Had the honor of getting my first tattoo done with Heidi. She is an incredibly skilled artist, and was also so kind and calming throughout the whole time I spent in her chair. I was a little nervous getting such a large tattoo as my first piece, but it turned out exactly how I pictured it, and I couldn't be happier. On the whole, the shop is clean, bright, and welcoming. It's taken me years to write about this because, it's just been a journey coming to terms with it. And honestly, I still haven't. A few years ago, my best friend and I decided to get tattoos together. We each got the other's favorite bird skull tattooed on our forearms. I want to make one thing very very very clear. our tattoo artist, Erik Jacobsen is an incredibly skilled, talented artist. His work speaks for itself. I have ZERO negative critiques of his capabilities as a tattoo artist when it comes to executing a technically sound tattoo. My friend was EXTREMELY pleased and satisfied with her tattoo. Incredibly happy, pleased and impressed. My experience was quite different and I still grieve it. I wanted 2 things when it came to my tattoo, a smaller sized tattoo on my wrist as well as the tattoo facing towards my the direction of my shoulder as opposed to towards the direction of my finger tips. Neither of these things were granted. With the sizing of the tattoo, it was considerably larger. The back and forth I had with Erik about the direction of the tattoo went something like this: Me: I want it facing towards me Erik: That doesn't go with the flow tattooing Me: I still want it facing towards me Erik: I can't tell you the number of people who regret having a tattoo face that direction, because people are constantly trying to figure out what their tattoo is and craning around to try to make it out Me: I don't actually give a damn about what other people think or if they can make out my tattoo. In fact, no one ever asks me about my tattoos bc I have a sort of "don't fucking talk to me" energy about myself. At this point my bff interjects: Yeah, she doesn't care what other people think. Erik wouldn't let it go. And at the end of the day...I can only blame myself for moving forward with the tattoo, both being larger than I wanted plus, not facing the direction I wanted it to. It's been almost 5 years since I got this tattoo. And there isn't A SINGLE DAY where I look at my wrist and don't shake my head in utter disappointment. Not because his work wasn't done well...it ABSOLUTELY was. But because it absolutely went against the grain of everything I had dreamed and wanted it to be. And now, whenever I look at this piece on my body...I don't see a quality piece of art...I simply see my own succumbing to a bullish forcing of a tattoo artist's will-- over my own desires as the recipient of that tattoo. And at the end of the day...I just don't understand why any artist would ever fight a customer on points like that. So at the end of the day...I'm going to save up and get the tattoo faded as much as I possibly can. And then I'm going to find the best cover up artist I can afford and cover up that area and memory with something that allows me to reclaim my body, my story and my joy again. The day that happens, I'll probably sob YEARS worth of tears that I have never allowed myself to shed over this...because I have blamed myself more than I will ever blame Erik for its existence on my body. HOWEVER, I emailed them, inquiring about prices and availability. Within a couple days I received a very well thought out, detailed email with more information than I asked for. Now you might think that's bad. But it wasn't too much. It was actually perfect! They answered any and all questions I would have had had they just given me a simple answer. And I'm grateful for that. The reason I am giving the 5 stars is because they actually responded to me within the week. Great experience getting a simple tattoo with Eric. Came in as a walk-in appointment, and he was able to schedule me a couple of hours later. My tattoo literally took two seconds, but for that short amount of time, it was an easy process. He also uses saniderm to cover your tattoo which expedited the healing process in comparison to my other tattoos. The shop has a $100 tattoo minimum as an FYI. read more

