Do Not Use Marc! I went weeks before, priced the tattoo I wanted and paid a $100 deposit in cash because he said he could give me a deal if I paid in cash. The day of the tattoo, he screwed around for 45 minutes and when he went to place the tattoo, I told him that it was supposed to be bigger and he now tells me he can't do it bigger. I say fine, I've already waited for him to draw it out and have two smoke breaks. He then proceeds to complain during the entire tattoo about how he was doing such great work for so little price. For three hours he complained that I was basically short changing him on a price he agreed to beforehand. At the end off the three hours he informs me that my time was up even though he had not applied shading or details to make it look anything other than what a 6th grader could do. I'm pretty upset by this point. When I get to the register he tells the girl that I owe full price. When I remind him that I gave him the deposit, (she said he had not put it in the computer) he just said charge her the full price and walked off. Did not feel like getting stabbed so I just threw the money on the counter and left. What a thieving, unprofessional jerk. so beware. read more

Ben did a great job on my tattoo. I sat down with him a few months ago an explained what I wanted and with a few questions he was working on the concept drawing. When we had the final meeting before the actual appointment, I had no changes to the idea that he had helped me create. I couldn't have asked for a better result! The artist was very honest with me about the lack of feasibility of my request. --I was hoping to cover one tattoo (22 years old) with a new one. The artist sat down with me, looked at my tattoo, listened to my hopes, suggested a couple alternatives, and ultimately, advised me that covering my tattoo with another (in my specific case) was probably not a good idea. I am in the process of a sleeve, new to the area and ended up picking 522 tattoo, and Thomas is doing my current tattoo, and he is AMAZING!!! I have several tattoos and his isn't even done and it's already the best one I have! I'll update with more photos when it's finished.But it's truly amazing! My request wasn't the easiest and my arms are skinny so the area he had to work with wasn't very big and my tattoo (a grizzly bear and vintage microphone) is needing a lot of details and his design and placement are perfect. Ben Wallenborn did a very poor job on my memorial tattoo. I provided a basic drawing and asked him to design something more out of it, but when I arrived for the appt he had simply traced my drawing. He overworked/cut me in several places, and despite me taking excellent care of the tat, it became infected. When I showed him the tattoo by email he denied that it was infected. The doctor prescribed an antibiotic and its now healing up well. He then cancelled our next appointment to finish putting in the color and refused to refund the deposit on file... he's refusing to provide the service and refusing to refund the money, so he's stealing from me after traumatizing my Dad's memorial tattoo. There are many holidays (no ink) in the areas that he cut up. The outline is very inconsistent, the circles are wonky, and there are many blowouts through out...It's a cool design despite his poor performance, and he did nice work on the color shading that he put in. I've had several other tattoo artists apprise the work before deciding to write a bad review and all agreed that I ought to be refunded for the tattoo and that it looks like an apprentice did the line work. Ben should be ashamed of himself for stealing from me especially after messing up my memorial tattoo... I had to attend the memorial with an infected forearm. read more

I love this place. I've seen Thomas twice now for tattoos, and each time he made sure they were exactly what I wanted. The first one was a family tattoo, and his attention to detail was phenomenal. I just got my second tattoo from Thomas last night. He answered my questions about placement, even moved the stencil around to ensure it looked as great as it could. I was fortunate enough to have Ben do my first 3 pieces over ten years ago but lost touch with him after moving out of state. I was in town visiting my daughter who is a freshman at Seattle Pacific University and half joked with her that we should get matching tattoos while I am here. She was all for it and after stopping in Ben's old stomping ground we found out that he has opened his own shop. SCORE! I have been putting off my next tattoo because I really wanted him to do all of mine. So I called the shop right away and spoke to Amber. She is awesome! After explaining what we wanted she was able to get us in the very next day - DOUBLE SCORE! I emailed her a pic of what we wanted and we made our deposit over the phone. Ben was fantastic as usual. Very laid back, warm and personable and great to talk with. There's no sitting there awkwardly in silence, it's as if your buddy is doing your tattoo for you at his ridiculously awesome shop. The shop is not your ordinary stainless steel, cold looking shop covered from floor to ceiling in flash art. This place looks like a really cool art gallery with some epic freakin pieces displayed, most done by the shops insanely talented artists. Amber offered everyone in our party beverages and they have a cool bar style counter that runs the length of the shop floor on the outer edge with bar stools so you can sit and watch the masters at work. My daughter and I are now the proud owners of two badass "The Office" themed pieces of art. I can not wait to go back and see Ben on a regular basis now that I know where his new home is. Roni has done several tattoos for me and has done most of the work my daughter-in-law has and is an excellent artist. When I started thinking about a portrait of my dog I knew that 522 would be the place for me. Based on portfolio work I decided that Marc would be perfect to create my vision of my beloved Murphy. That was also a challenging tattoo because I wanted it to be a coverup as well. Marc took on the challenge and created an imagine of my dog that capture him as I remember. When my husband saw my tattoo he said "its Murphy to a T". My dog passed away in June 2014 and I am so glad to have him with me daily in the only way possible! Came in after being told by a friend that this was the place to go. I set up an appointment with Erika to talk about getting a leg piece done in memory of my father who passed away last year. She was extremely helpful in helping me to decide the best placement and how to make the ideas in my head become a real piece of art. I have quite a few tattoos and she has one of the lightest touches for an artist, that is a great relief when you're having a piece done that takes a few hours. I came here first in 2014/2015 to see Erika she made a half finished tattoo I had done at hidden hand so much better! She made it gorgeous ! I learned that not all tattoo artists can do everything but she is amazing ! I was so sad about my sunflower and she made me want to show it off all the time and I get non stop compliments now I came back two months ago to get matching tattoo with my mother and learned Erika had left ... I got my first tattoo when i was 16 and I have over 100 hours of work. these days i sit for around 4-6 hours almost every month for the past 3 years or so which is only to say that i have some time working with tattoo artists at different shops in Seattle. Seattle is blessed to have a smattering of truly world class tattoo artists but finding a shop like 522 is a special experience. First of the staff is friendly. There's no elitist vibes that I've become acutely aware of at other shops I get work from having gone from someone with no visible work to having tattoo from knuckles to neck. The people here are genuine folk who are there to help you out to get the tattoo you want. From my experience it seems that many shops that have some incredible talent are a bit larger or at least staff more artists than 522. Consequently it seems that the most talented artists at these places are booked out for 6 months or more and those that have time to book, may not have your favorite portfolio. Portfolios speak for themselves but you REALLY can't go wrong with anyone in that place and booking times remain reasonable compared to the demand and exceptional compared to other shops in the area. It's such a severely talented and concentrated group of world class artists in there that you can't go wrong with anyone. They are all expert in their craft and professional in their approach. 522 has a unique group that are skilled at melding your ideas, the medium of tattoo and their personal style to arrive with a concept that is going to not only look outstanding, but heal well and have lasting, vibrant color and clean sharp lines. The location is comfortable and open. They actually have climate control; something you think would be a priority to a business that offers services to people who are intrinsically in pain but i've spent many a chilly session with my shirt off and a handful of hot sweaty sessions at other "top" shops in Seattle both of which make an already somewhat uncomfortable experience about 100 times worse. They provide parking, hot beverages and a clean, sterile but inviting environment to work in. All things that show this artist owned shop takes the time to consider what the customer wants and provide it; not just book clients to stick ink into. Regardless of if you are brand new or newer to getting tattoo'd or feverishly searching for space left to cram more art on you'll find what you are looking for at 522 Tattoo. read more
