Had a preplanned tattoo design and appointment at another studio, only to walk in and the artist said they couldn't get me in that day after all. I was so disappointed but decided to call Emerald City which was nearby. And I'm so glad I did! Not only did Jeremy get me in quickly same day, he was sweet, friendly, had great tunes and did a fantastic job! My design was a mashup of two designs with tweaks. He listened to what I wanted and gave me my favorite tattoo to date! I'm in love, and will definitely be back! read more

I was looking for an artist with an opinion. I had a few ideas of a tattoo I wanted and needed help focusing. Ashley was up for the challenge and created a tattoo that I was excited to get done. I wanted to get the tattoo on my wrist and people had told me it would be very painful. Ashley had a light touch and yes, it's a tattoo, it's going to hurt but it wasn't crazy painful. The shop was clean and the other artists were friendly. I'm already looking forward to getting my next tattoo done with Ashley at Emerald City Tattoo. read more

Go to ANDY! Knew I wanted to get the ugly keloid scar on my arm covered with a tattoo of my family coat of arms, but was so scared because I read that tattooing over scars can be risky. Andy had inked a little Scotty dog on my wrist before, so I asked him how he would feel about it. Super glad that he agreed and was even enthusiastic about helping me out. I gave him a VERY rough sketch of the image and a description of the components. He put together a drawing that was way better than what I had envisioned. It's a beautiful depiction of something meaningful to me and he clearly took the time to make it perfect. He gave me some options - to have it done in color or to make it more traditional with a banner, but didn't pressure me with any. Andy is such a pleasure to be around, in addition to being a really talented artist. So, the whole experience was great. He is professional, personable, and clearly cares about customer satisfaction. I couldn't be happier with the end result. Now I have a super cool tattoo on my arm instead of a hideous scar! I'll definitely be back. The shop has a warm, welcoming vibe. Even my 66-year-old mom felt comfortable there when she stopped by. The place is also neat and clean. I'd highly recommend it to literally anyone that wants a tattoo. I've had both of my tattoos done here at Emerald. In addition to myself, 4 of my cousins have all had their work done here as well. Tony is an awesome guy, with a lot of experience behind him. He has been there since the shop opened and always has a smile & a story to tell. Having not only myself, but a bunch of my family go here, I feel speaks highly of their work and costumer satisfaction. When it comes to the style and type of tattoo you want, I feel it's always important to find an artist that fits well with that style of work you want. With the guys they have here at the shop, I am more than confident you will have an excellent experience and have your piece(s) surpass your expectations. read more

Just got my 3rd tattoo from Tattoo Artist "Andy Dobler" of Emerald City and all I have to say is WOW !. Some folks are obviously specific about what they want; but each time I came in, it was with a bunch of disjointed ideas and desires regarding what I wanted. I wanted to pay homage to various life events; so like most, I started scanning Bing Images and Google Images and everything became like a hodgepodge of 'possible' images in my mind. Andy was awesome at helping me focus and on zeroing in on what would depict what I was aiming at. He's got great patience(and didn't seem to mind my many, many emails..haha!), and I'm most appreciative of his guidance - each of my 3 tattoo's turned out far better than I had imagined they would. I'm really super happy with all 3 of them. Everybody at the shop is really cool and nice. Pricing is fair, and the artists will work with you. Ten Stars hundred thumbs up 'A' fuckin' + read more

I promised my daughter that when she turned 18, I'd pay for her first tattoo. At the last minute I decided to get my first tattoo as well. We got matching Harry Potter tattoos (daughter on shoulder and me on the inside of my wrist) from Andy. He was quick and did a great job with the design. He was also very patient with my squawks and curses during the procedure, and was a lot nicer than my daughter who rolled her eyes at me. My oldest kid has told me I should get a tattoo with each of my children. I've already decided on my second one, and I will definitely return to Emerald City and Andy. And I promise not to be such a drama queen. read more

I've had a few tattoos done here, including one cover up. Ashley is my preferred artist because she makes really pretty floral and space designs. She really knows the best placement for the body. Pricing is fair and everyone in the shop is nice. They sometimes have fun holiday flash and charity specials. The only thing I don't like is being in the middle of the wide open floor in front of everybody, staff and customers walking in. It's just very awkward if you're a shy person. read more

I booked an appointment w/Ashley to get old self-harm scars covered up and she did an absolutely amazing job! This was my first tattoo and I'm really glad that I got it done here. The shop was clean and sanitary and I loved my experience there. She walked me through the entire process, and was really comforting, and the tattoo didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. I will definitely be coming back for more!! Amazing experience and great price too! read more

