The service is excellent here. Friendly and unobtrusive. The server came by to top up our water glasses throughout our meal and checked in on us often. The lunch menu changed a little as the curries which I saw in May were replaced by fish and chips. Prices also went up from $15 to $16. We decided on the Father's Day special menu. We had the nyama choma with lamb. The lamb was very tender and did not have a strong gamey taste. It was served with Briyani rice, cassava fries (chopped into cubes) and kachumber cucumber salad. The samaki choma was also very good. The grilled tilapia fillet was fresh and it came was Briyani rice, coconut scalloped potatoes (so good!) and kachumber cucumber salad. You could choose your spice level. We chose mild and it was not spicy which suited us well. We also got the fried okra appetizers. It was really nice, especially when drizzled with the sauce. We finished with the mango lassi. The portions were not huge but they were still filling. You won't need to roll out of the restaurant. It was a sunny summer day and the patio was a good option. There were huge umbrellas to keep the sun from bearing down on us directly.

Hello 911!? Yes I'd like to report a fire in my mouth!!! One cannot dispute the Ismaili influence on producing excellent flavorful dishes! Ember Indian Kitchen is an awesome addition to the Steveston area of Richmond. The owners have brought their birth roots out of East Africa to Richmond via tasty spices - & it's a hit!!! Keep in mind that EIK is further east of the popular Steveston Village, so it makes for a heathy walk over or a short drive to get here. What became a spontaneous visit turned into a pleasant hit! The Biryani Prawns dish was fire in my mouth - those tiny chillies mixed into the rice were like hotter than a super model! Glad my dinner date reminded me to add the Yogurt sitting on the side - to this dish! It was a life saver! It cooled down the roasting heat in my mouth right away! Now you hard core Ghost Pepper fans please don't come here & after trying out the food, then start calling me a wuss! The Vindaloo Lamb had me singing & growling in delight!!! You know me - I utterly embarrassed myself & didn't care! My mouth party rocked with the awesome flavourful sauce in this dish!!! Hot tip news flash - scoop up the sauce from the Vindaloo & apply it onto the Garlic Naan - yaaassssss mama! EIK has a beautiful décor & setting along with a high ceiling. The patio is spacious & I will return on those warm & hot summer nights to try it out. I have been coming to EIK for awhile now over the past few months but it was always take-out (covid-19 restrictions) - however, this time decided on dinning in as it was a quiet evening with only 3 other couples seated. I really enjoyed the vibe & music. Great view of the Fraser River & easy access to the path that runs beside it. Excellent & comfortable for date nights, families & groups! EIK see you soon!!!

    Kebabs, beef samosas, chicken pakora.

When this first opened, we liked it but didn't feel it was special. Over the past few years. I have come to appreciate it more and more. It is a really beautiful place and has an incredible view/patio. The ambiance is great. We love the appetizer kebabs (delicious), and it has my favourite raita. The chicken pakora is a bit different than most places, with more flavour in my opinion. We're fans. Today we tried malai kofta, and it may have now become my favourite Indian dish. The naan is excellent. The beef samosas are ok, but not my favourite - the only reason it doesn't have five stars. I do like them, though, and always get them. Overall, I would give Ember 4.5 stars if I could.

I'm always looking for good Indian restaurants and Ember does not disappoint! The restaurant is located on the edge of Richmond and Steveston with plenty of street parking close by. The space itself is bright, spacious, with plenty of seating for small and large parties. They also have a beautiful patio which I could imagine would be lovely during the summer. Their menu is a fusion of Indian-African, because the owner grew up in Africa and wanted to blend his two cultures together. I came in with a friend and we split a few different dishes: sweet chili mango pili pili chicken wings, cassava fries, butter chicken, and prawn biryani. I loved the flavour of the pili pili wings, but found it to be a bit dry. If it had just a tad bit more sauce on them, they would have been perfect. My favourite had to be the butter chicken. I loved the naan bread that came with it - the perfect blend of soft and chewy that paired perfectly with the butter chicken. I was in heaven. I'm looking forward to coming back here and enjoying their food and drinks on the patio soon.

