Best food I've had in many years. Visiting my brother and he suggested this restaurant. My GAWD I can't get enough of it. Literally mouth watering food. I'm also very saddened by humanity. There were two ppl with a takeout order who was extremely rude to the gentleman in the front. They were talking down to him and even threatened to tell their whole fam to write negative reviews all because they ordered for takeout and wanted to dine in but the restaurant was full. Great place. When we came it was during Ramadan and they only had the iftar buffet. The main dishes were the Afghan raisin rice , a pea vegetarian dish, lamb, and what looked like Tandoori chicken. All of the food was really good. The chicken in particular was very tender and flavourful. The lamb was great too - I love lamb on bones. They also have dessert which was a pistachio flavoured rice cream pudding, also really good. Look forward to come back to try this place when normal menu is available. read more

Beautiful Afghan restaurant facing the outside of Richmond Parking Market (towards Westminster). And I mean beautiful in more than one way. Parking is available in the RPM parkade attached to the main building. The inside is somewhat plain, but has lots of Afghan (Middle Eastern) decorations. Their display can almost serve as a museum exhibit. Staff were very friendly and helpful. My friends (4 adults, 1 kid) had the Family Combo. This thing comes with 3 vegetarian side dishes (decently large bowls), a stack of naan, a pile of rice (with secret hidden lamb chunks), and a meat platter consisting of skewers and other animal goodies. They do not skimp out on the portion size here. We just sat and stared in awe at the big beautiful steaming piles of food in front of us. As mentioned before, the large rice platter actually has chunks of lamb buried in the middle. Most other places would use other filler such as vegetables. Not here. I was ready to weep. Special mention. We also tried the bolani (stuff flat bread). This is like a flat version of a samosa. Super tasty. Also worth getting. Final bill was comparable to a pho dinner(!) for each person. Talk about crazy good value. My only recommendation is to come in a large group. They have other larger platters which can cover up to 11 people. Getting hungry just thinking about this review. Afghan Chopan is unexpectedly located at the Richmond public market but still popular amoung the neighbourhood. We tried the Mantu, chicken combo and Shami combo. Everything is reasonably priced and the combos came in big portions. The mantus were so flavourful and saucy. Out of the two combos I thought the chicken was slightly better. The chicken was soft and well seasoned. The rice with masala seasoning was delicious and I liked the addition of raisins and carrots on top of my rice. It also came with chutney/yogurt with veggies. Having lived in Afghanistan for ..... uh - not! Thought I'd try this joint to see what they offered & probably because I'll never visit Afghanistan. I was looking for & craving middle eastern food - which usually meant Shawarma chicken wraps & the like. This place is small - as in tiny! Definitely order to go due to very limited seating. However, the food quality & price made me go - WOW! We picked up our order of chicken & rice for our group of 6 & everyone loved it! There wasn't much left as we all chowed down at Kits Beach waiting for the fireworks. By the way it was an amazing display put on by the USA whom I believe recruited the Disneyland crew for production. The meal came with Naan bread but I really just prefer my chicken with rice. I tasted the bread though however & it was good. There's something about the taste of halal meat - it just tastes so good! I will have to go back sometime as I'm curious to know about the 'bakery' part of this place! AC does get my seal of approval - Get Here Now! read more

It's so good. I regret to say that it took me so long to come here. I had been to the original location years ago. Stepping in here I was happy to see how far they have come. They even have the traditional elevated eating areas with low tables and rugs. TV was showing the latest Raptors game. The food was really good. Salad was fresh. Dressing was minty and spicy. The beef and chicken kebabs were tender and flavorful. Just ideal. It looks like they are struggling a bit with the covid crisis, but takeout customers were coming in regularly. There's free parking upstairs in Richmond Public Market. Just be careful while driving in there. read more