Ego did my first tattoo four years ago. As of today, the color is still great, the shading hasn't bled or lost pigmentation, and the placement still makes me happy. Additionally, when I came in for my obligatory touch-up he asked if he could add a couple of things to the tattoo - he wasn't happy with it. When he showed me what he meant, I saw why, and he proceeded to make those additions for no charge. I like that he's willing to offer his opinion on the work, but was chill enough that I didn't feel like I had to say yes. read more

After a 3 year hiatus since my last tattoo I decided to get a small tattoo on the way home from work. Crazy I know right? Buuuuut to be quite honest I have been prolonging several tattoos because my artist moved to California and I've been extremely picky in choosing an artist. So I decided to test my luck and chose Emerald City Tattoo to get my favorite bible verse tatted on my forearm. I walked in and talked to Danny for a few minutes about what I wanted and he ever so patiently adjusted the font size and style a few times for me before he started his masterpiece. Danny has a lot to say and is quite the conversationalist which I appreciated during the short 30 minutes it took to finish my tat. I'm very happy with how my tattoo came out and I plan on coming back for a quarter sleeve! Check it out! read more

Friendly funny and touched up my tattoos after a few weeks when I dropped in unannounced

There is no place else I would want to go and get a tattoo. Both of mine and my husbands, along with a few friends, have been done by Tony. His work is extraordinary as is his artistic ability. They aren't the most expensive place in the city ($100/hr with a $50 minimum) but the work they do is worth so much more. I highly recommend them and plan on going back for more as soon as I know what I want! read more

I've driven past this small, easy to miss shop hundreds of times. Finally the boy and I decided to check 'em out so we wandered down on a Saturday afternoon to see what was what. After walking in, I was unsure of the place, because I'm used to larger shops (Apocalypse, Laughing Buddha, etc.). But the owner Tony immediately made me feel more comfortable. As luck would have it, Tony had a cancellation that afternoon, so I was able to get a tattoo right then - which was pretty kick-ass. He did good work, didn't take too long, and charged me a reasonable rate. I'd definitely go back again if I wanted some work done within a sooner time frame than a larger shop. EDIT: Since writing the original review, I've gone back to Tony for quite a lot of work. He is the most amazing artist EVER. I will never, ever go anwhere else. read more

My wife and I decided to get tattoo's to celebrate our wedding. We went in and talked with Alex and had him sketch up some designs for us. We came back a few days later and loved what he came up with. He did a amazing job with the lettering and style on the design and tattoo. The subtle design differences between my wife and my tattoo were amazing. He gave hers a much more delicate look and feel while mine was a little thicker and stronger. The shop was very clean and feel very good about going there. Would definitely come back again. Definitely would recommend ECTS and Alex! Amazing Job! read more

This shop is as good as it gets. A little emerald gemstone right in the heart of Lake City! A+ for outstanding cleanliness/adhering to proper procedures. A+ for friendiness, you won't meet friendlier people ANYWHERE. A+ for great attitiudes, these people are truly genuine and they will treat you with RESPECT. A+ for the supplies they use (and sell) - top quality ink I have sat for 20+ hours with Tony over the last 2 years and he is exceptional. He has over 25 years experience and it shows. He's quick and precise and he lives up to his name "painless Tony". The shop has great hours, they are open from 11am - 11pm 7 days a week. read more

Dano did a small, simple tattoo for me. Two stars because he was really nice and the place was clean. But unfortunately came out uneven and blown out. Part of it also seems scarred, but it's only been 6 weeks, so hopefully that will get better. read more

I didn't get my tattoo done here but my boyfriend did. I was with him throughout most of the process and this place does great work. My b/f had work done here prior and wanted to add more to his previous tattoo. Turtle got an idea of what we wanted and drew our design. He was very patience with us as we asked for several changes to be made to his drawing. He also provided ideas as to what he thinks would look nice and what wouldn't. He is super nice! He also took his time and made sure he had the art pasted correctly and evenly on my b/f's back (which is very important).... a permanent, crooked tattoo is NOT cool. =) The tattoo looked amazing when it was finished! Exactly what he and I wanted!! Unfortunately, Turtle will be moving to New York soon (forgot when he said he would). New York will be lucky to have him. As I was waiting, I was able to see Ego's work. OMG! He is definitely an amazing artist! I totally understand why a lot of the yelpers are raving on how great Ego is. When I decide to get another one, I will for sure go to this place! Keep up the great work guys! read more