Kuku Paka: African style curry made with fragrant herbs & tomatoes

This is a hidden gem in Steveston! Escape the touristy area and experience the calmer side of the water Ember Indian Kitchen serves a fusion of East African flavours with Indian Food. The owner, Mr. Sunderji, introduced items we have never heard of before since my parents have eaten here twice already (my first time). For small plates, we ordered the Spinach Bhajia (must try!) and Mogo (Cassava) Fries. I was told the Spinach Bhajia consist of 12 layers of pressed spinach which is rolled and stuffed into a can for pressure cooking. After, it is sliced and rolled in chickpea flour and deep fried. It comes with a ginger, buttermilk and garlic sauce which adds a cooling effect to the spinach disk. The Mogo Fries was starchy because Cassava is a high starch root vegetable but it kept its crunchiness! I liked the tangy sauce that comes with the fries because it helps cut the rich starch For entrees, we skipped the butter chicken to try the Kuku Paka. I believe it is an upgraded and more refined chicken curry because the coconut cream sauce had a beautiful coconut flavour. As if it was fresh coconut water, and not the preserved canned stuff. The chicken was tender and large in pieces. I was stuffed! Also, we had the Beef Roganjosh, a short rib cooked with onions, tomatoes & a specialty blend of aromatic herbs. The cubed beef kept its shape well and they were tender. All the aromatic vegetables and herbs worked so well together. I could eat this over pasta, rice and naan! A great compliment to the Garlic Naan and substitute to the typical curry We also had an item from the Tandoor & Grill section: Lamb Chops- Hadi Chaamp. The lamb was very tender and the charred marks are not bitter at all. Everything just came together and showcased the lamb, itself. I believed the entrees came with Naan and we chose the garlic flavour. I felt the ones that came with the dishes were not very garlic-y but were chewy, thin and delicious. The second order of garlic naan was WAY better because it had a great char at the bottom and was still tender, chewy but most importantly, it was a generous helping of garlic and herb butter spread on top. Overall, I highly recommend everyone to visit Ember and meet Mr. Sunderji because you get to learn more about different types of cuisine like the African influence and the dining room is perfect for gatherings and parties!

finally tried this new indian place in the fishing village. let me set the record straight, this is not a fine dining indian cuisine place, rather, it is a fusion of cuisines, namely african and indian. the owner was born in south africa but is of indian decent. so in the menu, you will find non-traditional indian dishes.. anyhow, being a sucker for happy hour, i just had to give this place a try... tried the chicken samosas, beef kabob, veggie pakoras, chicken wings ( not indian style, but bar food style) , and of course, had to try the butter chicken with naan bread and the chai tea! The Verdicts..... chicken samosas did not taste authentic. for starters, the appearance was not 3D like the traditional kind. spices were lacking and weak. it was like a chinese spring roll but shaped like a triangle. the beef kebobs were possibly the worst dish of the night. dont know why they are called kebobs, should've been beef balls, as they are shaped as such and were not on a skewer. inside, very dry and rough. turns out, this was an african influenced dish. veggie pakoras were good. close enough tnthe traditional kind. came with a sweet chutney sauce. good touch. wings were wings. if you cant do these right, you have no business opening a restaurant. the butter chicken was good. not wow, just good. at least the sauce was thick and rich and not watery. the robust smell of the rich cream and spices was there. the chicken pieces were moist . the naan bread fresh and stringy when pulled. the chicken was not grilled first, so lacking the bbq flavour in the sauce. after having butter chicken from tasty and ginger, and authentic ones from banquet halls, i'd rate this one a 6 out of 10. another fav of mine that the masala chai tea was a failure. cant even smell the spices from my cup. it just tasted like milk & tea . my guess is, it came from a tea bag and not fresh tea leaves and spices being pounded on a mortar and pestle. abysmal in my opinion! most common theme here is small quantity but pricey price tag. i agree! the naan bread that came with the butter chicken was 1 while cut up into 3 pieces..lol. the butter chicken had a few pieces in it. the samosas 2D instead of 3D and small in size. dont think i will be back here. it was around dinner time, and place was empty. a good indication of a good indian place is the presence of south asian people. didnt see them here. just the masses. cheers! happy eating!

We're new to the hood and it's walking distance with a pretty nice view. Consider the recent no indoor dine-in restriction, this place is pretty busy on a weekday lunch hour. For $50 (tax and tips included), this is what we got. Yes, each entree was $20. They taste wayyyy better than Ginger (though we are no expert in knowing which is more authentic)! Definitely wish they have a lunch menu. $20 lunch at this portion make it hard for us to visit and support as often as we wish.