Had my first tattoo done by Eric Eye at Dark Age Tattoo. What a great job! I picked the design, and we had a brief consult on positioning and size. Showed up a week later and prepped for my 2+ hour session. Eric was extremely professional, answering all my questions, and expressing an excellent "bedside manner" as he distracted me from the discomfort with fun conversation while inking my arm with beautiful art. The end result is amazing. The store itself is clean, well lit, filled with art, and very calming. Not off-putting or dingy at all. Clean friendly and positive atmosphere! I was first tatted here back in January 2015 by Heidi! Great artist. She helped retouch my ink from a previous faded piece. At first I was a little hesitant over the way she wanted to touch it up, black outlining to my pink breast cancer ribbon....but in the end the shading added definition and the line work was fantastic! I absolutely loved the outcome. Fast forward almost a year.... Yesterday December 15, returned for another tattoo this time around by artist Hanna. She's funny, nice, and has a bubbly personality. Made sure my foot didn't move too much (I feared kicking her since I'm ticklish and spasms happen) and talked me through the steps beginning to end of the tattoo process. We did a custom piece (shop is known for) quote I had be pondering for quite some time. The font selections were the hardest part of this tattoo bc of my indecisiveness. Hanna was able to help me compile a beautiful piece that flowed exactly how I wanted and the final outcome came out just like I wanted! She kept it real and authentic the entire time. I love my newest piece of ink! Thanks ladies for a great tattooing experience yet again! I'll be bCk again for more ink in sure! Side note making appointment helps, but the shop takes walking as well. Have an idea of what you want to get done so you don't waste anyone's time with the back and forth hesitation or the uncertainty of if your even getting any ink done. I came from out of town to get tattooed, and he was incredibly accommodating about making my appointment over the phone, and even rescheduling when something came up at the last minute so I couldn't make my trip. I am a Marimekko whore. I own numerous things from that Finnish design house: a wall hanging, comforter, sneakers, a plate, a pillow, a reflector, a tote bag, an umbrella...and now a lovely new Marimekko tattoo! I'd been wanting one of their designs - Bottna - as a tattoo for around six years, which is a long time to think about and wait for some new ink. I spent forever combing through the portfolios of every artist at almost every well-regarded shop in town, winnowing it down to Artcore and Dark Age. But when I dropped by Dark Age for an informal chat, just to gauge personalities and the shop space, I was very impressed. Right off the bat Jason was friendly and helpful, and I set up an actual consult with him to go over the design. He was extremely intuitive - I knew I wanted the tat to reflect the design as closely as possible, without also looking exactly like a fabric repeat - I wanted something a little more "organic," less structured, but that was about as descriptive as I could be. He took that idea and ran with it, generating a sketch that retained all of the elements of the original but in some different sizes to really fit the area of my arm. When I came back for the actual tattoo he was really great about putting me at ease. I hadn't been inked in three years, and I find the noise semi-unnerving, but he made me as comfortable as humanly possible. After some joking about Metalocalypse and how Netflix means no one ever has to go outside again, we got started. I'm not the best client; I'm kind of twitchy and the feel of the needles and vibration makes me reflexively tense up. Jason was really understanding about that and was incredibly attuned to when, exactly, I'd start pulling away, making sure to end a line or segment before that happened. And after just under two hours (a hair under his time estimate!) I had a beautiful new piece. It's perfect in every respect - and although I haven't gone through the healing process yet, I'm confident it will be crisp and bold when I come out the other side. I can't recommend Jason's work enough. Friendly + crazy technically skilled + beyond reasonable rates = a total win! Thanks for bringing my Marimekko love to my skin. read more

My family and I had a planned vacation out west with our last stop being in Seattle. My best friend and I decided we wanted a simple matching tattoo on our forearm. I called them 2 weeks prior to leaving ( we left July 4th) and I called 5 times, the fifth time them finally answering. They prompted me to message the tattoo artists individually through Instagram. I went to the pages and most of them wanted an email. I sent multiple emails and got a response from 2. One of them told me they were booked. They other had a cancellation, but at a time that did not work for me. I continued to try to reach out to artists through Instagram Direct Message and email. I never got any other response. Today was the day I was in Seattle and we went to the shop. The girl that greeted us, Cassidy, was SUPER friendly. I told her what I have stated above. She told me she had a few cancellations and could see if she could squeeze me in. She texted me about an hour later to tell me she could not get me in. Long story short, we attempted to go to other places but all needed appointments. I tried from the get to schedule an appointment with this place because I had done research and this place had the best reviews. I did read great reviews about how awesome their tattoos were. I just, unfortunately, couldn't get one due to lack of communication (the main problem being communication). Plan WAY ahead of time if you would like to go to this place. read more

Their shop minimum is $80 - standard in the Seattle area for any shop worth while. Both myself and my s.o. have had work done by Hanna Sandstrom (@kaptenhanna on Instagram). Cool chick and an amazing artist. But I would feel comfortable recommending any of the fine folks here. Very reasonable pricing for the quality of the work, in my opinion.