Will not go anywhere else. Out of 8 tattoos, 6 of them are from Emerald City and I love them all. The owner Tony is amazing, spends time with you so you get exactly what you want. They've had a lot of great artists in that shop and I wouldn't expect anything less then from these guys, they are all full of talent. I recommend this place to all of my friends. The only negative experience I had there was when one of the guys told me he would draw up something for my boyfriend, I paid him and he sent me over a rough draft. I told him what we liked and what we didn't. He might have taken offense to out suggestions or changes and never got back to me. But aside from that one experience this place is 5/5 stars. read more

I called in the afternoon of with some friends to get small tattoos. We got an appointment with Dan O. who could do ours back to back. It was my first tattoo so I was pretty nervous. We actually walked in to a shop earlier that day on Roosevelt in U District to get a consultation, but didn't like the vibe of the artist so we left and looked for a different place to go. I'm glad we called Emerald City! Everyone was comfortable and Dan O. had a calm vibe. He was really patient when I asked him to re-sketch a million times. I appreciated the zero rush and how understanding he was because it was my first tattoo and his style of typography was more elaborate than I wanted. So it took a while to figure out exactly what I wanted. I got a quote on my rib cage and a small tree on my wrist. Yeah, it hurt way more than I expected. He let my friends sit with me so I had a hand to hold on to and they talked me through the whole thing. The layout of the shop is interesting. When you walk in there's a gate that separates the two side counters from the rest of the floor. Instead of separated stations, they have a fold-able table they set up when people are getting tattooed. I think at maximum they could have two people getting tattoos done at the same time. Everything was clean and you could see him pulling out new equipment every time. No aftercare kit, but I had small tattoos so it didn't require much maintenance afterward. I only experienced peeling and dryness on my wrist tattoo. I imagine it was mostly because I wear gloves at work. I still put a little bag balm on it at night. Overall, great experience and we all left really happy after being there for three hours. They take cards, but charge a little extra so bring cash if possible! read more

My artist is a guy and he is extremely nice:) the equipments are sanitized and his service makes me feel less scary for my first tattoo. And the price is reasonable, compared with other places. Definitely come back next time! read more

These guys are great. The staff is non-threatening, very supportive, and will tell you if you have a stupid idea. Want custom work? Perfect! They love that. Want to get something cheesy that everyone and their dog has... well, they'll tell you you're dumb, but probably do it anyway. My favorite artist is Ego. He's been working on a back piece of mine for several years a now, and he's always been cool with me. He drew the whole thing out by hand, I think we had 3 or 4 meetings before he even put a needle to me. Very very diligent about his craft. Careful with scheduling, though, Ego's the best, but has a few other businesses he runs and is hard to pin down. I recommend him for all those interested in shade heavy, perspective heavy, or any piece involving feathers. I would give them 4.5 if I could because their 'waiting area' for friends or those without appointments blows ass (no chairs and very tight). read more

Yeah, so the only review I've written on Yelp was to promote this gym I used to work for that was the pits. Sorry for that guys. This review, however, is genuine. Ego just did my first tattoo yesterday in memorium of my father. The man spent 2.5 hours designing and needling my skin all the while giving helpful advice that ended with a product of exceptional quality. I've never wanted a tattoo, but with the sudden loss of my father I felt the need to let him paint a permanent crow on my right shoulder. Shading, details, coloring are all top-notch. And he didn't even tease me for being such a pussy about the whole deal (maybe it was that vegan dessert I brought him to lighten the mood---*hint hint*). I've been told the mark of a great tattoo is the ease of the healing process. Over 24 hours later my skin feels slightly irritated, but more comfortable than I would have imagined. I thank Ego for his dedication to my project and his unbelievable skills & talent. Ego, thank you, I hope that this review influences others to make appointments with you although I'm sure you'd rather paint some fucked up waify half-dead creatures. His prices are more than reasonable for the quality of work you will receive. read more

Jeannie did my tattoo and i am sooooo happy with it!! It is a phrase down my spine from top to bottom, in her own beautiful script. It is clear and sharp and legible from even afar. I had already been turned down by another shop, but Jeannie was up for the challenge. Another point to make is that she was very conscious of the pain of doing a tattoo all along the spine, and did everything to make me as comfortable as possible. It is a fun atmosphere and great artists, and i highly recommend it!! read more