You know I seem to be writing a lot of 4 star reviews. It's mostly because the reviews I write, I tend to know a bit about the place before hand. Usually by recommendations, and or just know that it would be a place I would like. Ember Indian Kitchen is one of them. It opened up in 2017 and I found out about it before it opened from my occasional drives along the old Dyke road. "Hey!" I say to self. "There is a new Indian restaurant opening!!" Sadly months went past and I ended up reading reviews of this place before I got to try it out. I wanted to be FTR (first to review) this place but things just didn't work my way. While I passed this place and reviewed other places, I just pushed Ember Indian Kitchen aside like I knew the time wasn't quite right for me to come and eat there. Well, it's been a few weeks since coming here and now I get to write my review of this place. Firstly. Okra fries. FABULOUS! Not everyone loves Okra, but I do. I have wet dreams about that veggie. The deep fried crispy hardness on the outside and the gelatinous slimy film that coats the seeds inside. When you have tried it you might think the same way I do about this veggie that was made so famous in Gumbo and Asian cuisines. It truly is an erotic food item that I would consider an appreciated taste. The Okra fries level the playing field for those who might not like Okra, but will like how the chefs at Ember Indian Kitchen does it. Unfortunately because of that dish, everything else kinda was just eaten with a lot of "mmmmmm" and "gooood" and "yeah, I like this too". Very delicious but not quite my first impression of "OMG I'm going to.............. ....Tweet about this!" YELP!! Another good sign this is an excellent place to get good Indian and African style food is that there are lots of local people dining here. We bumped into friends who dine here and they are trendy girls. Yes, this is a chick friendly, :"Instagrammy", #girlsnightout place. Ember takes the Traditional Indian dishes and takes it to a modern high. The bonus is it's location. It has a great view of the river and it's peaceful and on a summers night, you can have a romantic stroll after dinner. You want to dress nice for this. Note: it does get a bit loud when it's busy. There is a huge echo present where all the conversations mix with he music and the kitchen noises. The ambiant presence is similar to those modern restaurants you would find downtown. Full of buzz and vibrancy. If you happen to come at a time when it's a bit quieter, the experience can be quite different. All in all, make sure you bring a friend or friends that would love food the way you like and that commonality will just make this experience that much more better. How often do you you get to dress up for Indian food outside of VJ's orbit? Sorry for the typo's. If there are any, and there are I am sure. Then typo's written free of charge and tax not included.

This place is outstanding for their amazing delicious Indian cuisine. Plus I believe they are one of the only places in Richmond that have halal meat! (If I'm wrong it's because I haven't been to the other places). * Beef samosa ($8) - the samosa is filled with juicy well seasoned meat. The outer layer is crunchy and thin allowing the meat flavour to really stand out! * Veggie pakora ($8) the pakora was again nicely seasoned and paired well with their sauce. The size was the perfect bite size pieces, and not to mention the spices they use really lift up your pallet and explode with flavours. * Aloo gobi ($17) the cauliflower was cooked perfectly, perfect to pair with rice, I love every bit of seasoning on it. Must have! * Butter chicken sub garlic naan ($18+$1.50) the butter chicken is one of the best in Richmond, super creamy, and delicious with the garlic buttered naan is outstanding duo. * Garlic naan ($4) I love garlic naan and their naan is amazing. * Okra fries ($8) love how crisp they are and soft and chewy in the middle. The sauce pair is yummy. * Chicken pakora ($12) do not get this, it's soggy and not crispy chicken tenders not worth the price. * 8/10 - love the place but the chicken pakora was such a let down. Not impressed by this item. * 5.5/10 - it's not cheap here but it's has amazing taste. Total bill before tip: $80.33

There was a birthday party going on against one of the walls which was fine. As soon as we entered the door we weee promptly seated. We had reservations, however they were not needed. It was a typical restaurant seating with booths. It was clean but looked a bit tired. The ceiling was black with blue twinkly lights in it. Ok. Drinks were served on time and we ordered a bottle of wine. Came quickly and with an ice bucket. Nice touch as it kept the wine cold. The food was ok. It was not the best Indian food for flavor and taste. I've had better. We ordered garlic and paneer nan. Lots of oil on the garlic Nan but came hot and soft. Ordered double rice. It came in a single bowl. It was enough for four of us. We split the dishes ordering vindaloo lamb, mixed vegetable, a starter was paneer pakora- it was not what we expected so we were disappointed. The chili chicken was quite good. The lamb was over cooked and when it is it is stringy. I've had lamb that melts in your mouth. In all the food did not impress us at all.

We ordered 2 Butter Chicken, 1 Chicken Curry, 1 Palak Paneer, 1 Dal Makhani, 1 Chana Masala, rice, and garlic and plain naan. The dishes were great sizes and really affordable but lacked flavor (even salt). The Dal was overcooked and mush, and the palak was very mild. The regular naan was thick and fluffy but the garlic was flat. Apparently the butter chicken was very good but the sauce to chicken ratio was off. So much sauce, not a lot of chicken. There was no cilantro (even though it's included in the pictures) which would have added to the flavor. I don't think its worth the raves it's getting.
