked amazing when it was finished! Exactly what he and I wanted!! Unfortunately, Turtle will be moving to New York soon (forgot when he said he would). New York will be lucky to have him. Will not go anywhere else. Out of 8 tattoos, 6 of them are from Emerald City and I love them all. The owner Tony is amazing, spends time with you so you get exactly what you want. They've had a lot of great artists in that shop and I wouldn't expect anything less then from these guys, they are all full of talent. I recommend this place to all of my friends. The only negative experience I had there was when one of the guys told me he would draw up something for my boyfriend, I paid him and he sent me over a rough draft. I told him what we liked and what we didn't. He might have taken offense to out suggestions or changes and never got back to me. But aside from that one experience this place is 5/5 stars. read more

I called in the afternoon of with some friends to get small tattoos. We got an appointment with Dan O. who could do ours back to back. It was my first tattoo so I was pretty nervous. We actually walked in to a shop earlier that day on Roosevelt in U District to get a consultation, but didn't like the vibe of the artist so we left and looked for a different place to go. I'm glad we called Emerald City! Everyone was comfortable and Dan O. had a calm vibe. He was really patient when I asked him to re-sketch a million times. I appreciated the zero rush and how understanding he was because it was my first tattoo and his style of typography was more elaborate than I wanted. So it took a while to figure out exactly what I wanted. I got a quote on my rib cage and a small tree on my wrist. Yeah, it hurt way more than I expected. He let my friends sit with me so I had a hand to hold on to and they talked me through the whole thing. The layout of the shop is interesting. When you walk in there's a gate that separates the two side counters from the rest of the floor. Instead of separated stations, they have a fold-able table they set up when people are getting tattooed. I think at maximum they could have two people getting tattoos done at the same time. Everything was clean and you could see him pulling out new equipment every time. No aftercare kit, but I had small tattoos so it didn't require much maintenance afterward. I only experienced peeling and dryness on my wrist tattoo. I imagine it was mostly because I wear gloves at work. I still put a little bag balm on it at night. Overall, great experience and we all left really happy after being there for three hours. They take cards, but charge a little extra so bring cash if possible! read more

These guys are great. The staff is non-threatening, very supportive, and will tell you if you have a stupid idea. Want custom work? Perfect! They love that. Want to get something cheesy that everyone and their dog has... well, they'll tell you you're dumb, but probably do it anyway. My favorite artist is Ego. He's been working on a back piece of mine for several years a now, and he's always been cool with me. He drew the whole thing out by hand, I think we had 3 or 4 meetings before he even put a needle to me. Very very diligent about his craft. Careful with scheduling, though, Ego's the best, but has a few other businesses he runs and is hard to pin down. I recommend him for all those interested in shade heavy, perspective heavy, or any piece involving feathers. I would give them 4.5 if I could because their 'waiting area' for friends or those without appointments blows ass (no chairs and very tight). read more

Yeah, so the only review I've written on Yelp was to promote this gym I used to work for that was the pits. Sorry for that guys. This review, however, is genuine. Ego just did my first tattoo yesterday in memorium of my father. The man spent 2.5 hours designing and needling my skin all the while giving helpful advice that ended with a product of exceptional quality. I've never wanted a tattoo, but with the sudden loss of my father I felt the need to let him paint a permanent crow on my right shoulder. Shading, details, coloring are all top-notch. And he didn't even tease me for being such a pussy about the whole deal (maybe it was that vegan dessert I brought him to lighten the mood---*hint hint*). I've been told the mark of a great tattoo is the ease of the healing process. Over 24 hours later my skin feels slightly irritated, but more comfortable than I would have imagined. I thank Ego for his dedication to my project and his unbelievable skills & talent. Ego, thank you, I hope that this review influences others to make appointments with you although I'm sure you'd rather paint some fucked up waify half-dead creatures.