Orderd a ground beef lunch special box. Server never told me it was one piece of skewer instead of 2. Not even the menu states you get one piece of skewer. I rather get it at daddy's grill on 5 and Cambie where the portion of the meat is double and size is way way bigger. Salad is sad as well. Very bland and rice is bland. Would not recommend it. I've been here probably almost 10 times! This place is an absolute gem. Located across from Richmond centre, it's a little store that most people might miss. I actually never noticed it until I saw it on Yelp! Onto the food - their food is fantastic! Fresh, flavourful, aromatic. Once you enter the store you smell something delicious. My favourite is probably the roast chicken. It is amazing. Tender, soft, and well seasoned with crispy skin, with moist afghan style rice, a flavourful cooked vegetable dish (it varies) and a crunchy salad on the side. There is just such a unique flavour that can't be recreated. Some items I would recommend would be the roast chicken, bolani (crispy fried pastry with potatoes and leeks !), and the shami kebab. I have yet to try the mantu but I am looking forward to it. They also have amazing deals for students - only $5 for a healthy meal!!!! I always come here and buy the student discount meals. The only downside is that the place is pretty small and there is limited seating. It can also get a bit hot or stuffy if you choose to dine in (during the summer) since there is no AC. Sometimes their portions can vary with how busy they are on that day. When they are busy I tend to get less food and when the store is almost empty I tend to get more. So choose the right time to go there! read more

Afghan Chopan brings a whole new level of awesomeness to Afghan cuisine. Not only are the various kebabs extremely delicious and juicy (you can get a good kebab combo with all 3 skewers that comes with naan) but I was really impressed with their vegetarian combo. This dish comes with 3 veggie dishes: their egg plant stew, dumplings (ashak) and this crispy pastry thing stuffed with potatoes (bolani). The flavours were just so good with a nice level of spiciness. Also, I was super impressed with the egg plant stew. Get in there with that naan and you ate golden! Just a note, the naan here is more like a thicker bread compared to the stuff you might get at an Indian restaurant(for those that are wondering). Also, as others have mentioned, take out is recommended. Overall, Afghan Chopan is a must visit, must eat, kind of place. I'm glad it is in Richmond so that I can pig out! read more

Being Afghani, I am pretty picky on finding an authentic afghani restaurant. And this place is absolutely delicious. I've tried the chicken and the lamb, and every time, the meat is cooked and seasoned perfectly. The mantu is also a great appetizer. The aushak has more of an Italian flavor with the sauce they put on it for some reason. But overall, I highly recommend their food. This location is small, is good for takeout. Their new location down the street has restaurant seating if you're looking for a that. read more

My wife and myself always drove all the way to surrey to eat their amazing dishes until they finally opened up a location in Richmond, I remember when me and my wife found out were ecstatic. My bf and I were looking for a place to have dinner, and I came across a flyer in our hotel, that there was Afgan food near by, so we decided to go. As we walked in, I wasn't too sure if this was the right place, just because it is a very small restaurant, I kid you not, this place only sits 4 people in their restaurant. Not too sure what I had ordered, but damn, the food was delicious! I had the kabob, and my boyfriend had ordered the chicken, OMG ... the food was amazeballs!!! It did take a while for us to get our order, but it was worth it. We were in town for my birthday weekend, and I was pretty bummed that we didn't get the chance to grab something to eat here. This unique restaurant is perfect in every way - service, food and ambiance. Since my family from out of town were visiting, we brought them to this little gem to experience the tasty Afghan cuisine that is not as easily accessible back home. We had booked the special carpeted area where we could enjoy our food while sitting on the cushions - traditional style. After consulting our lovely waitress, our group of 5 adults enjoyed the Family Combo (which is ideally for 4-5 people) but we ended up having leftovers since the portions were so generous! From the juicy chicken and beef pieces to the perfectly seasoned yogurt dressing, we savored every bit. Will be back the next time we have guests!! read more

Since I moved to Richmond I dined four times here so far and all experiences have been amazingggggg!!! Since my traditional food (Uzbek) is similar to Afghan, I know how real kebab and real naan taste like and theirs is best so far! In spite of the underwhelming context, it's pretty good food and quite frankly in Richmond your ethnic food options outside of assorted Asian aren't all that great. The meat was cooked and seasoned well but this is take out quality. Don't expect to wow anyone with take out from this establishment. I'd recommend sticking to the meat. It's what they do well.
